I went to a small local knife shop today to try and find some Chromium Oxide for my paddle strop. Not only did they not have that, or any strops, or any decent razor hones, they didn't have any Dovo straights. They did have some Fromm strop dressing, which was nice. The thing that caught my eye was sitting next to the Merkurs were plastic scaled straights made by Co. Conk. They were marked Solingen, Germany and were priced higher than lower end Dovos. Does anything know about these blades? They also had a Co. Conk hone for $20, is it any good?

I'm pretty certain the Col Conk straights ARE Dovos.

I could be wrong though.

I have seen some decent deals online for Col Conk straights. They can be found pretty cheap. Just gotta keep your eye out.

How cheap? These were over $170 and had cheap plastic scales.

So I found Col Conk's website where the same razors were labeled as Dovo's. Now I'm wondering why the knife store wouldn't use Dovo's reputation over Col. Conk's and label them as "made by Dovo" or something.

Depends on what you are looking for. There are several different levels on Col Conk straights just as with Dovo and others. There are some being sold as sets with Col Conk straight, Col Conk strop, and Col Conk hone for around 55.00

My first two str8s were both Col Conk and they are definetly not cheap and they are DOVO's. Even though mine said that they were shave ready, they were not. If I could start over again I would buy vintage str8s here on B/S/T or at SRP that were shave ready. Alot cheaper and a heck of alot better IMO. YMMV as always...

Col Conk does not manufacture anything. They are actually located in a little town about 25 miles from me but they have no facility open to the public. I gather they bought the name and just sell products made for them working from their house.

In general you can do better buying the product from the manufacturer like Dovo for razors.

Where does the soap come from then?

Its made for them by someone else. Who? That's a good question and an answer you will probably never be able to get answered.

Van Der Hagen Enterprises. I knew it was them several days ago, but another post in the past day or two has reminded me I'm not crazy. It's VDH enterprises. Note I'm not saying the col conk IS VDH just it is produced by VDH.

Isn't rebranding a wonderful thing?

I'd be very interested in more info on these sets & had no luck through my favorite search engine finding anything close to this price. Would you be kind enough to point me in the right direction? Either by post here or PM?

thx much
