Hi Everyone,

I love bay rum as an after shave and have been using Clubman bay rum which has cinnamon among other ingredients but I am willing to try other brands so I need your opinions.
Thanks

Hello,

My favorite Bay Rum Aftershaves are Dominica Bay Rum and Ogallala Bay Rum. Either of these will make you happy. If you are suseptiple to razor bumps I would recommend the Ogalla, it has witch hazel in it which really helps smooth things out. Here are a couple of links:

I agree with the Ogalla. Its even available in multiple variations....and isn't terribly pricey!

just got in on the 2 for 1 plus 20% off deal at bath and bodyworks for the c.o. bigalow bay rum cologne.

Very nice stuff . . . more subtle than the pinaud classic bay rum aftershave.

I love both.

By the way, the Ogalla didn't work for me. on me it smelled like I was smoking a clove cigarette sitting in front of a massive, smokey bonfire. wasn't the scent I was going for. of course, mileage varies.

I myself am a dyed in the wool Clubman VI Bay Rum guy but this looks pretty good actually. I may just have to give this a go. Thanks for enabling me.

I too would suggest the CO Bigelow Bay Rum. It's got a pretty traditional smell, the balm works well, and it won't overpower your EDT like Pinaud.

there's the dominica bay rum (http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/6910180/373980.htm). there's a lime version (http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/6910180/6884352.htm) as well. i think they both smell great. plus it comes in a neat glass bottle with a cork stopper.

Mine doesn't have the cork stopper unfortunately. This is my favorite bay rum scent and the wide mouth on the bottle is the only thing I don't like about it. (Their Bay Rum Lime is on my wish list!)

Don't forget about the Royall Bay Rhum version, which is a bit heavy on the cloves (which may be a good or bad thing, depending on how much gas it takes you to drive from Chigago to Detroit.)

Love both Dominica ones (regular and lime), but neither last very long at all (less than two hours for the regular, and even less for the lime...like, by the time it dries it's gone...).

Another vote for the Dominica in both varieties. I believe the cork was the old style. Now it is a regular screw top, but it is easy enough to control the flow with your index finger over the top of the bottle.

Enjoy!

I don't think they make it with the cork stopper anymore. It is now a twist cap.

Also, a fave bay rum of mine is St. John's Bay Rum.

Ogallala gets my vote. I like bay rum, limes, and Peppercorns while my wife likes bay rum and sandalwood best.

I like all of them that have been mentioned. And I really like Superior 70 Alcoholado, which I think smells the best of any bay rum and costs about $4 for 750 ml in the ethnic section of many drug or grocery stores. If it were lower alcohol it would be my favorite BR period.

I put a speed pourer made for liquor bottles in the larger mouth bay rum bottles, which include Dominica, Ogallala, and Superior 70. Really helps and looks cool on the shave den shelf.

And Ogallala really does come in many flavors. The AS is low scent, which I have decided I like best for all BRs. That way you can used it generously, and still use whatever edt you want to without clashing. I love the smell of BR, but have decided that there is just no way that true BR aroma ever lasts. It seems to me that to get a lasting fragrance, makers bring up the clove and cinnamon in the scent. While that is absolutely proper in a BR--most of them have it--it is not what I want to be the only remaining scent on dry down.

Ogallala's bath soaps and air fresheners are great, too. Again I do love that bay rum smell, and nothing like showering up in their regular BR scent bath soap and shampoo (great shampoo) to be enevelop in it, although, again, it is not lasting!

Now of this is to say that Pinaud's BR is not great. it truly is!

It's best to just get them all!!!!

I have the Ogallala, Burt's Bee's Bay Rum (excellent by the way) and Pinauds. I love them all but find myself reaching for the Pinaud more and more. It's addictive stuff.

This thread has inspired me to order the Dominica. I have been putting it off for a while. Sounds like great stuff.

Another one I keep hearing about is Superior 70 Bay Rum. I hear it's fantastic but I have not seen it anywhere. I hear it is popular in Hispanic stores in the Fla. area. I want to check that one out too...

cheers,

Marty E.

I have Co Bigelow AS and EDT also I have Ogallala EDC and the AS.

None of these last long which is sometimes good and sometimes bad.

As far as scent I like the Bigelow better. The Ogallala has too much spice or clove or something that I don't like as much.

The Bigelow smells to me like it is bay rum with some other scents (maybe vetiver) that gives it almost more of a modern bay rum scent imho.

I don't have St Johns but that is a very good one.

I have been getting mine at:

Shoppers Food & Pharmacy
6360 Seven Corners Center
Falls Church, VA

This place has also had other wonderful things such as Florida Water, Royal Violets, Maja soap, agua de rosas, but they seem to have run out of most interesting stuff other than the Superior 70, which is actually maybe $4.29 for 750 ml. Walgreens lists it on line, and I have read that one can order anything on-line for delivery to a local Walgreen's with no shipping charge, but have not looked into that myself. I really want to track down some local Cuban store or the like.

There is a menthol version of the Superior 70 I have never seen in person, I would like to check out, too.

<Another one I keep hearing about is Superior 70 Bay Rum. >

Probably from me, at least on this forum! If you find some, report back what you think. I wonder whether the scent it closer to pure bay leaves (not kitchen bay leaves but whatever that Carribean tree is) than many of the others that have clove and cinnamon, or whether I am fooling myself and this one has different stuff, like citrus or something.

Ogallala.

Seriously, 2 ounces for 1 cent...

I think it's foolish NOT to try it out.

EDIT: Oh, and it's an excellent product!

I really, REALLY love the Captain Smith's spiced bay rum. Long lasting scent, excellent skin conditioning, and relatively cheap. The Clubman is pretty decent in my book, but I've yet to try either Ogalla or Royall, so I've still got some shopping to do.

I've tried Masters and Clubman, both of which I liked. My current bottle is Lucky Tiger Bay Rum. I find it a bit more mild than the others, but still nice. My wife likes it as well. Nice subtle scent. I think I paid about $6 for a 15 oz bottle. Should last awhile.

Nobody has mentioned 'Stephan Bay Rum'.
I find that it is a really good product. It must have just a splash of alcohol (listed in the ingredients), because it doesn't burn on application and my skin seems to really respond well to it. There's no dryness, and a really nice subtle bay rum fragrance.
Price is great too .

Is Clubman Bay Rum a traditional bay rum scent? I picked up a bottle of it to try it and I can't get over the smell, to me it smells like Christmas cookies, that's not exactly what I was expecting.

Ha! I prefer to think of it as atomic fireballs, which I happen to love, by the way. I would drink this stuff if it wouldn't kill me.

But I have to say, my first whiff from my first bottle evoked a "huh?!!" type of reaction. But I have grown to love it.

Went by Shoppers Food and Pharmacy last night. They were out of the 750 ml Superior 70, but had the smaller bottles, which are 11 ounces or so, and around $2 and change, if I recall. They had about 8 bottles in that size.

They really are bad about restocking, although for the first time they had a good selection of Maja soap, instead of just a couple of items.

Clubman is right in there for traditional BR. Substantial cinnamon and cloves, which is absolutely correct as far as I can tell. The Superior 70 has little in the way of cinnamon and cloves. The Ogallala AS is fairly light on them, but as you go up to the cologne and special reserve cologne, the cinnamon and cloves become more intense. They also vary with the lime/peppercorns and other varieties.

The Masters (available from Sally Beauty Supply for $8 to $9 for a big 15 ounce size and zero shipping - but you have to go into a testosterone free zone for 5 minutes :-) ) and Dominica are both only made from the real essential oil of the plant (no synthetic fragrance oils) if that's important to you. I have the Masters and really like it. Plus at Sally's you can take a quick sniff of the Masters and see if you like it. Plus you can add a little orange, lime, or lemon essential oil to it and change it up.

I've only tried Pinaud/Clubman, SCS Bay Rum, SCS BR w/ a Twist. I love the SCS versions. The Pinaud is good but it is a little heavy on the clove and Cinnamon for my tastes.

How does the Ogallala and Dominican rate on the clove/cinnamon scale?

If I may hijack the thread for a second...does anyone know who makes the Col Conk Bay Rum? It may be alot cheaper buyinfg it straight from the source.

I have the TOBs and I really like it, not sweet in smell. Lasts about an hour on me, but I can smell it when I have a shower some 8 or so hours later.

I prefer Royall slightly, and am waiting on St Johns to complete a premium trifecta.

I would TOBS buy it again, but not from the retailer in Perth that charged me AUD $60!!!
