I acquired this film strip and it seems to show a slide show of shaving history and how blades are made. Could anyone translate the french to english? I can send out much higher resolution PDFs.

You can go to babelfish if you don't mind typing it into the translator yourself.

I could but those things never work entirely. I wanted to try and find a french speaking Gillette enthusiast first.

True. They won't give you exact translation and I'm sure that you are wanting to have that. But, in the interim, it can tell you the gist of what is going on. I am sure, though, that there are definitely fluent French speaking members that could be of assistance.

Very cool....even if I can't read it...Thanks for sharing this piece of history with us sir!
One for me...
Now, there can be various interpretations to the text but this is how I understand it.

STEEL
studied through a serie of modern applications
THE RAZOR BLADE

----
This normal object, intimatly bound in our modern lives is steel
----
It is flexible...
----
...Tough...

----
...and the sharpest edge that is.
----
...exceptionnally hard...
----
His history is the same than steel.

The fight for their life pushed the first men to enhance their weapons and tools...

finally, STEEL!

----
[Eiffel tower structure]
The XXth century is in the age of steel.
----
Steel built more than roads for the Romans.
----
Steel raised higher towers than the Babylonians.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips6.jpg
Steel imagined more wonders than the magicians from the thousand and one nights.
----
Next to those big realisations, steel entered our lives in modest forms.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips7.jpg
Properties of cast, iron and steel
----
Early XVIIIth century, a French scientist named Réaumur, showed that the quality of steel is attributed to the low quantity of carbon.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips8.jpg
---------pure cast - iron - steel
carbon - None - from 0.05 to 1.5% - from 2 to 5%
specific weight - 7 kg 8 - 7 kg 8 - 7 kg 8
Colour - Gray white - Blue white - dark gray
----
Cast is very malleable, especially hot
----
It is ductile
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips9.jpg
It is the most tenacious metal after nickel.
----
Steel is perfectly fluide at 1200 degrees and can be cast and molded
----
But she is fragile.
----
[Red iron] [bath]
The principal caracteristic of Iron is that it can be hardened
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips10.jpg
It then becomes hard
----
...elastic...
----
...and brittle
----
Hardened steel, heated and cooled slowly, loose part of is fragility but remain hard
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips11.jpg
Steel
----
Our Gaulois ancestors had reknowned forges
----
[Compressed air]
[Charcoal]
[steel particles] - Can't make all the words there
[Mineral]
[Charcoal]
The procdure to extract steel, by the Catalane method, was still used recently
----
Today, steel ore, very abundant in France...
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips12.jpg
is treated in furnaces where ore, carbon and steel are compressed
----
-A bit too small to read
----
Under the influence of heat, the carbonates are decomposed, the oxides reduced and ore transformed in steel.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips13.jpg
Steel is refined in a converter in a strong air current...
----
[Flames and slag]
[steel]
[cast fusion]
[compressed air]
...loose all his carbon and is transformed in pure iron.
----
By adding cast to a determined quantity of iron, we obtain steel.
----
Furthermore, modern blacksmith create special steel by voluntary adding one or many different elements.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips14.jpg
New manifacturing process developped different qualities or steel depending on their destinations.
----
A simple razor blade is precious testimony of mordern blacksmith
----
[MicroPhoto of Swedish steel]
Swedish steel associated to chromium is an excellent material
----
To be perfect, a good blade undergoes several operations...
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips15.jpg
[Beard of a 44 years old] [Beard of a 33 years old]
in response to accurate scientific data
----
-Can't read that one
----
The first element is a long steel tape rolled on itself.
----
Stamping presses penetrate the tape...
----
that passes through an electric tunnel furnace where she gets a series of high temperature treatments.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips16.jpg
Those treatments ensure the sharpness of the blade and an optimum hardness while conserving a sufficient flexibility.
----
The then tape passes on a machine that stamps the name, brand and a guarantee of quality.
----
Covered with a protective lacquer against rust...
----
a perfect blade gets his smoothness from the sharpening process by making it sharp.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips17.jpg
Two sharpening
----
One sharpening
----
and stropping with leather
----
The obtained sharpness, extra strong, is renforced with three bevels
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips18.jpg
The last element of the sharpening process sort the blades and stack them automatically.
----
The sharp and cutted blades verified by the inspection service.
----
During the packaging, done automatically...
----
the blade receive four dots of vaseline that will fix it on the waxed paper. Avoiding the precious edges to become blunt with the paper.
----
The obtained precision with this minutious manifacturing lead to the creation to the same principles of a scalpel.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk202/cuahtemoc123/clips19.jpg
Each year, the manifacturing of the blades requires 15,000 tons of steel. Enough to build 2 Eiffel towers.
----
Considered on a daily basis, this number shows how much steel contribute to our modern needs.
