Hi Folks,
Im a long time lurker, first time poster....I thought I'd share what led me to this great forum (Bit of a long story...)
Many, many years ago when I 1st started shaving, I was using those disposable bic razors ( you know the ones with the yellow handle, & white head?).This was fine for my teenage peach fuzz at the time, though soon I had to get something to carve through the swathe of stubble, which I'd progressed to.Enter, the Gillette Mach3. I used to get razor burn, & ingrown hairs frequently using this razor.....so I switched to a philips electric - no more razor burn, though ingrown hairs out the wazoo! Back to the Mach3 it was for me, seeing as though if I replaced blades at an alarming rate, it seemed like an OK solution.
About 5 years ago, I got fed up with the price of replacement cartridges decided to give a DE razor a try, & bought a cheapie at a local supermarket......man oh man was this a mistake! I popped a feather blade in, & proceeded to cut myself to shreds.Back to the Mach3 I went.
About a fortnight ago, I got the most ingrown, deep hair that I've ever had the misfortune to have to attempt to dig out with a pin.I'd finally had enough.Something needed to be done.....
So I upped the ante, & got myself a merkur 23c, some proraso pre/post shave creme & a tub of proraso shaving soap - after reading good things about all these products here (I've been using a brush & el cheapo shave sticks for ages).
Thismorning was my 1st shave with this new kit, & I 've gotta say , I was more than a little nervous about being cut to smithereens as I was last time with a DE....even moreso that I have a 1st date tonight! :).
I got down to it though, & I'll be damned if after a 4 pass shave (one with the grain, one sideways, & two against)if this isnt the SMOOTHEST shave I've ever had.No nicks, no razor burn - nada.It took me about an hour to accomplish ( I was being extremely careful!) But this isnt an issue as I'm normally a night time shaver, & Im sure that given a few weeks I'll have it down pat.
So thats my story so far.....Im a convert.
Next stop, using that straight razor I got as a groomsman present last year (Im realistic though, & dont quite want to spring for the strop, hone etc just yet!).
From what I can tell, this seems like a great forum & I'm looking forward to jumping in :)
Cheers guys,
Simon.
