It's from a song that was in Office Space. Someone made mention of a diary. That's where the connection is. Right there.

Pretty lame. It's her bday. I made dinner. Which was awesome, of course. We split books and dvds and lame stuff. I told her to take all the wedding stuff because I don't want it. Gave her her bday present and she seemed hurt by it for whatever reason. I bought it a while back and there is no use for me to keep it. She dropped a bomb - she's keeping my last name. I have NO idea how to feel about that. She spent more time blaming me about whatever she possibly could.

I couldn't possibly begin to know what you're going through at this time...I've ended long relationships but never have I gone through divorce. What I am about to say, you may take with a grain of salt or an ounce of gold: It really seems as if she's a child about all of this. She scorned you, and now she's just pouring salt on the wounds. As rough as it all is, you should at least be able to go to bed at night knowing you're the better person in all of this. Do not let her ridiculous behavior in this matter preclude you from being as happy as you possibly can, and being the bigger person gets you there.

Happy &@#$% Wednesday!

Oh boy. Crappy luck there, Shep. Hope that termite guy gets there ASAP. When I was young, my grandmother had termites at one point. It's tough to see termite infestations a lot of the time. If you've got any tree stumps or old wood in the garden, check those. Also, check the outside of your house. If you've got wooden siding - good luck. Check all points of entry, too. Windows, doors, etc.

You'll be looking for a number of things. Check for mud tubes, which are about the width of a finger, but can be smaller or larger, on foundation and crawl space walls. If you see some, break open the tubes. If there are cream-colored bugs in there, there's an infestation. It's possible that the colony is dead or using another route to get in if no insects fall out.

If you've got any damp wood lying around, check that for dried dirt in the hollow spots. Termites will also eat dry wood, leaving a blistered sort of look that when pressed, breaks easily.

If you see any little light brown pellets that look like sand or wood dust, it may be termite droppings. Also, if you see little wings lying around inside, that's not good.

Good bit of activity in here today. Nice to see everyone back at work.

The worst halloween candy ever is those peanut-butter-flavored wax candies that come wrapped in black and orange wax paper. I swear, those things are the fruitcake of the candy world.

I resent that remark. I LOVE a good homemade Caribbean black cake (like a fruitcake, but boozier and more moist and delicious). They're typically made for Christmas.

My personal opinion is that the worst Halloween candy ever is Candy Corn. It repulses me. It's made from wax (carnauba or bee's), sugar, and corn syrup. I can't stand the texture and it just doesn't sound or taste appealing to me. Apparently, I'm in the minority.

I'm not huge on tattoos. My girlfriend toyed around with the idea of getting a small tattoo somewhere (can't remember where - somewhere that can't be seen when you've got clothes on) of a rose or a butterfly or something like that sometime last year for some symbolic reason. She seems like she's going to pass on it for now.

Personally, tattoos are not my cup of tea, nor are piercings. For a moderately liberal person, I'm pretty backwards and conservative when it comes to some things.

Are all the tattoos you have in the shape of a t-shirt or something like that? I remember seeing a special on one of the educational channels a year or two ago about this Japanese businessman who loved tattoos, but couldn't have them visible during work, so he had them done below collar level, ending before the wrists, etc. There's a super-interesting sub-culture attributed to tattooing that's quite fascinating to me (out comes the sociologist). Just wanted to clear it up in case I was misunderstood that I have no problems with tattoos. No offense was intended - I just wouldn't wear a tattoo myself.

The car is still mine. I just can't afford to make that payment and the payment on the Mazda so a guy at work is driving the Legacy. He's gonna finish out the rest of the lease for me. Fine with me. I owe too much money on the Mazda to get rid of it, so I sit on that one for a while longer. No way a WRX would have been any cheaper. My payment on the Legacy is sub-$200.

I make a mean pot of chili too. It's my step moms recipe and it be fantastic.

1 lb burger
1 lb sausage
Few cans of chili beans
Package of Chile seasoning
Chili powder
1 Onion
Couple cans of stewed tomatoes
Large can of V8
Salt, pepper, whatever other seasonings you enjoy.
Stew it up all day in a crock pot.
Eat till you spew from both ends and then eat some more.

Chili rocks...without beans = barely chili

EDIT:
okay, you knew I had to post it:
Texas Chili
NOTE: Please take time to read this slowly. If you pay attention to the first two judges, the reaction of the third is even better.
For those of you who have lived in Texas, you know how true this is. They actually have a Chili cook-off about the time the rodeo comes to town. It takes up a major portion of the parking lot at the Astrodome. The notes are from an inexperienced chili taster named Frank, who was visiting Texas from the East Coast:

Frank: "Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table asking directions to the Budweiser truck, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Native Texans) that the chili wouldn't be all that spicy and, besides, they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, So I accepted."

Here are the scorecards from the event:

Chili # 1 Mike's Maniac Mobster Monster Chili
Judge # 1 A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.
Judge # 2 Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild
Judge # 3 (Frank) Holy s**t, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that's the worst one. These Texans are crazy.

Chili # 2 Arthur's Afterburner Chili
Judge # 1 - Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang.
Judge # 2 -- Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.
Judge # 3 -- Keep this out of the reach of children. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.

Chili # 3 Fred's Famous Burn Down the Barn Chili
Judge # 1 -- Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick. Needs more beans.
Judge # 2 -- A beanless chili, a bit salty, good use of peppers
Judge # 3 -- Call the EPA. I've located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I'm getting s**t-faced from all of the beer.

Chili # 4 Bubba's Black Magic
Judge # 1 -- Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.
Judge # 2 -- Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.
Judge # 3 -- I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out tastebuds? Sally, the barmaid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. That 300-lb. woman is starting to look HOT -- just like this nuclear waste I'm eating. Is chili an aphrodisiac?

Chili # 5 Linda's Legal Lip Remover
Judge # 1 -- Meaty, strong chili. Cayenne peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.
Judge # 2 -- Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the cayenne peppers make a strong statement.
Judge # 3 -- My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I'm burning my lips off. It really pisses me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming.
Screw those rednecks.

Chili # 6 Vera's Very Vegetarian Variety
Judge # 1 -- Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers.
Judge # 2 -- The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, and garlic. Superb.
Judge # 3 -- My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I s**t myself when I farted and I'm worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that slut Sally. She must be kinkier than I thought. Can't feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.

Chili # 7 Susan's Screaming Sensation Chili
Judge # 1 -- A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.
Judge # 2 -- Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment. I should take note that I am worried about Judge # 3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.
Judge # 3 -- You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn't feel a thing. I've lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they'll know what killed me. I've decided to stop breathing, its too painful. Screw it, I'm not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I'll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach.

Chili #8 Tommy's Toe-Nail Curling Chili
Judge # 1 -- The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Judge # 2 -- This final entry is a good, balance chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge # 3 passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor dude, wonder how he'd have reacted to really hot chili.

All nine parts came through fine in email Dom. Thanks a bunch. I don't think any of those parts are Ode to Joy however; am I correct or crazy?

Oh. This is Mozart's Requiem I'm sending you. Ode to Joy is entirely different - it's Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Sorry if there was any confusion. Which of the two did you want?

Well I have enjoyed what you sent me, but I would really like a copy of Ode to Joy if you have it. It's one of my favorites. That and Vivaldi Four Seasons which was stolen during my break in. I know, a lot of folks poo poo Vivaldi but I find it uplifting and triumphant.

There are three more parts to the requiem if you want them - let me know.

Sorry to hear those got stolen. I've got a number of copies of Beethoven's 9th, to tell you the truth. I think I've got about 11 different recordings. The last movement is quite large, so it might be best for me to just burn a copy of it for you and send it snail mail. Unfortunately, I will have a difficult time deciding which copy to send you. I haven't come across what I would call a 'definitive' recording of the Ninth as of yet.

With regards to Vivaldi, you are correct in noting the poo pooing directed at him. For very long, he was regarded as mediocre and as having no substance. I believe there's some quote about him from a more recent composer that says that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto 500 times (or something to that nature). More recently, however, scholars have been seeing that there was quite a bit going on in his work. The great J.S. Bach actually transcribed and arranged a number of Vivaldi's pieces (and was influenced by Vivaldi's models in some of his works). If Bach though Vivaldi was good enough, then to hell with all those people that poo poo Vivaldi.

If you don't mind burning off a copy and mailing it I'd take it. I'll let you decide which version. My only request is I would like it to be choral rather than just instrumental. The singing is half the joy. I'm no classical music expert. I simply hear a piece and decide if it moves me or not.

One singing copy on the way. I'll try and get that to you with a sample of Salter's Mint. I actually ran out of sample containers recently, so I'll attempt at rigging something up for you.

Anyway... Beethoven's 9th is actually just under 70 minutes in it's entirety. It consists of four large movements. Only the fourth movement has vocal parts. Most of the time, when you hear 'Ode to Joy' on mainstream media sources, it's a truncated version. Sorry if I'm coming off as snobby or pretentious. I'm really passionate about this stuff and seeing as the general public has a number of misconceptions and unfamiliarity with the material, I really like educating about it.

I feel kinda awful saying this, but we've got a good orchestra playing under a crappy conductor here. Also, the vocalists are quite poor and make me cringe. Not trying to insult you here, Shep - just my observations and opinion.

Did a little snooping - I believe this one was done by the Cleveland Orchestra (quite a good orchestra) under direction of Lorin Maazel (a conductor I'm not familiar with).

Some of the greatest recordings of this piece are over 50 years old. Conductors Furtwängler, Toscanini, and Klemperer (which all recorded in the early 50s) stand out to me as some of the greatest, though they are not definitive. It's such an incredibly long, intensely grueling and demanding piece. Couple that with my desire for perfection and you've got a tough customer. I'm not entirely satisfied with any one recording. At least I can laugh at myself and admit that I'm crazy.

What do you think of this one? It's a little slower and very, very German in approach (very bass-centered). I'm trying to get a grasp on what type of recording you'd prefer.

You'd have to go a long way beyond this to insult me Dom. I have figured out through my highly analytical mind and powers of deduction (and the fact that you both talk about it a lot) that both you and Shane are music efficianados to the n-th degree. I really wouldn't know a competent conductor from a flying hot dog, and will defer expert judgments to the two of you. I just enjoyed having the music in the background whilst we chatted. Hmm... at $2, it would be hard to go wrong. Usually, I stay away from those 'collection' and 'best of' CDs as they are oftentimes performed by obscure groups/orchestras. However, I will admit that they are a great bargain, especially if when you don't want to pay top dollar for CDs (I've spent $30 or more on sets containing only 2 CDs way too many times to admit it). Many times, they are decent recordings as well.

I'm going to link to a performance of one of the movements from Vivaldi's Summer performed by the Venice Baroque Orchestra. This group is fantastic and put out my favorite recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. They perform on period instruments (instruments that attempt to replicated the sound and feel of instruments that would have been around when the piece was composed) - note the lute (guitar-like thing) and the harpsichord (tiny piano that makes *plucky* noises). Carmignola, the main violinist is amazing. He and the guy on the harpsichord (Marcon) make an amazing pair. I've got a number of their recordings and I have nothing but praise for them.

Very lively performance. Beautifully played. Enjoy, everyone:

To my way of thinking a metrosexual man is named Bif, Dash, Slade or something similar. He has a bathroom cabinet akin to a womans full of grooming gels, sprays, lubes, lotions, pastes and tools. He does things like tweeze his eyebrows, waxes excess body hair, applies colored toners to hide skin blemishes, plucks nad-fuzz and yes...shaves down there. He spends a lot of money buying expensive clothes and shoes that he thinks projects an I-don't-have-a-care-in-the-world-because-I'm-so-damn-pretty image. He orders dry Vodka Martinis for the sophistication aspect he thinks it provides him. He dates woman named Aurora, Savana, Haley or Storm, and he drives a leased Mercedes, BMW or Saab.

Did you say "plucks nad-fuzz". Man that must hurt. Honestly, being in Boston, I do see a lot of that. The area in which I live is full of 'alternative' and 'hipster' people, but if you go downtown (to Newbury street), you will quite frequently stumble across people that fit the description above.

In all honesty, I think a lot of us here do fit part of the mold. Most of us have at least one medicine cabinet full (of shaving stuff, of course) or more. I trim my chest, nose, and down-there-hair with scissors or a beard groomer and do own two bottles of stuff for my hair to prevent it from turning into a puffy mess (my hair is about 5 or 6 inches long and has a tendency to get really dry and is cause for laughter sometimes). Mind you, you can't actually tell that there's anything in my hair when I use it. I do have moisturizer and lip balm that I use, especially when it gets cold and dry here. When I was living in a warmer, more humid climate, I rarely ever used lip balm, moisturizer, or anything in my hair. I guess my environment now is a little more stressful on my body.

In any case, I don't think any of us are BMW leasing vodka martini drinkers with bimbo girlfriends named America (or some other silly name - my apologies to those who think the name of a country is a good name for a person). There are a number of us here, though, that take the time to groom ourselves. I think the whole metrosexual thing is spawning from the acceptance of a man that is more in touch with his feminine side. Society is becoming more accepting to the gay lifestyle and things that are perceived as less manly and more womanly are now acceptable for guys to do. As such, less people fear being labeled as and stigmatized as gay or a poof.

Also... real martinis are made with gin. Vodka martinis are for women. And metrosexuals.

EDIT: I do think that these guys exist, but finding one that is the stereotype portrayed in the media is a more difficult task. If you look at major cities such as Boston, Miami, San Fransisco, etc., you will note a larger percentage of metrosexual-like people and acceptance than in other places (this is my observation, at least).

Leave it to Dom to get all logical on me. Mostly that was a tongue in cheek observation; I was aware while writing it that many of us fit some part of the description (if however you fit my entire description then you are a lost cause I'm afraid--sorry). Honestly I really don't see many of these types here in Phoenix. Of course I don't spend a lot of time in Scottsdale and if anyplace here were going to have them that would be the place. Mostly it's the word I don't like: metrosexual. Sounds like groping on a city bus to me. Men have been grooming and taking care of themselves for a millenia or two and we never needed a word for it other than good hygiene.

Good on ya Dom. You're my kind of people!

I haven't even thought about lunch yet today.

I have. I need to get lunch ASAP. I'm starving here.

On a completely unrelated note, I shaved half of my face with a cartridge razor and half of my face with a DE this morning. No irritation on either side, but the side I shaved with the cartridge razor is dryer than the side I shaved with the DE. I started using balms more often because it's getting colder here and the dry winds are making my face uncomfortably dry and itchy.

The razor was a Schick Quatro with the beard trimmer on the bottom. It was sent to me free in the mail, so I figured I'd try it out after seeing all the fights about cartridges v.s. DEs lately. It's a big, bulky monster of a razor, but feels really cheap in your hand. Big difference between the DE and the Cartridge: the cartridge razor clogged easily and was difficult to rinse my coarse beard shavings out of.

Anyway... I did one pass on each side of my face. Feels about the same on both cheeks, but there is a slight difference on the neck. This may be the result of a spot on my right neck that grows in a slightly different direction than the rest of my neck, so I'm not about to chalk it upto a fault in the DE just yet.

Results: I'm not going to be going back to a cartridge. For a similar shave in the same amount of time, I'll take the cheaper option that feels like it was constructed with more quality. Also, the DE seems to treat my face better (my assumption is because you're actually doing less passes with a DE as there's only one blade on your face at a time instead of the four or whatever that the cartridge has).

Final Score:
DE = 1, Cartridge = 0

I shaved with an old disposable this morning that was mostly clogged with hair. That was lame. I deserve it for getting up so early, though.

You do realize that you have just cross-connected cyber life with real life right? Don't you know what can happen when worlds collide man!?! (ask George Costanza or Cory). If you're not careful you will create a rift in the time-space continuum causing gremlins to enter our reality. I wonder what they will make of our metrosexuals?

Leave it to Dom to get all logical on me. Mostly that was a tongue in cheek observation; I was aware while writing it that many of us fit some part of the description (if however you fit my entire description then you are a lost cause I'm afraid--sorry). Honestly I really don't see many of these types here in Phoenix. Of course I don't spend a lot of time in Scottsdale and if anyplace here were going to have them that would be the place. Mostly it's the word I don't like: metrosexual. Sounds like groping on a city bus to me. Haha. Thought you were asking an actual serious question. Didn't get the tongue and cheek observation part of it originally. I do agree that if you fit the entire description, then you're a lost cause. I was reading through your original post and I wanted to add something to it. When you give a list containing gels, sprays, lubes, lotions, pastes and tools, I would like to add potions to it. There was this great add on the radio when I was a kid for this little shop that sold women's supplies. It was a catchy jingle about the things they sold and went something like "We've got fragrances, lotions, great *something* and potions, we've got great, great buys!"

Thanks for stirring up my childhood there, Shep. I'm going to go see if I can find that add somewhere online.

Also, metrosexual doesn't conjure up images of people groping on a city bus to me. Maybe on the underground, though.

Nothing spectacular. A bologna sandwich with Muenster cheese. Very, very plain. Lunch was eaten rather late today, so I'm not sure what I'll be doing for dinner. Hopefully, I'll get to sleep at a reasonable hour so I don't need to cook tonight. I'll be traveling soon, so some proper rest will do me good. Anyone been to Chicago before? Are there any places (shaving related or otherwise) that I should go?
