To the Czar of the great land of the great Cheddar Kingdom,
This humble wench has come to kneel at the feet of the Czar and and beg His forgiveness for making a wrong decision. She wishes to give up rum and ale and that pirates teach and wishes to become the lady within. She asks for permission to become an active member of the Cheddar Kingdom. She wishes to ask that she be allowed to serve Him as another soapmaker with an endless supply of tallow for the kingdom. To help where she can and to serve her royal Czar with nothing less than 100% honorable intentions. She gives her loyalty and directly to Him.
This humble servant realizes that she has made a terrible mistake. She has seen the ways of the Cheddar Kingdom and more importantly the ways of the Czar. She wishes to be a part of the great Cheddar Kingdom that she has longed to be a part of for awhile now as she watched from a distance. But sadly she got mixed up with the wrong crowd and asks that He forgive her and allow her to follow her heart and obey her Czar. She appreciates all the the Great Czar is doing for the members of B&B and desires his protection. In return she will give everything that she has to make Him proud of His humble servant.
All Hail The Cheddar Kingdom,
Lady Krissy

Jesse, keep it up and you'll have the record for most B&B members met in person (if you don't already!).
I really don't like preseason football very much compared to the "real thing," but I'll be watching tonight nonetheless. Why? There's no other football on. Now if the weather would just become more fall-like I'd be in my favorite time of year.

How much difference will that make for me as a newbie?
Shouldn't make any difference as far as building the bow, but every bow maker, imho, needs to learn the ins and out of wood (leave this alone, Jim) and by cutting your own from trees and working it down to a stave, you can't help but learn.
davecmu (Dave) and alabamalawyer (Chris) are fantastic people. Plus, they taught me a few things about straight razors and brushes. What an enjoyable evening!
I'm glad to hear you've continued to find fun people to meet with from B&B land.

Agreed on both points. Preseason football stinks as far as NFL goes but it's better than reruns of Superbowls. Also, +1 on the weather. Fall is my favorite time of the year for many reasons, and especially because of the temp.

How long does it take for a stave to dry?
It really depends on many factors. First and most important is the size of the stave (again Jim, leave this comment alone ). When I split a tree into quarters (with each stave about 6" in diameter), it can take from 6 months to a year to properly dry. A 3" by 2" board-sized stave can take much less time, maybe a month or less. Then, it depends on the environment it's placed in. Dryer and hotter storage will mean faster curing, but it also can be too extreme and warp the stave in unfriendly directions, too.
Try doing some searches for drying wood to get more details. If you want bow wood now, I'd go for lumber from the yard to start.
Whoo hoo! I started page 700!

probably quite a bit since a bow is a curvi-linear shape and one must also calculate the draw force, etc. etc. etc.

Clearly you've never been to Singapore....
I have been to S'pore many many many times. I use to go there monthly for years to visit my allergy doctor, my dentist because I had braces and I also had major reconstructive surgery on my knee at Mt. Elizabeth Hospital. And after my surgery the company my dad worked for arranged for us to stay at "palm court" i believe the name was. It's an apartment building fairly close to the hospital. Much better to recover there than the Hilton! (After all I remember how much i hated those 3 months we had to live in the Hilton in Jakarta until our house was completed) It's been years but I think my dentist's name was Dr. Yeo Key Quan, and I also had to see a Dr. Chaca in Emergency one night when I had to make an emergency trip to Singapore to see an orthopedic surgeon when I fractured my shoulder. Didn't need surgery thank goodness.
I loved shopping in Metro, riding the subway with my friends who had moved there and even taking the bus down to Sargaroon road. (sp) We use to buy Basmati rice there. There was a basken robinsons ice cream place pretty close to the Royal Holiday Inn that i liked to go to once in awhile, and shop at Toys-r-Us down the road from the Hilton. A bit of a walk but worth it. The road to the airport is long but extremely beautiful with all the flowers and trees. Oh and the taxi's, comfort taxies were all blue then and had a tiny bumper sticker that were long and narrow. And they said "if you can read this then your too close for comfort". *smiles softly at those memories*
Plus my passport has more stamps from Singapore than it does from the states!
I absolutely loved going to Singapore........

No it's a really word. See:
Main Entry: cur·vi·lin·ear
Pronunciation: \ˌkər-və-ˈli-nē-ər\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin curvus + linea line
Date: 1696
1 : consisting of or bounded by curved lines : represented by a curved line
2 : marked by flowing tracery <curvilinear Gothic>
— cur·vi·lin·ear·i·ty \-ˌli-nē-ˈer-ə-tē, -ˈa-rə-\ noun

Oh, someone mentioned football... so. I have a proposition. I will play fantasy football this year (skipped last year for the first time in 10 years) but I'd like to play with a group of friends/acquaintances vs just some strangers that sign up online who quit playing two weeks into the season. I've played on Yahoo or NFL.com mostly. This would be a competitive league only, no money involved.
Anyone interested?

LOL that was why we flew to Singapore in an emergency, (first available flight out), the doctor in Jakarta (that drew my x-ray) wanted to do surgery there and was trying to contact a local surgeon. Thank goodness it was a holiday and he was having a hard time finding one. My mom was freaking out and saying if it was that serious we were flying back to the states but my dad said we would have a doctor look at it in Singapore look at it first. I think he got his MD out of a cracker jack box. Least to say I didn't get a second trip back to the states that year.

Was at a friends house and the had a trampoline. Least to say there were too many kids on it, and I got shoved off. Hairline fracture on my shoulder. (real x-rays taken in Singapore proved the damage) Hurt like a you know what. Couldn't move my arm, but all i had to do was wear a sling for 3 months and I couldn't participate in gym class for 3 months because they didn't want to do more damage. (I got teased a lot because I couldn't play in gym.) But at least they didn't need to slice my arm open. I must have been about 10 or 11 when that happened. Good thing it was my right arm cause I prefer to write with my left hand.

I shoot only occasionally. I actually make them for the fun of making them. As far as range and accuracy, that more depends on the archer, but ideally, the 45#-60# bows should be competitive with the compound bows most hunters use.

Sorry I didn't answer your question better. I hope this makes more sense. A typical bow such as mine will shoot about 150 feet per second. A decent archer can be very accurate up to 25 yards with accuracy lessening substantially after that. A more powerful version of these longbows, in the hands of a skilled archer, can do well at a 100 yards.
Also, if I get some time tomorrow afternoon, I'll set up a NoTitleLeague, maybe on NFL.com, for us to do an FFL on if you'd like.

Nice hats everyone.
Yeah, original idea gents! :nono:
Is this what they mean by Pirate Booty?
That picture is clearly photo-shopped my guess is it must be a family picture of a member of the Tsardom (oh yes, that's right it is Tsar, not Czar). I also bet that a goofy fuzzy hat was removed to add the Pirate hat.
That's right Slagle, the attempted coup is, indeed, over.
These guys are too cute. We get a half dozen people to do do nothing more than attach a silly hat to their avatar and suddenly everyone who frequents the Clown House has to follow suit and borrow the hat of the self proclaimed Czar and assumes that something is going to happen, some all powerful coup? A coup of what, absurdities in a forum called the clown house?
:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Yes secretly we amass an army. What would we need an army for? Superman is nearly indestructable.

I am in no way endorsing the Pirates, but I have to side with Slagle on this one. I prefer more "natural" booty. Not enhanced swimsuit models. Even the Dark Side of the Force had its pros. Pirate booty=good. But, let us not forget one little fact. Where does pirate booty come from? That's right, Ladies and Gentlemen. They steal it from us. Which means we have just as good if not better, and more of it.

You what I really don't understand about this whole pirate thing? Why do they reject the Czar? I mean thanks to His Most Graciousness, we have full excess to the arts:
http://www.notempire.com/images/uploads/Cheddar-Square.jpg
And let's not forget top-notch literature:
http://www.np.edu.sg/lib/announce/top20archive/top%2020%20may/pics/books/who%20moved%20my%20cheese.jpg
We also have access to other forms of entertainment such as a world class fair:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1341/1064434040_62acc405fd_o.jpg
And freedom from hunger! I mean just look at those curds!
http://www.mousehousecheese.com/images/CurdYellow.jpg
Of course the Czar offers much more than just this. Still the question remains why reject his love. We of the Czardom of Cheddar are free from hunger and want. We have access to the best in entertainment, literature, education and cheese. Join us! Join the us in this blessed land of cheesy goodness and prosper like you have never prospered before! :w00t:

Ok, all. I've set us up a League through Yahoo Sports. I wanted to do and NFL.com league, but without paying premium, I couldn't alter any of the default settings, such as a minimum 12 team league.
Here is the link: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/notitleleague
If you or one of your friends (B&B members only please) wants to join, pm me for the password. That's the only rule. As suggested by someone, I think the no title thread is a fine place to talk a little FFL when the time arises.
Just to give you the heads up, I've set it up with a LIVE draft on the 29th of August at 2pm Central. The other rules you can read when you get to the site. I set the league up based on many years of experience with what I liked and disliked about other leagues I've played in. Nothing too weird and I hope it balances the points so that no one player or player type will dominate.
Let the GAMES begin!

I've heard of it but I really don't watch any TV. The most TV I watch is at 0300 in the morning while eating my lunch. As you can imagine, I don't see much of the prime time line-up.
