A quick report on my Sprouts trip. Most of this has been talked about elsewhere on B&B, but if anyone happens along here they can get a refresher course. Their shave products selection is limited but I think what they have is interesting.
Several flavors of KMF shave cream @ $7; I picked up the lime but haven't used it yet. Also two or three flavors of Alba Shave cream and Waleda brushless (both under $10). Waleda and Alba also have balms and pre shave scrubs. They carry Thayers witch hazel in regular and rose petal (I got this one) for $10. I didn't see any Toms of Maine, but I think I'm going to pass on this as I don't like the reviews on it. There was some other brand of creams in a tube that I really didn't look at. I think they are brushless too which doesn't interest me.
I found two AS's. Aubrey North Woods for $10 which I purchased. Smells kind of woodsy in the bottle and very nice once applied. It reminds me of Floids sort of. Doesn't last long though at perhaps two hours. They carried a second brand that I am prob. going to mess up the name: My Chelle??? Something like that. It smells very nice in the bottle; kind of flowery. However once applied (they had a tester bottle for those that got mad at me in my L. Vegetal thread) it immediately faded. My wife said she could detect a faint odor, but not much. At $20 it's a lot to pay for something that fades this quickly. That's about it. Spent around $25 and picked up three nice new products.

Oh.
Funny story...
A co-worker of mine and I flew into Dulles to do some Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity testing at IBM in Gaithersburg. Now, this guy has made this trip 20-30 times at least, but when we picked up the rental car, he asked me if I wanted to drive or navigate. Huh? I'm thinking he should drive because he (theoretically) should know where we're going, so I opted for the navigator role. He tells me that Gaithersberg is in the direction of Fredericksburg*, so we'll head that way. Um...ok. I tell him to head south on 95.:rolleyes::rolleyes:
An hour and a half later we're in beautiful downtown Fredericksburg. He tells me, "Uh...this doesn't look familiar." Then we looked at each other and simultaneously shout, "Gaithersburg in Maryland!!!" :w00t:
The extra travel time padded my paycheck nicely.
*As it turned out, he meant to say Frederick, which is off of 270, just north of Gaithersburg.

So...... I finally smoked a pipe of Salvia. I must say it is not for the faint of heart!! One real heavy draw from my glass pipe, and a few seconds later I was on my way...........wow!!
Intense visual and auditory hallucinations, very nice body high, and euphoria galor. It reminded me of peaking on some old school blotter acid. I was instantly thrown through a wormhole into a galaxy of crystals and colorful oil paintings. Then I was pulled back through at the speed of light and transported to an ocean-like world, where all sound and light was muddled, and life was peaceful. Ten minutes later, I felt as though it never happened. The only traces were a feeling of absolute joy and tranquility that are still lingering.
Powerful stuff!! If you have never tripped before, I would caution you to pass this stuff up. Too potent for a novice user. Of course, the Salvia I have is 80x extract (80 times normal strength).

Yep, that's exactly how I feel about my boss right now. (Thanks, THECHEBB, for finding that pic.)
Here it is, my Labor Day half-shift is over and done with, and just like I predicted, there was no reason at all for me to be there.
I wasted about $7.00 in gas to get there and back.
2-1/2 hours of driving.
I spent $11.50 on a big breakfast after work, instead of eating at home.
I missed out on my favorite nightclub's biggest party of the year Sunday night, because I had to leave for work at 3am.
I overslept and didn't hear the alarm. I woke up at 2:55 and had to rush out the door with out going through my normal get-ready-for-work routine, which made the whole day really hard.
And when I finally got there, he put me and 2 other guys on a project that took us about 1.5 hours, a project that the regular guy could have done all by himself in about 3 hours with plenty of time to spare. The rest of my half-shift was doing busy-work and "fluffing up" my department.
All in all, a big waste of time and money today.

Welcome home dpm. That was indeed a bummer. As mentioned I worked all weekend too so I feel your pain. lynch is right; grab an adult beverage, kick back and watch old movies all day if you can.
I checked that NWS website and the storm is ashore as of now. Supposedly the levees in N.O. are expected to hold. Good news.
Shaved w/ T&H 1805 this am. Gotta say I'm not a big fan of the T&H. I tried three different samplers and none of them were very slick (yes, my water ratios were good). I know a lot of guys like it, but I won't be one of them. Since it's one of the pricier brands this is a good thing. I have the next two days off & will prob. not shave, but Thurs. I will give the KMF lime a try.
Saw a sad story in the paper today about two idiots drag racing on a city street. One of them blew a red light and killed everyone in another car. This seems to happen w/ some regularity here. You would think high school kids or teenagers right? Sometimes yes, but more often than not it's grown men in their 20's or 30's doing the racing. What jackasses. Goes to show maturity and decency have nothing to do w/ age. He's being charged w/ manslaughter; should be murder in my book.

Yeah, the office politics is definitely a factor here. My boss is newly promoted into this position, one that I had also interviewed for. He just turned 21 last week, and I think he's getting a little power-hungry now that he can order people around.
I'll say this, over-all, he's a good supervisor. Very much on the ball, takes a lot of pride in his work, and doesn't believe in cutting corners when it comes to getting the work done. Totally unlike the last supervisor, who was bored with the work, didn't like being in charge, and was weak and spineless when it came to standing up to anybody that challenged him. (He left to go to Truck-Driving school in early July.)
Unfortunately, when this new boss accepted the big bump in pay, he decided to amputate his sense of humor. He used to be a fun guy to work WITH. He's not so much fun to work FOR. He takes the job way too seriously, and he thinks that because he's become a work-a-holic, everyone else on the crew should be, also.
I'm assuming you're home now, so if you haven't already, pour yourself a drink and choose a nice cigar or pack a nice pipe and enjoy the remainder of your day!
I was done with work at 08:30 ... ate a nice big breakfast at the diner on the way home, did some grocery shopping, bought an alarm clock, then came home and surfed the internet, read the mail, got caught up on B&B and some of my other regular forums, and looked at some really fine pornography online.
The idea of an adult beverage and a nice cigar hadn't really occurred to me, but since you said it's OK, that's what I'm doing as I'm typing this. I've got a shot of Johnny Walker Green on a single ice cube, paired up with a small Macanudo cigar.
Once I finish the cigar and the Scotch, I think I'll go take a shower and shave. It should be fun shaving with an alcohol buzz on. I bought some travel-size KMF products last night that I'm anxious to try out. There's a Feather loaded in my HD, or maybe I'll use the FatBoy with an ASR blade. Oh, what the hell, maybe I'll use one on my left cheek and the other on my right. This is America ... and I should be able to do what I want, right?

No offense to any brothers who are 21 years old, but that is awfully young to be promoted to boss/supervisor don't you think dpm? Frankly I didn't feel I had reached any level of life experience or worldly wisdom until my later 30's. Now I'm 40 and still don't have it all figured.
I just think it's a lot to ask having one so young carry the burden of leadership. Of course the worlds' militaries have done it for centuries with some success so maybe I'm crazy.

Yeah, so here it is just under an hour later, and that's what I did. I washed my face with KMF Olive/Aloe soap, lathered up with KMF unscented shave cream.
I held the FatBoy+ASR blade in my left hand and shaved the right side of my face. Then I held the HD+Feather in my right hand and shaved the left side of my face. (Both blades had one previous use on them.) Sorry, but I didn't count the number of passes or whether I went WTG or N/S or anything ... it was just a quickie shave. Rinsed with cold water, then finished it off with KMF moisturizing cream, Lavender and Shea, which feels and smells great.
The results ... I got a better than DFS shave on both my cheeks, slightly less than average results on my neck. I could have gotten better with more passes, but I wasn't really shooting for anything, I just wanted to shave.
In other words, I broke away from traditional thinking and used two different razors and two different blades to do one shave.
Do you think they would allow this radical action in North Korea? In another time and place, the Gestapo would be at my door before I could finish rinsing. There are some people on this earth who would be happy with just one good razor and one sharp blade, but yet I have 6 razors to choose from, 10 different brands of blades on hand, and I can't even count the number of soaps and creams and ASBs and other stuff I could have used.
The resulting shave doesn't matter. The important thing is having CHOICES and OPTIONS and FREE WILL.

Yes, you are right about his tender age ... but there was more to the story. He had been working the job for just under 2 years. I had about 90 days on the crew. Admittedly, he knew the job far better than I did, particularly when it came to the paperwork involved.
More importantly, he is a legacy. His grandfather retired from the same supervisor job he's holding now just a few years ago. So I think there may have been some nepotism involved in his promotion.
Prior to his promotion, his main concerns in life were skate-boarding and getting high. Since then, he claims he doesn't have time for either, between work and going to college. He did ride his skateboard out in the parking lot one day last week ... its one of the few times since his promotion that he seems to be having fun again. I believe him when he says he's not getting high anymore, either.
He's been taking it all seriously ... he's much more visible than the last supervisor, but without being in our face all the time. The last boss just sat at his desk most of the day. The new kid is all over the place. I didn't realize before how much actual work is involved in being the supervisor of our crew. He got a 50% raise, but he has to work 200% harder.
When he cuts off his dreadlocks, then we'll know that he's really grown up.
In any case, he's got the job for now. There are other promotion opportunities available on other shifts, and I'm keeping my eye on them. But I like the shift that I'm on (04:30~13:00) because its very quiet until the store opens at 09:00 and there are no managers or customers around to bother us. And we get done early enough that there's still time to go out and do stuff the rest of the day. When his slot comes open again, I'll apply again, and feel pretty sure I'll get it next time around.

Ray - How did you know exactly what I was doing? I spent the entire day with my girlfriend today. Her older sister had a family BBQ at her house that I went to. He sister has two little girls that are 5 and 7 or something along those lines. I did indeed spend a great portion of my time there scaring the kids.

Glad to be back. I haven't been home in about 24 hours. I'm decompressing here on B&B for a little and then I'm going to go take a nice warm shower and shave with one of my straights.
I'm not sure what shaving cream or soap to use though. :tongue_sm
I'm contemplating trying out Cella for the first time, but I'm not sold on the idea (got a sample from a friend recently). I'm considering a rose scent (I've got SCS, QED, Taylors, Trumpers Rose Soap, and Salters). I'm thinking I want something drier, though. Like Tabac, CADE, sandalwood, or one of the Gentlemans Refinery Creams. I love samples. They give you a chance to try out so many new things.

Lately though I've become extremely dyslexic on the keyboard. reversing the order of letters, leaving letters out of words, constantly using the backspace to make corrections. I'm really tired of the cats that are having sex outside my window. My yard has become the go to spot for all the kitties that want to have a good time. I readily admit that I'm not a fan of cats - dogs rule - but I respect a cat's right to assemble. I just don't understand why it's gotta be in my yard, outside my window. They don't even clean up either. When I mow that area of the lawn, I see their mess. The loud meows are really annoying, especially to someone who doesn't think a meowing cat is cute. And why do they have to do it at night, when I'm trying to fall asleep? Some of us are actually productive members of society and do more in the daytime than lick ourselves and stretch. I need my rest. This is ridiculous. When I lived in Brooklyn, I expected a few things. This ain't Brooklyn though. I don't have any kids yet but I might want some in the future. I can't raise them around this stuff. Sigh... and this used to be such a good neighborhood too.

How about trying some of that animal scent liquid you can buy in hunting supply stores? Basically it's essence of urine. Maybe if you sprinkle that stuff around it will mark your yard as belonging to some big bear or wolf or something. Anybody else?

Anybody else just kind of shake your head when you watch certain older movies that you remember being pretty good? Rewatched Ladyhawke on the Netflix box tonight which I remembered as being a decent flick. Right away during the opening credits I knew I was in for a cheesefest. The opening musical score was some kind of synthesized keyboard, upbeat, 80's dance studio riff. It was more in line with an episode of Love Boat and completely inappropriate for the tone and setting of this medieval movie. Basically what follows is two hours of B-movie acting and a childish script. In spite of all that it was still ok to watch; just not all that I remembered it to be. What Ladyhawke needs is a good retooling by Ridley Scott. The 80's was my decade, but man were we lame!

You can get fox urine in the hunting section of any store that has a hunting section. It is mainly used by deer hunters in heavily pressured areas. The reason being is this; fox are known by other animals as being very sly and wary creatures. If a deer picks up the scent of a fox being nearby, it assumes that it is a safe place, so the deer will follow the scent and hang out by what he thinks is a fox. I have successfully been using this trick for many years the entire week after opening day of shotgun season here in MD.
Anyway, back on topic. By dampening a cotton ball with fox urine and dragging it around the perimeter of your yard, those pesky cats will be fooled into thinking that a fox is lurking somewhere very close. Problem solved, as cats like to eat, not be eaten...................

As far as movies go, I was and still am a child of the 1990s, having been born in 1982. One movie that is the ultimate 90s movie for me is Independence Day. I remember seeing it in theatres when I was 12 years old or so and thinking about how awesome it was. Then every time I watched it, the enjoyment level decreased by exactly 50%. Being inundated with it on superstation cable, it got to the point where I couldn't stand it, basically because it was just a video game in the form of a movie, which I suppose is the allure for 12 year olds. I stopped watching it for a few years and on a whim I decided to go see it at a midnight showing at a dollar theatre.
Best.
Movie.
Ever.
Okay, not the best movie ever, but sometimes you need a hiatus from something you grew up with to realize what it meant to you when you were first exposed to it. I felt like I was in the seventh grade all over again. It was pretty remarkable.
Now I have to find some more quintessential 90s movies to help take me back.

I'm a child of the seventies and there was no bottom to the cheesiness of movies in that era. Just try Phantom of the Paradise or Love Story: I guarantee you'll throw up half way through either of them. Still the era did produce some very fine movies. The Sting, Little Big Man and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest are three of my favourites. I suppose every decade is like that; we tend to get excited over the hyped thing, be it Independence Day or The Poseidon Adventure, but the quality stuff sticks long after the junk is forgotten.

I hear what you're saying about every decade producing cheese in film, but I think the 70's had a lot of decent hits. Mad Max, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Patton, A Bridge Too Far and lots of other good war flicks. I think the 60's and 70's produced more quality actors than the following 80's, 90's and 00's. Of course there are good actors in those decades too, but it seems to me the actual craft of acting changed. This probably occurred due to a shift in dialogue driven scripts to action, spec effects stuff like Shane was mentioning. And God help we children of the 80's but our decade seemed to be full of happy, happy, joy, joy fluff. Cinematic classics like Dirty Dancing, Footloose, and Teenwolf. That's my laymans guess anyway. I'm being a bit hard on my beloved 80's. There was some good stuff produced then too, but I think we went overboard on the cheese.
rolls, I love war movies of all kinds including Vietnam. A few I enjoy are Seige at Firebase Gloria, Flight of the Intruder, Dead Presidents (not entirely a war film), Uncommon Valor, Platoon Leader and of course Platoon to name a few.

Who, in the world of young actors, will fill in for Jack Nicholson?
What will we do when Clint Eastwood passes away?

Tommy Lee Jones, Gene Hackman, Donald Sutherland, James Garner, just to name a few.

I remember that. It was certainly a sight to see. In Boston, you don't really need a car (it's also really expensive if you want to park anywhere). I've got public transport and a bike, and while it isn't the fastest or most convenient way of getting places, it's a lot more affordable than owning a car here.

It all depends on the form in the string bikini. When I was in Mexico this summer I noticed many women in skimpy bikinis. There were two body types. One group had great beach bodies. The others bodies should have been covers in sack cloth.

yes it did; but, now to go to anything else:
Cooking shows - I love 'em. Especially the ones where either A) their cooking looks tasty and delicious (Emeril, Ms. Lucy); and B) THEY look tasty and delicious (Rachel Ray, Ms. Lucy):001_smile; but....
Two of my biggest peeves with all the cooking shows:
1) the chef gives a bite to the co-host, they chew on it for about 10 seconds with a straight face looking just ever so slightly to the side of the camera, then after enough time for a pit crew to change four tires, they look at the camera and go "Mmm, delicious!" It may just be me, but I usually know within the first second whether I think it's delicious or not, but that's me, I don't have the specialized taste buds to pick out the different herbs and spices in the food, so maybe it really takes them that long to decide if it all meshes well, but it just look rather fake, like no matter what they're eating, they have to make themselves smile and praise it.
2) the statement "Just a pinch of sugar brings out its natural sweetness".... how can you tell it isn't the SUGAR'S natural sweetness???? that one really gets me - common sense tells you, if you add sugar to it, OF COURSE it's gonna have some sweetness!!!
Is it just me? these aren't make or break issues, just wonderin' if anyone else has these thoughts

Good morning fellow sideshow freaks. In honor of the Anything thread hitting 10 pages I wanted to submit to you a nice booty shake gif. However I'm on the wifes' laptop and there's no way I was going to save anything booty related on it. That would be a good way for Shep to end up injured. So as you read this stand up and do a quick booty shake of your own in celebration.

Did anyone else notice that yet another election thread has popped up today? Already with the one upsmanship posting. It won't be long before that one flames out too. Politics? What are those? I'm pretty sure none of us here have the mental capacity to have an actual conversation about nothing, far less for an actual conversation about something we don't know. :tongue_sm (Gibberish, much?)
With regards to booty shaking, I propose we all go outside right now and yell 'Look at me!' and then proceed in the shaking. Unfortunately, I cannot right now as my girlfriend will probably walk out on me if I did that. The rest of you are all welcome to film your shaking and then upload it here. That would be great.
Also, good morning/good afternoon to you all. Hope you're having a great day. I have the day off today and I was running around taking care of errands all morning on my bike. I'm pretty sure there's a conspiracy and everyone has been notified to try and hit me.

It was fine, Shep. I actually hate most other bikers. When I'm on the road with my bike, I behave exactly like a car, i.e. I follow traffic signals and whatnot. I hate the bikers that pay no attention to the traffic laws and other cars. You can run them over. I'm guilty of wanting to do the same myself (I used to drive a lot when I lived in Florida - the bike riders there are awful. They ride in the middle of roads people drive 50 mph on. They're just asking to get hit).
Sorry if this offends anyone, but it's my opinion that if you ride a bike on the road, you obey the rules of the road. No exception. You stop for red lights and give right of way to whoever has it.
Also, feel free to run me off the road AFTER I help Shep pick out a straight.

ummm, actually, that's LAW...at least in Texas, anyway; person on bicycle has same rules as person in automobile - signal your turns, traffic lights and signs, correct side of the road, right of way, no deliberate running over of armadillos (just kidding)...you are another vehicle on the road

Sam has been in the computer business for 25 years and is finally sick of the stress. He quits his job and buys 50 acres of land in the middle of nowhere to be as far away from humanity as possible.
Sam sees the mailman once a week and gets groceries once a month. Otherwise, it’s total peace and quiet.
After 6 months or so of almost total isolation, he’s finishing dinner one day when someone knocks on his door. He opens it and there is a big, bearded man standing there. “Name’s Enoch… Your neighbor from four miles over the ridge… Having a party Saturday… Thought you’d like to come.”
“Great,” says Sam, “after 6 months of this I’m ready to meet some local folks. Thank you.”
As Enoch is leaving he stops, “Gotta warn you there’s gonna be some drinking.” “Not a problem… After 25 years in the computer business, I can drink with the best of ‘em.”
Again, as he starts to leave, Enoch stops. “More ‘n’ likely gonna be some fightin’ too.” Damn, Sam thinks… Tough crowd. “Well, I get along with people. I’ll be there. Thanks again.”
Once again Enoch turns from the door. “I’ve seen some wild sex at these parties, too.” “Now that’s not a problem,” says Sam, “Remember I’ve been alone for 6 months! I’ll definitely be there… By the way, what should I wear?”
Enoch stops in the door again and says, “Whatever you want, just gonna be the two of us.”

Definitely the rodents. I occasionally do whine about getting squeezed on rent, but my landlord is extremely responsive and quick when I call him over maintenance matters. So I'd say he's probably worth the premium. The custodian is really nice too. The exterminator can take up a 24-hour vigil in here for all I care, so long as it means I don't have to worry about mice anymore.

Hanna heads towards the N. Carolina, Virginia border and expected to hit sometime Saturday. Guess the fleet has gotten underway by now. Good luck to everyone that way. Next up, Ike. I remember the comedian Dennis Miller once did a bit joking what was the big deal about a 1/2 degree temp. rise in the oceans/waters. I guess we know the answer to that now. I do not wish to push us into a big global warming discussion; that's way too sophisticated for the Anything thread. However scientists are pretty uniform in their opinions now; that rising ocean temps. are helping create more #'s and intensity of storms. One good thing about AZ, we don't have much in the way of weather. At least not compared to other parts of the US. Anyway to all in their path, I hope these storms go easy on you.

Our good friend Dom has mentioned drinking Gin straight which I didn't find very pleasing with the Bombay. As for my history drinking whiskey it's generally been mixed drinks w/ whatever bar brand they're serving. I've now decided on a mission to try some of the more refined sipping whiskeys and liquors out there. The Jamesons was a bit harsh on ice but not bad. I've also got a mind to try Makers Mark, Biccardi has a classic rum of some sort and I'd like to try a nice congnac. I've had Chivas before and like that too. A friend told me about Johnnie Walker Blue label at $250 a bottle. That's out--I ain't payin that price for any liquor. What other smooth sipping choices are there out there? A friend told me about Johnnie Walker Blue label at $250 a bottle. That's out--I ain't payin that price for any liquor. What other smooth sipping choices are there out there? Keep the price under 40 or 50 lets say.
I do not drink the alcohol Shep but I hear wonders about the Night Train!!!

Nothing wrong with Maker's, but if you're looking for something readily accessible to sip, I'll recommend Woodford Reserve. I like Knob Creek, as well, as I think the flavor is better, but Woodford has a bit less bite. YMMV. You may also want to check out the "spirit of the month" in the speakeasy, as well. I attempted to pick up a bottle today, but it looks as though I'll have to travel a bit further afield than the local liquor store to find it.
Rolls, enjoy that wii. Many is the morning I've woken to unexplained soreness, only to realize that my wife beat me in wii tennis again. Our favorite games include Mario Galaxy, the lego Indiana Jones game, and a newer one called boom blox (lots of throwing in that one!).

yep, been trying to post a reply for about 20 minutes...thought it was my stinkin' DSL again (no, not the Linux distro), since it was going wonky during while the remnants of Gustav rained on my parade, but then I had the thought to use one of my tabs for something other than B&B....found out the web is still on!
as for Wii - Wii Sports and the Lego games, Star Wars and Indiana Jones, are absolutely awesome! Still can't drive the new Mario Cart worth a flip yet, though
I usually ended up sore from bowling, myself :001_smile

I don't know whether or not I can recommend it yet seeing as I have not gotten it, but I am going to order some Tito's Handmade Vodka. I've heard nothing but glowing reviews about it from friends and publications. Plus they have a pretty cool website to boot: http://www.titos-vodka.com

Are you a fan of scotch? If the answer is "I'm not sure," or I suppose even if it's "Yes," you may want to look into a bottle of The Glennlivet 12. About this time last year, the fine gents here got my curiosity piqued enough to give the bottle of Glenfiddich that I had laying around another chance. Lo and behold, I discovered that I like scotch. The Glennlivet 12 seems to be the Merkur HD of scotch. Great for the noob and appreciated by the aficionado.

That's an interesting thread. You're the 2nd one to tell me about it. Funny, I've always thought Wild Turkey was one of the cheaper rot gut brands. Don't know why I had that impression. Did it have a bad rep. for a time? I think I'll look for this. Thanks.

Vodka has always seemed kind of harsh to me Shane. One of those that burns your nose after taking a swallow. Of course the thing about all liquor is the cheaper stuff usually has some bad side effects whereas the expensive premium brands don't. Unfortunately the premium liquor comes w/ the premium price tag.

Scotch is another one that has left me flat in the past. Although as mentioned I've downed the odd shot of Chivas on occassion and enjoyed it. I of course have heard about Glennlivet and fiddich but have never tried them. Perhaps they should go on the list as well.
The thing about a lot of the harder liquors is they go down so harsh. By that I mean they burn the taste buds, tongue and throat and then the stomach. Sometimes to the point of giving me heartburn and that's no fun. I'd really like to find a brand or two that go down smooth without all that burn. On the other hand I don't really want something too sweet either. I've had Southern Comfort and that stuff gags me (could also be psychological as my first blow out, drop dead, stinking drunk hangover came as a result of SC). So I'm looking for something that is easy on the taste glands, warms (not burns) the belly, isn't candy-like and tastes fine. That's not too much to ask is it?

I am prob. going to mess up the name: My Chelle??? Something like that. It smells very nice in the bottle; kind of flowery. However once applied (they had a tester bottle for those that got mad at me in my L. Vegetal thread) it immediately faded. My wife said she could detect a faint odor, but not much. At $20 it's a lot to pay for something that fades this quickly. That's about it. Spent around $25 and picked up three nice new products.
I got some My Chelle samples a few months back from a local health food store. wow, it was back in the winter now that I think about it. They had weird names. One was a balm kind of thing that I liked, smelled kinda hippy-ish (Patchoulli?).. There was another one that was a splash which I thought was just nasty. One of a sort of liquid soap/shaving medium (so it said) that was just, not effective AT ALL. Doubt I would buy any of their products.

Hey Shep,
In regards to the liquor setting you ablaze...how do you drink it? I had the same flamethrower/heartburn issues until I gleaned some invaluable advice from our very own TimmyBoston.
The key is to just bring the spirit up to your lips. Don't drink it at first. Just get a feel for its aroma and taste from the tiny amount on your lips. Pouring a small amount in the glass will help facilitate this. After a time, start taking tiny sips. Before you know it, you'll be sipping with the best of them! (Not me, though...my liquor cabinet and budget went dry a long time ago.)

Good morning and happy Saturday. It will be a long one for me. Out the door at 7a and prob. won't get back home until 7p. Not to start the day off on a negative note (well alright I am but, I'm over it now); isn't it great when you're driving down an empty two lane road and then come up on two cars driving side by side about 3 mph under the speed limit. The old slow speed race. It's especially neat when you see one of the vehicles hurry up to get along side the other and then pace. Very courteous to block all traffic behind you, thank you very much. Grrrrr.
Cory, to say I have a style of drinking is to assume I drink which I really do not. Probably twice a year. I just thought I might try an occassional sipping liquor a little more often and see how I like it. I hear you about the budget. Mine doesn't allow for a cabinet full of private stock either. I can only afford to have a few on hand which is why I'm looking for advice before I make a purchase. When I do partake, I would have to say I sip small mouthfuls but more than the lip wetting you suggest. Perhaps I will give that a try. Also letting some ice melt usually helps cut down the harsh flavors. The real issue is I will buy a few of these brands to try and then they'll sit for years before finished. I have a bottle of Crown Royal that's got to be three or four years old and only half gone. I don't know if I'll ever finish that Bombay Gin.
Well what else? Any good Anything topics to get us through the day? Toss out a few and let's see what sticks.

Woke up early by a phonecall from my wife. Early being 730 on Saturdays. Had to drive downtown and pick her up at her hotel (she was at a conference for work - not running away quite yet) because she's fallen ill. I think 'ill' means badly hung over, but she says it's just a stomach bug. Ran back home and threw some clothes on. Went to Starbucks (ick) for two huge containers of coffee. Busted up a sales meeting and gave a pep talk. Now I'm in my office typing here and finishing some paper work. Might stop by the tea store on the way home and pick up a new blend for some iced tea. Gotta cook a porterhouse that I have at home. That will be lunch. The rest of the day will be... relaxing. Watching movies. Niners game tomorrow.
Maybe I will play with my Wii as well.

Oh, did I tell you who I saw there after I bought a ($5.00) smoothie?Blah, blah, blah..."

Yeah, having a budget and generally being forced to live w/in our means just isn't fair. If they didn't want us to spend money they shouldn't have invented all these damn cool toys. My father who is in his 60's now and who made a good amount of money in his life, was visiting a few weeks ago. I was bitching about how I'd made some boneheaded financial decisions and was now paying for them. He said to me: "Son, don't spend your time regretting it. Do you have nice toys? Do you enjoy them? Can you still survive and provide for your family? Do you have enough for retirement? You can't take any of it with you so enjoy it while you're here and don't feel guilty. You earned it, spend it." He also went on to say that while mom bitched about all the money he'd spent over the years, he never once heard her complain about the toys or vacations either.. Ahhh, my dad. God love him. He put it in perspective for me.

Now here's an interesting topic for the next day or two. I read on CNN where David Duchovny of X-files fame has checked himself into rehab...for being a sex addict. :001_huh:. We'll observe a brief pause for all the jokes...
...finished? Ok. Here's (http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/09/05/sex.addiction/index.html) the link. I went on to puruse the reader comments and it seems an even split between those that believe sex addiction is real and those that think it's bunk. As defined in the article sex addiction behavior includes pornography, masterbation, extra marital affairs, seeking prostitutes. Those are the big 4 if I remember. It also seems the American Psychiatric Assoc. does not recognize it as a true addiction disorder either as it's difficult to establish a baseline of what is normal sexual behavior.
Honestly I'm perplexed and don't know where I fall on this issue. I can see both sides of this argument. On the one hand what is normal? Humans, like all animals are prewired for sex so how much is too much? OTOH I can see where porn or hookers could become an obsession and anger a spouse. In that case it would definitely be a problem. But is it an addiction? Hmmmm. Thoughts?

Funny thing is most of the folks trying to bring Cuban cigars back from Mexico got played for the stupid tourist and in reality have a knock off brand. The looks on their faces are priceless when they leave. They don't know whether to be happy nothing got confiscated or pissed at the reason nothing got confiscated.
Guess no one's interested in sex addiction today. Thought that would be a winner <shrug>. So we'll move on to another piece of fluff. MSNBC has a whole layout of athlete and celeb romances. #1 on the list: Derek Jeeter who's been with no less than 12 starlets. Quite an impressive list to boot. Jessica Alba, Scarlet Johanssen, Jessica Biel to name a few. He loses points for Mariah Carey though. I think she's a nutjob and completely unappealing. Also if you've ever wondered what becomes of former Playboy playmates, it seems they marry football players, racecar drivers or any other athlete they can get their hands on. The moderators should not have to continually lock threads that get spun out of control by the usual suspects, and the founders of this forum did not start this place, which is FREE of charge for membership, for them to tarnish it through childish name-calling. Good morning and happy Sunday fellow Anything'ers. Welcome back to Dom who was MIA from our discussions yesterday. I bet he had something to say about sex addiction .
This mornings first musing. Have you noticed all the shows on Discovery Channel that project the Earth thousands or millions of years in the future are devoid of human life? I think I've watched four or five of these "what if" or "how will it look" shows and homo sapien is always missing. Watched another one last night. When I think of the future, it's of deep space stations, worm hole travel, warp drives, shiny silver suits and zero gravity hanky panky. Yet Discovery channel portrays all kinds of weird dinosaur-like creatures roaming a swampy, vegetation filled planet. Do you think they know something we don't?

Probably they think we will run out of razor blades and die off in droves from the AD's. Just a guess.

Morning, Shep, fellow B&Bers!
It's a shame I missed the sex addiction talk. I have one too many stories about that. Guess I'll have to save those for another time...
I've seen some of the shows you've described, Shep. Personally, I think it's extremely difficult to postulate what the future will be like. I think there are a few threads of belief that alter the way people view the future. Malthusian theories would show humanity going beyond their means for sustaining a stable society. We all know that the human population is rising. This is a fact.
The diverging theories are created out of contrasting responses to this dilemma. Some theorists may be optimistic that humans will figure out a way to provide for themselves in new ways. We are running out of fuels, water, food, etc. Contrary to this, it could be said that we are short on these resources and will not be able to find a solution or evolve/adapt to our new surroundings quickly enough in order to guarantee survival.
I think a lot of the shows we see are a little bit overdramatic, but serve a good purpose. They serve to make us aware that things need to change if we want our species to remain inhabitants of earth.
So who knows what the future will bring?

I wonder myself if at some point there will be a big die off. Like a pond that gets to many fish in it. Oxygen drops and most die. What is left have enough to survive.
I imagine that at some point something of that effect happens. We would have to revert back to other ways of life that are more substainable.
Probably not as much mechinized society as back to basic survival. Each to his/her own survival.
But maybe I watched Mad Max to many times.

I've seen similar shows. I think most believe we're headed for a fate similar to the dinosaurs. Hard to say if we really are. Equally hard to say we aren't.
Off to the Niners game. This should be interesting.

I don't know gents. When I think of the technological advances promulgated by our species and what we are capable of achieving, I just find it hard to believe we will fade into oblivion. My dad once posited to me that maybe we are the seeds who will one day populate other worlds. Rather than ET coming to us, perhaps we are ET going there. New optics and imaging technology has already discovered something like 10 or 20 Earth-like planets out there. Plus from what I've seen, there is a very real possibility that Mars could be terra formed to sustain human life. Of course all this is in the distant future and we may well suffer one or more catastrophic events during the interim.
I'm always reminded of the biological imperative known as the Carrying Capacity. Basically any patch of real estate can only sustain so much life. As humans we have been able to alter and extend that capacity, but there must be limits. Might we someday experience a heavy die-off through war or disease? I believe it could happen, but in nature thinning usually occurs for the overall health of a species. In all the Earths' history nothing has existed like we humans. We are something totally different and unique, and I believe destined for more than mere subsistence or extinction. I probably sound like some wide eyed fool, but I'm not. I do recognize all our faults and problems and what a mess we can make of things. In the end however I do have faith in our ability to overcome and succeed.
Or perhaps this is all far too deep a discussion for a lazy weekend morning .

It does seem that no matter how bad we mess it up, we do tend to survive. I agree with a lot of what you say there. Mostly I think that at some point in the future there will have to be a die off of some kind, somewhere.

Man as a species has only been around for a short time relative to all other creatures that graced the earth. We've changed our surroundings to an extreme extent in this short period of time. While no other creature before was as intelligent (to our knowledge) as us nor as resourceful, I'm slightly pessimistic with regards to the length of time humans will be on the earth. There's still a lot of time for us to mess up.
Sorry for the depressing note. Er... happy Sunday, everyone!

I think it may be a problem that we are too technically advanced. Suppose we have a major war or even just a major financial depression. When our systems start to fail, most people will have no idea how to live without the services.
For example, consider widespread failure of our power and water systems. Even if the populace were to remain orderly, most people would have little notion of how to survive. However, I doubt that the people would remain orderly. Everyone would be out to take what others have,
Read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Then try to be optimistic about our long-term future.

Haha. It's not that simple, Shep. I do think we have to do things now to guarantee our future. I just think that a lot of the time, the precautions that need to be taken are not fulfilled, which will end up causing more problems in the future that will need to be fixed more urgently. By pushing aside problems now, and creating temporary solutions, we're only passing on our burden to following generations that have to deal with it in some way. I think we need to work on fixing what needs to be fixed now, instead of putting it off.
But there is something to be said for living life in the moment. My girlfriend tells me that all the time. I quote: "enjoy the ride". Just so everyone knows, she's always right. :001_tt1::a53:

There are certainly different scenarios that could play themselves out based on as yet unknown factors and forces. I would never be so bold as to make a prediction what will become of us. I do know a few things though. Apocalyptic movies and books sell because they are morbidly intriguing, spooky and in their way appealing to us as we enjoy a good campfire ghost story. End of Days soothsayers have been around for millennia. When the Persians overran the Greeks, when Rome was burning, when poison gas was unleashed in WW1, when Hitler and Stalin killed millions all the way up to 9/11 and Katrina there were those proclaiming it the end. Yet we always come through the other side.
In a world filled with infinite possibilities and outcomes it's impossible for us to hazzard a guess. I will say this though. If you knew for certain it would all come to an end in five years, do you want to spend your remaining time hoarding food and water, stockpiling guns and ammo (to do what with them exactly?), digging an underground bunker to hole away in? To what end? What will you be surviving to accomplish? If that's what the world comes to then the dead are by far and away the luckier. I'm not suggesting one not be prepared, but I would not want to live in paranoia, fear and mistrust my last days. I know how that sounds; like so much happy, crappy fluff, but if I'm going out I'd rather do it with some dignity and honor.
Personally I don't believe it will come to that anyway so it's all speculation. I do agree without electricity, electronics and plumbing things would be mighty uncomfortable. Let's hope that big bang sunburst never happens. And with that I bid you all a good Sunday. I'm out the door to play.

We got a little philosophical and deep over the weekend so back to the lighter side.
I rewatched Charlie Wilson's War last night. That is just a flat out enjoyable movie and the true story of Congressman Wilson is just as good. Is there nothing Tom Hanks can't do? I'll admit the DaVinci Code was pretty slow, but it raked in a ton of cash. Castaway could have flopped in somebody elses hands, but he made it work. Band of Brothers is flat out the best war series ever made, ever. Now I'm told he has another WW2 series coming about Marines in the Pacific campaign. That should be excellent too. I think Hanks just might be my favorite actor, and he may also be one of a few left in a dying breed...actors who can act. I'll give props to Philip Seymour Hoffman though (costarred in Charlie Wilson's War); he is one decent actor himself. Good job on that one Canada.
Conversely is there no saving Kevin Costner? His stuff just blows now. Remember No Way Out, Revenge and Bull Durham? Pretty decent stuff early in his career but he's become just another hack the past 15 years or so. Plus now, I don't think anyone in the industry takes him seriously so he doesn't get offered the "good" roles.
These are my thoughts anyway.

I liked DaVinci Code. The best thing in Charlie Wilson's war was coach Wade Phillips daughter playing the belly dancer. If you are not familiar with her watch My Chemical Romance's video "Helena" on the tube. She is the girl in the coffin. Oh heck, here it is. She appears right around 2 minute mark. And if anyone can get one of those umbrellas at the end of the video I will pay and be thankful.

:biggrin1:
naw, it's a legit game
it may be better to Google it - then you can at least tell people you Googled your Farkle
anywho, it may also go by the name 10,000, it's a dice game. using either 5 or 6 dice, you roll to get points, usually 10,000, but the final score can be decided before you play. there are all kinds of variants, and to my knowledge, no "official" rules, but here is a quick run down, as best as I can 'splain it:
1's = 100 points
5's = 50 points
3 of a kind = number showing X 100 (eg. 3 4's = 400 points)
- excetption = 3 1's = 1000
straight = 1500
there are variants, like 4 of a kind = number X 200, etc.
so, you start off by rolling all the dice, and look what you have. determine what scores you may have showing.
- example - 1 5 3 3 3 4 = 450 points, with a 4 leftover
then what you do is decide whether you want to keep the score, or roll the non-scoring dice to increase your score. Usually, you set a minimum 1st score, usually 350 points. So if this was your first roll, you'd probably keep it. BUT, the advantage, if you manage to roll a 1 or 5 in our previous example, not only to you add more points to the total, you also get a bonus 1000 for using all six dice, and you get to keep going! The second time you go through all six dice, it's 2000, doubles each time.
However, if you risk rolling again and don't score, you lose all the points from that turn.
forgot to mention that for 3 of kinds, they have to be rolled in the same roll.
there's another rule I like to implement, if you roll a no score as the first roll of your turn, you lose 1000 points.
it's really complicated to learn the rules at first, but once you have it down, it's a blast. since everyone rolls the same six dice, there's theoretically no limit to number of players.
go ahead and google it, you'll likely find the rules in a format better than I can explain it, but I'd encourage you to give it a try
warning: it is addictive!
Edit: steer horns, beer and nudity optional :biggrin1:

I'm on a real kick with English composers lately, namely the works of Ralph Vaughan Williams.
I'm not huge on recent English composers (other than Britten). England had a really good run in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, though. Dunstaple, Taverner, Tallis, Byrd (AMAZING), John Dowland (you must listen to 'Flow My Tears'), Dunhill, Morley, Purcell, and Handel (German-born English composer) are all great. So those are some suggestions. Other than Vaughan Williams, who else are you listening to?

That must have been a great experience, even without the force of an orchestra. Do you know the composer or the orchestra that plays in your recording? My favorite recording is the one by Karl Bohm. It isn't the clearest recording, but the interpretation is top notch.
I'm a big fan of Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas stuff, though it's been overplayed by now. Any other favorite artists for holiday-related music?
A number of composers actually wrote music specifically for Christmas. Other than the obvious Greensleeves, there's Bach. Bach wrote a Christmas Oratorio and a HUGE number of cantatas - many of which can be used successfully around Christmas time (Christ Lag in Todesbanden, In Dulci Jubilo). I really like Bach's music.
Then there's Corelli's Christmas Concerto, Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, and a number of ballets by Tchaikovsky (Swan Lake, the Nutcracker, etc.). Ralph Vaughan Williams also wrote a set of carols. I can't think of anything else right now, but there's definitely a lot more.
