Nonsense. Bring the good stuff now! I'll begin...

The three of us all teach for a living. Got a favorite story or moment when you knew it was all worthwhile? For me, it's a huge pleasure to hear from a student several years later. This happened last summer, when a student who took one of my intro courses wrote me out of the blue to thank me for the outlook on life the course gave him. Definitely made my month.

Last Spring I took a team to the state level Science Olympiad competition. One of the speakers at the award ceremony was a college student that had dedicated countless hours to help organize the competition. They finish telling about how he has worked so hard and has finished his bachelors a year early yada yada yada... finally, he steps up the podium... and it was a former student! He then happens to tell stories about when he was middle school kid in science olympiad and all the crazy things his coach would say or make them do and how it all makes sense now as being important....

I check during the day now more than when I was working. I could just never bring myself to waste that much time at work when I was working. I also would have been talked to about it and possibly even fired if I spent as much work time as some fellows do on here.

I too, have an academic team (Current Issues and Events) and one of my senior students today informed me that he and his fellow members feared me as though I was the devil incarnate their freshmen year, then their sophomore year they still feared me. Their junior year they didn't fear me as much, but believed I was surely crazy. Now, as Seniors, they say it is their sworn duty to drive me off the edge and leave any doubt behind that I'm crazy. But then I gave him 'that look', and promptly added that they still belief I am the scariest person they've ever met.

I'll drink some bourbon to inspire your warmth this evening. Of course, the telekinetic properties of bourbon are as of yet untested, so I may enjoy the effect a bit more than you do. Still, it's the thought that counts, right?

Just got back from a round of squirrel hunting. It was too easy. The trees were full of the little bastards just asking to go into the pan. Waited too late in the evening though, as I was finishing cleaning the last one, the sun set on me. Very hard to cut up the little fuzzies with no light. It's not as bad as shaving in the dark, though. That would really be scary.

Cleaning a nice big fox squirrel is too easy. Down here in Southern Georgia we only have an over abundence of tree rats - too small to eat but big enough to f%^k up your garden.

My pellet rifle shoots true - tree rats fear me.

Eh, not much of a recipe, but I'll give you the idea:

Heat up veggie oil in pan with a pat of butter and a pinch of minced garlic.

In a mixing bowl, add salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar to your flour. Roll and flip the meat in the bowl until well covered, lay in the hot pan. Fry and enjoy!

Not anything like that. It's an 80 shot service-rifle match shot 200, 300 and 600 yards, iron sights and a sling (my avatar). The iron man is more a reference to who the match is named after - a good friend and my shooting coach. He still holds one long range national title at Camp Perry. One of his sons, and good friend of mine also, is the only junior to ever win the President's Rifle Match at Perry (2004), and the third civilian. He now shoots on the army reserve team.

The other reference to ironman is unlike a regular match there are no sighter shots, no alibis, no excuses and no whining allowed.

Ok, no one has posted here in 2 and a half hours. This scares me. The TAT is quiet, too quiet. Like a scary movie, just before the monster jumps out.

Boo!

Mostly Mrs Soapbox and I have settled into the basement, with a fireplace, some Ella Fitzgerald Christmas music playing, and she works on her dissertation while I try to debug and add a few more functional bits to this program. Little H is upstairs and knocked out, with nary a cough on the baby monitor to be heard.

As Gruder noted, DC people freak out when ten flakes hit the ground. It's damn near as bad as Georgia. So we holed up last night, and tonight too just for good measure.

Evening all.

The Mrs here is watching "Desperate Housewives", I'm grading some online History 1301 assignments (BORING), and our little one is in the bed probably snoozing by now, but I dare not look in or sure enough, he'll be awake.

Ugh, no quiet relaxing fireside chats for you. Good luck, sir. You're going to need it. A few weeks ago, I got a report that my son was kicking and pushing the same little boy in class... FOUR TIMES. Had to be sent to the office. He was pushing his little friend. And he's three, the little monster. And to think, I'm getting him his own razor and shaving set for Christmas.

Etoyoc_Rebmos
12-08-2008, 02:45 PM
Well part of the issue is she is refusing to do the worksheets for the field trip that she wasn't allowed to go to with the rest of her class. (The setting of the field trip would have set her off - sending her would have been setting her up for failure). They aren't hard worksheets, and if she asks nice, I would be glad to give her some astronomy assistance. The other packet of worksheets is sentence writing which always sets her off.

At the moment, I am just ignoring her. That works much better than trying to help her when she doesn't want it or to be confrontational with her.

Sure did. I posted, but that might have been just before your B&B sabbatical  Nothing from TSD though. You sent the TGQ Autumn sample and a some of the lavender, plus samples of two of your son's soaps and a vial of Blenheim Bouquet (which pushed me over the edge on that one -- there's now a bottle headed my way from Luxembourg). I've pressed one of your son's soaps (the whiter of the two) into a container and plan to try it tomorrow.

I may stop at Tamarack on the way home from holiday travels to look into that. FWIW, I've always thought that Colleen would do better with her samples if she were to create sample pucks that were thinner and bigger around (like the Ogallala sample pucks). That small difference in size makes a huge difference in lathering ability, at least to me. Nothing a microwave can't fix, but that's not something that most folks would try. I remember getting pretty frustrated with her stuff when I first started wetshaving because I couldn't get good lather from the sample pucks. Go figure. If you touch base with Colleen again soon, feel free to pass that along. I'd hate to see her lose customers over it -- the soap is too good!

Broke out the Milord this morning. Forgot how thin the handles were on those. I got used to the feel of Fatboys, HDs, Aristocrats, Super Adjs... that the Milord felt way too thin. It shaved well for all of that though.

I tend to favor larger-handled/heftier razors, as well, the exception being the slant -- I get a better shave from my thin-handled slant than from the HD version. Go figure.

This morning, I'm going with the finest stuff in my collection: Uncle Albert's Solid Cream Shaving Cake Captain's Galley Scent.

I trust your nose, but something about "Captain's Galley" doesn't sound appealing to me...

Chad, I have found that the best way to lather her sample pucks is by dipping the puck in hot water and holding it in the palm of your hand. Load your brush directly like that.

Yeah, I melt the stuff (short bursts in the microwave) into a 3" plastic base for a flower pot ($.48 at my local Wal-Mart!). That provides enough surface area for a good lather. Palm of the hand would work well, too. My only point is that many folks trying Colleen's samples are new wetshavers themselves, sampling lots of different stuff. Those folks may dismiss TGQ as a poor performer if they don't get good lather from their samples. At least, that's what happened to me when I first started wetshaving and ordered some TGQ sample pucks.

Silly me for not looking in the photo forum for this (name changed, again) thread. :001_rolle

Hang in there with the hustley-bustley Jim. I figured you were just licking your woulds after the game this weekend. My condolences, by the way. (Could be worse -- 'Bama could be going to the Liberty Bowl! I used to live in Memphis -- no one goes to the Liberty Bowl!).

:lol::lol::lol:

as far as the game, I was already prepared for it...I called to check on the score (couldn't wait to watch the tape), it was 3 minutes left in the 3rd, score tied...my first thoughts were "Crap! They're still in it!" and "Crap, 4th qtr coming up, they really need a 2 TD lead, they still don't have the depth to keep it up in the 4th"
I was right.
but that will change, as soon as next year probably
I've said it all along, save for that major fluke vs. Ole Miss (not taking anything away, they've a good team, but a huge jackass for a coach), Florida would be #1, all Ole Miss did was wake a sleeping giant...yeah, I'd rather see 'Bama in the championship, but being it's vs. Oklahoma, I think I'd rather see Florida put the ass-whooping on them. Bama could beat 'em, stout defense, but I'm really looking forward to them over-hyped and out of place weenies get shown what football is (again....Texas already did that but got screwed in the system)

Morning all.

Rolls -- I used your son's soap this morning (the round white one, not the one that was sliced from a shave stick). I really appreciate you sending it along -- it's excellent stuff. I soaked it for a few minutes, and it rewarded me with copious, wonderfully slick lather requiring very little effort to create (shavemac 23mm in finest). It's a forgiving soap, by which I mean it will accept a decent variety of water amounts and still retain its slickness. I think it prefers less water than many soaps, though, which I like. I discerned no scent, which is fine, and likely preferable to folks such as yourself who've been having sensitivity issues. The three-pass shave was great -- the lather didn't dry out at all during the shave. All told, an excellent soap. Better lather than any of the glycerin soaps I've tried (which makes sense given that it's not glycerin-based), better lether overall than C&E, and more user friendly than some of the higher end stuff such as AOS. Again, thanks, and please convey my thanks to your son, as well.

Hey.... A new idea for a Wii game.... And it will be useful to reach out to the next generation of shavers...

Wii shaving. They can make a silicone sleeve to go over the nunchunk that has a brush at the end and the Wii remote could have a DE/Straight attachment. Then they have to lather, shave, strop, etc...

As they advance, they unlock the ability/ingredients to mix their own shaving soap. Which they can then sell to get money for better shaving supplies.

The Miis will then not only be able to have facial hair, but varying degrees of stubble, toilet paper, and bandaids as well

Happy Friday, TATers.

Well, it's after 1600, how'd the interview go?

Hard to get a read, quite frankly. They were interviewing 15 folks for two positions, so the whole thing had kind of a factory feel. I was hoping they'd narrowed things down a bit more than that by now. Still, I feel as though I held my own. Six questions about my progress, research, teaching abilities/philosophy, ending with the good ol' "what questions do you have for us?"

Thanks for asking, and thanks to all of you for the well-wishes. I'm humbled to be supported by such a caring group of gentlemen.

Now, here's the kicker. 8 minutes before the interview was scheduled to begin, the phone rings. No big deal, I thought, they're just calling a bit early. probably some fancy interview trick someone's keen on... Nope. It's another university, calling to tell me that I'm one of two finalists for their position. They'll be flying me out to do the campus interview/teaching presentation thing at the end of January. May have slightly affected my concentration on the interview at hand

Taking a cue from Richie's activities last evening, I shall now locate my bourbon. Seriously guys, thanks.

Well, I'm back. We didn't ride the train after all. All the tickets were sold. :mad3: I did see a few razors, but other than the Gillette Milord, I wasn't interested in anything. I did see a couple of Old Spice mugs, but they wanted 12 dollars for them. I only went into two stores, though. The Distraction Texas Shaving Club will have to make a special trip sometime soon.

yes indeedy...one more week before christmas break, surely we can plan a day in there somewhere, however I will say that all my saturdays are booked until next year :tongue_sm

and, any of those other fine folks that can reach Jefferson should be invited as well...:001_smile

I see. The whole of B&B seems a little quieter than usual, too.

Are you off the full two weeks? If so, we can pick any day. Even a Sunday afternoon/evening would be ok with me.

So who will have the 7000th post and will it be special?

As special as special can be. I could put a quick 40 posts of fluff elsewhere and hit 7000 her with 1K for me. Jeez if only I thought of that hours ago!

yep, I'll have to look at a calendar later tonight and see what days are available for me, and you and Micah do the same, then we'll make a Venn diagram of our days off and plan then
