I had nine brothers and sisters. Only my youngest sister is still alive.

You sound like you grew up around the time when my grandparents did. My grandpa had 8 brothers and sisters and when he was a baby they kept him in a dresser drawer at night (open of course) because there was nowhere else to put him.

My coworker is talking about having to put one of his dogs down. That sucks. I had to put down one of ours a few years ago. That's the first time as an adult man that I had to do something like that. Let me tell you it's not fun. I was choking and blubbering like a little baby. Those darn pets worm their way into your heart. Not to mention the memories of your kids associated w/ the pet. When you put the pet down it's like putting down a part of your past. What a complete and utter downer.

I hear that. My grandfathers were born in 1913 and 1917 (both still alive and kicking) and I can see why they would say I/we/the USA have gone soft. They are lions. I have it easy. I shouldn't bitch about meaningless things, either.

Perhaps the best we can hope to do is to build upon their successes, learn from their mistakes, and work as hard as they did.

I haven't had to do that yet. My wife and I have a black lab that we have had for 10 years. This year will the first year I can't take him hunting. Last year I shouldn't, he would stay sore and achey for a couple of days. Not being able to hunt him has and will continue to break my heart. When we have to do the inevitable I will be histerical and my wife will be worse.

What is the inspiration in naming a fish pants?

That was my next question.................

gatto
11-25-2008, 12:36 PM
Well I was having a bad day and fighting with my mom so my boyfriend and I decided to walk to the diner, which is in a shopping center with a petco, well we walked in to look at the cats and I ended up getting pants. He was a blue betta fish. I didn't really have a name for him and my boyfriend jokingly suggested naming him underwear, I don't know why he said that but anyway he ended up being named pants, I later bought him a friend name socks. I guess I thought he might not live too long so I took the idea of naming him pretty lightly. He lived for 2 and a half years, he actually got sick and almost died a few times but after about $50 in fish meds I got him back both times.

I thought it wouldn't be too weird because the spartans all have normal names. They were normal kids who got abducted by the government because they had near perfect genes. I guess that could kind of mess a kid up if they found out they were named after a fictional genetically and structurally altered soldier from the future who fights aliens and is incapable of reproduction.

Is that the total size or how much is being used right now? on my HP there was a little tiny partition special for the backup software. I wear contacts -- it took me a week or two to get used to them, but they seem like no big deal now. I do occasionally have trouble with allergies/eye irritation, but that seems to subside if I go back to glasses for a couple of days.

Congrats on 1k!

And speaking of PIFs, I received a quite generous package today that contained more than the Autumn soap sample I won for guessing Rolls' age. Rolls, when you get back, I'd love to know more about these homemade soaps. Sincerely, thanks. This'll be fun to work my way through.

That sucks, Shep -- sorry to hear it. I'm guessing a lot of companies are reducing bonuses this year, whether or not they have employees with the guts to speak their minds! I have a similar intolerance for general stupidity (which is part of the reason I prefer to stay in academia, I think.)

Thanks for the thoughts. The economy doesn't have anything to do with it. The yearly bonus only started about 5 years ago, and I've collected the max or near the max every year. Last year there was a big management shake up and some promotions. Non of which were for the good. I'm one of the top producers in the category that counts the most: getting law breakers off the streets. Everything else is just bullshit. I sleep well at night and frankly they can take their bonus and sit on it. There's no way I'm gonna play the kissy, kissy, suck up game for a few extra bucks a year. I played my cards and now I'll live with the consequences. Just needed a quick venting here, and now I'm at peace with it. :thumbup1:

Nope. I am going to mix up a coffee can of ammonium nitrate, diesel fuel, and sulfuric acid. And then I am going to blow this F$@^#% thing into a billion pieces!!!

Nice! I'm reminded of one summer day when two of my buddies and I were playing around with a can of bug spray and a bonfire on a small, wooded island in a lake behind one of the guys' house. The island and my eyebrows didn't fare too well, but that story is pretty long and will have to wait for another day. Ask and ye shall receive, though. If anyone wants, it'd be my pleasure to regale you all with the whole sordid ordeal.:biggrin:

It was a 3 hour lecture, if I have less then 2 sentences of useful notes that I could have gotten reading the book in the first half then I very seriously doubt the other hour and a half would be better. I managed to sit through the first half but my head just felt too foggy and I couldn't focus at all (not that he was saying much).

I have been very fortunate to have some excellent professors. I hate missing class. Everyday I am amazed at how much new information I can pack into this old(er) brain of mine.

Pretty good pay and benefits. Rewarding work. Lots of govt. bureaucracy to deal with. A-holes and unqualified's being promoted. You take the good with the bad.

Sounds like your typical government job. I sometimes fear that with going into teaching.

The college I attended required the prof's to have reviews. As students we were asked to fill out a survey, not required but asked, on each prof sometime during the school year.

I thought that (course/prof end of course student survey) was standard for most schools. I can't recall the last time I did a workshop or took a course where that wasn't done.

And it is so fun when you are the presenter and you get the feedback from those and wonder WTF... were these people even in the same room with my class/workshop? Some of the things that get on those surveys make them worthless... at least at any of the "professional" workshops I have been part of...

My wife got a bread maker at a yard sale a few weeks back...I posted about this. Anyway I've been a bread makin' fool. Even the box mix stuff at the supermarket bake up pretty good. Frys grocery has a sourdough that rocks. I think that's what we'll have instead of dinner rolls on Thursday. Hot bread right out of the maker is the best. One word of warning though. You need to eat the bread within a day or two or it gets hard and stale. It doesn't last like mass market bread.

That is because it isn't full of garbage  we use to have a bread maker, that was the best. If you like banana bread try making some, it comes out way better then anything you can get at a store.

Use it to make bread crumbs then.
Also the reason it does not last as long is it has no preservatives.

As you mention it soaks up water nicely allowing me to decide how much or little to leave in it. It is soft to the touch yet just mildly scratchy enough at the tips to exfoliate. It's firm enough to hold it's form while whipping and lathering, but not so stiff you can't mash it out when need be. It blooms out nicely to achieve a face full of lather. The price is right. I love the Rooney and have no desire for any other.

Great picture. I used to keep a number of Lovebirds years ago. I've even had about 5 trained birds that were acclimatized to people, would sit on your shoulder, and do tricks, etc.

Morning all. I can't stand it when I get up and it is dark and I go to home from work and it is dark.

I hate that it's dark by 4 PM. It's still daytime, but it feels like you should be inside getting ready for bed at 6. I can't wait until the winter solstice.

I agree about the catalogs, I got at least 7 in the mail yesterday. I've been drinking tea all morning, maybe I'll grab a snack in a little while. Luckily this is a slow day at work, mostly reading documents. The only downside is there in construction going on in the IT room so it's loud in here. I think I will give health services a call and see if there is anything going around. My class yesterday only had about half of the usual people in it. Although it was nice out last night, that could have make everybody skip too.

I think I've only received one or two catalogs in the past week. I'll consider myself lucky.

Funny nicknames are fun...I'm watching Scrubs right now while I straighten my office/computer room/catch all room at home, love all the names Dr. Cox gives JD and Elliot

I've got a friend who loves Scrubs. He calls me Brown Bear sometimes for some strange reason. Note that I do not have dark skin. I once questioned him regarding his reasoning. He looked at me and said "Well I can't be Brown Bear. Your skin is darker than mine". His skin is Irish White, my skin is closer to Mediterranean Olive. Oh silly nicknames and friends that love Scrubs way too much.

I thought loose tea leaves sank to the bottom of the cup :frown:

The leaves usually float. If you've got some dust from the tea, that usually sinks.

Dr. Cox is my favorite, he's kinda like the Captain Quint of Sacred Heart
I stopped watching Scrubs during Season 3, lost some of it's spirit, I guess...tends to happen to all shows, but I digress
Never was much into "doctor" shows, my wife likes ER, but I other than Sarah Chalke Scrubs, the really don't interest me (could be because it's all above my head)

See... Sarah Chalke really interested me in the first season or two. But something happened that made her less appealing to me. I'm not quite certain what it was.

Another thing. My daughter in law talked me into coming up to her work last night for an eye exam. It turned out that I was seeing 20/40 in one eye and 20/30 in the other. The doc told me that for my age that is remerkable. But he still recommended glasses. I hate glasses!! So my D-I-L got me a few pairs of contacts instead and showed me how to put them in. Well, the one in my right eye is for astigmatism, and it has a little "weight" on it. Talk about annoying!! Damn, these things will take some getting used to. Honestly though, my vision is a little sharper now. I just hope I can get over the feeling of having something in my eye (which of course there is!!). Any of ya'll wear contacts?

I'd never wear contacts. I wear reading glasses on occasion.

Jen, us kids were happy if we ate every day. By the time I was old enough to attend the eighth grade, I was in a coal mine. Back then you had a choice. Get an education, or eat. I chose to eat.

There is a quote attributed to John Adams I really enjoy that I feel is relevant to Rolls' statement:
I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.

I ran into a beautiful black lab and his owner while riding my bike last night. I stopped and had a conversation with the owner. The lab was off of the leash and impeccably behaved. Quite a remarkable dog.

I think everyone is trying to figure out where the guy lives on the PIF in BST. Too bad they are a day late and a dollar short. Of course, the fellow may have moved since September.............

Hmmm... I have no idea what you're talking about, Rolls.

I'm glad those beans found a home. Doctor's orders, I can't drink caffeinated coffee.

Hmmm on the second question? (Running over to 'How Many Shaves...' to see what you posted.)

Are you a hunter? What kind of dogs do you have? I may have missed a Lynchmeister dog thread somewhere.

I have a Hungarian Vizsla and a blue Weimaraner (pictured wearing sable hats in my hard to see avatar). Both are 4 1/2 years old and more active than most dogs 1/2 their age. I do not hunt them, but try my best to give them an hour of off leash time a day to run and chase little critters and birds.

I'm sure you'll stumble across a thread or two (million) with my talking about the dogs. We just got the Weim 2 weeks ago and the two of them have made my wife and I very happy. We love having two dogs! The cat though...not so much.

Are you talking about putting all of the picks in a spreadsheet? If so, I would rather not. Right now, only I can edit my posts on the picks -- which prevents any shenanigans with regard to people potentially trying to change their picks in a shared spreadsheet.

this time, no it's not just you
confirmed, there's not much worse than that
yeah, that was one of my favorites
yep, that's his band
I only have season one, I might pickup season 2...it was hit and miss on the rest of the seasons the ones I really liked and some I didn't...that's the problem with TV shows, once they start going in the direction of relationships, it kinda limits how much longer they can go on, that's what killed Ed for me, I really liked that show, but the whole subplot of the one girl falling for the jackass in the final season really killed the whole series for me

I guess this is the proper place to do this. For all who read this in the future, this was my official 1000th post!!

It has been a genuine pleasure being a part of this forum.

Congrats, Rolls. It's been a pleasure having you here.

Can't see youtube, I'm at work. :frown:

Holy crap, I feel like somebody just hit me in the head with a hammer. The next hour and a half is going to take forever.

Hope you feel better soon.

No yearly bonus for Shep this year. Guess telling your superiors they're shmucks isn't always a good career move huh? I can only abide so much stupidity and then I must speak my mind. It's been my downfall for many years. I've accepted it. Love me for who I am.

Sometimes, it's better to stand your ground. Sometimes, your superiors are shmucks. I guess the lack of bonus will just mean you need to ease up on shaving supplies. Take the monkey out back and shoot it.

Hey, I just got a call. I will be away for a couple days. You kids take care. Ole' Rolls has to go on a trip......................

Take care, Rolls. Safe returns. I hope everything is alright.

:thumbup1:

I'm not a fan of sucking up either. Good on you, Shep.

Ugh. I just came back from the specialist and he did some nasty surgery to the inside of my mouth. The inside of my lip looks like something out of a horror movie. This Thanksgiving dinner is going to suck. I'll probably be sipping chicken soup while everyone else is dining on fried turkey. :frown:

Going to bed. See you guys and gals when I get up in the morning.

Whatever you do, don't try to blend things together in order to enjoy them as a paste. I had some nasty dental surgery a couple times and really wanted spaghetti that evening. It didn't end well.

Hope you heal quickly. And that you've got enough pain meds.

Oh, and congratulations on your recent promotion ...

Ooof. Low blow.

There is a feedback system, but it's an internal system not made public to the students.

That's what we had when I was in college as well. The rating system seemed to be bureaucratic nonsense. Horrible professors got to stay, while great part-time faculty and professors were fired or denied full-time status and/or tenure.

The undergrad student government had a website that allowed students to post their thoughts on professors. This is the kind of thing that I think every school needs.

Any of you guys or gal have a Rooney brush. I bought one recently on the B/S/T and that think drinks more water than anything else I have owned. I haven't used it much because I am so used to my 24mm brush. What do you guys like about the Rooneys.

I've got a Rooney. Why do I like it? Soft tips, but lots of backbone. Works well with creams and soaps. The size is great, too. It's the perfect size. I've got a large face, but prefer brushes with smaller knots and shorter bristles. They're just less messy.

How big is the know on that. I am not familiar with the Rooney sizes. Mine is a 1/1. Does 3/1 mean it has a bigger handle or a bigger knot?

I've got the 1,1 in super. It's a great little brush that works with creams and soaps, and for bowl lathering and face lathering. Quite versatile if you ask me.

I just finished watching one of the all time greatest movies - Boondock Saints - and happened to look over at the hounds. They are both sleeping on the same pillow for the first time! How adorable!

Earlier today, my wife and I took them out to one of the university athletic fields with their new "Chuck it" toy. This thing is awesome! Imagine one of those plastic clay pigeon hand launchers made for tennis balls. Need to tire out two hunting dogs in 25 minutes? No problem.

Ahh...tired dogs are happy dogs.

Boondock Saints... good movie. I was forced by someone to watch that when I was in college.

That "Chuck It" toy sounds awesome.

yes, that will help, if you could use something common in the pic too, to help give me something to scale to

speaking of lightsabers, talked with Micah earlier today about an idea I had...not sure if it will come to fruition or not, but just in case it does, I don't want to spoil the surprise
but I'm definitely going to try a light saber brush handle!
he also reminded me the previous talk of LS handle centered on a custom Gillette Tech handle, not a brush, but alas, me and my non-stick memory...:blushing:

Okay... so if you end up making Lightsaber ANYTHING, I'm going to demand that I get one too.

see, that's what I'm used to, and what I expect when I start to troubleshoot...something even more weird, last week I had a machine I was going to ghost, but started having the same issue...ended up having to get the machine's mouse and keyboard - after trying several different ones in my office, all Dell - before it would boot
:letterk2:

hmmm, it's a pretty safe habit to fallback to old tech in situations like that, unfortunately the one I just mentioned didn't have PS/2 ports to use

The people that design technology can be so stupid sometimes. I've run across a laptop that came default with no CD drive and a BIOS that only allowed booting from the internal hard drive. If this isn't stupid, I don't know what is.

Oh... the good old days of PS/2 and serial ports. How I miss them.

Tough situation. I feel for you and wish you all the best. I hope this is perceived the way I mean it, which is to say sort of, "Look on the bright side of a shitty situation." I basically said I felt sorry for her, didn't really suprise me that she's pregnant, thought she was a complete moron for letting this happen, find the whole thing disgusting and really was saddened that she completely destroyed her life in less than 3 months.

She maintains I was a bad husband, but really I wasn't. I'm not just saying that. It's true. She had anything she wanted in front of her and she tossed it all out for what she's got now - nothing and a dim future full of single motherhood to a kid put in a terrible situation. Brilliant.

It really breaks my heart to see what she is doing to herself however there is nothing I can do and nothing I would do to fix it. She made the bed so she can sleep in it.

With that I'm out. Night folks.

Tracy - I was looking for an old post I made on SCS lathering procedure. I couldn't find it. I'll lather up with some SCS Coconut Oil this weekend and get back to you in more detail.

I haven't used SCS creams in a while, so I'm going to say what I remember from memory. I usually start off with a drier brush when using SCS creams. I also use a nice almond-sized scoop of cream. I remember it being easier for me to whip up SCS cream in a bowl rather than face-lathering. Sue's creams require more whipping than most and take a lot of water as well. I make sure to whip the cream a lot before adding any more water. I also add water very, very slowly, as I find that it's very easy to miss the sweet spot with the SCS creams. I remember getting an explosion of lather when I finally reach that sweet spot.

I'll update as needed this weekend.

Nothing is going to bring me down. I've been through a lot and nothing has broken me so far. I don't blame myself for what happened. I harbor no guilt in the situation and I've not once asked what I could have done to change things. That isn't my nature. I have sat back and looked at everything from a logical point of view and see that I did the right thing always. I know I'm a good person. Not great and obviously not perfect, but a good person. I'd never dream of doing the things she's done. My head is high and while it will take a while to get my mind straight I'll always forge ahead towards my destination.

It's a bit wet here, rained a touch last night. This building has some drips. The scary thing is I can hear most of them but there isn't water anywhere. Wonder if it's dripping in the walls. That would be dandy.

I broke the door to the shop last week. I was screwing around with one of the guys and pushed it too hard so now it won't close on it's own. The hydraulic arm still pulls it closed, but it sticks on the jam so the actual door has to be pushed shut. I tried bending the hinges a bit and then took a mallet to the door which only dented it. Oops. That's what I get for trying to be funny.

T-Minus ten seconds and counting.

The college I attended required the prof's to have reviews. As students we were asked to fill out a survey, not required but asked, on each prof sometime during the school year.

The place where I teach requires evaluations (moreso of junior faculty and adjuncts than tenured folks). The results (numbers, not written comments) are made available to all students. I think it's an excellent system, though it does tend to result in more full courses for me to teach. Ratemyprofessor is better than nothing, but be sure to scan the comments for outliers and toss them. Just like product feedback online, you tend to get the best and worst comments, with a whole middle range of experiences left out.

So what is everyone's plans for Turkey Day. Are you staying home, going to family functions, etc.

We bake on turkey so we can make gravy, and then fry 2 turkeys. All the fixins and we go to my in-laws for a big family meal.
We give out turkeys or hams for thanksgiving at work so that is why we cook so many turkeys.

My grandparents and a few aunts and uncles will be coming over to our house this year. This is one of my few meat eating holidays, we're roasting a 23 lb fresh turkey, and all the usual awesome sides, all home made, stuffing, mashed potatoes, stuffed artichokes, I think we're making a ham too but I've never been a big fan of ham. My mom also makes home made chocolate chip cookies, tri-color cookies and apple pie, there will also be birthday cake.

Well, we Canadians have our Thanksgiving in mid-October, so nothing special happening here ...

... but on a slightly different note, which day do you consider to be "The Day" for Thanksgiving? It seems that most people I know have their big meal and gathering on the Sunday ... but isn't 'Thanksgiving Monday' the holiday? Just wondering ...

Thanks. I didn't raise my voice or say anything too awful. I did tell her that I didn't think her having a baby was a good idea at all. I might have mentioned abortion. It's all sort of a blur. How big is the know on that. I am not familiar with the Rooney sizes. Mine is a 1/1. Does 3/1 mean it has a bigger handle or a bigger knot?

Here (http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/vshop/xcart/home.php?cat=152) is a very good explanation page about the various Rooneys. Sizes, styles and grade are all explained very well. Also I've seen in past threads where VintageBlades grades their Rooneys a bit different from other vendors so this may not be standard info. But it fits my brush as I purchased there. I have the 3/1 in super silvertip. As stated, I love it.

I just finished watching one of the all time greatest movies - Boondock Saints

I like this movie too. I once saw a documentary about the guy who wrote and directed this movie. A pretty sad story. He was a Boston bartender or bouncer or something. Just an average dude who came up with this idea. He shopped it around on the advice of buddies and Hollywood took notice. A real Cinderella story. He packs up his entourage and heads west. There was a lot of wrangling involved and the rights to the movie ended up in the hands of the Weinstein brothers. They actually let this bartender/writer be the director. He ends up w/ some decent actors signing on. It goes downhill from there. Basically he was a very arrogant and brusque kind of guy. Didn't play well with other. You can imagine this didn't sit well w/ the big time studio boys. It's a long, convoluted tale but basically in the end the film was never really distributed in theaters, never made much money, he spent all his signing bonus cash and ended up with nothing. The movie ended up with a cult following once it hit DVD, but he hadn't worked a deal in his contract for residuals so he gets nothing from those rentals/sales. He ends up trying to get a band together so he can make it big as a rocker, but that doesn't pan out either. Basically he's fallen off the face of the earth now. Sad story but he brought it all on himself. If you google the movie you can find out who he is and then find your way to this documentary. I think Netflix carries it. Pretty interesting story.

Decided to follow Boondock Saints up with another classic - Cocktail.

Not that Cocktail is cinematic genius anyway, but I can't watch anything with Tom Cruise and take it seriously anymore. He is a grade A flake.

I can't believe Rosie O'whatitsface has her(?) own tv show now...
I see it lasting all of about 1 pilot episode...

She is a grade B flake.

Okay, I have no idea what exactly he uses in any of his products. However, he has extremely sensitive skin, and would not use any irritants in his soaps or ASB. I know that the ASB does have a touch of menthol though. The soap, takes over a month to make for some reason, and he only makes a few at a time. The shave stick sliver is a Tallow/Glycerine blend. Other than that, I can only suggest that you try them out and report back to TAT with your findings.

As long as it isn't a gold razor you can soak it in hot tap water and oxiclean. It should loosen it up and then you can scrub it with a tootbrush.

I haven't tried oxyclean, but have had great luck with a combination of 1) scrubbing bubbles, followed by 2) CLR, the 3) Barbicide. As far as I'm concerned, that's the holy trinity of non-gold razor cleaning.

Traffic's already nuts around here -- took me 45 minutes to get to the next town over to pick up some fireplace mortar!

My Thanksgiving -- here at home with my lovely wife and a friend of here from the curling club (another displaced Kentuckian). We just couldn't stomach the thought of the traffic for another year.

I believe the bottle says to only use once but its your body so what are you really going to catch after the 1st cleaning.
DO NOT leave them in there for much longer than 30-45 minutes. I left one in there for about 3 days and it did some funky stuff to the metal.

YMMV, but I dilute the barbicide according to the directions on the bottle, then soak the razors for 10-15 minutes. Chemically, anything more is overkill. The jar looks cool, but this stuff has a fairly short life once diluted (maybe a week or so, maybe less -- I don't recall exactly). I just use one of the cheap ziploc plastic containers, then dump the stuff. I do not habitually sanitize my own razors -- just the one time after I receive and clean them. And yep, most any beauty supply place will have barbicide. Happy cleaning!
