I made another purchase for my trip today. I bought a waterproof notebook. I want to keep record of things. The one forum has a section for trip reports and I would like to do one. Plus, I would just like to write up a report for myself anyhow. Also, I got a set of dog tags. I will not be carrying a wallet out there so I want them to be able to ID my carcass and have a contact to call when they find me.It's little things but it makes me excited to go! Add this to my water filter/pump and alcohol stove.

They actually have something called SPOT (http://international.findmespot.com/) for this sort of thing. I can get one on the Bay for about $70 plus $90 for a year service. But that is more than I have at this time. Meh, I'll be fine. As my room-mate said, if not, then I doing something with my life instead of sitting on my arse wishing I had.

My son made a Dear Jane phone call today, (He's in AZ for Army training). He was going to wait until he got back home in July and break up with his girlfriend. I didn't say anything about stringing her along like that, but hoped maybe she would find someone else while he was away, especially since he had been dropping hints that he may move and/or get deployed, etc. after this current phase of training.
So today he called me and told me he was going to break up. I didn't say too much, but let him talk and get it all off his chest. Turns out he has been talking with my wife about this and she encouraged him to do the right thing and get it over with now.
I remember when I was in the Navy and guys would get Dear John letters. They were often crushed, bitter and angry, so the most logical thing to do of course was to go out and get rip roarin drunk. Sometimes this lead to other problems.
So, I'm glad he took the upper hand and ended it without all the emotional agony that can get a fellow in more trouble than he can afford.

I would have agreed with you, but IIRC this stuff had 2 strikes against it. 1. it was an AV product, which even then (and now) smells vile and old mannish to me and 2. the lime smelled very synthetic, overly-sweet, and old-mannish.

I finally got to get out and help with some local clean up! Two friends and I started out on a Motorcycle ride today. We ended up a few towns South. We stopped to take some pictures of massive fishing boats that were washed up on shore. While we were there we saw a clean up crew struggling to shovel about 3 feet of mud out of the first floor of a business so we all grabbed shovels and helped them clean it out.
Pictures really don't tell the whole story. Its crazy when you actually see the devastation face to face.
I'll post pics when I can.

I'm going to post some pics here for everyone. Today we saw two boats about 100 yards inland on their side. The only reason they didn't get washed into nearby buildings is their anchors got stuck on the concrete pier and held them in place.

Ok, first round of pics:
The First Pic:
This boat is about 200 yards from the ocean. The only thing that kept it from going another 50 yards (across the street) and crashing through businesses was its anchor. Can you believe that? The anchor got caught up in the concrete pier and prevented it from going any further.
The second pic:
Front side of the same boat
The third pic:
Another shot of that same boat from across the street. The passing van gives you a good idea just how big the fishing boat is. FWIW only about 2/3 of the boat is in the actual frame.
The fourth pic:
The business directly across the street from the boat. The lower level was filled with about 3-4 feet of mud
The fifth pic:
Another boat that was washed ashore. Far less damaged. That's my Ducati in the foreground! :thumbup1:

Okay, last night sucked! I had to start out in ECC (ER). I had six Patient Watches! We only have five psych rooms and we only were using three of them for psych patients. The other two were being used for regular patients. Those two are regular rooms but have cameras in them. So, I had three rooms and three patients sitting in the hall around my desk. With all of the reports, flow sheets, etc, that is too many. One person can not reliably keep an eye on that many patients at once. It may not seem like a lot but you would know if you've had to do this. Fortunately, all of them were pretty good. The only one that was a problem was pretty tame. Of course, the way the night played out, I was stuck back there for over half of my shift. But, when I was finally relieved, I only had one watch left. The rest of the night went pretty well for me.
Now, here is the killer. Over the weekend, I was short staffed. We have a new guy that only works weekends. He has not been trained to do squat yet. Saturday, I had him and one other officer besides myself. The next night, I had the same guy and two other officers. I am supposed to have five officers total, counting myself. Naturally, it was a very busy weekend. I posted about the crackhead already. So, I had to tell people I couldn't do stuff or that it would be a while. Some were pretty upset with me. What was I supposed to do? Therefore, I was fully expecting to get complaints from the weekend.
Guess what I got in trouble for? I did not have the new guy do a report on a smoking violation. Really? Are you kidding me? What a bunch of horse crap! You see, smoking is prohibited on hospital property by city ordinance. Yet, it is our job to enforce. We got a call from a nurse that some people were in the parking garage smoking with a kid there. They said it was not tobacco they were smoking. Had she not mentioned that, I probably would have ignored the call completely. But, the only guy I had free was the new guy. But, I had him leave his post and walk out there to investigate. It was indeed a regular cigarette they were smoking and they put it out when asked. Now, we are supposed to do reports for these incidents. Stupid, but it gives some VP on mahogany row the warm fuzzies to make us do this. But, he doesn't know how to use the report program yet. I could not get away to teach him, so I didn't worry about it. At the moment, I was more concerned with the domestic battery that was going on and had city police all over my hospital. As it turns out, this family that was smoking is under investigation with Child Protective Services already and there was a long back story I was not informed of. So, the nurse called back after we had left wanting to know what happened. Being we did not write report, no one knew and she was mad. So, the manager pulled the tapes and recorded radio log and was able to piece it together. I get a nasty email complaining that I should have had a report done and that I cost them all of this time trying to figure it out. Hey, I have a brilliant flipping idea! Why didn't you just call me and I could have told you? Oh, that would have been too bloody easy, now wouldn't it?
So, the fact I got us through the weekend even though severely handicapped when it would have been busy with a full staff means nothing. The fact that we had to deal with all of this other crap and kept everyone safe, not important. No, we failed utterly because we did not type up a da**ed report when we asked someone to put out their bloody cigarette. WTH!
God, I love my job!
Okay, rant over.

Wow, it's only been a few days, but ya'll have covered a lot of ground since I was here last. Between spending a little time with our sister-in-law who came down for a follow-up check-up at MD Anderson, the cancer treatment hospital, (which I highly recommend if you ever need this type facility, and I pray you won't), and finishing our latest B&B fund-raising event, and didn't make it in here. There's way too much for a roll, but let me try to do a bit of a recap, and I did have a few questions as I caught up, but they'll just be rhetorical, as I know you've long since moved on:
- Darren, why do you need a Nakiri knife by Masakge Shizuku just to make onion soup?
- So, we're all going to visit Danielle in Ireland (and I'm really going to be chapped, as in mad, not as in wearing Blake's favorite attire) if I don't get told about this TAT event!
- Rich says he used to be "young and foolish" - um, so, what does that make him now?
- Dennis is in a place where it's -2,578 celsius - hope you've got a engine block heater!
- Skklog made a rare appearance - and a not so rare disappearance.
- Crafty is still skillfully evading questions about Mr. Crafty's whereabouts (she really is crafty!)
- Darren and Dennis concluded Mr. Crafty is really a giant stuffed Sesame Street character - yeah, as in stuffed in a wardrobe in New Jersey!
- Blake's delivering pizzas now, sans chaps (is that like Sans-A-Belt?)
- ....and Blake finally admits it's fun wearing chaps without pants!
- Danielle says Crafty's CT should be "Officially awesome since 2011". Okay, but what was she before 2011?
- In the midst of one of the worst national disasters ever, Rob is complaining about British TV?
- ...and Blake defends British TV (didn't realize it could be picked up in Indiana, actually)
- Matt is the mediator in Rob and Blake's bustin' each others chaps!
- Crafty is looking for mod love, but may be "looking for love in all the wrong places" after calling Rob a "Troll" - although Rob doesn't seem to mind.
- Rich assures Crafty that mod love isn't what it's cracked up to be (not sure how Rich knows this?)
- No one else seems to question Rich's knowledge on mod love - I guess "don't ask don't tell" applies on TAT?
- Blake is super-excited about finding a water-proof notebook for his trip (nobody points out that he will also need a water-proof pen - kindly letting him enjoy the moment.)
- Blake is also getting a GPS the size of a cell phone implanted in his arse - okay, someone really should point out how this will ruin his pantless chaps look!
- Duckster posted a picture of the long-lost Canadian member of the Village People.
- Crafty spent more on a bed than she/they have ever spent on any other single thing (okay, am I the only one who's a little curious about their house and car?)
- Rich asked Crafty, inappropriately I think, how hot her new bed is?
- Crafty didn't seem to mind the question (she really is crafty, isn't she?)
- Darren, Rich and Garry made fun of sweet, synthetic old men (you guys really did miss me, didn't you?
- And Con....er, Intrigued's happiest day was getting downsized. I'm actually working on downsizing myself, too. I can get into some pants that I haven't worn in a while. I think people who wear chaps probably don't have that problem. Like Diukster's Village People person, he just has to get bigger maple leafs!
Okay, TATers, that's it for this recap. :thumbup1:

As to the waterproof pencil issue (and ignoring all others), Blake, I am reminded of the Russians vs. NASA back when the Apollo program got started. The Russians, on the other hand, packed pencils.

Ugh, what an ugly little car. My ex-wife owned a Xb and I had a Bb (the original Toyota) for a short while the last time I lived in Japan. The styling cues on the XB/Bb are non-existent. Its an ugly little car. That said, for its size it is very roomy and will get great gas mileage. I'd have gone with the Lincoln.:lol:
A couple more pics...
The pics below are of a house in Momoishi town. The house is located about 100 yds from the ocean. The water is about 30 feet below the level of the house behind that retaining wall. That wall is probably the only reason the entire house isn't gone. When I was snapping pictures I realized that the family was still living on the second floor while trying to recover/rebuild the first.

Welcome back Randy, I don't need a Nakiri for making onion soup, but it sure helps. It's like how I don't need a DE and nice soap/cream adn brush for shaving... it just makes the process batter. Yup, unfortunately like most others they don't have anywhere else to go and I'm sure they feel like they can lessen the burden by staying in their house. With the lower level ripped out that means, no heat, water, cooking etc.
I saw families living in barns that survived (because of location) when their houses were washed away. There are families living in the homes which were washed into their rice fields basically intact. I've seen families living in just one room or in their garage if those areas are intact. Its definitely a sad state of affairs.

The Fisher Space pen thing is partially true. NASA really did spend millions trying to develop an anti-gravity ink pen. That said, Fisher developed theirs independently and the Russians really did stick to pencils for a great deal longer than the US.
There is only slight truth in the urban legend.

Actually they spent thousands on mechanical pencils, not pens. Remember their budget was only something like $500 million in the early 60's and eventually reaching about $2 billion by the middle of the decade, with most of that going towards developing Gemini and Apollo, not pens.
Anyway, if anyone is interested on the history of the space pen: http://history.nasa.gov/spacepen.html

I went through and found some videos of places I've been or places near where I live.
This first video is during the quake. It shows buildings in the city swaying:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieWDQp9Krac&feature=related
Truly a testament to Japanese engineering.
This next video is at the epicenter in Sendai (about 230 miles South of me). The scary stuff is at 4 minutes when you see the nuclear plant engulfed in flames:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8GBNanmdnc
The next video is the closest major city from Misawa. Hachinohe is about 20 minutes South. The damage in Hachinohe was severe along the coast, but not nearly as bad inland as it was all the way down at Sendai:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fchEWTxXqOs
This next video is from our AFN (American Forces Network) station on Misawa, during the actual quake (They didn't start recording until the quake was winding down, doesn't really do it justice):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVIgqAbZJJc&feature=relmfu
As you can imagine the base was on point with disaster recovery. We have missions going out daily to help the people of Japan recover:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb3BRUEBqH8
This video is a story about American teachers who evacuated from Sendai down South to Misawa Air Base. They "commandeered" a bus and drove the 4 hours North to the base. By the time they got to us that night we already has cots/bed down in place for hundreds. The initial wave was only 57 students and teachers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soP6p4DMgJ8&feature=related
This last video is of our Navy brethren kicking butt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1YDE_zaITk&feature=related
It was really emotional putting this together. I've been to all of the places and I know so many of the military people seen in these videos. This truly is a trying time.

Yeah, the only time I've seen one in the wilds was years ago. I must have been about or six at the time and my family was camping up at Muskellunge Lake north of Newberry. Anyway, we were coming back from Tahquamenon Falls right around dusk and we saw one on a small rise near the road. Very cool, considering they just reintroduced them to the state in the 80's.

Hey Hey.....you should only hope to get to my age, but the way you are going...you do don't have a snowballs chance in hell making it....and STAY OFF MY LAWN !!!!!!
:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Can't say I've seen a moose. I've been in prime moose territory in Michigan plenty of time, but seem to attract bears more for some reason. Not that I'm looking to an up close encounter with a bull moose or anything like that. :lol1:
Yeah, the only time I've seen one in the wilds was years ago. I must have been about or six at the time and my family was camping up at Muskellunge Lake north of Newberry. Anyway, we were coming back from Tahquamenon Falls right around dusk and we saw one on a small rise near the road. Very cool, considering they just reintroduced them to the state in the 80's.
Oh and a word to the wise, if you do encounter a black bear up close don't play dead. It might work on a grizzly, but black bear aren't real picky about what they eat.
I figure moose is my biggest threat as far as animals go. There is supposed to be quite a population of Timber Wolves in the area. So, I hold out a little hope of seeing them. But, is sounds like I am guaranteed to hear them and close.
And yes, black bears don't mind if you're dead.
Now since this is Blake we're talking about, how do you exactly expect him to soil himself?

We do it to Saskatchewan up here... "Saskatchewan, Canada's flat rectangle"
RichGem
03-30-2011, 07:43 PM
According to the urban dictionary (of all things):
3. (http://saskatchewan.urbanup.com/2076376) Saskatchewan (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Saskatchewan&defid=2076376)
buy saskatchewan mugs, tshirts and magnets (http://www.urbandictionary.com/products.php?term=Saskatchewan&defid=2076376)
The big, flat, rectangle in the middle of Canada with a name that anyone who's not from Saskatchewan pronounces wrong. For future reference--"Sas-KATCH-ew-un" OR "Sas-KATCH-ew-in" OR "Sas-KATCH-ew-en" is acceptable. . .but not not not Sas-katch-ew-WAAAAAN. If you say it that way, it just screams you're from Ontario. Or Texas.
Suffer from paralyzing claustrophobia? Well, you've come to the right place Land of Living Skies (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Land%20of%20Living%20Skies), as our license plates say, is pretty accurate--that's pretty much all that's living. Our trees are generally stick thin and only look alive for four out of twelve months. Well, okay, so we're alive for a third of the year. That ain't half bad, eh?
NDP government that was elected by mostly farmers. I don't understand it, either.
The biggest city in Saskatchewan is Saskatoon (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Saskatoon), which, nope, is not the capital, even though it is home to a relatively adequate school, the University of Saskatchewan (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=University%20of%20Saskatchewan). Surprising, really.
The capital city of Saskatchewan is the city that rhymes with fun--Regina (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Regina). A city that is composed of three quarters flatness, and one quarter man-made lake full of goose crap. It's a pretty exciting place to be.
Saskatchewan is full of names like Moose Jaw (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Moose%20Jaw) and Swift Current (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Swift%20Current) and Prince Albert (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Prince%20Albert) and North Battleford (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=North%20Battleford). Apparently Saskatchewan has a thing for two-worded names. Except the original Cree is probably one long word that is slowly being forgotten along with the majority of their culture. Unfortunately.
Speaking of unfortunately, there is an unfortunate amount of racism in Saskatchewan. But hey, teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, and I'm sure the province can continue to turn a blind eye to the racism and social problems that exist, and people will continue to never know where the hell Saskatchewan is.
But they're missing out!
Tourist: Hey, can you show me around Edmonton?
Saskatchewanian: Sorry, I'm not from Alberta.
Tourist: Hey, can you show me around Calgary?
Saskatchewanian: Sorry, I'm not from Alberta.
Also, important: C-bonics....
4. (http://c-bonics.urbanup.com/2080571) c-bonics (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=c-bonics&defid=2080571)
buy c-bonics mugs, tshirts and magnets (http://www.urbandictionary.com/products.php?term=c-bonics&defid=2080571)
Canadian slang words.
An example of someone speaking in c-bonics "Last night, I cashed my pogey and went to buy a mickey of C.C. at the beer parlour, but my skidoo got stuck in the muskeg on my way back to the duplex. I was trying to deke out a deer, you see. Damn chinook, melted everything. And then a Mountie snuck up behind me in a ghost car and gave me an impaired. I was S.O.L., sitting there dressed only in my Stanfields and a toque at the time. And the Mountie, he's all chippy and everything, calling me a "sh$t disturber" and what not. What could I say, except, "Sorry, EH!"

Nope, it's just you. There were no women working at that site. It isn't uncommon for longer Japanese men to look an awful lot like women. Given their build all you have to do is add long hair and many are confused. In fact if you are curious read up on Bishonen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishōnen). It is very common to see a young Japanese couple and have difficulty distinguishing which is male and which is female. No disrespect intended but young men being effeminate isn't considered a bad thing.

I also saw my only glimpse of the Northern Lights when I was there. The tiniest white glimmer in the sky but still beautiful.
And I met the most amazing people. I was staying there with a dancer (there's a tradition of hosting out-of-towners in the swing dance community) and she lived with this cool couple. The Dancer was going to her home for Thanksgiving and I had planned to move on before that but when the couple found out I was going to be spending thanksgiving by myself in Regina they really insisted I go out to their families farm in Osler and spend it with them.
Seriously one of the most touching displays of kindness even bestowed on me.
To be welcomed so completely into a stranger's home and to share their food at a festival time was just fantastic and they made me feel completely at home. It was the only thanksgiving I'd ever celebrated as we don't do it over here and it was so nice just chatting to the older folk and playing video games with the kids and going out to the dairy farm and feeding a one day old calf.

It was the "nowhere hole-in-the-wall for rednecks" that really made me want to read the travel brochure and book tickets.
So what's stopping you? I mean, I know it's not the Land of Cheddar, but if you drive between there and your remote empire you gotta go through it. Unless you cheat and go through Canada.

I generally stop in Canada to check on the polar bear population and my northern emissaries as well as the former Vice Czar aka Limecat.
Edit: OTOH, being a "hole-in-the-wall for rednecks," chances are they've never even seen a penguin before. Hmm.... they'd probably greet me as the "Great Penguin Overlord" come to save them. Blake... look into this for me and prepare a possible itinerary.

I hear the polar bear population is on the increase, despite what the global warming folks say. I suppose that's why you prefer the south pole, which is also increasing in ice capacity, so I'm told. Stands to reason I guess, north pole melts, south pole freezes.

MB used the term "ice," in the title; that's all I know. I trust she'll come up with something good for you menthol heads.

Well, there is the race.
2000 left turns, how thrilling.
Honestly, I've tried to get into it, but I just can't do it.
There are some nice state parks here.
I'm joking of course. I'm sure there are some very nice state parks as well as the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, but with 98 state parks, six state forests, three national forests and a handful of national parks and lakeshores, it's kind of hard to find a reason to leave Michigan. :lol1:
Good point.
A real story and a happy one out of Japan.

Well it is faster to cut through Canada.
