Fire and drugs?

Some things are better left un-explained...

We had a truck to burn to the ground...one of the nice ones, too. They brought it by the shop before hauling up to Richmond...there was really nothing left. The cab had melted away...metal melted. When the driver noticed something was wrong, he pulled over the side under an overpass. The fire was so hot it warped a couple of I-beams in the overpass.

In a completely unrelated story.....Someone attempted to have a sign for a shopping center delivered...full of drugs. The driver went to make the delivery and the manager of the shopping center stated that she had not ordered any sign, and refused to accept deliver. About that time a "shady looking character", as the driver put it, showed up offering to accept delivery. Naturally, the driver said he could not do that, only the manager could accept such an item for delivery, since she was the company rep. It was taken back to the terminal, where quite accidentally, it was discovered it was filled with some stuff. Various law enforcement agencies were called in, dogs were sniffing all over the dock, and at some point this morning, an individual called asking that another attempt at delivery be made for their sign. When I left work today, a bust was in progress. I'm curious to find out how things went down.

Sorry to hear about the truck.

The company will come out on top of the truck issue. As it happened, it was a freebie...apparently Tractor manufacturers often "give" trucks as an incentive to gain contracts with the trucking companies. So, we really didn't lose anything. Downside, it was a very nice unit made by one of the better manufacturers.

Just a day at the office.

This brings to mind all kinds of stories. Vehicles are more flammable than you would believe! I once saw a video of a school bus. The driver smelled something like an electrical smell. She immediately pulled over. By the time the bus was stopped, flames were coming out of the dash board. She barely got everyone off the back of the bus. In fact, when the video cut out, there were still kids on. A vehicle fire just spreads so bloody fast!

I think we were all just so amazed that it got that hot. The foreman and the district manager - both have nealry 20 years each with the company - said they had never seen one burn down like that. Most of the mechanics have 10 years or more with the company and they said the same. You could no longer tell that it had once been a tractor.

The newer the vehicle, the worse it is. For some reason, new material/technology seems to equate more flammable.

Speaking of dancing girls. While using the showers at a truck stop, the other day, Mrs. OldSaw texted me to complain about how small her shower room was and wanted to know if mine was the same. BTW, I'm in Chicago land tonight. My beloved posted some nice pics of our morning in PA on her blog (http://mrstrucker.blogspot.com/) today.

Tomorrow we are planning on stopping at Iowa 80, the world's largest truck stop, on our way to Omaha where we are hoping to hoping to have a little impromptu meet up with Warren Buffet. I'm sure he wouldn't mind dining with us at the truck stop, I hear he's a pretty frugal guy.

Speaking of dancing girls. While using the showers at a truck stop, the other day, Mrs. OldSaw texted me to complain about how small her shower room was and wanted to know if mine was the same. I replied that mine was rather spacious and had dancing girls. She was slightly amused and later asked if the dancing girls were still dancing and I told her that they were taking a break in the hot tub.:lol:

We keep each other amused, because no one else will.
Am I the only one that thinks it's funny that these two are texting each other from their showers?:lol::lol:

Yeah, what the heck is so stinking hard about this? I mean for crying out loud, that's all I read about lately is zucchini bread and a plethora of excuses.

P.S. Please use extra freshness wrap on mine as I won't be home until Thanksgiving. Thanks Crafty, you're a peach.
Pretty smooooth, Dennis! That just might work. Just don't ask her what planet she's from, or you might find yourself driving the next leg of the trip with a zucchini stuck someplace where the sun don't shine! She's a tad sensitive about that!

Here is an amusing story Klog just told me on the phone. Him and his wife went to Indy last weekend. They stopped at a pen shop. The man working there explained how he was going through a pack of pens a week while in college. When he switched to fountain pens, it saved him $100 a year.

Well, this lead to saving money by doing things in the old school way. He turns out to be a wet shaver. So, Klog asked him if he had heard of B&B. He turns out to be a member here. Doesn't post a lot but recognized my name and has posted in Linux Mint. Small world.

But there's not distinction in being known as either "Blake", or "The Blake", so your request just doesn't seem justified. Now if it were a name that people look up to and admire or hold in high esteem....something like Stan the Man, for example, it would make sense.

But who in their right mind would want to known here as "Blake" or "The Blake"?

I failed DARE.

This reminds me of something amusing. First of all, my dad was a police officer so I sort of knew the DARE Officers. We had two, one male, I forget his name, and one female, named Tammy. Tammy didn't spend as much time with my group and she didn't know me as well.

Fast forward to about four years ago. She is now Chief of Police in that town. My dad managed a uniform shop until recently. I was in there one day and Tammy came in. While dad was away getting something, she started talking to me. I normally don't automatically think so, but I think she was flirting. She was asking me some questions about where I worked and such when dad returned. He pointed out to her I was his son. She acted embarrassed. So, to further twist the knife, I reminded her she was my DARE Officer when I was in Elementary school.

To say the least, she was not pleased by this turn of events. She practically ran to the back and hid and said she felt so old.:lol::lol:

Oh that isn't good! Are they going to have to replace the overpass?

A sign? Wow...

I have no idea about the overpass. Can you imagine how hot that fire must have been?

Re: the sign....I guess they figured that no one would ever look or question it. There really is no telling how much illegal drugs gets shipped via the trucking industry every years. There are so many ways to hide things away.

The higher percentage of plastics in vehicles nowadays probably doesn't help.

That probably doesn't help either with all these heated seats, heated mirrors and so-on...

No to mention, some guys have so much stuff plugged in their trucks, wires all over the place.....

As a driver, I hope my day never gets that exciting.

:lol::lol::lol:

I've only been in this business for a little over a year and I have seen this at least twice. One was just south of Chicago, I saw the truck stopped with the hood open and about an hour later when I was going back to Gary, IN it was totally engulfed in flames and the entire back of the sleeper cab was gone from being melted.

I imagine as a driver, you do see a lot more of that than I would. I am rarely off the terminal premises, but out on the open road with all the different companies out there...it probably happens a lot.

For all practical purposes, a steel beam heated to 1,000 degrees is expected to fail. A fifty foot steel beam will expand four inches at 1,000 degrees. If it is secured at both ends, like on an overpass, it will buckle instead.

I was about to say, "Hey, I'm a wife and I don't sound like that," and then I realized I was the person who started it. :blushing:
Now that sounds like my wife. Just the first part. The highlighted in bold part. I will never hear the second part. The part where she realizes she might be saying or doing something....uh, wrong?

And something must be wrong with me, because for some strange reason, that's one of the things I love about her! :001_cool:

Wow. Prayers for Sue and her family.+1

How many times must we tell you Blake? White + bright lighting do not mix!

Crafty and I went to college in Middletown, PA; not too far from your recent travels. Occasionally I miss the seasons in PA but I also enjoy year round warmth.

Nice.

I have no idea about the overpass. Can you imagine how hot that fire must have been?

It doesn't take much I can tell you that. It only took one Iranian grad student to completely destroy the overpass at i-75 and 9 Mile Road up in metro Detroit the other year. Luckily nobody was killed but that little unrepentant punk got nothing more than a $150 fine for reckless driving. They should have deported his sorry self after he started complaining about being fined. Dude! You took out a freaking interstate overpass! :glare:

Re: the sign....I guess they figured that no one would ever look or question it. There really is no telling how much illegal drugs gets shipped via the trucking industry every years. There are so many ways to hide things away.

Yeah, I'm sure that's true.

No to mention, some guys have so much stuff plugged in their trucks, wires all over the place.....

:yesnod:

Also... in fun news... so, you're saying that "The Blake" is really "The Situation" and was on Dancing with Stars and got flunked for dancing like a drunken horse? Hm... maybe I'll have to start watching that snooze fest after all.

How or maybe why is a better question... Why do you know of these things?:blink:

For all practical purposes, a steel beam heated to 1,000 degrees is expected to fail. A fifty foot steel beam will expand four inches at 1,000 degrees. If it is secured at both ends, like on an overpass, it will buckle instead.

Well, I'm no engineer, but I would think a beam carrying a load might start to fail at temperatures lower than that. That said, I've heard vehicle fires can emit heat at an upwards of 1500 degrees Fahrenheit depending on vehicle size, composition and the amount of fuel available.

That wasn't nearly so bad as when he got out The Veg and started to use the bottle as an aspergilium while shouting "Out foul demon!" I thought that was rather redundant.

My initial thought was , you have a point. I am sure that they were not discussing highways. Just as I began to type, a question popped into my head. Which is heavier, a ton of feathers or a ton of rocks? It doesn't matter if it is a bridge or building being held up. The load tolerances will not be exceeded or undershot by much. That being said, a bridge is expected to handle a wide range of live loads for varying durations whereas a building is carefully calculated at a set dead load.

Matt, you have created all kinds of questions for me. Having worked as a firefighter and in construction has always been interesting because I understood the why behind so many things. However, I am no engineer. Therefore, I am just plain curious.

Interesting stuff to be sure. Either way, the way Ray made it sound, they're going to have, at minimum, repair that overpass, if not completely reconstruct it. Warped I-beams, weakened steel, and a number of people relying on this overpass on a daily basis. Not a good combination.

Interesting stuff to be sure. Either way, the way Ray made it sound, they're going to have, at minimum, repair that overpass, if not completely reconstruct it. Warped I-beams, weakened steel, and a number of people relying on this overpass on a daily basis. Not a good combination.

Yeah, it's quite certain that we will be paying for a new one. And I am quite certain that driver will be looking for a new job, too. According to the towing company, there is a rumor that make of truck has had some issues lately. It will be interesting to see how things unfold.

:glare:

I had no idea you were Iranian.

I'm not! The moron that careened into two semis last year last year on I-75. Took out the overpass in the process.

Besides, no one would ever mistake me for Iranian. I'm so white, I burn if I even think about the Sun.

I feel comfortable here - comfortable to mention the good and high points, as well as the bad and low points of life. Despite our goofing off and clowning around, there is a genuine compassion for one another among the posters in this thread. Not to say that does not exist elsewhere, but I have come to genuinely think of you here as my friends.

Prayers sent your way Ray. Be strong in faith.

I don't mean to toot my own horn but, I had it in under four minutes. I impressed myself there. :thumbup1:

Excellent!!

I must add, though, from what I hear that "cheap" is not the proper adjective, and as far as pretty... Well, the mods are outstanding, but they are not miracle workers. :tongue_sm

I must say you all disappoint me that the bait wasn't taken sooner. :001_tongu

(tho it may be a good thing in the long run)

Me too! :yesnod:

Ray, I am so sorry to hear about your uncle. You and yours will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Wish I could really find the words but I keep getting my keyboard wet.

And you don't know how much it means to see posts like this from those of you here. It just confirms what I posted about all of you earlier.

Very pleased to meet you, Your Highness!

I'm sorry, but I don't see you citizenship papers here.

Please let her stay! She adds such a nice dementia here.

I just seen the post about your uncle, it can be hard to keep up in this thread. :blushing:

I'm sorry to hear about that, cancer is a horrible horrible thing, the black plague of our time.
