THE FOOL'S PRAYER

by: Edward Rowland Sill

The royal feast was done; the King
Sought some new sport to banish care,
And to his jester cried: "Sir Fool,
Kneel now, and make for us a prayer!"

The jester doffed his cap and bells,
And stood the mocking court before;
They could not see the bitter smile
Behind the painted grin he wore.

He bowed his head, and bent his knee
Upon the Monarch's silken stool;
His pleading voice arose: "O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!

"No pity, Lord, could change the heart
From red with wrong to white as wool;
The rod must heal the sin: but Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!

"'T is not by guilt the onward sweep
Of truth and right, O Lord, we stay;
'T is by our follies that so long
We hold the earth from heaven away.

"These clumsy feet, still in the mire,
Go crushing blossoms without end;
These hard, well-meaning hands we thrust
Among the heart-strings of a friend.

"The ill-timed truth we might have kept--
Who knows how sharp it pierced and stung?
The word we had not sense to say--
Who knows how grandly it had rung!

"Our faults no tenderness should ask.
The chastening stripes must cleanse them all;
But for our blunders -- oh, in shame
Before the eyes of heaven we fall.

"Earth bears no balsam for mistakes;
Men crown the knave, and scourge the tool
That did his will; but Thou, O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!"

The room was hushed; in silence rose
The King, and sought his gardens cool,
And walked apart, and murmured low,
"Be merciful to me, a fool!"

I'm not sure if I should say this out loud, but I will anyway.

I wonder what the spread (statistics) of formal education the members of B&B have? It appears that most are fairly well educated and I believe that I've seen a few "advanced" degrees.

Did I mention my dissertation was done on the Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotomoline?

Oh and Blake if it is poems you like, check out the works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, John Donne, and John Henry Newman.

:thumbup:

For some reason, I have a recent interest in poetry. I have never had more than a cursory interest before. But, I really like some of the...I don't know..darker(?) poems. I have always loved this one:

Edgar Allen Poe had some good ones too. But I don't just like creepy dark ones. I had one that I quoted to someone the other day in a text. I had to look it up but can't find it now. I liked it too. I will have to ask her what it was because I have no idea now.

I don't really get into poetry but Levi Jeans made me appreciate Walt Whitman just a little more (Pioneers! Oh Pioneers!)

My favorite is the Shepard's Prayer, Alan Shepard; "Please Lord, Don't let me screw this up!" (except he didn't say screw).

Funny story:

Once, on a long ago thread here, we were posting pictures. It may have been the Picture Tag thread, I don't remember. Someone posted a picture of a shark. So, I wanted to respond with a picture of a lawyer. How do you demonstrate a man in a suit is a lawyer. Well, I found an article about the top five lawyers in Boston. When I posted it, one of the gentlemen participating says, "Hey, watch it! I am number so&so on there."

I was horrified. I mean, I was talking to a lawyer. I felt so dirty! :huh: No, seriously, I was horrified but he found it very amusing and was very good natured about it. I don't even remember who it was but I remember what he looks like. :lol:

That was when I realized I seemed to be way out classed around here. :blush:

That is a pretty funny story.

I loved that show. :thumbup1:

I had a hard time picking a quote, but I think this one is currently the most appropriate...

Wise man. I read about it in the Steward's Forum but chose not to check it out. Enforcement is not my job and there are plenty of Stewards and Mods already watching. I can get myself in plenty of trouble on my own, thank you very much. :001_cool:

A HYMN TO GOD THE FATHER.
by John Donne

I.
WILT Thou forgive that sin where I begun,
Which was my sin, though it were done before?
Wilt Thou forgive that sin, through which I run,
And do run still, though still I do deplore?
When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done,
For I have more.

II.
Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I have won
Others to sin, and made my sin their door?
Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I did shun
A year or two, but wallowed in a score?
When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done,
For I have more.

III.
I have a sin of fear, that when I have spun
My last thread, I shall perish on the shore ;
But swear by Thyself, that at my death Thy Son
Shall shine as he shines now, and heretofore ;
And having done that, Thou hast done ;
I fear no more.

0 Deus, ego amo te

Prayer of St Francis Xavier, early Jesuit missionary
translated by Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J.

painting of the Crucified Christ by St Alphonsus Liguori

http://feastofsaints.com/stacrux.jpg 0 GOD, I love thee, I love thee-
Not out of hope of heaven for me
Nor fearing not to love and be
In the everlasting burning.
Thou, thou, my Jesus, after me
Didst reach thine arms out dying,
For my sake sufferedst nails, and lance,
Mocked and marred countenance,
Sorrows passing number,
Sweat and care and cumber,
Yea and death, and this for me,
And thou couldst see me sinning:
Then I, why should not I love thee,
Jesu, so much in love with me?
Not for heaven's sake;
not to be out of hell by loving thee;
Not for any gains I see;
But just the way that thou didst me
I do love and I will love thee:
What must I love thee, Lord, for then?
For being my king and God. Amen.

Just a Boy

Get to understand the lad—
He's not eager to be bad;
If the right he always knew,
He would be as old as you.
Were he now exceeding wise,
He'd be just about your size;
When he does things that annoy,
Don't forget, he's just a boy.

Could he know and understand,
He would need no guiding hand;
But he's young and hasn't learned
How life's corners must be turned;
Doesn't know from day to day
There is more in life than play,
More to face than selfish joy—
Don't forget he's just a boy.

Being just a boy, he'll do
Much you will not want him to;
He'll be careless of his ways,
Have his disobedient days,
Wilful, wild and headstrong, too,
Just as, when a boy, were you;
Things of value he'll destroy,
But, reflect, he's just a boy.

Just a boy who needs a friend,
Patient, kindly to the end,
Needs a father who will show
Him the things he wants to know;
Take him with you when you walk,
Listen when he wants to talk,
His companionship enjoy,
Don't forget, he's just a boy!

here is little Effie's head by E. E. Cummings

here is little Effie's head
whose brains are made of gingerbread
when judgment day comes
God will find six crumbs

stooping by the coffinlid
waiting for something to rise
as the other somethings did-
you imagine his surprise

bellowing through the general noise
Where is Effie who was dead?
-to God in a tiny voice,
i am may the first crumb said

whereupon its fellow five
crumbs chuckled as if they were alive
and number two took up the song
might i'm called and did no wrong

cried the third crumb, i am should
and this is my little sister could
with our big brother who is would
don't punish us for we were good;

and the last crumb with some shame
whispered unto God, my name
is must and with the others i've
been Effie who isn't alive

just imagine it I say
God amid a monstrous din
watch your step and follow me
stooping by Effie's little, in

(want a match or can you see?)
which the six subjective crumbs
twitch like mutilated thumbs;
picture His peering biggest whey

coloured face on which a frown
puzzles, but I know the way-
(nervously Whose eyes approve
the blessed while His ears are crammed

with the strenuous music of
the innumerable capering damned)
-staring wildly up and down
the here we are now judgment day

cross the threshold have no dread
lift the sheet back in this way
here is little Effie's head
whose brains are made of gingerbread

Most people have no understanding or appreciation of Poe. It's a shame. A lot of what his normally portrayed to be, by people who know little or nothing about him, is just flatly ignorant. Poe is one of the greats, and used his poetry and fiction to cope with one disaster and disappointment after another. His work deals with the darker nature - the real dark nature, not the weirdo fiend version that Hollywood has created - of humanity. That darkness is always there - always around us, ever behind us, just out of the corner of our eye. Waiting, following.

As always, the mods are doing a job over there keeping from getting out of hand. There are real concerns that should be expressed and discussed, just as there should be a real excitement about a potential new razor on the US market.

Yes, I've been following that thread pretty closely. I wish people would back off a little and wait for some of the reviews to start posting. If and I mean if this razor is exactly what the guy supplying it claims* then I don't think that thread is exactly a shining example of the B&B welcome he should be getting.

I'm kind of glad you brought it up here. It gives me a chance to get that off my chest without adding to the fray of that other thread. So thanks I feel soooooooo much better. :001_smile

* What must he be think of us if sees that thread?

PS This is in no way directed at you. I'm just talking about the thread as a whole.

As I pointed out, B&B is not the only westshaving forum discussing this in a similar manner. They all seem to be a little confused about why no one has heard of it until now. I searched the net for any mention of it, and everyone wants to know, but no one does. :lol::lol::lol:

Besides, as cool as it would be for a new manufacturer of a DE razor to be out there, especially in the US market, for that price, I could really rake up on SEs and Injectors, so regardless, I'll pass.

The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I tried the Wild Country ASB this morning.... it's not bad. Still more powdery than I care for (but I can deal with it) and at least on my skin, I didn't notice the plastic notes I mentioned last night. It seems to soothe pretty well too. Too bad most of the ingredients list is unpronounceable without a chemistry degree (oh, wait, I have one of those).

That reminds me, GMS #21 found it's way into my dopp kit and it is a very worthy little soap. Not my favorite scent, I like #23 better. I will give it a few more tries to see how it performs down the road and how well it keeps in an old TOBS avocado shave cream container.

Whatif by Shel Silverstein

Last night, while I lay thinking here,
some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
and pranced and partied all night long
and sang their same old Whatif song:
Whatif I'm dumb in school?
Whatif they've closed the swimming pool?
Whatif I get beat up?
Whatif there's poison in my cup?
Whatif I start to cry?
Whatif I get sick and die?
Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?
Whatif I don't grow taller?
Whatif my head starts getting smaller?
Whatif the fish won't bite?
Whatif the wind tears up my kite?
Whatif they start a war?
Whatif my parents get divorced?
Whatif the bus is late?
Whatif my teeth don't grow in straight?
Whatif I tear my pants?
Whatif I never learn to dance?
Everything seems well, and then
the nighttime Whatifs strike again!

There. Now I've done my bit.

It's getting way too serious around here. :001_unsur

And Blake is AWOL/UA again.

And I had BBQ for dinner. *urp*

He was here earlier, that's how we got started on poetry...

Thank you Lou And Jamie. Nice poems! :thumbup:

I've always been a fan of Edgar A. Guest, don't know why. I discovered one of his books long ago in a dark hidden corner of a library, the book was old and dusty but I have alway enjoyed his poetry.

I am disturbed that this has turned into a poetry discussion. :blink::blink::blink::blink::blink:

It's a good thing that the English majors aren't here to dissect the poems...

Duck-Rabbit Barleywine Ale. :w00t:

I tend to like Imperial Stouts more than Barleywines.

As always, the mods are doing a job over there keeping from getting out of hand. There are real concerns that should be expressed and discussed, just as there should be a real excitement about a potential new razor on the US market.

It seemed to be on the knife edge of being locked though.

Besides, as cool as it would be for a new manufacturer of a DE razor to be out there, especially in the US market, for that price, I could really rake up on SEs and Injectors, so regardless, I'll pass.

Of all my AD, none of them are related to shaving even though I had been lurking for quite some time...

More DogFish Head and Sam Adams for me then. I was going to bring some.

"WAS" :lol:

I'll take the DogFish Head and leave the Sam Adams, I'm not a big fan of the Noble Hops... More of an English hop enthusiast.

I had a chicken salad sandwich with sliced tomato I grew myself and a piece of chocolate cream pie made by a national champion pie maker. :drool:

Sounds delicious!

And since there is way too much shaving discussion, Rob's Lux showed up today and I really enjoyed using it. It may will become my go-to razor.

Funny thing about poetry is the rules only apply to whoever is writing or critiquing, and then only their rules apply.

I like the taste of the barleywine better than the stouts I have tried. The stouts are just too mind-numbing bitter. So far the best thing I have had is Stella Artois. And some of the English Ales are good too, I had a Tanner's Jack the other night, and would drink one again.

That's what I was thinking. I had to turn my Mac over and make sure I was in the right place. Just think, yesterday everyone was doing so well with their electrical innuendos. Then today it got kind of strange.

I was so looking forward to all the inductance and capacitance chatter today and was hoping to get into RF theory & wave propagation, which would also include antennas, waveguides and transmission lines. I was getting sunspots just thinking about it, kind of like multi-hop skip, moon bounce & Aurora Borealis all rolled into one.

:lol::lol:

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

And poetry hour begins! Were you all posting favorites or just some that you like. Here is one of my all time favorite poems:

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And this concludes Blake's broadcast day, Good Night.

:lol: and mine is just beginning!

Good thing you can put it to use pronouncing words mere mortals can only butcher!

:lol::lol: Thankfully I'm not merely a mortal. :lol:

Reminds me of a certain thread going on in the skin care section...

And that's how skklog got scope marks around his eye.

Ah, scope eye! Excellent redirect, Rich.

That's about all it's good for in my case. Oh, and I could probably draw a molecule or two if I really had to.

:lol: Yeah, but we all did that in grade school.

:lol::lol::lol:

:yesnod:

I'm not sure if I should say this out loud, but I will anyway.

I wonder what the spread (statistics) of formal education the members of B&B have? It appears that most are fairly well educated and I believe that I've seen a few "advanced" degrees.

We definitely have ladies and gents from all walks of life but those with at least some level of college education is likely higher than average.

I would have to say we'd land pretty well above average on a Bell Curve

(and even higher on the Taco Bell Curve...)

Mmmm. Taco Bell. Anything from Taco Bell drowning in FIRE sauce is awesome! :spockflam

I would at least say highly intelligent. Except for those few that I've run across that believe they know everything when they are completely wrong about whatever they are arguing. :huh:

(No one here, though.)

:lol: Love the disclaimer!

I thought you were talking about me....:lol:

:lol:

Any other time, I would be.

Didn't you ever wonder what, "OK, Jamie," meant?

:lol::lol: Surely he got the point.

Um.... "I'm right?" :lol:

:lol:

More like, "I don't feel like arguing this with you. You'll just keep going. I'd rather not get into a fight. You'll figure out that you're wrong." :biggrin1:

My ex used to do that but her way was "Whatever". Made me furious!

See my signature... :blush:

Monday. Nuff said.

HEY!!:w00t: I opened my mailbox and found that I have a box from Superman! Or is it a Blues Brother?

Or a SUPER Blues Brother?!

Did it have a tiny cape?

No, but one of them is probably bullet proof!

No, but it did contain kryptonite.

:lol::lol:

I could shine my pennies or clean my lava lamp. I could spend all day in my underwear watching "Ernest Goes to Camp".

Some interesting threads going on elsewhere. Have you seen this one about the new US made DE razor (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=162826)?

:lol: For what, bait?

:thumbup:

For some reason, I have a recent interest in poetry. I have never had more than a cursory interest before. But, I really like some of the...I don't know..darker(?) poems. I have always loved this one:

No man is an island, entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were:
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind,
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Edgar Allen Poe had some good ones too. But I don't just like creepy dark ones. I had one that I quoted to someone the other day in a text. I had to look it up but can't find it now. I liked it too. I will have to ask her what it was because I have no idea now.

:lol::lol::lol:

Except Klog doesn't drink. :001_rolle

We would probably get in way too much trouble if he did.

:blush:

I loved that show. :thumbup1:

:lol::lol::lol:

Wise man. I read about it in the Steward's Forum but chose not to check it out. Enforcement is not my job and there are plenty of Stewards and Mods already watching. I can get myself in plenty of trouble on my own, thank you very much. :001_cool:

Could it have anything to do with your recent interest in cufflinks, suits, fedora hats, vintage razors, expensive EDC's.... etc. etc.?? I blame[/strike appreciate B&B! :thumbup1:

I actually agree. People should reserve judgment until there is something to judge.

THE FOOL'S PRAYER

by: Edward Rowland Sill

The royal feast was done; the King
Sought some new sport to banish care,
And to his jester cried: "Sir Fool,
Kneel now, and make for us a prayer!"

The jester doffed his cap and bells,
And stood the mocking court before;
They could not see the bitter smile
Behind the painted grin he wore.

He bowed his head, and bent his knee
Upon the Monarch's silken stool;
His pleading voice arose: "O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!

"No pity, Lord, could change the heart
From red with wrong to white as wool;
The rod must heal the sin: but Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!

"'T is not by guilt the onward sweep
Of truth and right, O Lord, we stay;
'T is by our follies that so long
We hold the earth from heaven away.

"These clumsy feet, still in the mire,
Go crushing blossoms without end;
These hard, well-meaning hands we thrust
Among the heart-strings of a friend.

"The ill-timed truth we might have kept--
Who knows how sharp it pierced and stung?
The word we had not sense to say--
Who knows how grandly it had rung!

"Our faults no tenderness should ask.
The chastening stripes must cleanse them all;
But for our blunders -- oh, in shame
Before the eyes of heaven we fall.

"Earth bears no balsam for mistakes;
Men crown the knave, and scourge the tool
That did his will; but Thou, O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!"

The room was hushed; in silence rose
The King, and sought his gardens cool,
And walked apart, and murmured low,
"Be merciful to me, a fool!"

:w00t:

Sill, nice!

Did I mention my dissertation was done on the Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotomoline?

Oh and Blake if it is poems you like, check out the works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, John Donne, and John Henry Newman.

:thumbup1:

I don't really get into poetry but Levi Jeans made me appreciate Walt Whitman just a little more (Pioneers! Oh Pioneers!)

My favorite is the Shepard's Prayer, Alan Shepard; "Please Lord, Don't let me screw this up!" (except he didn't say screw).

That is a pretty funny story.

I had a hard time picking a quote, but I think this one is currently the most appropriate...

Yeah, I try to stay way from the threads that look like trouble.

Well, if you showed up more often you would see more of us! :angry:

I'm quite flattered that you looked all that up.

And all I will say is "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

Indeed!

My last thread, I shall perish on the shore ;
But swear by Thyself, that at my death Thy Son
Shall shine as he shines now, and heretofore ;
And having done that, Thou hast done ;
I fear no more.

0 Deus, ego amo te

Prayer of St Francis Xavier, early Jesuit missionary
translated by Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J.

painting of the Crucified Christ by St Alphonsus Liguori

http://feastofsaints.com/stacrux.jpg 0 GOD, I love thee, I love thee-
Not out of hope of heaven for me
Nor fearing not to love and be
In the everlasting burning.
Thou, thou, my Jesus, after me
Didst reach thine arms out dying,
For my sake sufferedst nails, and lance,
Mocked and marred countenance,
Sorrows passing number,
Sweat and care and cumber,
Yea and death, and this for me,
And thou couldst see me sinning:
Then I, why should not I love thee,
Jesu, so much in love with me?
Not for heaven's sake;
not to be out of hell by loving thee;
Not for any gains I see;
But just the way that thou didst me
I do love and I will love thee:
What must I love thee, Lord, for then?
For being my king and God. Amen.

Again, I like.

Just a Boy

Get to understand the lad—
He's not eager to be bad;
If the right he always knew,
He would be as old as you.
Were he now exceeding wise,
He'd be just about your size;
When he does things that annoy,
Don't forget, he's just a boy.

Could he know and understand,
He would need no guiding hand;
But he's young and hasn't learned
How life's corners must be turned;
Doesn't know from day to day
There is more in life than play,
More to face than selfish joy—
Don't forget he's just a boy.

Being just a boy, he'll do
Much you will not want him to;
He'll be careless of his ways,
Have his disobedient days,
Wilful, wild and headstrong, too,
Just as, when a boy, were you;
Things of value he'll destroy,
But, reflect, he's just a boy.

Just a boy who needs a friend,
Patient, kindly to the end,
Needs a father who will show
Him the things he wants to know;
Take him with you when you walk,
Listen when he wants to talk,
His companionship enjoy,
Don't forget, he's just a boy!

here is little Effie's head by E. E. Cummings

here is little Effie's head
whose brains are made of gingerbread
when judgment day comes
God will find six crumbs

stooping by the coffinlid
waiting for something to rise
as the other somethings did-
you imagine his surprise

bellowing through the general noise
Where is Effie who was dead?
-to God in a tiny voice,
i am may the first crumb said

whereupon its fellow five
crumbs chuckled as if they were alive
and number two took up the song
might i'm called and did no wrong

cried the third crumb, i am should
and this is my little sister could
with our big brother who is would
don't punish us for we were good;

and the last crumb with some shame
whispered unto God, my name
is must and with the others i've
been Effie who isn't alive

just imagine it I say
God amid a monstrous din
watch your step and follow me
stooping by Effie's little, in

(want a match or can you see?)
which the six subjective crumbs
twitch like mutilated thumbs;
picture His peering biggest whey

coloured face on which a frown
puzzles, but I know the way-
(nervously Whose eyes approve
the blessed while His ears are crammed

with the strenuous music of
the innumerable capering damned)
-staring wildly up and down
the here we are now judgment day

cross the threshold have no dread
lift the sheet back in this way
here is little Effie's head
whose brains are made of gingerbread

I am disturbed that this has turned into a poetry discussion. :blink::blink::blink::blink::blink:

:lol::lol::lol:

:lol:

:lol::lol: I have no idea who any of the banned vendors are. I am following the razor discussion, and throwing my 2 cents in here an there.

Duck-Rabbit Barleywine Ale. :w00t:

:blink::blink::blink::blink::blink:

Intelligent discussion is ok even in the TAT (occasionally) and I agree, Poe is under appreciated.

Um, it was set down too close to the pulled pork. I think it got eaten. Sorry.:blushing:

:lol:

More DogFish Head and Sam Adams for me then. I was going to bring some.

Mmmmmm, refreshing.

My Pre de Provance soap is up for next week... it's very protective, so I think Ray, you've also inspired me to go back to SE (GEM) shaving for a wee bit.

:thumbup1:

I understand. But, uh, I don't drink beer anyhow. Yes, really. Never liked the stuff. Unfortunately, the mojito I had with it was poorly made (lemon instead of lime. *major facepalm*) and too much ice.

:eek:

I had a chicken salad sandwich with sliced tomato I grew myself and a piece of chocolate cream pie made by a national champion pie maker. :drool:

To the tune of Surfin' USSR

We got a great wetshaving forum here on the net,

We've got it made,
Here on Badger and Blade,
Posting on the forums all day,
And here we sill stay.
Running up our post count, getting custom titles made,
Come on have some fun on Badger and Blade,
I am disturbed that this has turned into a poetry discussion. :blink::blink::blink::blink::blink:

That is my bad. :blush:

But now you are part of the problem. :biggrin1:

And, as for signing off, I leave you this:

The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Ah, the quote within a quote. Well played

I hate to deflate your ego, but the whole roll wasn't just you. :a9:

:sad:

Yea! BBQ! :w00t:

:thumbup1:

I always liked Silverstein

He was here earlier, that's how we got started on poetry...

I've always been a fan of Edgar A. Guest, don't know why. I discovered one of his books long ago in a dark hidden corner of a library, the book was old and dusty but I have alway enjoyed his poetry.

It's a good thing that the English majors aren't here to dissect the poems...

I tend to like Imperial Stouts more than Barleywines.

It seemed to be on the knife edge of being locked though.

Of all my AD, none of them are related to shaving even though I had been lurking for quite some time...

I'll take the DogFish Head and leave the Sam Adams, I'm not a big fan of the Noble Hops... More of an English hop enthusiast.

Sounds delicious!

And since there is way too much shaving discussion, Rob's Lux showed up today and I really enjoyed using it. It [STRIKE]may will become my go-to razor.

Thank you Blake! Oh, and I always get a good shave from a LUX :thumbup1:

I just didn't feel like it.

:blushing:

I also enjoy Robert Frost...

Good Night Blake...

Again, too much razor talk :mad3:

:lol::lol:

Oh, like we really need more nerds in this thread. :nono:

:lol::lol: :nonod:

Crafty happens to have a BA in English and I am reminded of it daily. :lol:

LMAO

Funny thing about poetry is the rules only apply to whoever is writing or critiquing, and then only their rules apply.

Not a Stout fan at all. That was my first Barleywine. 11%.

Very true. :yesnod:

Yeah, hi. I've been here for some time now. :glare:

Only because you didn't use commas. That needed to be corrected.

Now you're getting it.

:lol:, :lol:, :lol:, :lol:, and :lol:

That's why I always loved and hated English in school. It could mean whatever you wanted; but at the same time if the teacher didn't agree, tough luck!

Most barleywines are pretty strong but so are Imperial Stouts (if they're done right).

:lol::lol:

Well, the quota is full. No more after you. :001_tt2:

:lol:

That means Jamie can't stay, because he was here after me. Just saying.

:lol::lol:

Although I did use the improper form of 'who'.

I taught Junior high English for 4 years, and only my rules applied. :lol::lol::lol:

I like the taste of the barleywine better than the stouts I have tried. The stouts are just too mind-numbing bitter. So far the best thing I have had is Stella Artois. And some of the English Ales are good too, I had a Tanner's Jack the other night, and would drink one again.

:lol: LMAO :lol:

I was speaking of English nerds specifically. Science nerds have no quota. :lol:

...Or girlfriends.

I discovered that I liked brewing Mild beer. It's light and refreshing and about 3% so it's almost impossible to have too many. The best part is that it doesn't need much aging.

Nice, home brew.

+1, dang 30 second rule...

:lol:

Personally, I think that dashes, hyphens, and ellipses are against which unfairly discriminated.

:lol:

fify... :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Too many barleywines.

EDIT:Which is why i fixed it wrong 3 times.

LMAO

That's what I was thinking. I had to turn my Mac over and make sure I was in the right place. Just think, yesterday everyone was doing so well with their electrical innuendos. Then today it got kind of strange.

I was so looking forward to all the inductance and capacitance chatter today and was hoping to get into RF theory & wave propagation, which would also include antennas, waveguides and transmission lines. I was getting sunspots just thinking about it, kind of like multi-hop skip, moon bounce & Aurora Borealis all rolled into one.

Ah well... carry on with your poetry... see what I care...

Harumph!

Why not? The world hasn't stopped turning yet.

Or has it...

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone.
—Rod Serling

Apparently so. It was Twisted Sisters only hit.

:lol: Hit meaning #1? They actually had four or five songs that did well.

Oh, is that what they're calling it these days? :tongue:

I can only imagine what The Gunny would have to say about all this namby pamby poetry nonsense. Jackwagons!

:blink::tongue_sm

No soldier will complain about this one:

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

That poem was written during World War I by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. He wrote it after watching his friend be killed. It was written outside of Ypres, Belgium. This is in the portion known as Flanders. The bunker just pass the door is where he wrote this poem.

119001

This is what it looked like inside.

She's not gonna take it. NO, she ain't gonna take it.
She's not gonna take it any more!

we've Got The Right To Choose And
there Ain't No Way We'll Lose It
this Is Our Life, This Is Our Song
we'll Fight The Powers That Be Just
don't Pick Our Destiny 'cause
you Don't Know Us, You Don't Belong

Oh......

Well, we suckered you in. Songs are poetry too.

I believe we need some short posts for the rest of this page so that I don't have to scroll through all of the SlagleFlood and SlagleFlood quotes.

But, for our AF pals:

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I'll be waiting for your report at tomorrow morning's audience. Don't be late.

Everything is still cheesy, especially in Ripon. I dined at a "Mexican" restaurant that was more bar than restaurant and apparently it is socially acceptable for the high school Spanish teacher to take the class there for an outing.

For a town that has a real Mexican market, run by genuine Spanish/English speaking Mexicans, I was "surprised" :001_rolle to see that there were no Mexicans in the restaurant, which was less than two blocks away from the market. So I give them extra cheesy points for this. The only thing Mexican in the place were a few decorations on the wall. Chorizo was not even an option for the single burrito that I had, but it was covered with lots of cheese.

I managed to snag several tons of yogurt pretzels for export to the Flatlanders just outside the Cheddar Curtain, so cheddar revenue was raised on my visit, which should help to fuel this season's construction/destruction season.

Speaking of construction, I-94 between Milwaukee and the Illinois border is still being milked for all it's worth and then some. I think it's time to launch an investigation.

So there you are.

Excellent. We are pleased.

Good. Despite recent, um, renovations... the dungeons really don't offer much in terms of fun or sight seeing. Well, unless you count the wall where Matt/Gollum counted off his days of imprisonment that is.

Saw the final installment of the Indiana Jones saga. Nice date night even though some moron threw popcorn and gum into my wife's hair. This time, the nerds and geeks were outnumbered by idiots. I think the other members of our species went to the later showing.

Since there is no amount of eye bleach to rid my eyes of what has been seen, I thought I would share my misery with those that either weren't around in the early days of Linux Mint or were just too lazy to start at the beginning.

Mr. Gillette is a pretty decent fellow and I am not trying to poke fun at him, but I know he posted that pic just to stir things up, because that's the way he is. I actually met him and his wife once at his camp in Michigan. In fact, I think he should be there now, as they usually spend the entire month of August up there.

No soldier will complain about this one:

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

That poem was written during World War I by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. He wrote it after watching his friend be killed. It was written outside of Ypres, Belgium. This is in the portion known as Flanders. The bunker just pass the door is where he wrote this poem.

I believe we need some short posts for the rest of this page so that I don't have to scroll through all of the SlagleFlood and SlagleFlood quotes.

But, for our AF pals:

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

-John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Could it have anything to do with your recent interest in cufflinks, suits, fedora hats, vintage razors, expensive EDC's.... etc. etc.?? I [strike]blame[/strike appreciate B&B! :thumbup1:

I actually agree. People should reserve judgment until there is something to judge.

Sill, nice!

Hey Rob, it looks like you need to edit some of your end quotes... or something.

If one mostly quotes oneself, does it really count as a roll?

So... she won, huh? :tongue:

That's what I'm thinking... :lol:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Indiana Jones has jumped the shark and you were here to witness the moment it happened!

I believe that was called, "Nuking the fridge".

Forgive me guys, for going OT and talking about :eek: ... shaving....

I had to let you know that I lathered up today with some NOS Safari (ralph lauren) SS today thanks to Rob's recent sale. It's not a scent that I would wear as an EDT, to tell you the truth, but as an SS it was very nice. First ingredient: TALLOW! and it lathered up with nary an effort. My shave was comfy and close. Get some if you get the chance.

(now back to your regularly scheduled non-shaving nonsense)

Since we diverged into shaving...

I, too was recipient of some of Rob's gear (LUX and plastic Wilkinson). I've used the LUX and found it to be very nice; better than the Schick Corona that I had been using. I may try the Wilkinson next...

For advanced users: "jumped the shark" is for TV shows, "nuked the fridge" is for movies. :smartass:

Saw the final installment of the Indiana Jones saga. Nice date night even though some moron threw popcorn and gum into my wife's hair. This time, the nerds and geeks were outnumbered by idiots. I think the other members of our species went to the later showing.

My condolences to Mrs. Swampfox. Not cool.

What's that I hear, Blake? Could it be the sound of Kentucky calling you back for a visit? :biggrin1:

I was actually hoping to head to the Boundary Waters this year. If not, Wisconsin, Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, was actually very nice. Although I must admit, all of the great near-death stuff happened in Kentucky. Maybe Kentucky is the better choice.

I thought you had a bike. I think you would really enjoy the Tunnel of Trees north of Petoskey in northern lower Michigan. There really isn't much in the UP.

My bike is nearly 40 years old, first off. It is a little concerning to ride it that far. Second, and I mean no offense but this but it is a fact, my bike is not a fan of the weight of both Mrs. Blackfoot and I. It rides fine, but we bottom out on bumps all the time. Third, it really doesn't have any place to put that much stuff. A weekend trip, I can load onto it, but not for a week or more. Plus, that is even more weight.

Plus, not many tuna!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I was texting a friend this morning. She was rather surprised I used to write. My dad wrote Edgar Allen Poe style and funny poems. He was also an talented artist in sketching and some painting. These were hobbies of his as a teenager. I did not inherit such talent. I did write some poems. However, I was fairly good at writing short stories. I even started a novel that I never finished, once upon a time.

Between reading these poems and talking to her, I suddenly have an interest in trying my hand at it again. I truly loved writing back then. Irritating thing is, the results are something very few care to enjoy besides myself. It is the equivalent of forcing company to review slide shows of your trip to the Grand Canyon in 1960. :lol:

Ah, I'm lazy and a procrastinator. I'll probably never do it anyhow. :rolleyes:

Now people put into a powerpoint presentation and make you watch 500 photos of their trip/vacation/what ever set to music and you have to watch all 30 minutes of it because they are standing over your shoulder giving the play-by-play.

Not cool! I just fell down the stairs and can feel my knee tightening up already. This sucks! I used to have a lot of problems with my knees and even had to walk with a cane for weeks at a time. I thought it was something I would have to live with but Mrs. Blackfoot said I was too young to be using a cane and made me go to a specialist. Turns out, with a little Physical Therapy and orthotics, I haven't had any problems in a few years. I really don't want to have to start that crap all over again. :thumbdown
