Did someone call for a TAT League? :biggrin1:
I shall endeavor to service you. If I can spare a few moments tomorrow, I'll set one up. How many players? Do we want live draft? (yes, please). If so, any particular times of day better for you?
I've been so caught up in various projects and family business I hadn't even stopped to think about football coming up on the horizon. Obviously, we still have plenty of time. I like to draft around late August so that the NFL is as up to date as possible. Nothing like taking a fellar with your first pick and he gets injured for the season in preseason. It's happened to me before and it S-U-C-K-S!
I'll check on you all tomorrow...
Until then,
TATers RULE!
P.S. I think the Assyrians sounds like a nasty name for a team. :wink2:
Thanks Doug! I'm in!

FTR, I don't worry too much about proper grammar here like I should.
It's true.
Oh sure! Start backpedaling now why don't ya?
FTFY. You're not back-"selling" (peddling), you are "putting on the brakes" on some assertion or promise by back-pedaling, as though on a bicycle (either with a "coaster" brake, or, if it has a fixed gear, exerting force against the pedals to slow the bicycle and ruin your knees).
I won't even bother with the "smartass" smilie. I know this correction puts me in a different nitpick league, and probably earns me a "grammar national socialist party" tag. In my defense, please note I let virtually all grammar, spelling, and usage mistakes pass without comment.

Sitting in Gary, IN again. I was going to get a "new" truck, at least new to me anyway. However, the truck in question reeks like something died in it. It has all the features I was requesting, an APU (auxiliary power unit), refrigerator, air ride passenger seat for the missus. But the last driver must have really hated the company because he trashed the inside with something that looks like the slime from a can of Spam.
I'm waiting to see how well it cleans up when the detailer arrives in the morning. Not sure what kind of bugs are in there either. The whole thing kind of reminds me of Pacific Heights (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100318/).

Our mechanics won't touch some of them unless they spray the inside, put card board all over the inside, and the put on rubber gloves. They showed me one truck a couple of weeks ago that had grease dripping, literally dripping, from the steering wheel, particles of what I assumed to be food all over the inside, including the sealing, and it had an odor similar to Chicago ski slopes in the summer (that wonderful landfill off the Dan Ryan).

This reminds me. Gather around, it is story time. Not a good one, but, oh well.
At an officer's meeting, the manager asked for a volunteer to be responsible for reading all reports written by our department. This includes three facilities and about fifty officers. I volunteered because I thought it would be something to do when I am posted in the lobby. There is absolutely nothing for us to do up there otherwise. I know I write the best reports there also. I have been told this since I was hired. Too many people try to do a half a**ed job.
I had no idea what I was getting into. I have anywhere from twenty to a hundred reports to review each day. Also, I had no idea that our officers were so illiterate! In addition, many had not even been completely trained in how to use the program. So, I send a report every day of Incident Reports that need corrected.
I started out just making sure all portions were filled out and spelling was correct. Once I got officers getting decent at that, I focused on punctuation, and etc. I have currently moved to spacing. All I ask is that a space be place after a period and comma, not before.
Well, needless to say, egos have been bruised and I am rather unpopular among many. Our North facility were not using anything but the Face page and Narrative when I started. There are Persons, Responses, Vehicles, etc that they were not using. Therefore, we had no idea how many times a single person could been thrown out, for example.
Well, last week, I got an email from a North officer. He was respectful, but his anger still came through quite clear. He also blind copied my manager and director. He claimed I was nit picking. He said he had been writing reports for two years and was never told to fill out these "extra" pages. Why did he have to write the same information on another page that was already in the Narrative. He couldn't even find what I was trying to tell him to do on some. He also quoted an email I sent to my manager. This was a private email that was forwarded to Captains only. Lts and Sgts didn't even get this. Yet, he was quoting it. I was saying how I was focusing on spacing at the moment. He said he asked his Captain if I was kidding and don't I think this is a little obsessive. At the end, he posted a PS to my director pointing out there should be two spaces after a period, not one.
So, I could not pass this up. I responded with one hell of a punch to the gut, but equally respectful. I pointed out that when we fail to advance and learn, we become useless and obsolete. I pointed out a case where one of these "nit picking" mistakes got a case thrown out and cost a lot of money. I said our reports put people in prison and determine if the hospital will lose a lawsuit. One of mine actually put a man in prison for ten years. I explained the importance of the "extra" pages. I pointed out that his not knowing how to do this was a break down in the training he received. This was a dig at his Captain. His comment and quote told me his Captain agreed with him too. So, I said at one point, "as your Captain probably told you" since he would have if he was doing his job correctly.
My favourite part was the PS. This was obviously an attempt to make me look like I didn't know what I was doing to my Director. So, I explained how this was a matter of controversy. I pointed out how MLA and APA rules disagreed on this issue. I explained how the reason for the double space was the period did not show up often times when using typewriters. Now they are a thing of the past, it was a moot point. I added the double space was not for periods but the end of a sentence. I stated I did double space mine but felt I could not demand that of everyone. There are a lot of things I would like to see done differently but I can not make others use my style to write reports.
I sent this to the Director, Manager, his Captain, and him.
He had nothing to say. He thanked me for the clarification and said he would try to do better. Then a few days later, we received a response from the Manager. It was a 100% support. He said it was the best explanation he had ever seen. He stated Corporate has already noticed a difference in the few short months I have done this. He also stated this made him realize that the North facility need further training in this area, which I told him a month ago.
So, not only did this officer get shot down in a blaze, he has brought down heat on his entire facility. I love it! I am going to volunteer to put together the training for this.

Does anyone? On forums, I tend to write as I would speak. In other documents, like letters or e-mails to those that I don't personally know, I go all English degree on it.
Rob mentioned that he'd be the last team in that thread, so I don't want to step on his toes. Plus, a TAT league sounds like fun, so if that's doable, I'm all for it. I sent a quick PM to Doug to get his thoughts. I'm not averse to setting up a league, but Doug did such an awesome job last year, and knows far more about the whole thing than I.

I have been in a bit busy. You know it is bad when I don't feel like logging on here even. There is a lot going on but it is mostly in my head. I considered the idea that I was going crazy. Obviously, this can not be the case. Everyone knows I have been crazy for decades.
Okay, my depressing thought for the day. I watched a person die today. Obviously, I work in a hospital and deal with a lot of dead bodies. However, I am not usually there watching them pumping on them and witnessing the doctor call it. This was not what depressed me however. What upset me was I did not care. I was completely void of any emotion other than I had hoped she would live until day shift took over. The family was a bit crazy (and I suspect high) and was causing a scene, threatening the lives of staff if they quit pumping and things like that. Don't get me wrong, I understand this is traumatic to people. However, this was different. These were people that would likely carry out their threats. So, when she coded a second time, we were called to stand by. There I am watching some poor man doing CPR in between shocks and I had no feeling.
I have been doing this job for over seven years. Have I been here too long? Later on, I was asked what had happened. I said I got to watch someone die. I worded it this way as a joke. The one officer said, "You shouldn't have said "got". You should have said "had". You would have looked more human." The girl we were talking to shot back with, "Since when did anyone think Blake was human?" I was greatly amused. It is true, I can not show a lot of emotion. I do have a reputation of being so tough that I am not considered human. This is there reason they call me the Terminator. But, now I question, am I human? Maybe I am not. The jury is still out on whether or not that is completely a bad thing.
However, about twenty minutes later, this same officer and I were standing in the Lobby talking. This woman walked in with two little girls. Both girls were adorable. But, the youngest had on a little pink hat. I don't know what it is called. It reminds me of a Boony hat with a narrow brim. She walked by and looked up at us. She had to cock her head to the side to see out from under the hat. She gave a little smile and looked back at the floor as she walked by. She was so cute. So yeah, there is still a little humanity left in there. Just to make sure, I thought about this girl dying. Yes, there is definitely some humanity left.
I don't know if I am a cold-hearted bast*** or not. Maybe the human side is draining away. Maybe I need to move on to another job. Maybe I was just not in the mood to care today. I don't know. It seems like these are thoughts that should be pondered over some of Ray's beers he has been discussing though.
Okay, now I want to leave on an upbeat or happy thought. I am desperately trying to remember something funny from the last few days.
Well, I rode to work the night before last knowing I would likely be riding home in the rain. Boy, was I right. I had a lightning bolt strike pretty close by. That will make you jump a bit. I did the same thing last night. This time, however, it quit raining before I left work. :thumbup1:
Oh, I know! This just happened this morning. Our Director met with us this morning at our debriefing. He announced that they did a survey of the hospital earlier this year to rate the departments that do not fall into our normal ratings. Security is one of these departments. He was proud to say we rated higher than all other departments discussed and rated higher than the national average. He then pointed out that a lot of the ones that took this survey were 3rd shift nurses. The Director said, "So, our third shift nurses really appreciate the services you provide." All of the officers present turned and looked at me in unison. They meant to be subtle but when they realized they all did it, everyone busted up laughing. The Director was starting to realize what was being implied when one of the officers asked, "What services were they appreciating?" They again looked at me.
I don't know how I got this reputation of being Don Juan, but now my Director believes it too.

Okay, my depressing thought for the day. <snip>
desensitization sucks. in all forms and fashions.
and it can freak you out when you're in a situation like that and you almost feel like "meh, it's status quo". I'd say the mere fact that you recognize that there's a disconnect there indicates that you haven't stopped being human or having feelings.
Unfortunately in that field, it's part of the job. I couldn't possibly fathom being an embalmer or medical researcher and treating deceased human body like a clump of Lego blocks or something, but those folks do it and we have a higher knowledge of the workings of the body and better able to treat it.
As for the "been here too long" or "move on" questions, I can't answer those for you.
But it seems obvious to me that if you're bothered by the thought, that you've not gone (completely) heartless, you've just learned how to handle those situations in the course of your duty so that you can complete your job.
And it's appreciated by those of us who are served by folks like you.
And on the topic of "service" (nice segue, huh?),:lol::lol::lol::lol:

desensitization sucks. in all forms and fashions.
and it can freak you out when you're in a situation like that and you almost feel like "meh, it's status quo".

We are official. I only made 6 spots (2 divisions) because I didn't think we had that many wanting to play that wasn't already in Duckster's league. I did a 'scoring' league, touchdown and yardage heavy scoring, with head to head competition and live draft. I set the draft for a Friday evening because I didn't know when else to do it. :tongue_sm

:lol::lol: I miss this place when I'm busy.
Me too. I hear you.
I enjoy both 21 and 23, but menthol... I didn't know either had a hint of menthol. But I'm not surprised. My smeller no work too good. :tongue_sm
There's a hint of menthol in #23, but enough people have reported that it smells like "toothpaste" (and it's not an unfair statement!) that the scent is off the table for production. Mom hasn't had much luck making a minty scent she likes.
It's 6:55A and the cicadas are already screaming...it's going to be very hot today.....:thumbdown
Yep, 104+ here in DFW, with a heat index north of 110. Ow.
Desensitization is sometimes a necessary/useful defense for your emotional self. If you empathize too closely with the patient/her family, you might become unstable yourself, or at the very least become less able to do your job. Take time to nurture your humanity somewhere besides work. Build a house for Habitat for Humanity; be a Big Brother; go to church if you find comfort there. Hang out with friends and laugh.
While burnout is a real problem, I think you're introspective enough to know when it's either time to start looking for a new job, or time to run from the building.

First of all, I can't pass this up. It is just the mindset I am in lately, I guess. Damn is spelled with a N. Drop the N and you are retaining water. Sealing should be ceiling. Although food in the seals would suck too. Okay, I feel better. This is there reason they call me the Terminator. But, now I question, am I human? Maybe I am not. The jury is still out on whether or not that is completely a bad thing.

If you feel that ti is time to move, and you can find something you like, then maybe you should. However, don't let one, or even a series of bad days cause you to make a decision you will regret. I can only imagine how you could become cold an calloused. I think this is how some doctors become cold and are said to have "no bedside manners" - it just get to them after a while.

We see mess like that all the time in the shop. There are some nasty truck drivers out there.

Glad to see no one missed me. What an interesting week or two I have been having. Most of it I won't/can't even talk about. However, I have not hardly even logged on for a few days. I think the last time or two I did was from work. I see Matt is AWOL again. Glad to see Klog active and weird as ever. And where is Andrew with his...Oh, heck, I can't remember what this chick's name even is.
:lol::lol::lol:
That looks like my cat when he was young. :w00t:
First of all, I can't pass this up. It is just the mindset I am in lately, I guess. Damn is spelled with a N. Drop the N and you are retaining water. Sealing should be ceiling. Although food in the seals would suck too. Okay, I feel better. The real irritating thing is I know you guys will be able to pick apart all of the similar mistakes I make in this very post. :001_rolle
I totally agree with you. Some things are holy ground and should be left untouched.
I'll pilot the boat. :thumbup1:
Very true.
:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Am I the only one that noticed he is wearing nice cuff links?
We missed you brother. Sorry to hear about your days events. Desensitization is a reality and a necessary one in your line of work. Hang in there.
@Blake... ditto what Jesse said; I could not have said it better. Desensitization, at least situationally, aka professional detatchment is a necessary defence mechanism. If we took every sad event as if it were our own family, we would be total basket cases and unable to function/cope.
Exactly!

Recently, the Mullahs of Indonesia declared that Muslims may indeed drink civet coffee, called Kopi Luwak, which is made from the digested, stomach fermented beans ingested by weasel like animal. Before this declaration, consumption was considered unclean in Muslim teachings. The coffee sells for upwards of about 600 dollars per pound.

Like bacon, coffee can be kind of a cult. I wish I drank less, but I do like it, and being in grad school for a long time, and now with two little kids, it's sort of a survival mechanism too.
Of course, bacon* and coffee together isn't a cult. That's red-eye gravy.

I have it set for 6, but I'd prefer 8, so if we have a couple more want to join, I can easily make it 8 max. It's just a click away.

Hi all,
Long time reader... I figured that I would post something to get Crafty to change her signature.
Now let's see how long it takes for her to notice.
Also, yeah; Post #1!!!

Well hello,
Hey, that avatar looks familiar... oh yeah, that's right, she said you're an electrical engineer. Hopefully you feel at ohm here.

If you said that on the CB today someone would be sure to track you down and punch you in the nose... or at least break your antenna off so you can't say it anymore.

exactly, we specialize in rational numbers....like Pi...
Anyone who thinks that Pi is anything but food is irrational...
Odd has a completely different meaning here.
Different from what? There's nothing the matter with me...matter with me...matter with me...
exactly, odd is the even around here, even when even is odd, odd is oddly even...

cool....yeah, I would never say that on the CB, for multiple reasons:
1) don't have a CB
2) I tend not to say some things around folks I'm not familiar with
3) most important of all, after hearing the joke, I tend not to say "Good Buddy" anymore..........ever

I am? Okay which one of you knocked me up?
Tomorrow this time, we will be at 2010. I predict. However, you will have to post without me, because I am taking the wife to see Raiders of the Lost Ark tomorrow night.
Ray, aren't you about 30 years late for the premier? :tongue_sm
That costs extra. A LOT extra. :biggrin1:
What? How? Why? Why do you know that? :eek2:
Well, we can't have him miss anything now can we?

That should be the B&B motto.
+1, as long as we allow that some obsolescent practices should stay obsolete: we don't need buggy whips and whale-bone corsets to go with our razors, unless people just want to collect them. :thumbup1:
