You're right. The last sentence is hilarious. :biggrin1:

OK, TATers, I have a question about B&B that has been rolling around in my mind. And that question is about bacon. It seems like there should be a bacon smiley at the end of this sentence, but there's not one on the list, so, here is Batman. :batman: I place Batman here because the stupid smirk makes me laugh.

Anyway, it seems like when a topic, any topic, is about to get a bit nasty and snarky, it appears to me that someone throws in bacon in order to change the subject. Am I reading this correctly?

Wear your blast shield.

Speaking of things that could potentially explode, 6-yr-old Crafty made the mistake of asking why fireworks come in different colors. Mr. Crafty is showing them using different metals and elements and a torch.

I hate it because it is kind of cool. Curse him and his witchcraft science.

Curious how this turned out? It sounds like something I'd do with my kids, and that, similarly, Mrs. Soapbox would cringe.

My birthday present arrived today. :w00t:

Husband is out of town and I found a new love.
His name is Darwin. :001_smile
Isn't he beautiful? :001_wub:

Please -- if you took those pictures -- upload them to the wiki and start a page for the Darwin razor. It's gorgeous.

Enjoy, er, him, in good health. I'm not jealous in the least. Nope, really... well, maybe a little.:blushing:

(someone really needs to fab those handles for us. even if just nickel plated brass. sigh)

Yeah, those handles are awesome. A little tougher than the CooncatBob handles to make, I'm guessing.

No, no, no... it wasn't anything like that. No, you can actually get a pretty a pretty decent idea from the shape of their skull even with how young this one appeared. Females tend to have a more slender, long-pointed head than the males. Then again, maybe even that was too close, but it wasn't like I was like, "Cool! A bear! Maybe I should get closer!" I mean the minute he came out in front of me, I stopped immediately, made myself appear a little bigger and got ready to back up slowly if needed. I mean, heck, I even started talking to the darn thing they suggest you should if you ever encounter one. Might have even been the reason why he started looking at me like I was nuts. I mean it's not everyday a bear encounters a human saying "Hey there fella, I'm just as surprised as you are. Why don't I wait here, let you keep going your way..." :lol1:

That's actually really cool.

I almost got a bear in my tent while camping once. But I don't know if it was a girl bear or a boy bear and I wasn't about to find out. Scared the daylights out of me!

Where??

Oh, so sleepy! :sleep12:

Yeah, me too. I think vacations are only relaxing when you don't have young children.

You'll all be happy to know that d-bag chique is alive and well in Vegas. I have shed not one tear (tho have laughed my arse off) over the "poor emo kids" running around in 108 degree weather in knit winter hats (yes really) and hoodies (yes really). Dumb arses!

Well, they bake their brains with illegal drugs, why not bake their brains with good old-fashioned BTUs?

Speaking of d-bags, earlier today, I witnessed two such (non-emo, but college age, however), being hauled out of one of the fountains at Cesar's Forum today. Apparently they thought it'd be a good idea to take a swim, I'm guessing. As I arrived on the scene both were being hauled off in cuffs by the local constabulary... one in just his boxers, and the other nekkid. I wanted to ask if he was related to Blake, but decided not to interfere with the legal system at that point.

Those d-bags need more self-esteem and a better set of hobbies. Like shaving.

Tickets to Jersey Boys tomorrow night.

And, that's your update for now.

My in-laws absolutely loved Jersey Boys. Hope you did.

Oh, one more quick addendum... went into the local AOS on a lark to sniff their lemon soap. Smelled mostly tallow. Tried the lemon EDT, very bland and "pledge" smelling. The older woman (late mid-age), who was very polite, launches into her spiel about what do I shave with, do I have any problems, etc.....

Well, not one to pass up an opportunity like that , I launch into my spiel on DE razors, hard soaps, etc. etc. etc. Deer in headlights was her reaction. Priceless. When sufficiently recovered, she recommends the AOS "system" to me along with the latest torture device from Gillette. Again, all very polite. I tell her that I"m getting great shaves just as it is. She says, but "AOS way" is much faster. I say, why rush? I enjoy shaving. Well, now she's convinced that I'm totally looney and wanders off to help someone else. Priceless.

Griefing the local AoS stores is good fun.

With a dangerous heat wave hovering over the midwest, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory. During this heat wave Mrs. Oldsaw and I decided to get some groceries at a Wal-Mart in St. Louis. While there, in walks this teenage kid wearing a T-shirt, shorts and a plaid bomber hat. These things are stinking hot in the dead of winter and the heat index was over 100!

Being chic has its price. Suffering for fashion just makes you authentic, man.

I saw a young guy wearing bright pink crocs tonight. It was not a pretty sight. :nonod:

Little soapbox has a pair of bright pink Dora the Explorer Crocs. She loves them. They would NOT be appropriate for anyone other than girls under about seven years of age.

Alright, well, I'm back home while the family remains in Atlanta for the week. Had an absurdly easy time in the airport -- one checked bag, no delays, no kids, and we arrived at DFW 15 minutes early. The house is eerily silent. I turned the thermostat up to 80 because I'd be guilty running the whole electricity bill up for myself.

Started my "home alone to-do list" by replacing a sprinkler head, then moved to collapsing cardboard boxes for recycling. Made a quick run to Wal-Mart in Lewisville and bought their last 7 packs of ASR DE blades for $1.76 each, plus a few groceries. I've got a couple of computer tasks to work with tonight, far away from curious little hands, so I can spread out if needed. Plus, an old friend let Mrs. Soapbox borrow the entire series of The West Wing on DVD, so I've got entertainment spilling everywhere for a while.

It turned out OK. He just used a torch and put the tips of different wires in. And then put salt on one. Kind of neat.

Glad you are enjoying your alone time. Further, I am about 3/4 done with SBjr's hat. It would have been done already, but I have kids. And they are loud. And they pull out stitches of my work.

@Chuck et al., there's a Brazilian BBQ place across the street at the Mirage. Just came from there for dinner. $40 all you can eat of every type of animal. I am so stuffed it's beyond belief, but boy was it goooooooooooooood. The caiperinha was one of the best I've every had... perfect balance of ingredients and very very smooth.

$40 for a hyena? I coulda just picked up a little ground hog for you in PA, some armadillo in TX or raccoon in WI, all of which can be fond resting quietly on the side of the road. Wouldn't have cost nearly as much.

Amazingly slow getting to my plate and even slower digesting. :tongue_sm

Turkey bacon? :scared:

Recent research has discovered some mistakes in translating the bible. Below are three examples.

Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets Turkey Bacon, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Mat 24:11 And many false prophets Turkey Bacons shall rise, and shall deceive many.

Rev 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb pieces of Turkey Bacon, and he spake as a dragon.

Canadian Bacon is not the proper shape to be called bacon.

Also, it was a movie with John Candy.

One of my favourite movie lines came from that movie. "There's a time to think, and a time to act. And this, gentlemen, is no time to think."

From Wikipedia:

Back bacon comes from the loin in the middle of the back of the pig. It is a very lean, meaty cut of bacon, with less fat compared to other cuts. It has a ham-like texture. Most bacon consumed in the United Kingdom is back bacon.[8] Americans may call this cut Irish bacon or Canadian bacon.

@All.... Jersey Boys was quite good. Had the original Vegas lead. My only niggle (and I know I'm being picky) is that they changed the timing on a few of the songs and phrases on the songs and the lead way over enunciated his lines; that got distracting.

All-in-all tho, I liked "The Buddy Holly Story" better (community theater)....it had more of a story and the music was more faithful to the original.

Tomorrow nite, prolly gonna go see Matsui... Japanese gymnasts of some sort. Recommended to me by a certain Canadian Cat.

Oh, and on the subject of bacon.... my favorite little bistro here (Mon Ami Gabi @ the Paris) has the best bacon.... American style but thick cut and cooked in maple syrup and apple smoked or some such thing. They also have awesome coffee and food in general.

From July 19:

Two months ago, our precious daughter Emily suffered a severe injury on our farm while feeding our horses. What we didn’t know or could have known was how drastically our lives would change from that moment on. Since that time, Emily has been on what seems like a proverbial roller coaster, as each day brings new challenges. God has spared our child and for that we give Him all the glory. Keith and I want YOU to know, YOU who have been vigilant in prayer, YOU who have sacrificed so much so that we could be there with Emily, YOU who have loved us so much, even though you may not even know us, we want YOU to know how grateful we are and we will never forget what has been done on Emily’s behalf. We have been bathed in prayer since day one and we know absolutely that God has answered those prayers as we get to hold our child each and every day. We have been completely overwhelmed as well by the monetary support given through donations and fund raisers which, for us, has allowed us to spend these months with our daughter. You will never know how thankful we are to live in a community filled with such loving people as you. Our promise to you is that we will do our best to honor what God has given us each and every day and never to take life for granted. So it is with love filled hearts that Keith and I send this letter out to those who have touched our lives in such a drastic way, we love you and thank you so very much. May God bless you and your families and know that we will never forget what you have done for us. Cathy, Keith and Emily Heldt

we went to Dauphin Island last week, at the mouth of Mobile Bay, where I've gone to every year for the last 33 years, while visiting grandparents and the rest of my aunts and uncles. It didn't look bad out there, there's been some oil and tar balls there, but so far it hasn't been hit hard, but it won't last. I was hesitant to let the kids wade out in the water any, we didn't even wear swimsuits when we went this year, just went to look, but the kids wanted to walk in the water some, including my nephew, who had never been to a beach until now - he's 7. We decided that it was either now, or in 20 years when it's finally safe again, so we let them wade out a bit. Didn't smell oil like we did when we drove through Gulfport, MS, so I felt okay about it, though not 100%. But, like I said, I'll be very surprised if it's still clear next year.

At the big Mobile Flea Market, the had some shirts for sale I almost bought. Instead of Calvin peeing on Ford/Chevy/sports team/whatever, had an oil-covered pelican peeing oil on a BP sign, pretty much the general consensus in the area. Saw very few vehicles pumping gas at BP stations, while a Chevron or Shell across the street would have people lined up.

Why does it always have to be the bathroom? For the second time, I'll have to completely clean out and wipe out all of my shaving supplies and razors because of a repair issue in the bathroom. We had a leak from upstairs to spring, no one bothered to tell me that they would be making repairs today. The sheetrock guy is over here now, and I probably have sheetrock dust all over everything.

I've heard of people throwing excrement, garbage and other nice things at the BP gas stations. What people don't realize is, that isn't really hurting BP as much as it is hurting private business owners and people who have jobs at those stations.

Personally, as long as BP continues to have gas cheaper than anyone else around here, I'll keep on buying.

again, all facts, well stated. it's the whole "object of frustration" type of thing. Yes, it could have easily been a Shell well (hehe, that rhymed :biggrin1:), and it would be all the same, with a different name (hehe, rhymed again...I'm a poet, and wasn't even aware....or something like that)

I still don't buy Exxon gas - less of the spill, and more for the two times I did use it about 15 years ago, the vehicle I was driving at the time (two different vehicles) died on me while driving down the road. Started putting Texaco and Chevron in them, never had another problem.

Anyway, the overall impact of the "protesters" who aren't using BP in the area is probably about the same as Proctor and Gamble see when we don't buy Mach Eleventy-Seven cartridges, but it's still a way for the people in the area to vent.

Well, there is some kind of problem. I got about 10 mile from home and I started noticing a squeak sound at low speeds. Huh, I'll have to look at that when I get home. Twenty miles or so, I was getting to South Whitley. Now, that squealing was worse and more persistent. I stopped at a place called Carol's Corner. It is a drive-in too. It doesn't have the atmosphere of Arnold's, but is tasty. The malts are not near as good though. I left there and the squeal was just as bad. Ten more miles and I was in Larwill. Now that squealing was really bad at lower speeds. Uh oh, I wonder if I should turn around. Pull out of Larwill and the squealing did not want to stop at first. Worse case scenario, I have family a few miles north of South Whitley. They were the ones that helped when my clutch cable broke. I discovered if I kept lightly on the brake, the squealing would stop. Once I was up to 60, it would stop. So, I got her back to Huntington and stopped at an AutoZone. The guy there says it sounds like my pads are glazed and I have to replace them. That means my bike is out of commission until the new ones are ordered and arrive. It is a forty year old bike. Something I liked, something I hated...I'll probably leave it alone, and keep sampling. There's a store about 5 minutes away that has an enormous selection of crafts and imports...should keep me busy for a while.

Well, in your defense it's fun to come up with ways in which the prophecy will come true. For example, a plane full of tombstones could hit your house, killing you while you're eating a tuna fish sandwich while listening to AC/DC's TNT. See? Isn't that fun?

Funny you should mention that....

I usually do unless I am going to be in the hot sun for a few hours traversing the countryside, like today. :whistling:

I rode about another 10 miles and the squealing started really loud even at high speeds. Oh :censored:, now what. I turned around. They aren't exactly stock items. When I left, it wasn't squealing. So, I tried not to use the front brake that much. As I pulled into the addition, it was squealing lightly at low speeds.

Now what do I do? :cursing:

Please tell me Indiana is so :cursing: dumb they still don't have a helmet law!??!!?!?!?

Today's Emily Update:

Yesterday was ten weeks. We had our meeting yesterday and found out we only have a 1 1/2 weeks left. Everyone said how great she is doing. It's amazing how great Emily can do in a week. Thank you all for praying because it's working and please don't stop. Emily has moved up from pureed food to finely chopped food. As her chewing gets better she should move up to regular food soon. Emily's room is not finished yet, but our church family is planning a work day at our house Saturday to help Keith finish her room. Before we go home, they want to do another swallow study and CAT scan to check her healing. Also before they let Emily go home they want to fine a place where Emily can have her therapy that is familar with brain trauma.
Thank you thank you thank you for all your prayers. Please continue to pray for Emily's overall healing and her short term memory.
God Bless you all!

Thank you, and thanks to everyone else who has prayed and/or kept her in their thoughts.

More good news, my wife was asked to be her private teacher until she gets caught back up to where she's supposed to be. She (and my daughter, naturally) is very excited about this, but such situations can also be pretty stressful when dealing with friends in such a role.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I did it! I fixed my motorcycle. I called the mechanic and he told me what to do and assured me it was something I could handle. As a back up plan, I set up a tentative appointment to bring her in. So, today I tear her apart, again. I put it back together and still a problem. Suddenly, I discovered an adjustment screw that needed adjusted. After taking the front end of that bike apart about six times, I discover it is a screw that can be adjusted without taking a single thing apart. How frustrating.

But, it matters not because she is ready for my weekend off. I tell you, any time she sits in the garage for a few days, she comes out purring like a kitten! I rode for a twenty five mile test ride and everything was perfect!

Don't let it be frustrating unless you broke something while dis- and re-assembling the brakes. You learned how to take apart the brakes and then put them back together without losing any parts, dude! This is NOT useless information for you to have. I did something similar trying to replace a headlamp once. Turned out I was working over the 3" long lamp angle adjustment screw instead of doing the simple quarter-turn necessary to remove the bulb. By the time I figured everything out and plugged the new bulb in, the headlamp was pretty well aimed at the ceiling. :001_tongu

It was Blake's fault. He said the rows of vases on either side of the main court were urinals... honest.

Checking in. Today is a better day. Nothing was horrible, just little annoyances that were stacking up, like I forgot some things at the store, some workmen (not mine) were annoying the :censored: out of me, my tea order will be late, the fabric for Li'l Crafty's present did not come when it was supposed to so he won't have his gift on time (TODAY! :mad3:), and so forth. Just little things.

On the up side, today is Tiny Crafty's birthday! He's a whopping 3 years old today. I would say he's my little sunshine, but at the moment he and his brother won't stop fighting, so...

:a30: :a3: :a6: :a19:

I love them, anyway.

:lol::lol:

Thanks for sharing that with us! I'm glad she is doing better.

Don't let it be frustrating unless you broke something while dis- and re-assembling the brakes. You learned how to take apart the brakes and then put them back together without losing any parts, dude! This is NOT useless information for you to have. Bonus: now you know where that pesky adjustment screw is.

I figured out how to take more than the brakes apart too. I had the axle, speedometer box, and calipers apart. I did do a lot more than necessary. But, as you said, I learned a lot.

:001_tongu

Enjoy your weekend!

:lol::lol:

So...

I was decorating the cake. The kids started going around me and grabbing at the frosting and icing, and I'm yelling at them to get away from it while I'm trying to put the Superman sign on the top. As I'm trying to do all this, the top of the icing bag tips over, dumping RED icing all over the WHITE frosted cake. Now it looks like Superman died while standing over the cake. Awesomesauce. But, they'll eat it anyway because it is loaded with sugar.

Poor Rob. :nonod:

It was Blake's fault. He said the rows of vases on either side of the main court were urinals... honest.

That may be. That whole night is a little fuzzy. :blushing:

honestly, it has brought the whole town together in a huge way...I know that as the "sensationalism" of it settles down, some things will go back the way they were, but I sincerely hope that much of the closeness continues.
Kinda like after 9/11 it seemed the whole country really came together, but not many months after it was "business as usual"....I pray that doesn't happen here

As I've said -- a bicycle helmet probably saved me from death or traumatic brain injury. I'd vote for such a law, though I'm also a Darwinist. . .

Q: You know what they call motorcyclists who don't wear a helmet?

A: Organ donors.

+1 I always wore a helmet whether I was riding on dirt or street, city roads or country roads. There are just too many variables and I think its horrible arrogant to think you are a such a great rider that you'll never crash.

I see both sides too. Personally, I prefer to wear one, especially in town.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I'm glad to hear you are a helmet guy!

Grammar, people!

This reminds me. Gather around, it is story time. Not a good one, but, oh well.

At an officer's meeting, the manager asked for a volunteer to be responsible for reading all reports written by our department. This includes three facilities and about fifty officers. I volunteered because I thought it would be something to do when I am posted in the lobby. There is absolutely nothing for us to do up there otherwise. I know I write the best reports there also. I have been told this since I was hired. Too many people try to do a half a**ed job.

I had no idea what I was getting into. I have anywhere from twenty to a hundred reports to review each day. Also, I had no idea that our officers were so illiterate! In addition, many had not even been completely trained in how to use the program. So, I send a report every day of Incident Reports that need corrected.

I started out just making sure all portions were filled out and spelling was correct. Once I got officers getting decent at that, I focused on punctuation, and etc. I have currently moved to spacing. All I ask is that a space be place after a period and comma, not before.

Well, needless to say, egos have been bruised and I am rather unpopular among many. Our North facility were not using anything but the Face page and Narrative when I started. There are Persons, Responses, Vehicles, etc that they were not using. Therefore, we had no idea how many times a single person could been thrown out, for example.

Well, last week, I got an email from a North officer. He was respectful, but his anger still came through quite clear. He also blind copied my manager and director. He claimed I was nit picking. He said he had been writing reports for two years and was never told to fill out these "extra" pages. Why did he have to write the same information on another page that was already in the Narrative. He couldn't even find what I was trying to tell him to do on some. He also quoted an email I sent to my manager. This was a private email that was forwarded to Captains only. Lts and Sgts didn't even get this. Yet, he was quoting it. I was saying how I was focusing on spacing at the moment. He said he asked his Captain if I was kidding and don't I think this is a little obsessive. At the end, he posted a PS to my director pointing out there should be two spaces after a period, not one.

So, I could not pass this up. I responded with one hell of a punch to the gut, but equally respectful. I pointed out that when we fail to advance and learn, we become useless and obsolete. I pointed out a case where one of these "nit picking" mistakes got a case thrown out and cost a lot of money. I said our reports put people in prison and determine if the hospital will lose a lawsuit. One of mine actually put a man in prison for ten years. I explained the importance of the "extra" pages. I pointed out that his not knowing how to do this was a break down in the training he received. This was a dig at his Captain. His comment and quote told me his Captain agreed with him too. So, I said at one point, "as your Captain probably told you" since he would have if he was doing his job correctly.

My favourite part was the PS. This was obviously an attempt to make me look like I didn't know what I was doing to my Director. So, I explained how this was a matter of controversy. I pointed out how MLA and APA rules disagreed on this issue. I explained how the reason for the double space was the period did not show up often times when using typewriters. Now they are a thing of the past, it was a moot point. I added the double space was not for periods but the end of a sentence. I stated I did double space mine but felt I could not demand that of everyone. There are a lot of things I would like to see done differently but I can not make others use my style to write reports.

I sent this to the Director, Manager, his Captain, and him.

He had nothing to say. He thanked me for the clarification and said he would try to do better. Then a few days later, we received a response from the Manager. It was a 100% support. He said it was the best explanation he had ever seen. He stated Corporate has already noticed a difference in the few short months I have done this. He also stated this made him realize that the North facility need further training in this area, which I told him a month ago.

So, not only did this officer get shot down in a blaze, he has brought down heat on his entire facility. I love it! I am going to volunteer to put together the training for this.

Looks like Rob's in that slot, which is just fine by me. What we need now, I figure, is a TAT league to give Doug, Jim (that's right Jim, I've decided you're in ), myself, and whomever else (Blake, Rob, and John can be part of both!) a chance to join in on the fun. Any takers???

:confused1 :confused1 There are still only 11 teams signed up. We need at least one more (The Gruderians possibly? :w00t:).

Blake, Rob and I are in (Blackfoot Braves, The Last Sons and Mighty Mallards). If more than 12 people total want to play, then the plan is to split into two B&B leagues... or a separate TAT league is doable. It would be nice to have Doug and Jim and other TATers play... whatever you guys decide is good :001_smile

The League, so far:

Rob mentioned that he'd be the last team in that thread, so I don't want to step on his toes. Plus, a TAT league sounds like fun, so if that's doable, I'm all for it. I sent a quick PM to Doug to get his thoughts. I'm not averse to setting up a league, but Doug did such an awesome job last year, and knows far more about the whole thing than I.

I shall endeavor to service you. If I can spare a few moments tomorrow, I'll set one up. How many players? Do we want live draft? (yes, please). If so, any particular times of day better for you?

I've been so caught up in various projects and family business I hadn't even stopped to think about football coming up on the horizon. Obviously, we still have plenty of time. I like to draft around late August so that the NFL is as up to date as possible. Nothing like taking a fellar with your first pick and he gets injured for the season in preseason. It's happened to me before and it S-U-C-K-S!

I'll check on you all tomorrow...
