Okay, my brief interruption with a serious post. We had a fourteen year old girl hang herself and we were not able to save her. Everyone kept asking, "What is so bad in a fourteen year old's life that she had to kill herself?"
AM I the only one that remembers that age? It is pure hell! You are going through so many changes physically, mentally, and emotionally. Plus, you are seeing the world around you in a completely new light. You are learning what the world is really about and trying to figure out what your place is in it. Adults seem to be conspiring against you to make your life miserable. Teenage social dynamics are a horrible, brutal, and difficult thing to keep grips on. Kids are so cruel. Boyfriends and friendships among peers seems to be the most important thing in the world and the only thing you can rely on. Yet, as adults, we know how very unreliable these things can be, especially at that age. The world of teenagers is a vicious jungle; eat or be eaten.
In addition to all of this, you do not have the proper coping skills yet. These come as part of the changes and with time and experience. There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. This world I describe is all you know and can foresee. You can't really trust adults because they don't seem to understand. Most try to trust friends, bet they are in the exact same boat as you.
One of the officers at work was taking it a little hard and thinking about his own kids. My advice to him and all of you, keep your kids talking. That is the key. That is the looking glass into their soul. That is where you will see the signs. Be there for them, no matter what they have to say. The moment they stop talking, the battle is out of your hands.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled frivolities.

As far as the roller coaster goes, such is life. I really like the quote, "“We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” I may not be on the front lines like Rob and our other vets, and I am not a police officer. Yet, I can't help but feel that firefighters, EMS, ER staff, and people that do jobs like mine are a small part of that group. Those of us that can handle it, deal with things that most would rather not know about. Not everyone is cut out for those jobs. Those that are..well....
As for the serious issues, I don't mention a lot of my work. Some of that is for legal reasons, obviously. Some of it is for the reason above, people do not need nor want to know about some things. However, some things really bother me and some things I think people need to think about. This was more the latter.
The funny thing is (I don't think that is the best choice of words but I don't now what is.), the part that bothered me the most was everyone's reaction to it. I mean, yes, it was a terrible tragedy. She was a beautiful young lady and had the world ahead of her. The fact she consciously did this to herself is all the worse. However, as I mentioned, people seem to have forgotten what it was like. They say, if you have been out of school a few years, you have no idea what it is like these days because it is getting worse and worse with each class. It is no wonder teenagers think their parents don't have a clue.
Yikes indeed.

This happens a great deal in history. Kind of like the origins of the term "Cup of Joe" or even one of my favorite quotes of all time, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." Both are contested/debated as to their origins and the second is debated if it was ever even said at all.

What a horrible tragedy. I'm sorry you had to deal with this. Any life lost is a miserable tragedy. That said, I agree with any who say, "What is so bad in a fourteen year old's life that she had to kill herself?" There are dozens of Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Marines who commit suicide every year. Some at home but many in the combat zones. They deal with way more than a fourteen year old could/would ever encounter and everytime one of these young people take their own lives I say the same thing, "What is so bad in a person's life that he/she had to kill him/herself?" I'm a firm believer that God doesn't challenge us with any more than we can handle. I hope that doesn't sound cold. I remember Jr. High and High School and there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING going on then/there that could possibly warrant one taking their own life.

The difference between a teenager and an adult? Adults have learned to deal with this, they are dealing with mostly external changes not internal, they have matured and have the gift of experience to help guide them. It is a proven fact that you do not have a fully developed ability to make good decisions until later in life. You have to grow up and learn to analyze information and draw reasonable conclusions.

I think you have a better idea about child psychology than most professionals and parents. Sadly. My most recent 5 year stint, and probably final one at that, at teaching allowed me to work with that age group almost exclusively. I enjoyed it, yet disturbed that kids now hitting that time of their lives are finding it more brutal than ever before. Even the kids from 'good' families admit that communication in their families is next to nonexistent.
It broke my heart to discover that 14 year old girls and boys would talk to me more than their parents. The only thing I did that others would not do is listen. They simply want someone to listen to them. They don't want you to be their buddies, BFFs or act like them. They just want you to listen to them talk....talk about their struggles, their drama, their dreams, their hopes, their crushes, and their wants. Just close your mouth, and let them talk and listen. They know if you are listening or not, and will resent it even more when you do not listen.
Of course, having a junior high sense of humor helped a lot.

Yet, I can't help but feel that firefighters, EMS, ER staff, and people that do jobs like mine are a small part of that group. Those of us that can handle it, deal with things that most would rather not know about. Not everyone is cut out for those jobs. Those that are..well....

Turmeric (the main spice in yellow curry) is supposed to be good for problem skin and when taken internally is a natural COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitor (2 of the enzymes involved in pain due to inflamation) and is being recommended by some docs for arthritis esp. for those having been on V I O X X and other such things.

At one point I tested at "high intermediate" but that was a long time ago and I get very little practice. Most of the native speakers I run into are "of an age" that they speak only 60+ year old dialect and not proper Italian. (not to sound snobbish, but many of the Italian dialects are like totally different languages when compared to "text book" Italian.)

The amount of turmeric you have to take to benefit your joints is huge, I think? As for problem skin...well, I can't wait to hear your results. I haven't seen Vicco in a while, but I would expect beyboo could get you some if you don't find some immediately.

Very similar experience, except that Dantean Italian is a bit more understandable (to an educated Italian, not having studied Dante, if such a thing is possible. lol) than say, Old English would be to an educated Non-Beowulf reading English speaker. Dante, being considered the Father of Italian still is interesting to study in the original. Dantean Italian shows a heavy Latin influence, no surprise, but is still intelligible without much problem in modern times.

As far as joints go, I must disagree somewhat. I've had very good results with 3 or 4 caps / day as needed (along with ginger and boswellia ). (I have chondromylasia (sp?) in one knee.) Tho, I still do need the occasional advil dose. and the effects of the turmeric/ginger/boswellia are not cumulative/ wear off after a few hours (at least for me). But, tests are showing that these are much safer than the prescription drugs such as V I O X X and yet work the same way.

Bummer. Sorry to hear that. That is a parent's worst nightmare. One of my neighbor's children did that and it really got us talking, as my kids were the same age at the time. I was especially affected as my son's mother made several of her own attempts only a year or so earlier. The life of a teenager always seems much more unendurable to the teen. We need to be the beacons to show the way.

Very interesting. Might be something I need to look into further for my knee. I am firm believer that if there is a natural alternative, then it is far better on one's body and has fewer side effects.
Also, be sure to get your fish oils. MSM is also very helpful as it contains sulfer which is good for cartilage. (I've tried chondoritin (sp) and glucosamine and all I got was GI troubles for my effort.)

How do people not get that? Life as teen if you don't have the right clothes or come from the right family can be hell. When the kids at school were cruel to me (without any reason, mind you), I told my mom, and she just said, "Ignore them. They're jealous." That's all I got. Doesn't anyone remember what it was like at that age? How serious and everlasting everything was?

That would be really cool. (I took six years of Italian in school and read all of the Commedia, some of it in Italian.)
I don't know about cool, but you sure are sounding geekier...
At one point I tested at "high intermediate" but that was a long time ago and I get very little practice. Most of the native speakers I run into are "of an age" that they speak only 60+ year old dialect and not proper Italian. (not to sound snobbish, but many of the Italian dialects are like totally different languages when compared to "text book" Italian.)
... and geekier...
Dantean Italian shows a heavy Latin influence, no surprise, but is still intelligible without much problem in modern times.
... and geekier... :001_rolle

Speaking of herring juice, I usually take 3 Triple Omega 3-6-9 softgels a day, but am considering purchasing a bottle of Carlsons Fish Oil (http://www.amazon.com/Carlson-Finest-Liquid-500-ml-Bottle/dp/B003BVIAZ2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1279245744&sr=1-4). What fish oil do you like?

Since I "low carb," I take up to 8g a day (1000mg capsules) of just omega 3s. Brands don't matter too much to me since I only very rarely get "repeats." But, some good prices can be had at the "big box" stores like Costco (my current brand). The important thing to look for is "molecularly distilled" which is a method of processing which ensures that it's heavy metal, solvent, pesticide, etc. free. If you get the "fish burps" there are entericly coated versions available and others that are dusted with mint or some such. Most stuff I've read recommend a minimum of 3g/day. More if you don't eat much fish.
Somewhere aroudn the web there's a calculator to determine how much fish oil is recommended base on your size and other factors. I take a lot as I low carb (oil is a healthy source of calories), other omega 3 benefits, and I figure it's at least X amount of guaranteed good fat in my diet (32g of fat is the US RDA).

Yeah? I have chondromalacia in both knees due to alignment issues and lots of running and biking. I'm thinking about swimming. But interesting results, Rich. I'll give it a look.

I've got the glucosamine and chondroitin caplets, and they do seem to help some.

You'll recall that not only did I warn you about this, I tried to steer you away from Macs just to make sure you actually wanted/needed a Mac.
Welcome. Gabba gabba "One of us (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0022913/)".
I can hear Mrs. Soapbox now -- "if it makes his skin itchy, I won't put it on him." Ergo, I'd rather he wore such a nice gift, so if it's cotton, or acrylic, or merino wool, or some other non-itchy yarn, that would be great!
Wow, good to know!
Shucks, it's just the jealousy talking. It's a fun picture!
They offer a "Bayberry" scented soap (fragrance oil, not essential oil), and have occasionally done short runs of EO scents for church bazaars, etc. Bayberry was originally a once-a-year-at-Christmas run, but it became popular enough that it's a year-round offering now.
Noted.
Of course it's non-itchy, you silly, silly person. I wouldn't give SBjr such a thing. Fisherman's wool means that they have left some of the lanolin in it to give it some water resistance to make fisherman sweaters. It's what I used to make soakers (diaper covers) for tiny crafty out of. It's acrylic that I wouldn't give you.

Well, yes... but I thought you were trying to protect me from buyer's remorse, not total addiction.

Ah! I see. I learned something today (er, something unrelated to Javascript, Perl, CGI, and encryption). Well, In that case, I'm sure a cream color would be just fine. Thanks!

The biggest buyer's remorse an Apple fan has is this: seemingly within four weeks of making your purchase, Uncle Steve releases a better model for $100 less or $100 more. That seems to have happened for my last couple of major Mac purchases (that I paid for myself -- the MacBook Pro purchased by my employer was top-of-the-line for six months or so!).

Or like the snake handler that married the mortician? They got a "hiss and hearse" set.

Isn't that par for the course in the whole industry?
One feature that I really like is the backlit keyboard. My wife just takes it for granted as she uses it while I'm driving at night and doesn't even realize that most computers don't do that.

I knew a guy that bought an old cadillac hearse. He cut the top off and converted it to a pop up camper. :thumbup1:

I'd rather paint it white and add atomic accessories.

No. The Superman cape. He's really into Superman right now.
Sorry, I was confused.
I've got some hemlock that'll cure all that ails you...
I bet you do. :glare:

I see nothing.
But, seriously, it's a great way to reclaim/get new life out of older equip. You'll be surprised at how much faster (and better) equipment runs under linux that windoz either struggles with or just laughs at.
I can confirm that.

When you and Blake split a twelve pack and start posting, call me -- I'll start the popcorn.
I can confirm that.
Me too -- Linux makes very old hardware usable again, with a caveat on playing video -- You're just not gonna get Flash or High-Def video to play on that 733 MHz Celeron. But if you want a secondary machine that's five years old and starting to flag under the weight of Windows... Heck yeah.

I have 2.60GHz Pentium 4, so the vid quality is actually better than it was under Windows.

I take glucosamine and chondroitin, fish oil, MSM, turmeric, calcium, magnesium and a multi. vit. They seem to help. :001_smile
I haven't tried hemlock yet.:
Yeah, hemlock worked wonders for Socrates. :001_rolle

But it's nice and quiet right now! Don't get him started.

You mean like the new iPhone with new and improved reception? Oh wait, I think we can scratch that off the list.
