Wildwood flower grew wild on the farm
And we never knowed what it was called
Some said it was a flower and some said it was a weed
I didn't give it much thought
One day I was out there talkin' to my brother
And I reached down for a weed to chew on
Things got fuzzy and things got blurry
And then ev'rything was gone
Didn't know what happened but I knew it beat the hell
Out of sniffing burlap

Nah, not lazy. My in-laws arrived yesterday so I didn't want to spend too much time online.

I am assigned to proofread all reports written by all officers at the different facilities. Let me tell you, no one seems to know anything about its guiding light. :cursing:

Well, I am quite proud of myself. It took me several hours, but I completed a chart (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Safety_Razor_Database#Organized_by_Year_of_Product ion) that organizes Injectors by the year of production. This was, by far, the most complicated thing I have done in the Wiki. It amazes me how much work went into something that looks so simple.

Excellent! :thumbup1:

I come to and my brother was there and he said,
"What's wrong with your eyes?"
I said "I don't know, I was chewin' on the weed"
He said, "Let me give it a try"
We spent the rest of that day and most of that night tryin'
To find my brother Bill [Blake's name was changed here to protect his innocent brother, Skklog]
Caught up with him about six o'clock the next mornin'

I had to fly up and get him down

All good things got to come to an end
It's the same with the wildwood weeds
One day this feller from Washington come by
And spied one and turned white as a sheet
And they dug and they burned
And they burned and they dug and they killed
All our cute little weeds and then they drove away
We just smiled and waved sittin' ther on that sack o' seeds

Mrs Blackfoot and I rode the motorcycle to Outback for dinner. It was delicious and we hadn't been there for a long time. We suddenly noticed everyone looking out the window. When I looked to see, the trees were blowing everywhere! A wall of black cloud rolled in. It was the weirdest storm I had seen since the one I got caught in a few miles offshore in Lake Erie. We had just paid and deemed it a wise time to take our leave. As so many times in the past, we only had my one rain suit. I told her to put it on, but she wanted me to. I looked around at the clouds and got a sneaky suspicion. She was confused as to why, but I didn't wan to take the time for the suit. We hopped on and took off. I hit it hard and she held on tight. Normally she would have yelled at me, but she could apparently tell I knew something she didn't. I drove two blocks and had to slow down for a light. That was when my suspicion was confirmed. I could hear the tornado siren blaring away. I punched it a little hard, but you can't take a bike too fast when being pounded by rain. There are only two tires for traction. That is not enough in that! The hail was what was the worst. I told her she was going to have to stop riding with me. That is the third time recently I have got caught in a storm with her, the second to get hit with hail. :thumbdown

I didn't even think to. It looked so nice out. Like I said, that moved in crazy fast like a wall. There were a bunch of low clouds that were moving faster than I had ever seen clouds move before. It was actually a little scary. I would have loved to watch it, but trying to keep a bike on the rode, more importantly, with my wife on it, was a little nerve racking.

It is funny, life-threatening experiences don't get me worked up as much as most. That is why I am good at the things I do. I stay calm under extreme pressure pretty well. But, when someone else's life is directly in my hands, it makes me stop and think more about what mess I am in. It definitely makes things more scary. For example, that storm on Lake Erie. The whole time I kept thinking, I knew I would survive. But, I had a woman, my wife's best friend, to get back alive too. I couldn't walk up alone. She had to make it. It changes things.

Whenever Mrs. Soapbox's parents come to town, yes, I stay busy most of the time, picking up slack and trying to knock things off the to-do list while someone is here to play with the kids. Whenever Mom and Dad come to town, they stay as busy as possible helping out. The last time they were here, Dad and I built a set of 8'x8'x2' shelves in the garage (plans here (http://woodgears.ca/storage/shelf_plans/index.html)), except we anchored the shelves to the wall studs (unlike the plans) and probably spent too much time getting things plumb, flat, square, and level.

GMS #22 (unscented) should arrive today, and the soap extruder (plodder) and a mill arrived at GMSC HQ on Thursday. Still much to do before it can be brought online, including building/installing a refrigeration system (which gives no end of delight to Col. Soapbox, the former thermodynamics professor and professional engineer :001_cool:), and getting their old house on the market.

I'm expecting something more mundane like chilled saltwater.* But hopefully, designing and building a custom refrigeration unit from scratch should be geeky enough.

At the risk of opening up a ginormous can of worms, what's so great about Linux?

It's:

free
not a microsoft product
bug fixes and updates are released much much faster
no linux viruses or trojans in the wild
security is much much better
it's open source
no blue screen of death
no need to reboot every time you update something
no spontaneous OS crashes
It can run a 20-core/12 display set up without breaking a sweat (ask soapbox).

shall I go on?

Oh no! I'm becoming intrigued. Is this going to spawn another hobby which ultimately ostracizes me from the majority of the human race!?

Another good reason to read the Linux Mint thread. Besides, it is only just a little over 10K posts. After reading the first 800 or so I was hooked and tried several distros before settling on Ubuntu.

OldSaw
06-19-2010, 05:05 PM
I wouldn't call Linux a hobby. It's more of a deliberate choice, one with costs and benefits.

I'm an old-line Mac guy -- user since 1986, Apple user since 1981. I really like Mac OS X, and Macs comprise the bulk of my computers, but I use, like, and prefer Linux for several applications. Not to mention, as Rich said, I use it at work to do really neat stuff.

Linux users have reputations -- deserved, mostly -- of being geeky, counter-cultural, a bit snobbish, rabidly anti-Microsoft, just plain rabid, and possessed of odd sense of humor. So, hey, I fit right in, except I'm less counter-cultural than many, and I use several OSes.

BUT, Linux is ready for prime time. It's a fine Desktop OS, which was not the case a few years ago. There are fewer and fewer things you can't do with Linux, and most of them are no longer of consequence for the average user. You want .NET? There's Mono. Flash? no problem. Java? at least three implementations exist for Linux. Office? Pfft, OpenOffice is better than MS Office for most tasks, and it completely supports MS Office file formats. Photoshop? Use the GIMP. And the list goes on.

Best of all, you can try Linux (Ubuntu, for instance) while making no changes to your computer, via a LiveCD. All of the OS can run from the CD/DVD so you can try it out. Free.

Linux is worth a look for everyday users now. I'm glad to see it.

Most Linux discussions and tech support take place in the nearly-as-epic-as-The-Anything-Thread Linux Mint thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=33972).

The number one thing that Linux can't do for me is run Autocad. Aside from that one flaw it is pretty useful. I have another computer for cad and I don't use it much these days anyway as I am not designing anything lately.

Andrew,

You can start with The Warden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Warden) by Anthony Trollope, because I want you to be thoroughly bored before you do anything else.

Does Jane Ayre fall into this category? Not that I've read it, but may have watched it on DVD with the Mrs.

I have, however, read the complete unabridged version of the Count of Monte Cristo recently. That's 117 chapters of entertainment. Mrs. OldSaw started reading it on my iPod when she was out on the road with me, then went to pick up a copy at Barnes & Noble and the 600 page book was the abridged version. She was ticked and returned it.

Brilliant minds think alike! While I don't have kids in need of being baby sat I know if I start projects while they are here, they will help so that will keep them busy.

The mind is never happier than when it is creating.

Good man! I take back at least one of the "not so favorable" things I have said about you. (But not the one about the Spandex peddle pushers)

:thumbdown

Dear God! I am gone for a few hours and there are six pages added. I have spent so much time on here lately and hardly anyone is posting. I leave and you guys go nuts!

I have been on my motorcycle all day. It has been fun. I met my wife for lunch and followed her to some garage sales and came home. I called dad and and got him to go for a ride with me. As usual, he took me to some insane road. We saw some really neat scenery and then he stopped. He informs me the last time he took the stretch of road we were about to, he couldn't make it and ran off the road. Then, he takes off. When we came out of the last switchback-like curve, he looked back to see if I was still there. He shook his hand in celebration when he saw I kept up. We, of course, had to turn around and do it again. :001_rolle We ended the ride at Mum and Dad's house. We left there and Mrs. Blackfoot met us in Fort Wayne for dinner. There, we were informed her brother, DrBob, was playing at a local bar so we went there. Afterwards, LOTH and I went to some 24 hour restaurant. She drove home and I took a scenic/long way home. I pulled up to the house at about 2:30 in the morning. It has been a fun day.

I wouldn't mind reading that. :thumbup1:

A combination of all of the above, plus the attempt to calculate Pi to a 1000 places while making a joke goes a long way.

Funny, that sounds like a good reason to stay as busy as possible. J/K

:thumbdown
How scary! I'm glad you and the Mrs. are OK!

Awww, you adorable romantic, you.

That is great. The mind is never happier than when it is creating.

I made a sundress yesterday.

Ponder this, non-lit/english majors: 600 pages=abridged. Shudder in horror.

Oh, yeah! Thanks. Actually, I realized there is no information about it in the Wiki. FTR, in jeans I wear a 40" waist and 32" inseam. Uniform pants are typically a 42".

Looks like I have a new project. My wife has wanted a sewing machine cabinet for a long time. She got one at a garage sale yesterday, but it won't work as is. So, I get to engineer something to make it work for her. Funny thing is, the sewing machine is essentially mine. I am the one that sews, not her. :001_rolle

It requires you to shine the boots of the Czar, or to borrow a phrase from the Marine Corps, become first class Boot Licker. Unless the Czar wants some Boot Liquor...

Whether tis nobler in the mind to quietly celebrate a posting milemark, or by making a big deal of it, end it. To post. To post, perchance to quote. And in that post of quotes what jokes may come. Ay, there's the rub." I guess I chose to celebrate and end my milemark just like that. Oh well.

Wait, did you just compliment me or insult me?

And here is how I made lather out of what Mr. Crafty deemed to be nothing:

I had already made lather with TOBS avocado, but in the course of things had run out. Added water, whipped, and voila, there is more. I did this several times. I was stoked that I could impress Mr. Crafty that much. I think the problem that he has is he just doesn't get enough on the brush. Of course, I'm shaving more area, so I put more cream on the brush, and there you go.

Feeling pretty confident in my shaving ability now. If I was feeling any more awesome, I'd write a leg shaving wiki.

Of course it probably helped that there was already a wetshaver in the house that could help, so the learning curve was less steep for me.
