Ladies and Gentlemen, I have one more night to work. Friday, I fly out to Myrtle Beach for three days. Skklog and Minxie are going with us. They have never flown before. Personally, I am glad. One, your first time flying is very nerve racking because everything is unknown, especially now days. Security is so strict and you have to have everything in order or you cause problems. It is scary. Not many people get to have someone to guide them through the process like this. I question whether he would have ever agreed to fly on his own. So, after this, hopefully he will be comfortable with it. Two, I want to see his face at take off. I love that moment! It is up in the air whether he will get a rush from it like me or cry like a baby.

Bring a camera so you can be proud, or gloat as the case may be, for years to come.

Airports in general make me very upset and nervous. I remember when the guys with big guns weren't out in the open where everyone could see them. On the upside, having small children, we get to get on the plane first. :001_smile

Excellent idea.

The first time I flew was not long after 9/11. Not knowing much, I was convinced they would lose my luggage (It happens in movies all the time.) so I thought, "What is the things I can't replace if they lose it?" Answer: my SCUBA gear. I could not afford to replace that. So, a change o clothes and my SCUBA gear got stuffed in a carry-on.

Now, pre-9/11, I had taken family to the airport on occasions. I, to this day, have never gotten through a check point in one pass for what ever reason. But, I had been extra careful. I thought I would make it this time.

As I was going trough the metal detector, of course, they had to stop and wand me for some reason. While the man was doing this, I looked over and saw my carry-on entering the X-ray machine. The look on the screener's face was priceless! It was at this moment the full realization of the flaw in my planning struck me. They drug me off to the side with my bag and opened it up. The officer unzipped, didn't touch a thing and says, "What are you, some kina frogmen or sumth'n?" He almost yelled it. He then zipped it back shut and sent me on my way without ever looking through it at all.

:lol::lol::lol: Fantastic. The worst I got was being patted down after going through the detector because I was wearing a sweatshirt. Although this one time when I was a teen, I was travelling alone. Already nervous as all get out, I, without thinking, set my ticket down on top of my carry-on as I went through the detector. When I got to the other side, I realized I no longer had my ticket. That is panic.

Nah! no flying spot scanner...... but it had tubes (no transistors yet) and a knob to tune in the channels.

Tubes... I remember scrounging through the Tubes at Two Guys for replacements so we could watch flickering black and white images on the screen.

Well, first they need to get boxes, soap stamps, the soap mill to go with the extruder (plodder), and, uh, a new website to replace that 1999 monstrosity written by a guy we don't talk to anymore, but yeah, I'd say by ... Football Season? Maybe sooner. Col. Soapbox and I have been discussing manufacturing processes over the last couple of days, but I have to learn how to use Pro/Engineer (CAD software) so I can design the soap stamp for them. So I'm the holdup.

(All this on top of my day job and being a new parent again!)

You're kidding, right? You are going to learn to use Pro/E just to design a stamp? That's like killing roaches with a cannon. I use it every day, but it is not exactly a quick learn.

I agree -- but the guys who make the stamps say that the Pro/E file format is the one format that never fails them. There's the added bonus that I would like to be acceptably fluent with it in my data visualization lab, so there's a push-pull to learn it.

I was sick today. Again. My fault this time. Too much sun, not enough water yesterday while doing yard work. Should've worn a hat, at least.

Have a fun trip, guys.

How is your foot doing by the way? I don't know what sounds more painful, the ingrown nail or some doctor whittling on it.

The whittling didn't hurt. They gave me enough anesthetic to kill a horse. It had got to the point that it was a constant nuisance.

It was today, going up some concrete steps, in running shoes, with the soft top, and making a slight miscalculation which resulted in said toenail being scraped with the overhang.:mad3:

I feel your pain. twenty+ years ago I had some material removed from my big toe because the ingrowns were so common and always infected that it was time for something more permanent. Cosmetically I didn't want the "root killer" treatment (some form of silver that actually kills the toenail), but this treatment worked fine. Haven't regretted it.

Only downside is that they're most often targets of opportunity (Dennis driving past Denton, Paul making a call nearby, Chris (theperfectstorm) gearing up for an antique mall marathon, me flying to some town for some reason, etc.

good evening

Evenin'

Well, at least I'm not "Sir Shaves-a-lot" anymore.

<groan>

I like it. Used my Rooney 3/1 Super yesterday and got lather that looks world-class, even on the third and fourth passes. Performed great, smelled great. In fact, for the first time, I could smell the "citrus/bay rum" scent all day; subtle but surprisingly durable.

Per your and Jim's findings that 19 and 20 worked best in a bowl-lather /face-lather superlather, the latest recipe is mostly a blend of the two of those. I haven't face lathered with #21 yet; I am still bowl lathering. Of course the lather from my $9 Omega boar (this morning) wasn't as good as the Rooney, but still good. I think the lather is a little slicker than 20, and it definitely lasts longer than 19. But after only two shaves, it's hard to say anything definitive, and -- well, YMMV (I haven't seen Ray in months, so it's safe to say "it" every now and then). And given that DFW has pretty hard water, I think the hard water performance is admirable. Dad even mentioned making a hard-water-specific version that included water softeners (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Water#Soap_Additives) like others do.

Getting soap off the puck--a common concern with most of the GMS soap betas--was a little easier, and 22 should be easier still, if my guess is right.

Naturally, feedback from the B&B gang keeps improving this soap, so my impressions--especially as I am a potentially biased source of information--shouldn't count for much. As such, I've been concerned about revealing my impressions of the soap for that reason. But, hey, you asked.

In other news, the extruder (plodder) for making shave sticks is on order, and the mill is apparently not far behind. And I learned how to use Pro/Engineer CAD software, so we can make a soap puck stamping die now.

*did you see the little period?

Enjoy!

Be sure and put a fresh DE blade in his carryon -- whether he's got a razor in it or not.

Excellent!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Also, occasionally as TATers spawn/inhabit/overtake threads that become outposts of the New Anything Thread, the Mods will occasionally fold them into this main "trunk", which would make reading all 35000+ posts occasionally very (okay, more) confusing since the already disjointed narratives of conversation would be interspersed with conversations from the OTHER threads.

To wit: reading all 35000+ posts is a Bad Idea. The most important thing is that the current denizens of the thread are a welcoming bunch. A silly, erudite, multifaceted, and (when skklog is here) even a touch insane, but welcoming.

I don't mean to butt in, but what on earth is this thread about? I suppose I could read the whole thing to find out, but 35,000 posts is just a touch intimidating.

Absofreakinlutely not a darn thing!

Correction, 35,841 posts is intimidating. 35,000 wouldn't be all that bad.

Just jump right in!

Socialize, mostly. Occasional shaving questions, humor, minor tech support (most of the heavy-duty tech support occurs in the Linux Mint thread), and advice. But mostly socializing.

Oh, you'll fit in fine.

:yesnod:

:001_smile As its' name says anything. Don't try to read the whole thing just follow along. It's kind of like a favorite swimming hole. When you feel like it, jump in the waters fine. :w00t:

:lol::lol:

Yup, that's it!

Excellent summary...

Hmmmm.... Well....

The Legend of Limecat
The Mythology of the Czardom
Occasional baby pictures
Socializing & chops busting
and well... ANYTHING.

...even better!

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a pretty good place to be, especially for such erudite, intrepid, and indefatigable individuals as you all seem to be. One of these days I'll have to figure out all this Czar of cheddar-ville stuff.

Okay, here goes:

It is a law of science that I cannot pass through airport security. So, we were not surprised when my check in bag got stopped at the scanner. He signaled for another officer and set my bag aside. My wife said why is it always you? and left me behind.

They take my bag and I aside and open it up. I knew right away what the problem was. I had a professional grade tripod for my camera in there. No problem! Wrong, While there, he decided to look through the rest of the bag. I had forgot to take my liquids out, but the didn't say much bout that. I had thrown my car keys in there and he found those. Problem! Apparently, you cannot take a bullet on an airplane. Who knew? :001_rolle

I had a .45 bullet key chain that my dad carried as long as I can remember. When I got my first car, he gave it to me. I have had it ever since. I was not going to give it up. So, my dear wife volunteered to run it back to the car. I would have, but odds are I would run into more trouble if I tried to get back through security.

Klog, Minxie and I took the bags and proceeded to the gate. I got the seated and decided I would be nice and wait for Mrs. Blackfoot at the checkpoint. After all, the gate was the furthest one away. That way she wouldn't have to walk alone. As I wait, I hear my name called overhead. It requested I report to the Checkpoint with my wife's boarding pass. We accidentally had each other's. I walk clear back to the other end of the terminal, retrieve her boarding pass from my bag, and walk clear back. By this time, they had paged a second time and sounded more forceful. TSA had been very kind and understanding thus far, but I feared we I was wearing thin on their patience.

I returned and gave it to the officer who took it to her. She got through and we found my brother and Sis. I sat down and said, "Aren't you glad we were here to show you how to get through all of this quickly and smoothly?" We laughed pretty hard.

The other little problem we had was our check in bags, the ones we have flown with to Europe twice and several other flights, were slightly too big. My wife took it and jammed the one in so hard she couldn't get it out. It took three people to get it back out of that stupid frame. There was an entire line of people laughing at her. The lady at the ticket counter was laughing too. She must have felt sorry for us and let us check them without charging for it.

So, we spent the afternoon on the beach. My wife lost my $90 scuba mask. I had bought it specifically for working with the Search and Rescue dive team and it had LED lights along the top. Won't be able to afford to replace that anytime soon. :thumbdown We had a delicious dinner at a bar on the boardwalk and drank a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea. We are bedding down now. In fact, they are all in bed already. I guess I better follow. I have only slept fiver hours in the last three days, so I am getting tired. See you all later!

It's true. Now you'll have a whole gaggle of my cronies chattering about all sorts of nonsense in your thread...wait, I don't have cronies.

Well, we had our meet-up today. Klog and I were just talking about this. Ray was pretty much exactly what we expected. He is as amusing and funny in person as on-line. A gentlemen through and through. Adam surprised us.* First of all, his pants were dry. Otherwise, I can't pinpoint why. Jape expected someone more backwoods. Not as a insult, there is a difference between good ol boy and hillbilly. But Adam was neither. We discovered My brother and him are both gear heads and they went into their own conversation for some time. Ray and I were glazed over.

We had a good time. We watched some chick in a bikini get arrested. No idea why. We have seen several people in bracelets around here. It is like watching an episode of cops. :w00t: One thing we were all impressed with, we never heard one curse word the entire time. That says a lot about the class of people we hang out with here. :thumbup1:

Oh, just looking forward to a relaxing day at home with my family--not. I've got the perennial honey-do list that's a mile long and, of course, cannot all be completed in one weekend. Most important is probably one pre-emptive plumbing repair and one fix on the irrigation system that I didn't quite prevent last winter.

I feel your pain. My inlaws are flying in from the States this week so my honey-do list is insane.

That's what she said.:001_rolle

Not likely. Blake's misadventures still didn't (at least not yet) involve a "thorough search" or crossing an international boarder.

No, he did quite well. The biggest problem was we were in the back row. Klogs window looked at an engine and I was behind him with no window. This also meant it was loud. :glare:

I hate sitting behind the engines.

Update

Okay, now the story of three little brushes. When I saw the B&B 2009LE I fell in love. :001_wub: I showed the pictures of them to my husband and told him I was ordering an ebony and he said lets order two of them, so we did. :001_smile But I kept looking at the butterscotch and thinking that sure was a pretty brush. So I ordered one of those too. :blushing: I told my oldest son (who got me started on this whole DE thing in the first place) that he could have one of the ebony ones for his birthday.

Fast forward and the butterscotch was delivered on Sat. What a beauty! :w00t: My husband tried it out this weekend and really liked it. :001_smile Today the two ebony were scheduled for delivery and when I got home from work there sat the box on the counter. :w00t: I opened it and there was an ebony brush :w00t:......... but only one ebony brush.
Where oh where is my other ebony brush. :confused1
I can't use the ebony that came or ship it to my son until I get this straightened out with Nick (which I'm sure I will). But I know how terribly busy he is right now:sad:..........so for now all I can do is look at my little ebony brush and sigh....:001_wub: :crying:

PS I sent a reply on the order complete email I got from B&B explaining the problem. But does any one know if this is a good way to contact them. I know Nick is getting overwhelmed with all the email he's getting. On the one hand I don't want to be a pest but on the other I want to make sure he is aware there's a problem.

Sorry to hear about the brush issue. Go ahead and send Nick a PM.

One ping only, please.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/640000/images/_642286_seanred150.jpg

So I pinged Nick and he got right back with me. :001_smile He said he would ship the ebony brush out to me that weekend (6/5/10) or earlier if I needed it for something special. The weekends fine says I. Then silence........ no shipping notice shows up in my email like I got with my other brushes. All is vwery, vwery quwiet...... Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday still vwery quwiet :a36: ....... Saturday night I'm taking a shower when I hear the dogs going nuts barking. When I get out of the shower I ask my husband what all the barking was about and he says there was a delivery. There in my chair was a package delivered by FedEx at 9:30 on a Saturday night.

My ebony LE B&B brush had come home. :w00t:

Surprise, surprise, Blake actually wore pants the entire time. I was really shocked, considering how much time he spends posting on B&B pantless. As hot as it was I expected at anytime for him to go wild.

Adam, OTOH, never peed the whole time. Matter of fact, according to the Grand Strand Rumor Mill, Adam hasn't peed in two months. The last time he held out this long, there was an unusually HIGH tide. I'm not sure if there is any truth to this or not.

Seriously. And congrats for getting it done during naptime! That's quite an accomplishment. We had a pipe in the wall of the kitchen degrade and leak like crazy. We had a plumber come in, who had to get to it from the outside, which meant taking out the cinderblocks, fixing the pipe, and re-masoning the wall. Awesomeness. Now we that we have reseeded the lawn, we are repairing the track to a sliding door and looking at hurricane shutters. And we (and by we, I of course mean Mr. Crafty for this part) just replaced a bunch of sprinkler heads.

Happy birthday to mini-soapbox!

Hey, look! Five dollars!

Time to drink some tea and run the sprinklers. Also more gardening research. Maybe I'll make lotion today.

One more thing about our meeting....

Blake, Skkloh and Mrs Blake & Mrs Skklog, have a safe trip back home today, and don't look out on the wing.....

:lol::lol::lol:

I was waiting on the pants thing to come up. In fact, I haven't wore shorts since I got here. I wore them down, but wore my comfy, cool linen pants the rest of the time. Well, we are packing up and about to check out. We are renting a car for the afternoon, since we have six hours from checkout and when we need to be at the airport. See you guys later. :thumbup1:

Plumbing update: so yesterday I had to replace a cracked shutoff valve (that froze last winter, since the contractor installed them two feet above ground) that controls the lawn irrigation system. Mission accomplished during naptime! All my 1" copper tube solder joints are beautiful, except for the last one, for which I could have really used a mandrel to bend the pipe to match the angle that the contractor-installed pipe was coming out of the ground. :thumbdown

Heck, I could have whacked the pipe against any of their 1970s hairdos and probably achieved just the right curvature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandrel);* copper -- even 1" copper -- is pretty soft.

Returned to the Ted-Pella-loaded E3 Injector this morning and GMS #21, face lathering. Got a very nice shave, and gosh it smells nice. I think I've got a place in my permanent rotation for an injector. I even went and bought a Chinese-made Schick Injector pack at the local Drug Emporium. I was definitely wrong to knock the injectors way back when. Suggestions for an "upgrade" injector that won't break the bank, or are they all mostly a "style" versus "design" question? (Anyone?)

Mom and Dad are moving into a smaller house yesterday/today/tomorrow, a few blocks from their current house, so it may delay the shipment of #21 and #22 until later this week.

I also forgot to mention a rather funny incident. While we were all talking. I noticed this young kid shamelessly flirting with Blake's wife. I mean, he was pulling every trick he knew. I mentioned to Blake that someone was flirting with his wife, he didn't seem to impressed, but I think his wife was. The boy would smile, giggle, and throw his head back and laugh. Howdy! :001_smile How's your arm and how is Emily doing?
arm is good, it's decastinated now, had first physical therapy session today, mostly measurements and some stretching and massage. still a little sore at extreme ranges, particularly rotating my wrist inward, but the PT was really impressed how much it's come along without any help so far.

Emily is doing soooooo good. We took the kids to see her Saturday, she's "awake", but not actually "awake", if that makes sense. She's responsive, moving (alot - the nurses have nicknamed her "Legs" because she kicks around alot), can see and hear and respond to commands and questions, but she's not fully out of the medicine yet.
There's still a long way to go, and some serious concerns, but she looks much better than the girl we visited 3 weeks ago.
Still need to pray for her vision and hearing, and neck, and rehab, but she is doing quite well.

Funny story - we took the kids to the Little Rock Zoo before going to see Emily, just to have a little something extra for the 3+ hour trip. They have camels and offer camel rides, but we didn't opt for it. When we got to the camels, my daughter asked if she could pet one, the guy said yes and brought one over. My daughter asked the camel's name, and believe it or not, he said Emily! We all had a good smile at the coincidence.

Well, today was an epic moment in history. That's right folks, I went through airport security without any snags! :thumbup1: We sent my carry-on bag with my parents, so all the stuff, like my tripod, was with them this time. I just had my camera backpack. How that ever gets through I will never know, considering all of the camera gear in it. I was wearing linen pants and shirt and sandals. All I had in my pockets was a wallet like thing I carry on vacation that holds ID, two cards, and incorporates a money clip. I also had a watch. I also had Skklog's kite. He likes to fly stunt kites and busted his on the beach yesterday. So, in our last time in Myrtle Beach, we went to some huge mall called Broadway On The Beach, IIRC. He replaced/upgraded to a new stunt kite. It didn't fit in his bag and since I only had one bag, I had to carry it. One of the TSA officers asked me what it was, but it was out of curiosity, not security. Of course, it took everything I had not to say, "My collapsible sniper rifle." That would have given you all the story you were waiting for for sure. The really funny thing is, I was a little disappointed at getting through so easily.

Our return flight was much better! We were in row seven, which is actually the third row. I don't get that. :001_huh: But, the view was great and it amazingly quieter.

A year and a half ago, just before I joined here, my wife worked in Grand Rapids for about seven months. It sucked! But, she came home on the weekends and I went up there on my days off, which were never weekends back then. I love that area and really want to move there. So, we got to show my brother where she worked and her apartment and took them to our favourite restaurant.

Here is a funny story: Mrs. Blackfoot and Skklog went with my dad to go get a rental car. They took longer than expected, so Minxie and I were left to get our stuff packed and our room empty. We had ten minutes to check out. From what we were told, if you are late, they charge you a whole other night. So, we hurried. As we were leaving, she pointed out some change that she said was mine. Oh, I didn't realize. So, I started to put it in Mrs. Blackfoot's bag. I suddenly got a selfish streak and thought, if I did, she would keep it. I don't use or carry change. I put it in a sorter and collect it. This is how I have purchased most of my guns and several of my swords. So, I zipped the pocket back up and opened the smallest pocket on my carry-on bag. Right there staring back at me was my car and house keys! As I said, this bag was going with my parents. Had I not found that, we would have landed in Grand Rapids, Michigan with no way to get home or way into our house if we did! Man oh man, did we luck out on that one!

Well, to bed! :sleep1:
