Willow Way has a stamper machine.

Back when there was absolutely no money in the business, Dad designed and built his own soap stamper -- it had a hand powered press, but had its own from-scratch refrigeration unit for the stamping dies, to make it easy to get the soap out of the stamp. wow.

The funniest thing about the refrigeration unit was when my dad's father came in, looked at the first unit, and said "I think it'd be more efficient if you turned [some piece, I forget which] *this* way..." Dad considered it, and from then on, the next unit did it the way my Grandfather said to.

Here's a picture of the (first) stamp. Note the white die and refrigerant lines -- that's all the frost.

Hi everybody!

http://www.suitetake.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/drnick.png

Sorry I haven't checked in for a bit. Since the promo news they've been keeping me crazy busy at work. Looks like things are going to slow down a bit now though.

BTW, Skklog gets :thumbup1::thumbup1: for making better use of his sig line.

No, sadly. They are a little funny about the helicopters. Aside from teaching us to shut one down in an emergency, they don't let us touch the birds. :001_rolle

Okay, story:

We have a new guy and things have been a little slow lately. So, three of us decided to check out some little known areas. This has led to us climbing down through plenum walls, and elevator shaft, scouring the sub-basement, etc. We have gotten to do this on three or four nights in the last week and a half. I decided to play a game, to give each other missions to accomplish without being caught on camera. There is a practical side to that as it helps us think like the "bad guys".

Well, in these adventures, we found a six foot plus Ronald McDonald. It wasn't long and we had plans of sneaking him around the hospital and taking a picture of him in different locations. This is a terminable offense, BTW. :001_rolle

We decided on our first target. The Safety Coordinator for the hospital started in Security. He has only been in his current position a few months. We have been threatening to do something to his office all along. So, we stole Ronald and smuggled him up the the second floor office. There, one officer took his shirt and put on him and we snapped a few photos. This was sent out in an Email to a select few as a Suspicious Person Alert. Doug played right along and responded back to it. It was great!

You have no idea how difficult it is to sneak around with a six and a half foot Ronald McDonald.

We showed this to the ER Charge Nurse who thought it was great. We explained how he was going to be a recurring character for a while. I said he may even appear in the ER. She loved this and came up with a brilliant plan. We are going to put him on a ER bed in an out-of-the-way room. We are going to put him in restraints, cover him with blankets, and put a spit hood on him so he will be almost all covered. We are then going to send one of the Behavioral Health Assessment Team members in to see him. The victim chosen will get a real kick out of it.

It didn't work out tonight because things were crazy! We had four flights with five patients, all within an hour. One helicopter had to standby while we got one of the others off the pad. In addition to that, we had a huge fight on the floor involving a man with too many girlfriends present at the same time. Police were called and our House Supervisor over-reacted and got into it with one of our officers. It was a mess!

So, plans are postponed until tonight.

Hysterical right up until.... The Police were called and our House Supervisor...

Many thanks for the update, Jim. Encouraging news, indeed!

And Blake, um, I'm lovin it!

Where is everybody? We didn't even get a Slagle Rock'n'Roll.

Sorry brother. I've been terribly busy lately.

Mom and Dad just took the wraps off of GMS shave soap #21. I'll get a sample early next week for testing, then if it passes muster, it's off to the Usual Gang of Idiots. Mom's been playing with citrus and bay-rum-type essential oils lately, so we'll see what the stuff smells like. Interestingly, she said the soap lather smells better than the soap puck: that's sort of funny.

Also, GMS ordered a new piece of equipment: a soap plodder, to probably be paired with a mill later. I remain awed and a little nervous at how seriously they're taking this whole shave soap thing. They're spending real money all because I got interested in wet shaving, and they expect to make a profit from it (uh, that's a lot of soap they need to sell, folks).

Also, now I have to learn how to use Pro/Engineer (http://www.ptc.com/products/proengineer/) to design the soap stamp. Gah! I'm being put to work! (Well, they did start college funds for Little Soapbox and SBJr, so I'll shut up now.)

Hey, we resemble that first remark! Oh and I've used other soaps that smell better when lathered.

:cursing:

I have been sitting here bored all day. Yesterday, I went to bed at around 2 because I was bored, no because I was sleepy. I thought, oh good, today is Friday. Mrs. Blackfoot should be getting home a little earlier than normal. Maybe we can watch a movie or something. I don't do that very often.

Well, she just called. Yes, she will be getting home a little early. However, she is only going to be stopping by for a few minutes. Tonight is the Bi-monthly gathering of sisters from our congregation to play games. Some times some of the 'widowed' husbands get together while their wives play. Even if they are planning to, I am sick and can't go out. This blows!

Sorry to hear it! Hang in there brother.

I am home thank God!

Got in last night at 6:00 pm as predicted.

Absolutely crazy routing - I was on Malaysia Air from Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai and United from Shanghai to Chicago - After I checked in for my flight in KL I was informed that they couldn't check my bag through to Chicago and I had to pick it up myself

This means that I had an hour to go through Chinese Immigration, get my bag, clear customs and then go to the United counter, check in my bag and get a boarding pass, then go through Immigration and Security again to leave.

Lucky for me that the flight landed early, I'm not afraid to scream until they put me at the front of the line, and that I have a multiple entry Visa to China or there's no way I would have made it.

Man, Corporate Travel Agents need to be frequently smacked about the head, neck and shoulders.

Sorry, that was longer than I intended.

Wow, one day it's dead around here, and now it is hopping!

Wow, that's a strong statement. I must look into a Krona. I'm still lining up a bunch of razors for sale, but it doesn't mean I don't like to experiment. I've just found that the Merkurs, Mühle, and a few pre-1940 open-comb Gillettes shave best for me. But Krona's aren't expensive yet.

I'll have to revisit the 195 and Slim Adjustable before I put them away for SBJr's intro to wet shaving in about 13 years. I expect he'll start with a blue tip Super Speed, though!

I still want to try a Super Adjustable, a Red Tip, and an Old Type. Last week, I tried shaving with my Fat Boy and on another day my Slim, and I hate them both now! I also have a blue Tip, my first vintage razor, but I haven't used it since I bough the Slim and Fat Boy. Now, I own more SEs than Gillettes, which I think is hilarious, because up until a month ago I had no interest in them at all! I still blame Rich.

The Krona is an excellent shaver, don't let the plastic handle fool you. They are hard to find around here, but when I find one they are always under $10. I bought mine for $7.

Makes me curious. What will everyone else be using in 13 years? Heck, will any of us still be on here then?

13 years is a long time. I'll be as old as Rich then.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Whether we're still on the B&B by then, I'll still be using straights and DEs, and maybe SEs occasionally. Why would I go back to paying insane prices for mediocre-to-bad shaves?

:thumbup1:

 I don't think the kiddos would appreciate me doing that at the moment. Then who will make them lunch and keep them from killing each other? I'll have to settle for tea at the moment.

Long Island or Texas?

I still need to try some other injector blades. So far I have only used the ones from the local stores. I might have to look into that after the trip.

I bought some Schick injectors at the grocery store a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I bought a pack of 20 Personna injector blades thru Atlanta Barber Supply for about the same price as I paid for the Schick blades. I haven't finished off the Schick yet, so I don't know how the Personna blades are.

Blake -- a few years ago I did a group buy of Ted Pella SE and injectors. It went very well. The shipping costs were a touch high from Ted Pella, so buying in bulk and redistributing made sense, plus not everyone wanted to buy huge quantities of blades just to try 'em out. I've still got some Ted Pella SEs if you want to try a couple.

I didn't know they had SEs, too.

I am always up for trying something new.

It is amusing. A similar conversation is going on in another thread right now. They are recommending these (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=27404&catid=89896&trx=PLST-0-CAT&trxp1=89896&trxp2=27404&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-CAT).

Those are the Schicks I was referring to.

:w00t::w00t::w00t: Can't wait!

Hey! UGI?! :blushing:

OK, while I'm feeling up to it, here are the pictures.
Slim adjustable:

And because Mr. Crafty made me take pictures before I toss it for its uselessness, a plastic blade container:

[Sgt Schultz]I see nothing![/Sgt Schultz]

Well, Jesse, I'll say this. I am not a big spender and still have lots of stuff to try. But GMS is still my favourite. With the proper scents, you have a long-term customer here. I am sure that doesn't make you feel any better, but I tried. :001_rolle

:thumbup1: Ditto.

OK, let's try this again.

A Gillette Super Speed Flair:

http://s235.photobucket.com/albums/ee70/K_Mommy0407/kronahead.jpg http://s235.photobucket.com/albums/ee70/K_Mommy0407/krona.jpg

And a old Schick plastic blade container that I was forced to photograph before throwing it out:
http://s235.photobucket.com/albums/ee70/K_Mommy0407/schickblandes.jpg

And the slim adjustable is up there in Jesse's post. (And yes, Jesse, that was exactly the problem with the url. Thanks).)

:thumbup1: Nice!

*ah* *ah-choo!*

Please excuse me for a minute. I have a ten year old homebrew to go drink.

Did you brew it yourself? Back in my drinking days I was pretty big into homebrewing. Nearly every Saturday in the winter I would brew a half barrel sized batch in my 22 gallon brew pot, from 20-30 pounds of malted barley.

It was fairly time consuming from milling to mashing, then brewing & cooling, racking into fermenters and finally cleaning up. But wow! It was the best beer I ever drank.

It can, depending on the recipe. However, it usually has a much higher flavor content. My Wisconsin Spring Porter was over 7% alcohol while my wheat beer was only a little over 3%.

My, this has been an interesting day. We almost watched a movie anyhow. But, it would be two in the morning before we went home. Riding home, I felt a raindrop. That is when it hit me like a flash. I had checked the weather before leaving. It is supposed to be dry until one this morning. It had to be at least twelve thirty. I raced that piece of Japanese engineering home, trying to get ahead of the storm. It seemed I was losing. I watched lighting all the way home and I was heading right for it. I made it home a little ahead of my wife and was pushing my machine into the garage as she pulled in. I know it is stupid to ride my motorcycle in the rain. I do it anyway. But I can't justify doing it while I am already sick.

Yep, I've still got all my gear, but I haven't brewed for a while. It's a lot of work, but the results are...fantastic. I make/made 5 gallons at a time, which was about all I could handle at once.

Does homebrewed beer have a higher alcoholic content?

It can, depending on the recipe. However, it usually has a much higher flavor content. My Wisconsin Spring Porter was over 7% alcohol while my wheat beer was only a little over 3%.

My highest ever was almost 11% from a honey/mead beer, using a champagne yeast. That stuff was great: light, fresh, and packed a serious wallop.

Is it just me or is Rob getting lazy with the SlagleRolls?

I may have been a little too ambitious yesterday.

Sorry to hear that.

I'm curious how it's going to be too. I know that, like tallow soaps, bay rum has a cult/boutique following. If the new equipment makes it really easy to add scent with a plodder ("extruder") and mill, it'll open up the possibilities for more and even custom scents. And Irena (thanks again!) passed along some neat information to me that might be relevant to Rich at some point... :001_cool:

 Herring scented shave sticks with added krill? Really, Jesse, that's too much to ask. :biggrin1:

I'm currently hacking my Nintendo Wii to avoid having to swap DVDs all the time (thus preserving both the DVDs and the DVD mechanism in the Wii, and keeping both a little further from the reach of Little Soapbox). The Wii Homebrew Channel will also enable some add-on functionality like a video media player. This is really cool. As with so many devices these days, the ubiquity of home PC hardware means lots of our devices are really just home PCs in pretty casings.

(The Air Force, e.g., runs a small supercomputer that uses Sony PS3 game consoles as their "compute nodes" instead of a bunch of traditional PCs or servers).

Hang on to your razors for a while -- you'll want to circulate back to them in a year or two, just to see if they were as bad/good as you remember

I regularly used the Fatboy & Slim for about six months, then I found the Krona. Going back to the adjustables, I find that I do not like them. But, I still want to try an old type, a red tip and the super. We'll see, but I am fairly certain the FB & S will be going away. No to mention the blue tip.

My Slim used to be my go-to razor, until I decided to break out the NEW that bite me on the neck a year ago and see if I could tame it. Wow! What a difference a year makes. I was not impressed with the New, but I was pretty new at this the last time I tried it. I haven't shaved since Tuesday, so a straight is going to be used to mow this down. After that, I want o try out one of my News. I am trying to go back and revisit some of the razors I got early on. My previous experience didn't give them a fair shake, I believe.

I just had an epiphany. I have always wondered why there is more orange, lemon, and lime candies in a bag when they are statistically the least favourite. Does it cost that much more for the good ones like cherry strawberry, grape, etc. It just hit me that people probably don't eat all of the second tier flavours. Instead, they go out and buy a new bag and eat all the first tiers.

I just had an epiphany. I have always wondered why there is more orange, lemon, and lime candies in a bag when they are statistically the least favourite. Does it cost that much more for the good ones like cherry strawberry, grape, etc. It just hit me that people probably don't eat all of the second tier flavours. So after the most recent (er, not in this thread) B&B thread about razors in carry-on luggage, I wrote a very nice email to the folks at the UK Department for Transport and Standards. After about a week, I got a very nice email in reply. Of particular (but not surprising) interest:

The steps taken by the airport manager if a passenger is found to be carrying an item which is prohibited into the airside are a matter for the airport manager. Normally the item will be confiscated and destroyed and the passenger is permitted to continue their journey. However, the airport manager does have powers to request further action is taken against the passenger if he feels this is necessary and justifiable.

The Aviation Security Act 1982 (as amended by the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990) sets out the provisions available to the enforcement bodies should a passenger attempt to take a prohibited item on board an aircraft. The Aviation Security Act 1982 can be read on the internet at:
www.opsi.gov.uk/RevisedStatutes/Acts/ukpga/1982/cukpga_19820036_en_2#pt1-l1g4

Every New or Old I come across if damaged, so I keep searching for one I am willing to pay for. Good thing I have recently discovered SEs, they're much cheaper here.

The New came from the dad of a friend of mine, who said that it either belonged to his dad or his father-in-law, he couldn't remember which. It has no cracks in the handle and very little wear on the gold part. My Old Type came from eBay in a very nice case and is even shinier than the New, but has one tiny almost invisible crack in the handle...

I hear you on the lemon/lime, as it tastes the way all those scented cleaners smell, but you think cherry is better? :001_huh:

Okay, I just hung up with my wife. She informed me she got me a doctor's appointment today. As she is telling me the details, she tells me I will be seeing Physician's Assistant So & So. She tells me, "She is pretty." I started laughing and she said she made special arrangements to ensure I actually go since I hate going to the doctor so much. I really didn't want to go to the doctor. Who knows, maybe I should go see what she has to say.

A vicious nasty ingrown toenail.

On the plus side, I have to find and get whatever cold liquid he used to numb my toe. I think it would make a great summer aftershave!
Really? No one is going to make a Fawlty Towers joke here? Really?

Cherry flavors taste like cough syrup. Blech! I'll take citrus anytime.
Or Children's Tylenol. :thumbdown

On the upside, the grass seed we planted is growing. The early sprouters are getting high and filling in, and the late ones are just coming up. Definitely a lot more green than before. Hoorah!

But, I was sick twice, yes, twice, with two different things this week. I blame Blake. And, I got bit by a spider in my shoe. I blame the media.

So when does the shaving soap go on the website for sale?

Enquiring minds want to know...

Well, first they need to get boxes, soap stamps, the soap mill to go with the extruder (plodder), and, uh, a new website to replace that 1999 monstrosity written by a guy we don't talk to anymore, but yeah, I'd say by ... Football Season? Maybe sooner. Col. Soapbox and I have been discussing manufacturing processes over the last couple of days, but I have to learn how to use Pro/Engineer (CAD software) so I can design the soap stamp for them. So I'm the holdup.

Oh sorry, that's right, you're new! My folks run a soap manufacturing company, "Green Mountain Soap". And since I became really interested in wet shaving, Mom and Dad decided to put some R&D into shave soap. It's going pretty well, and I asked some of the B&Bers to help test the soaps. They're up to #21 now, and later this week, #22. The feedback from friends on B&B has been extraordinary.

Impressions?

I like it. Used my Rooney 3/1 Super yesterday and got lather that looks world-class, even on the third and fourth passes. Performed great, smelled great. In fact, for the first time, I could smell the "citrus/bay rum" scent all day; subtle but surprisingly durable.

Per your and Jim's findings that 19 and 20 worked best in a bowl-lather /face-lather superlather, the latest recipe is mostly a blend of the two of those. I haven't face lathered with #21 yet; I am still bowl lathering. Of course the lather from my $9 Omega boar (this morning) wasn't as good as the Rooney, but still good. I think the lather is a little slicker than 20, and it definitely lasts longer than 19. But after only two shaves, it's hard to say anything definitive, and -- well, YMMV (I haven't seen Ray in months, so it's safe to say "it" every now and then). And given that DFW has pretty hard water, I think the hard water performance is admirable. Dad even mentioned making a hard-water-specific version that included water softeners (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Water#Soap_Additives) like others do.

Getting soap off the puck--a common concern with most of the GMS soap betas--was a little easier, and 22 should be easier still, if my guess is right.

Naturally, feedback from the B&B gang keeps improving this soap, so my impressions--especially as I am a potentially biased source of information--shouldn't count for much. As such, I've been concerned about revealing my impressions of the soap for that reason. But, hey, you asked.

In other news, the extruder (plodder) for making shave sticks is on order, and the mill is apparently not far behind. And I learned how to use Pro/Engineer CAD software, so we can make a soap puck stamping die now.
