I hear you on the sigs. I don't think it is a good idea, and to me seems to maybe have the air of punishment? But, I'm pretty new so my opinion probably won't count for anything, and it's not really a deal breaker for me. I'm more confused about threads where people are having civil conversations and all of the sudden someone says something nasty out of the blue because there is a difference of opinion. I've seen it on several threads now. And not even about big stuff like politics. It's little stuff.
OK, I've debated about asking, but who's Chip? I've seen him referenced a few times.

Chip aka "limecat" aka "rabidpotatochip" aka "rpc" is a b&b legend and great guy who has moved on to other things. If you search on his user name "rabidpotatochip" you'll see why he has reached mythic status around here and is missed by all who knew/know him.

First -- yes, you can say "we." You've got a lot of experience ahead of you, but you're clearly finding a home in the Clown House. Second -- the CH is often silly, and, as such, not viewed as either a threatening intellectual environment or even a place for "such serious matters" as politics, gun ownership, or religion. (Nevermind that we have had a very erudite discussion about Biblical translation recently, but that's not the point). Third, the "esprit de corps" of the CH, possibly because of the previous point, creates an atmosphere where most comments are taken in the best light, rather than interpreted in a way that might be offensive. We're just not like that. And a possible Fourth: we're pretty good at self-policing (with several exceptions in the Picture threads, but even those were only borderline). It may be a pain in the butt for the Mods to ride herd over the CH, but in general, the CH threads are less potential trouble than several other subforums.
B&B -- because of excellent mod oversight -- has far fewer problems than nearly all other boards with out-of-control flamewars. Before things go nuts, the thread gets locked, the posters warned, and occasionally, banhammer raised. But the CH is a pretty good nook.

Surely you've seen some of the totally over the top sig lines? I also assume that you don't know totally how vB works. In order to regulate the sigs it has to be tied to some kind of rule.

Jim, what's the update on the girl?
i've been working on that...
she is still being sedated, but there's lots of positive improvement, responding to sounds and sights and touch, not just "posturing" but actual reactions.
she's been taking breaths on her own, the machine is set at 24 breaths per minute, but she's taking 26-29!
there's still swelling in her brain, it's less than it was, but still needs to go away.
she's been moved to a new bed, they had to take her braces off and that went well, blood pressure, etc is well. all just glorious praises.
For those who are praying or wanting to pray, the specific current request is for the swelling in Emily's brain to go down.

glad you're friend has made it, such a terrible phase we go through as teenagers, huh? delusions of invincibility.
Emily's young age may be a benefit in her recovery, but it's so discouraging to look in that room and see her laying there like that.
But, I wouldn't label it false hope - and indeed the doctors are very careful to try and prevent the parents from getting premature or unrealistic expectations - but I know in Whom they're placing their hope, and there's no false hope in Him! And indeed both Emily and my daughter have recently made a public profession of faith in Christ (and I get to baptize my daughter - I cannot contain my joy!). So, even if things don't go as we want them to, we know that they are going just as they should.
The dad made it to church Sunday morning to share with the body, and to hear the joy and peace in his voice amid this major trial is very encouraging and motivating.

So, even if things don't go as we want them to, we know that they are going just as they should.
The dad made it to church Sunday morning to share with the body, and to hear the joy and peace in his voice amid this major trial is very encouraging and motivating.
This is wonderful news. And I'm glad to hear she is starting to respond to stimuli. She continues to be in my prayers.

By the way, your demotivational fortune cookie for today is: You will have to explain to your coworkers the same thing you explained yesterday. And the day before. And three times last week.
Sounds like a normal day for me.
i've been working on that...
she is still being sedated, but there's lots of positive improvement, responding to sounds and sights and touch, not just "posturing" but actual reactions.
she's been taking breaths on her own, the machine is set at 24 breaths per minute, but she's taking 26-29!
there's still swelling in her brain, it's less than it was, but still needs to go away.
she's been moved to a new bed, they had to take her braces off and that went well, blood pressure, etc is well. all just glorious praises.
For those who are praying or wanting to pray, the specific current request is for the swelling in Emily's brain to go down.
Thanks for the update, and I am glad to hear new of improvement.

Wow, you really are bellyaching about this all over the place aren't you. This has nothing to do with excluding anyone or making you pay to play. Surely you've seen some of the totally over the top sig lines? I also assume that you don't know totally how vB works. In order to regulate the sigs it has to be tied to some kind of rule.
Nobody did it to pick on you or force you to pay for anything.

And for the record, Rob, I consider this whole matter closed. It's quite clear to me, upon following some of the ongoing discussions about this, that this is the new status quo and it isn't going to change. That's fine, it's your site and you can do anything you (i.e. Joel, Nick and the moderators who represent their interests) want with it. So I will sit down, be quite, and play nice even if I am less than pleased with the direction I think B&B is going in. So unless you have anything else to, let me close by saying I am sorry if I caused any problem by voicing my concerns.

Good advice. Matt, I'm a moderator here, and you've attacked a B&B member in an open forum. While I'd prefer not to be put in this situation by someone with whom I interact here regularly, of course I'm in on the action. I was actually thinking the other day that your posts had gotten friendlier -- I'd noticed less "snark" and fewer of the patented gollum83 rolleyes smilies in your posts. Hope that all is well with you, that you've just had an off day or two (we all do), and that you've been able to see the bigger picture.

Hey, Blake, you had asked several days ago about how the scuttle worked out? Well, it is very lovely. But there are a few things that weren't exactly in the instruction manual. Keep in mind I use cream, not soap.
First, don't use any pressure on the brush. Tips only, otherwise the lather escapes. I wonder if that is proper procedure anyway?
Second, don't put super hot water in the resevoir. It makes the lather break down much faster and not a very good lather to begin with. Use tap hot or a little hotter. I got that tip from somewhere around here. I'll see if I can find the thread to link you. But, I did try it that way today and it was a vast improvement.
And there you have it.

I'm not a fan of the new sig policy, and if I wasn't trying to share important (to me) info I would remove it altogether - but that's just me being nuts

Well, yes, federal law dictates that donor organs and tissues can't be reimbursed (other than medical expenses for living donors), but the procurement agencies are on the hook for procurement costs, including the folks who meet with families and, of course, the surgical team. I used to work on one of the surgical teams -- they paid quite well, in part because we had to be on call 24/7. Most procurement agencies are non-profit, but some may not be -- I'm not sure. Blood donations work the same way. I'm not arguing right or wrong, but agree that it was eye opening to me when I saw what we had to insure some of the tissue packages we sent for!
You lost me on the congratulations (I haven't had coffee yet...) -- who are we congratulating?

Sea salt with dark chocolate is surprisingly good. I mean, it's a different taste. It reminds me of the first time I tried chocolate and orange together: I didn't expect it to be good, but it was really, really good -- and I don't have much of a sweet tooth either.

Sounds great to me!
My wife left for work after I got home today, most unusual. All of a sudden, I hear a phone ringing. Crap! Her Blackberry! I was sitting here in a pair of shorts. So I threw some clothes on and took off. Yes, contrary to popular belief, I do wear pants. I will not ride a motorcycle in shorts...or a kilt!
For you newcomers, Mrs. Blackfoot works at a place that provides employment to MR patients. I am told that is not the accepted term anymore. This PC crap just irritates me. I digress. She is in charge of the manufacturing facility. They have many different divisions. One of them is actually caring for patients that are a little more severe and can't work.
Thus, the stage is set. I am waiting on the LOTH to come to reception. In a room off the room I am in, is a classroom? There are a bunch of people in there. For those of you that have worked around the Behavioral Health field, you know there is a fine line between patients and staff, one that outsiders can not see often times. So, I don't know which were staff or patients, but there were at least fifty of them in there. They were playing music and dancing. There were drums, maracas and God knows what else. People were bobbing up and down and people going in circles. At first, it looked and sounded like utter chaos! However, I realized very quickly that it wasn't. I felt like Dr. Livingstone listening to a native ceremony.
In all seriousness, it was pretty neat. I could have sat and watched that for a while. There was something very primitive and pure about it. It transported you; made the world and its stress fade away. It almost made you want to go in and join in the dancing and watch the final vestiges of dark, stressful reality drift away.
I often feel sorry for such people and their family that have to take care of them. Yet, this reminds me that they have a special gift, or privilege. They get to enjoy the more pure aspects of life that the rest of us overlook. They may never experience the excitement of their first car, but they will never lose their fascination with watching birds play. Things like this.
This has gotten too deep for us TATers, so I will end on this. These moments, when we pay attention, help us refocus and have a greater appreciation of life. The ride home looked entirely different to me than on the way in.

Thanks, when I started typing it, it was supposed to be amusing, with the dancing and drums and all. Once I get going though, my thoughts tend to take over.
I also thank your parents for their support. A lot of the government funding for these facilities is being axed.
The place TWGW (http://www.pathfinderservices.org/) works for tries to place clients in jobs and help them lead as normal of lives as possible. The branch my wife is over is for those that can't work at, say McDonald's. So, companies like Jesse's family's business (Is that even grammatically correct? :001_huh:) will contract simple jobs that are too tedious or whatever. One company she is trying to get a contract with needs them to put Teflon tape on fittings for making gas fireplaces. Some of it is packing products, assembling parts, sorting parts, etc.
Here is a page with some pictures of Mrs. Blackfoot (http://www.pathfinderservices.org/manufacturing/index.html). :001_wub:
Seriously, for those of you that are in a position to affect such decisions, I encourage to check out local facilities that provide these types of services. They are an invaluable resource for clients and customers alike. With budgets the way they are, these facilities are having more and more trouble keeping afloat.

The cost to use the ARC's services are very low and it's been a fruitful relationship for both sides. Once we get the shave soap ready, it's likely that the soap will have been packed by such a facility.

Excellent! Is Europe really that much more strict than the States?
No. For a while the EU and UK had more restrictive hand luggage specs (no liquids at all for a while), but they've since relaxed them back to--wait for it--the same thing the TSA specifies. The EU rules, like the UK rules, are actually very well written and clear. Naturally they still contain lots of legal-ese, but there's some common sense in there too. I was a little surprised that they restricted straight razors specifically a few years before they included the now-standard "razor blades not enclosed in a cartridge" verbage, but that's all.
I'm really too easily "trolled in" to these sorts of discussions. Rich is right, I should really let the guy find out for himself what "I'm smarter than you -- and I interpret the rules this way" will mean at security checkpoints.

When I was in Europe, there was one inconsistency that I was aware of. On this side of the pond, we are allowed one carry on and one "extra" bag, like a purse of backpack. Not all of Europe allowed this at that point. We were scared we would go to board and be told no. But, we got away with it, so it is legal. :spockflam
Couldn't help myself. You remember my story of flying over there? Using the logic that these people use, knives, screwdrivers, multi-tools, and scissors are all acceptable to keep in your carry-on.

Hell, I remember Jonestown. I was only 7, but it scared me.
I am too young to remember that one, although I probably know as much about it as those who were watching the news then.
Thanks! I got a late start on marriage and kids, so I wanted to see them graduate from college before I turned 60. I might make it. Barely.
I've been married for 7 years this December, and have enjoyed it, good and bad times. The kids, we've been striking out on. I would like to have some before I am too old to see them grown, but c'est le vie. I do wish those who have them the best, and ask them to remember that not everyone is so lucky.
Once again someone proves that the CH & TAT isn't just all fun and games. Sometimes we are serious and get important points across. Thanks Blake, that was great! :thumbup1:
Blake, I don't say this lightly, especially here in the TAT, but you, sir, need professional help.

December? TWGW and I's anniversary is in December as well. It will be 11 years for us. No kids here either. We want them, but circumstances have not worked out yet. Heck, I am getting older than I care to be to start. I wanted to have kids before I was 30. Oh well, I'm never on time.

Come back, shaving smeagle!
Matt if you feel that it has to happen, I sure hope it is a short lived thing.
In the relatively short time that I have been here, we have had way too many great people hit the dusty road.
I miss them and I miss their camaraderie. Each one I'm sure had what they felt were important reasons for leaving, but we are all the poorer because of it.
Don't make us miss your humor, insight and friendship too.
I promise I'll post more here when I get back to the states!!!

It used to be quite exciting and adventerous.
It gets to be a bit of a pain after a while.
People are darned insistent about speaking their local language, mosquitos the size of Hueys, and finding food that isn't either made with napalm or the consistency of boiled okra and egg whites can be challenging.
It is neat learning new things about people and places, that is probably the sole remaining interest for me.
The amused look on peoples faces as you attempt to murder their language is also kind of fun.

Funny you should mention the Veg. I have some here and have been wearing it. Normally, I am completely immune to mosquitos (unlike my poor wife) but for whatever reason Malaysian Mosquitos seem to be attracted to the Veg.

The other news is surprising and disappointing.
In happier news, Richard, I just picked up some of the Stewart's Key Lime -- looking forward to trying it this weekend. :thumbup1: I also bought a rack suitable for stabilizing beer can-mounted poultry. That, and ribs (the two are unrelated.) A good time will be had by all!
You are going to et to stick a beer can up something after all.
Hi everyone, I haven't had much wifi these days. I am currently fighting the heat and humidity in San Antonio, TX. I brought Mrs. Oldsaw with me this time out and she is having great fun. As soon as we get loaded we are headed for Syracuse, NY.
That is great. It is neat when a husband and wife can travel together. :thumbup1:

My TAT friends I'm so happy to say I've been selected for promotion to Master Sergeant! Just needed to share this great info with friends.
Chad/Matt....
Thanks fellas. :thumbup1:
Hearty Congrats !
That's an acheivement to be proud of, and I salute you.
Senior NCO's run the service. Without 'em it would grind to a halt.
If you put half the effort into the Airfarce that you do here, it's plain to see why you made the grade.
Lets...be careful out there (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081873/quotes), Phil.
I loved that show.
Arrived Jakarta last night and changed 150 us dollars and got 1.3 million rupiah.
Finally, I'm a millionaire!! ha ha

It's good stuff, Chad. And it goes decently with tequilla for a poor man's margarita if you let it go a little flat first (the soda is very carbonated).

Good man. I guess that's what I was getting at, the aromatics. I have had some nice smokes from the jars, but I just prefer not to take my chances.
Is there a particular brand or blend you prefer? Just curious what an experienced pipe smoker favors.
In other news, I tried a Virgil's Real Cola today. It's very similar to their Rootbeer in many aspects, yet different. It is caffeine and preservative free, uses real can sugar, nutmeg, caramel, vanilla extract, clove bud oil, cinnamon, lemon and orange extracts, and lime juice. It all amazingly blends well together and produces a very smooth and creamy cola, that isn't a typical cola. Completely different from any I have had. Forget all about Coke and Pepsi, Real cola is in its own category. I give it :thumbup:

Airfarce. I am sure that was a typo since you are on your phone, but that was kind of funny.

Chad, this is what my ambiguous congratulations were for yesterday. Great job Rob!

Thanks again, Blake!
Wow, great news! Obviously you've earned it, so congratulations on being selected for promotion.
Thanks!
You're welcome!
To go with the promotion, I must suggest a new avatar. To wit:

That's a bit too many Blake but I can hope! As they say, aim high. Those are the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force (old style). That is the highest ranking E-9 position in the entire USAF.
Congratulations on the promotion!
Thank you!
Congrats, Rob! So happy for you.
Thanks a bunch!
Congratulations Master Sergeant Slagle.
Wow, that sounds so funny to see written like that. Seems like only yesterday I was an Airman Basic (no stripes).
Congrats to Rob!
Thanks again, brother!
Congratulations!!! I bet you can see Sergeant Major from here, or even Command Sergeant Major, that will be fun.
Well in my case it would be Chief Master Sergeant or Command Chief Master Sergeant. If I keep my ducks in a row anything is possible!
Hearty Congrats !

For any curious this is actually what the stripes of a Master Sergeant look like (for our dress uniform):

I wouldn't exactly call myself an experienced pipe smoker, despite the fact that I have been on and off with it for over 25 years. I've spent more time off than on. However, lately (and your preferences will change with time) I prefer Virginia blends. McClelland's makes some nice blends of which I currently have Black Woods Flake.
I think I already mentioned the Peterson's Irish Flake that I am finding quite pleasing. There are so many varieties that it is good that one's preferences may change. Then there's the Latakia blends which I also like and those I do sometimes buy from the bulk jars.

Very nice. Mr. Crafty has one coming at some point but has a lot more patience than me. He's taking the "it will get here when it gets here" route.

Court ordered actually. That ended when my therapist got committed shortly after taking me on as a patient.

I didn't expect mine so soon. It has been so long, I almost didn't think it would ever really get here. It's nobody's fault, just a long process.

Hmmm... This explains a lot. House arrest with Internet priveleges would account for near round the clock posting activity.
