All that means is that you're just lousy at reading body language, unless I'm actually speaking to Ray's cat rather than Ray himself.

A few updates:
Little soapbox has surprised me by vaulting the baby gate that was supposedly keeping her in her room (she's not even 19 months old), and expressing her discontent at being put down for bedtime at the top of her lungs -- at the top of the stairs. I am impressed, frightened, and puzzled at how to continue. For the moment, we're closing the door, but that will reduce air flow and make her room colder in the winter and hotter in the summer.
Mrs. Soapbox and I have finally joined the HDTV world; bought a 47" Vizio today. Pretty nice, and a great upgrade to our 32" CRT standard def TV! I need to rig some decent sound, but I'm pleased with the purchase so far.
The 120Hz refresh rate does produce the "soap opera effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation)" though. Hard to avoid, I think, but it does make the video sync/speed awkward at times.

Honestly it could be worse. When my little brother was that age he would escape from the car seat whenever we were in the car. It didn't matter how well you buckled him in or what car seat you would use, he would dislocate his shoulders, hips... you name it and escape. My parents actually went through several child "safety" seats before giving up because nothing could hold him.

QNo, he isn't. Have you ever lived with a cat? Because they usually believe they are at least on the same social level as humans, if not higher.
:nonod: I'm allergic. My allergy to cats has gotten much better over the years but when I was a kid it was terrible. I was miserable just being around someone else who owned a cat. I couldn't even consider going into someones house that actually had one. As such I have no heart break when I see one flattened on the road. I know, I know cruel but I went through a long time in misery because of the snotty little fur balls. Ironically I was a big Garfield fan as a kid.

Congrats on the new TV! As far as the little Soapbox is concerned, consider yourself very very lucky. My oldest was walking at 9 months and running at 10 months and hasn't slowed down a bit over the last decade! She climbed out of her crib the first time on her 1st Birthday. I never really had to deal with the screaming but with all the climbing my daughter earned the nickname Monkey.

I went from a 32 standard def to an 120" 1080p, not a bad upgrade!
As far as a surround sound system, I would go with a Klips system.
I spent a lot of time listening to different systems and Klips are always the best.

You think that's bad, just wait until she's a teenage girl. :eek:
I know. I think of all the times I snuck out, or caused trouble, or etc., and then I talked to my parents and grandparents, and I realize it's genetic. There's no hope. I can only hope she's "born to hang (http://www.answers.com/topic/if-you-re-born-to-be-hanged-then-you-ll-never-be-drowned)" like the rest of us seem to have been. :wink2: The number of scrapes, near misses, dumb luck, and outright death-cheating in my family is interesting and impressive to me, but I expect that there's a similar bunch of stories in all families, since, if all of our forebears didn't cheat death we wouldn't be here, would we?! :001_rolle

Oh, in all, heck yeah. I'd much rather have a mobile, agile, strong little one than a docile, complacent, and/or weak little one. It's just more of a challenge to answer this way.
Congrats on the new TV! As far as the little Soapbox is concerned, consider yourself very very lucky. Little Soapbox was walking at ten months and never climbed out of her crib, but we moved her to a mattress on the floor a few months ago since she was threatening to do so. Now, she loves "chase" and "tag" like nobody's business, and, as we now see, the new "climbing wall" game... :001_tongu
I went from a 32 standard def to an 120" 1080p, not a bad upgrade!
Ten feet?? Ye gods, that's enormous. How big is the room??

As much as I tend to agree, I think that our budget for home theater is pretty much dry for a while. No Klipsch, nor anything else, unless I buy it with my "lunch money"... and most of that is going towards a new ham radio right now...

As far as a surround sound system, I would go with a Klips system.

Little Soapbox was walking at ten months and never climbed out of her crib, but we moved her to a mattress on the floor a few months ago since she was threatening to do so. Now, she loves "chase" and "tag" like nobody's business, and, as we now see, the new "climbing wall" game... :001_tongu
You are lucky and :lol::lol: Yeah, Monkey as we started calling her managed to clime onto tables and countertops at about 13 months. We absolutely couldn't leave her along for even a second. We had to make sure someone was watching her at all times.

So, in the spirit of "The Anything Thread", I'll tell you guys about my day yesterday.
I took my daughter out for a little quality time. We had lunch together, we played putt-putt together, and we watched a movie together (A Christmas Carol in 3D... very cool, BTW). The day was really special, but it was made even more so by the fact that she got her ears pierced after being afraid to do so (scared it would hurt too much). I always figured that would be something she'd insist on Mommy for, but she did it yesterday with me.
Way cool. It was one of my best days in a long long time. :thumbup:

Nice story, and thanks for telling us about it.
I, personally, can't wait to take little Soapbox out for ice cream this summer, just her and me. Soapbox junior will already be taking lots of time each day that is currently being lavished on her, so she'll possibly be a little out of sorts about it. I figure a little visit to the ice cream parlor might give mommy a break, and my daughter a little one-on-one time with Daddy. :smile:

Awesomeness brother!
So I'll share my funny ear piercing story with you all. When my daughter was little (probably starting around age 1) her mother used to ask her all the time if she wanted to get pretty earrings like Mommy. At about 2 she started saying yes. Her mom and grandmother tried to take her several times between 2 and 3.5 but every time the got her in the chair and the piercer grabbed her ear she completely lost it. At that age I highly doubt she new what was coming but was scared by the strange person grabbing her ear. Anyway, FF a few months her mother was deployed and a good friend of mine and I took our kids to the mall. We let them ride the silly rides and play a few games and then grabbed some lunch. While we eating lunch my daughter looks me dead in the eye and says, "Daddy I want my earrings today so I can be beautiful like you are." Yes, I had earrings but my little girl thought I was beautiful so it was all good!
Anyway I knew she wouldn't go through with it, but when we walked past the place that the ex and her mother had previously attempted it my daughter insisted that she wanted her earrings today. So, since we weren't in any hurry I said, ok lets go. We went in filled out the paperwork plopped her in the chair and I expected her to lose it. Well to our luck there was only one employee there that day who could do it so she explained it would have to be one ear at a time (they usually did both at once in case a little girl flipped out and fought the second one). So, I told my daughter we had to wait and she got really upset. My friends wife said, "Let her try, what's the worst that can happen she'll have one earring a little before the other one?" Hesitantly I agreed. The lady got the gun and pierced her right ear. She didn't flinch, jump or cry. She just sat there. Then she turned her head so her left was closer to the lady that was piercing them and said, "I wanna 'nuther one." We were all shocked. So, the lady pierced her left ear. The minute she pulled the gun away from my daughters ear she said, "I wanna mirror so I can see how pretty I am."
That little wierdo never shed a single tear. She was a rock. I was impressed that she did so well with me after being a menace for her Mother.
As sad as this may sound that six months that was just my daughter and I (while her mother was deployed) was probably 6 of the best months of my life. The ex was a monster but my little girl is a saint!
She's 6:001_smile

wow, great stories guys....
unfortunately, I had to miss the day we had my daughter's birthday that we went to get her ears pierced - really really sucked. she was very excited, absolutely giddy with anticipation, as a 6 year old girl could be, but....
had a trainwreck of an event at work for 2 weeks, and her birthday fell right in the middle of it.
long story short, new superintendent, trying to make a name for herself, wanted things changed to her way and done yesterday, looong work days, including several 18 hour days (uncommon, no; uncommon for a public school employee NOT a principal or supe, yes), that just totally screwed up that year.
needless to say, she didn't stay there very long, but it was too late, many of the best teachers and staff had already left to other districts, all but one of us from the tech department left, and the only people in town that would be sad to hear of her being struck by a meteor are the ones that benefited from the butt-smooching....
so, I finally see my daughter awake 4 days after her birthday and get to hear about getting her ears pierced long after the initial excitement had worn off (though still plenty excited).
The irony of it? I was the one that suggested getting her ears pierced as her main BD gift that year
:sad:

so, I finally see my daughter awake 4 days after her birthday and get to hear about getting her ears pierced long after the initial excitement had worn off (though still plenty excited).
The irony of it? I was the one that suggested getting her ears pierced as her main BD gift that year
:sad:
There's a whole lot of suck in that story:mad3:
I hate that you had to miss out on that :frown:

Paul, Happy Birthday to the boy!
My daughter really enjoyed her 3rd b'day party last month. We had 2 of her friends over for hotdogs and such. The kicker was the pinata that she'd been asking for for 6 months. She had a blast: started talking about her 4th birthday the next day! :thumbup:
Another plus was that my wife's birthday was a couple weeks later and I bet our girl told mommie "happy birthday" 15 times!

Now to this weekend... I have 2 great things happening this weekend. Friday, I'm going to Bob Allman's home/shop to work on making my own straight razor. We are going to try to do 2... SOOO, I could potentially get 2 new custom (crafted by my own grubby hands) straight razors... Way way cool. I'll have to go back and work a second day with him instead of Saturday.... because...
Saturday is Little Richmondesi's 2 year birthday:thumbup: What do you do for a 2 year old boy? I don't know, but it'll be fun
Wow! That is really cool! Be sure to post pics somewhere! :thumbup1:
And have fun with little Richmo! My niece turned 2 this summer, and I was afraid I was going to miss it since I live in Montana and my brother lives in Georgia. Fortunately, my little sister decided to get married the same weekend they had birthday festivities for my niece, and the two together warranted sufficient excuse to buy a plane ticket. It was great, except that there were so many people there I didn't get to really hang out with my niece at all.

Big +1; please document the efforts with a camera along the way. I'd love to see what steps you go through. And -- are you starting from iron ore, or steel ingots, or an already-formed blade blank? Will you (or Bob) temper/harden the steel yourself?
In other words, how much blacksmithing are you gonna do? Along with learning to arc weld and oxy/acetylene weld, learning to operate a forge to make a few nails or some such is on my bucket list -- albeit not as high up as "talk to someone on another continent via ham radio" and "hike Long's peak", but still, frontier skills are intriguing to me.

This reminds of newly discovered Shakespeare's original manuscripts for Romeo & Juliet. Hint: They doesn't say "Parting is such sweet sorrow", or "Wherefore art thou?" but rather they mention the noxious methaniacal by products of consuming excessive amounts of beans and washing it down with warm beer.
I knew it! I always told people that Shakespeare was nothing but a dumb redneck!
I've heard someone around here has been accused of that.

They never cease to amaze. :lol:
That depends. Do tuxedos include pants? If so, where are Blake's?

So, in the spirit of "The Anything Thread", I'll tell you guys about my day yesterday.
I took my daughter out for a little quality time. We had lunch together, we played putt-putt together, and we watched a movie together (A Christmas Carol in 3D... very cool, BTW). The day was really special, but it was made even more so by the fact that she got her ears pierced after being afraid to do so (scared it would hurt too much). I always figured that would be something she'd insist on Mommy for, but she did it yesterday with me.
Way cool. It was one of my best days in a long long time. :thumbup:

You can't pay for those memories. :thumbup:

Other than that, we sit around the lodge and play games all day. It's a very relaxing and fun time. Nothing makes a trip better than having no plans.

We had a blast. Several members of our church go up there once a year. There is a huge outlet mall a couple of miles away and a winery not very far off. Other than that, we sit around the lodge and play games all day. It's a very relaxing and fun time. Nothing makes a trip better than having no plans.
Great! My wife and I take a similar New Year's trip each year with two other couples we met in college. It's wonderful to be able to look forward to this trip each year as a respite from hectic holiday travels! We go someplace different each year though, since we all live in different corners of the country. This year was relatively close to home in Gatlinburg, TN. I'm already looking forward to next year!

The paint is good, but a good screen will beat it every time.
plus, I wanted the room to look normal when I wasn't watching a movie, so I got a Motorized screen.

A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
- "House" for instance, is feminine: "la casa". "Pencil", however, is masculine: "el lápiz."
A student asked what gender is 'computer? Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.
The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computadora"), because:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ("el computador"), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

Normally, but not on this trip. I have camped there before. They have a toboggan run there. One time, DrBob, Skklog, and I (it was summer time) were riding our bikes around the park when we noticed the sidewalk that runs alongside the run. We said, "What prevents us from riding on this hill of stupidity?" Since the only answer we could find was sanity, we tried it. It was fun, but was missing something. So, we would ride around in circles in the parking lot at the top so we would be going full speed when we hit the hill. We started timing ourselves with a stop watch and figured we were going nearly 40 MPH. Now, that was fun.

Awesome story, Rob:thumbup1:

Absolutely! :thumbup1:
Good morning all. I love the turn this thread has taken. Great stories.
After non-stop travel since 12/15, I'm happy to report that I'm home in VA and ready to get the spring term started. Hope you all had fantastic holidays. With the exception of the driving, I sure did. Now it's back to work and the beginning of the annual post New Year's diet. :glare:
Now, where's Doug to give us the fantasy football final results? :biggrin:
+1 Chad! Oh and.....
.....Congrats on the FF win!
wow, great stories guys....
unfortunately, I had to miss the day we had my daughter's birthday that we went to get her ears pierced - really really sucked. she was very excited, absolutely giddy with anticipation, as a 6 year old girl could be, but....
had a trainwreck of an event at work for 2 weeks, and her birthday fell right in the middle of it.
long story short, new superintendent, trying to make a name for herself, wanted things changed to her way and done yesterday, looong work days, including several 18 hour days (uncommon, no; uncommon for a public school employee NOT a principal or supe, yes), that just totally screwed up that year.
needless to say, she didn't stay there very long, but it was too late, many of the best teachers and staff had already left to other districts, all but one of us from the tech department left, and the only people in town that would be sad to hear of her being struck by a meteor are the ones that benefited from the butt-smooching....
so, I finally see my daughter awake 4 days after her birthday and get to hear about getting her ears pierced long after the initial excitement had worn off (though still plenty excited).
The irony of it? I was the one that suggested getting her ears pierced as her main BD gift that year
:sad:
Sorry to hear you had to miss it.
+1.
Awesomeness, Paul!
Sounds like great times. I really think our children are truly the greatest miracle/blessing of all.
I'm jealous. :thumbup:

The paint is good, but a good screen will beat it every time.
plus, I wanted the room to look normal when I wasn't watching a movie, so I got a Motorized screen.
I've seen people argue the opposite. However, he went all out. It was a true home theater. There are about a dozen leather lazy boy recliners on a incline (think stadium seating). The curtain is motorized (remote control). It looks normal, like a normal theater. :lol:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ("el computador"), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.
I think this one has been circulating since before the Commodore 64.
It took all afternoon and evening, but I am finally caught up. :001_rolle
