Joel,
Beautiful razor. How do you feel about horn as a scale material? I have a horn haircomb that has a personality of its own, warps in varying degree of magnitude depending on its placement on the vanity and the humidity in the air. Would a horn scale have this problem too?

I used a Slant/Feather combo and Taylors Avocado today as well. I too found my skin feeling a bit raw which is weird since I didn't shave yesterday.
Maybe something about this combo just doesn't agree with my skin.

NYGuy
NYGuy,
Well - do you dry your comb after use? I would imagine that if left wet - it would prove to be problematic, however my horn handled razors never get wet when I shave, and I throughly dry my razor after each use. I have had horn handled razors for years - with nary a problem.... in fact one of my best razors is well over 100 years old and has a Pyrenean Ibex horn handle (which is now extinct) and it seems to be in mighty good shape.
So far as I can tell - if you treat it right - it'll outlive you.

Thayers Witch Hazel (original)
Today was my first time trying out Mama Bear's soap and first time with witch hazel as well, and I must say, it's been my best shave to date (not that I've had that many dates  )
Took hot shower before with herbal essesnces hair conditioner on my face for the duration of the shower, and I do believe it really helped with the shave.
Lather was overflowing, warm & toasty, and smelled GREAT! I took 3 passes today, N-S, ATG, and then N-S again. BBS
To end it, I splashed the witch hazel on, and I prefer it to the AoS ASB that I have.

Nice and simple today. A 1-pass with the feather due to time constraints and a slightly sore face. My face feels good and isn't at all sore though I'd need another pass to call it BBS
The cork trick on the blade:
http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=236#11
really worked for me. So smooth, although I wonder whether true Feather pros would say I'm selling out
I used a Slant/Feather combo and Taylors Avocado today as well. I too found my skin feeling a bit raw which is weird since I didn't shave yesterday.

I've been mostly shaving with straights for the past week, with reasonably good results - virtually no nicks or cuts - until this morning!
A momentary lapse in concentration and the next thing I knew I had a 1.5" slice in my cheek. I realized what happened immediately - no pain (that came with the alum and A/S!), but just felt the razor cut into my cheek - I actually had a rivulet of blood running down my cheek.
After all was said and done, its not too bad and should be healed up in a couple of days - certainly a strong incentive to pay more attention when using a straight!

I'm having a cataract operation on my right eye tomorrow, and I needed a shave to calm me down and comfort me, so I grabbed the Erasmic stick--what a feeling, so pleasant.

Tried something new this morning -- the conditioner on the beard throughout the shower trick. Didn't seem to help or hurt... will continue to do for the next couple days to gauge any change.
It took a lot more Mr. Taylor cream from my sample than I'm used to, to get a good thick hydrated lather... but it's probably just me. VERY nice scent on the Mr. Taylor. I may have to pick up a tube of that. :biggrin1:

Hi Jim,
it's a 1995 Honda VFR750 (tiny pic in my avatar). I'm just getting it ready for its winter hibernation. Changed the oil and filter, fairings off for a good clean and a spray all over the engine with ACF50 anti-corrosion gloop. Got some Hel braided brake lines to fit over the winter too.
Pete.

Nice bike and older too!
I've had BMWs. Mostly /7s. I never put mine away though as I rode them year round. Winters aren't too bad in Boston so I could get away with it. I remember riding in a snow storm once where I had my feet down almost the whole ride as outriggers. I thought I was the only motorcycle on the road until a guy on a Kawasaki passed me. He had his feet down just like I did.
Great stuff!

and I stopped or else I would have been too BBS for my Xmas dinner tommorow with the company so I stopped so I can grow some stubble and do a pre dinner shave tommorow. 3 passes today would result in no need to shave tommorow
quite impressive paki cream lathers big merinque style left on the beard for 3-4 minutes to weaken beard.
2 passes just with the grain.

Very quick 2 pass shave after digging the HD out of the cupboard as it's been a couple of months since I last shaved with it. Nice job, although BBS would have required at least an extra pass. Think I'll keep the HD out for a while and catch a few more shaves with it
The Erasmic cream is very nice, I've shaved with it about 3 times this week. The scent seems different to the stick, more Brut-like (from what I remember of Brut from way back) clean and crisp and I really like it. Lathers nicely straight on the face, I've not tried it with a bowl yet. I think it could easily become my go-to cream.

Really nice 3 pass shave today (with / across / against the grain) with the HD
First attempt with the Euro palmolive cream. Overall I think I prefer Erasmic, but the shave was nice enough. Scent was subtle and not at all overpowering. Noticed a couple of tiny nicks which is unusual for me even with a Feather DE blade. I'm not going to blame the cream at this stage though, as I was stretching the lather a bit doing 3 passes lathering straight to face and relying on what was left in the brush.
no shave today, I'm feeling weak and wobbly from my eye operation, the effect of it kicked in today. All I did was take a warm bath, and put on some moisturizer and deodorant. Damn, my beard's rougher than hell now, but tomorrow, I'll shave.

I have come to the conclusion that Feather blades, at least for my beard type, perform better in a less aggressive razor. The last 3 shaves, with the Feather in the Classic, have been superb. Better than with the Feather in the Futur, even at a setting as low as 1.5.

Nice, close, 3-pass shave today. Best shave I've had with the T&H. I love soaps, but despite reading Scotto's tutorial, and generating what seems to be excellent lather in a bowl, I seem to get a better shave lathering on my face instead. Probably need more practise !

I have not decided yet. I used it with the Olivia's soap and only got a thin lather. I think it had too much water and it's the first time I have used this soap. I will try it with SCS or Mama Bears soap next time.

Hmmmm. My first ever experience with a Feather. I think I must have been too scared or something, because this is the worst shave I've had, even since Day 1. It's not close at ALL. I think I need to work on my technique a lot more, and not be consciously afraid of slicing myself open. I tried to concentrate and go slow, and around my sideburns is BBS, neck is nice... which is a change... but for some reason my jawline and chin can still visibly see stubble... even after 4 passes.
I must have sheared off skin only, because my face is still tingling.... I think I might have had a reaction to the EO in the QED Sandalwood soap, which if it's true, would be strange, as today is my 3rd day using it... never had this tingling before. The Proraso definitely helped in that department.
No nicks or cuts though, so we'll give Day 2 a try! Maybe I got a bum Feather blade??

I don't know how many feather blades are duff.
With my experience so far (one blade, six shaves) I've found that the blade is sharper than anything else (Derby, Merkur, Wilkinson) so it's really important to apply 'zero pressure' and let the blade and razor do the work. It really does cut with no effort. Also the blade I am using has become more forgiving with time whilst still shaving close with zero effort. I'd stick with the same blade for the week to see if the same happens for you. Perhaps you are being very cautious to not cut yourself, better to have an intact face than be BBS for now.
Good luck.

This was my first time with a Feather blade no cuts, no nicks very sharp, I did not feal any irritation or tugging that I sometimes get with Merkur blades hardly even knew I was shaving, I got BBS on the cheeks but the neck still needs work (I was taking it easy because of trying a new blade) I will stay posted on how the other blades in the sample pack work for me. Once again a big thank you to LetterK for the blades.

Joel, what is that brush?
Glad to see that you got one of those Japanese razors Joel. How did it shave?
Really a superb shaver.... super odd though. The blade is mighty short - so it takes longer to shave that with a euro style. I will say this.... it took awhile but it was a hell of a lot of fun. I have some more on the way and I am going to try to get some of the ultra-high end swordsmiths in Japan to make me razors to import here to the US. Should be fun! :thumbup1:

There's just something about shaving with a simple straight piece of steel that's even more attractive than the traditional European style. Please do keep us informed of how it goes Joel. I was so caught up with the razor that I missed the B&B brush altogether!

Oh I've tried many a time...with no luck. Somehow, he manages a good shave with that crap. No irritation at all, smooth result. And in a matter of a few minutes. I guess I'm just glad its not an electric razor:eek: That would be awful. His usual razor is actually the yellow bic disposable.

The royal lotions are quite nice.... I mean they are nothing to do backflips over, but they are a fine aftershave splash. I don't think it is as good as say Musgo Real, but it is a nice aftershave in its own right. The Muske fragarance is particularly wonderful.
Yeah - the MOP dovo is a beaut.... unfortunatly I've never taken a picture of it that does the straight justice. When you see it side by side with my genuine MOP shaving brush - it's really quite breathtaking.
