View Full Version : Yes Dear! What job drives you crazy at home?

Jim

I am a fairly handy guy around the house, I enjoy keeping the ol casa del Goose in good shape. BUT (and you knew that was coming.)
I hate to hang curtain rods and window treatments, It seems I just get everything up and squared away, level and plumb when it NEEDS to be replaced, of course the rods need to be changed as well, patch plaster prime and paint-start again. AHHHHHH.

What job drives you crazy?

mowing the lawn. I hate it so much.

As a female with a hubby to do all those honey-do jobs..... Which reminds me he has new curtain rods to hang for those new drapes in the living room. I have two huge windows in my living room, one faces east the other south so I'm lucky enough to get morning and afternoon sun. So I've bought drapes to help keep the heat out in the summer. That way my central air doesn't need to work so hard. *grins*

But i absolutely hate doing laundry. It wasn't bad when I was single or after I got married. But now three kids later....... Oh i hate doing laundry. I would rather be making soap!

While we're at it, why is it WE who have to clean the hair out of the drain? It's not our hair. It's not physically taxing. I don't have any jobs I really hate, but what - can't stand is when you're the ONLY one who does something. Like filling up ice cube trays. Orrrr, cleaning hair out of the drain.

That was my mom's philosophy! I was like the foreman, and my younger siblings were delegated, usually while I made dinner. I'm thankful for the training.

Thanks for reminding me of kitty litter, black! I forgot about that joyous task, since I haven't had any felines in years.

My wife does the following: laundry (wash, dry, and fold), mows the lawn, pays the bills, makes the shopping list, decides expenses, plans trips, waters the various flora, puts away dishes, plays lead bass in Elven Rodeo (our Rock Band 2 band), kicks my ass whenever I need it (which is often).

I do the following: wash dishes, tend to the cats and dog, weeding, sweeping/vacuuming, clean the bathroom/toilet, drive us everywhere (she can't drive stick), deal with garbage/recycling, hold purses, play lead guitar in Elven Rodeo, act like a pain in the A (which is often).

That said (and there are many chores we share that we BOTH hate), I really can't stand that I am the ONLY one to ever was a damn dish...ever...still and all, I can't complain...she does far more that I would hate to do than I have to put up with. She's a saint.

The only job I helped with that I didn't like was to replace a head gasket on a honda wagon just because I have smaller hands.

I also do not have a good command of the language used to work on cars. 'Dammit' just isn't forceful enough.

Jim I hate to say that just about any job does. I have a serious back issue that puts me on limited duty at work. But at home, the wife does not remember said injury and asks me to do all sorts of stuff that work forbids me to do.

I have a similar problem. Too much hockey, football, and falling off of things as a kid have left me unable to stand for more than about three hours without needing to inhale anti-inflammatory medication like Skittles. I work on my feet most of the day so I get home in a good deal of pain.

It never fails that on days when it is quite bad, Something will "need" to be done "right now" and can't wait until the medication takes hold. The really irritating part is, once I've hobbled into wherever it is that needs attention, being told something to the effect of, "Oh. I forgot about your legs hurting. It can wait a while." That's irritating.

Other than that, I'll have to go with blinds or curtains. Trying to level something that long one end at a time drives me bonkers.

Yarrrr..folding laundry...hate it!

Also, getting up on a ladder to remove the air-conditioning filters (we have big-ass 'mini'-split units).

There's also a VERY nasty blackwater inspection pit outside that gets blocked on a regular basis, and guess who gets to pull the hatch and unblock it? I have to breathe through the mouth to handle that one.

Anything that involves me standing on a stepladder.

Most household chores, if tackled in a methodical manner, with the right equipment and supplies, really aren't too bad. Rubber gloves and kneepads make scrubbing the floor behind the toilet (almost) a pleasure.

Tip: Next time you mow the lawn - try wearing earplugs or "muff"-type hearing protection. Exposing your ears to an hour or two of lawn-mower roar makes the job considerably more tiring. Try it and see the difference.

But I've never liked ladders. I'm fine with airplanes, helicopters, tall buildings, mountains, skiing, etc. But ladders give me the willies. So dusting the ceiling fan blades or cleaning out the gutters makes me quite uncomfortable.

I'm with Chip on this one. I simply cannot understand how two people make so much laundry!

Oh, and to top it off my wife has "ways" to fold her stuff...mine, as long as its folded...who cares?!?!?

SWMBO and I live in separate apartments... in the same apartment complex. Thus we each spend a lot of time at the others apartment, though I'd probably say she comes to me more than I go to her. Generally I make the beds, drive everywhere, and cook most meals. I would do them all whether I were with her or not, so I don't mind. However, I will agree that folding laundry is no fun, but I solve that problem by hanging all of my clothes!

That reminds me of a funny story... I thought I'd be a sweet and considerate husband by doing the laundry while Mrs. Chip was out with a friend. I admit I felt no small amount of pride in the fact that I remembered to sort all her clothes by color. I learned two valuable lessons shortly after she came home though... 1) There are some clothes that require the delicate cycle. 2) Don't put a wool sweater in the dryer.

I find it's more trouble than it's worth to hang pants, towels, bed sheets, etc... though we do hang our shirts at least.

I'm noticing that laundry and pulling hair out of drains are the top two issues in this thread. Regarding the hair in drains, I think I have a solution for you guys... instead of plucking it, just trim it!

Well most often I don't have to fold laundry which I am very thankful for. Most of the time I don't mind the things I have to do around the house as long as I'm in the mood. The two that seem to get me most often are doing dishes and mowing the yard, push mowing our large yard can be a pain, I think we need a rider.

After living in an apartment for fifteen years I'm still getting re-accustomed to household chores, so nothing has really begun to stick in my craw just yet.

The one thing I always hated growing up was cutting the lawn. I was thrilled the day our lawn mower was stolen and my mom hired someone to do it rather than buying a new one. I've hired someone as well just because I don't want to spend my limited free time mowing the lawn.

So, I found it pretty amusing yesterday - as I removed some of the prior owners' hideous attempts at "landscaping" - that I'm actually starting to enjoy other types of yard work, and am looking forward to doing some other stuff next weekend. I guess the difference is that mowing the lawn is just a chore, while the other stuff is really more directed toward creating an environment that the family and I will find more appealing.

It's funny. I hated all yard work as a kid. When I bought my first house, I found myself taking pride in having my bushes well trimmed. I never mowed that lawn once, however. This house, I have expanded to taking pride in the flower beds when they look nice, which isn't often. I even like to look at my freshly mowed lawn. I even found myself doing something I am ashamed to admit. I...I watered my lawn. :crying: Now, I find myself wanting to plant a small garden. Oh Lord, what has become of me?

Gardening work. I hate it and my wife loves it. She gets the light duty stuff and gets rave reviews from the neighbors for how good things look. I have to do anything that requires heavy lifting and we seem to have a lot of things that require heavy lifting. She get compliments and I get some sore back muscles.

If I had my druthers, I would have Astro Turf instead of St. Augustine grass. I sadly do not have my druthers. I could go on, but who wants to read a lot of whining?

Yup. This, or the pile of smaller bags next to the trash can. What nobody can lend a hand?
Folding clothes is no big deal, but it can get tedious. I usually just do it while I'm watching TV or something. Dishes are fine for me, especially with a dishwasher. Most things I am fine to do, as long as it is shared. When it is isn't, then I have a problem. Like the drains. I hate when they play the "woman" card, when it clearly isn't necessary. I forgot about this job. My best friend absolutely hates it. We always had to rake and bag when I stayed the night at his house back in school. His yard had 42 trees in it, in a regular neighborhood. There'd be a foot of leaves throughout the yard. We had so many bags sanitation told us no more than 10 at a time. I think we had put out 23 the week before.
