View Full Version : Pics of the world's crappiest coffee.

Well, since this appears to be a forum of coffee lovers (there's at least a few of you out there), I thought I'd post some pics from a week ago when Joel came over and we had some really crappy coffee.

Last year I was given some "Kopi Luwak" for Christmas. Kopi Luwak is coffee from the plantations in Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra, in Indonesia. What makes Kopi Luwak unique is that it's found in the excrement of the Palm Civet, also known as a Luwak. The story goes, the Luwak only eats the ripest, choicest coffee cherries. These cherries then pass through the Luwak, and the cherries are subjected to stomach acids and enzymes which help ferment the choice beans in a unique way. The Luwak isn't able to digest the coffee cherry, so it passes through intact, without the bean inside ever coming into contact with Luwak.....poop.

Now for some pics:

The potables (some potent).

Beans about to meet their maker (notice, all bean, no dung!)

In this one it's not so obvious that there isn't any "business" brewing in there, but trust me, it's still all bean (and arrowhead water). I've made the Kopi in a French Press before, but the simple Milita drip brewer has provided consistantly great brews for this bean.

Some pics of the final product (with accompanying Cognac and glazed strawberries). I put mine in a glass mug for the picture.

All in all, this is some very flavorful, very potent coffee (or at least it was for the first several months). The beans in the picture are almost a year old, so there was definitely some degradation in flavor and potency, but it was still a surprisingly good cup of joe for how old the beans are. When not being used, they've been vacuum-packed and frozen to prolong their life. Unfortunately, I don't know what kind of availability there is for this coffee, as mine arrived just shortly before the tsunami hit that area.

In conclusion, it's one tasty brew. I don't think I'd shell out the bucks for this coffee myself, but it's fun to be able to try this oddball kind of stuff.

Interesting, Nick. Coffee with a side of dookie. What will they think of next?

You know , I notice when I eat corn, things seem... ahem.... rather undigested. Perhaps I can retire from my job and sell the resulting product as a gourmet product. Scotto niblets or some such.

Good Grief Nick,
If you're going to sterilize the beans at least use Remy Martin! Geez, some people have no taste! Those lads in the Sulawesi Straights that harvest that stuff are very upbeat about their work. Just ask them about their job and they will tell you it is always picking up! :001_07:

I've know of, but never had Kopi Luwak. This makes me think of "Worlds Worst Jobs" - "Tell me Sir, what do you do for a living?"

"I collect, sort and remove Luwak dung from coffee beans."

Hmmmmm......yeah there's a job for 'ya ! Bring much of your work home ??

Just out of curiosity Nick, how much did that coffee cost per pound? And where did you buy it?

Nick
12-06-2005, 09:12 PM
Art,

When the coffee was bought, it was $300/lb. That bag was a quarter pound. It was thankfully a gift (I certainly wouldn't drop that kind of money on coffee), so I'm not sure where exactly it was purchased from.

That kind of money would be better spent on shaving gear and it would last a lot longer too.

After reflecting upon this thread there are several things that come to mind, most of which are unfit for further pondering. One, though, keeps coming back to mind so I must share it with you. Many years ago when flat track horse racing was all the rage in the US, the phrase "Straght from the horse's mouth" came into common usage. For instance, "Hey where did you get that trifecta?" "Straight from the horse's mouth!" After what has transpired here, I can see someone question Nick, our noble site tech, "Hey Nick, where did you get this coffee?" "Straight from the cat's...."

Rather assinine question wouldn't you say? Serving one of life's most important functions, it reminds me of a story about the body and its parts trying to decide who was to be the boss. But more of that later..

I am amazed a scatological post; I mean a serious discussion about coffee post; from 2005 was uneartherd and will probably keep going for a few days or even weeks. Life springs eternal on the internet.

Like last week I just got an e-mail about an "Nth cubed" virus that will melt your computer chip. Wow, pretty fantastic and scary.

I must confess to enjoying the thread, especially Ron's graphic. I think this must be the kind of coffee Mr Hanley drinks. OK, stop Dave, that will really get this thread off track....

The "pour over filter holder"? Don't laugh- it's the depths of low tech, but it's one of the best ways to brew a cuppa. You have total control over temperature and timing.

I really wonder about this. All kidding aside, how does one distinguish civet dung from say, ocelot dung, or orangutan dung for that matter. Now, I know that certain animals do leave telltale scat, but to find 1lb of coffee-laden civet scat one would have to constantly scour the jungle for cast-aside excrement. Unless Sulawesi and Java are just absolutely lousy with coffee crazed civets, it seems likely to me that the civets are eating the choicest berries, but rather, are being kept on a poop coffee farm in which civets are fed coffee berries and the collection process is less, shall we say, left to chance.

Just some reflections I had when pondering pooping wild cats and collection of their feces.

Easy. Civet dung has cherries in it.

I broke down and bought half a pound from Animal Coffee, splitting it with a friend. Brewed it in my French Press, and I must confess it was truly excellent coffee. Not the best coffee I've ever tasted, but certainly right up there. Smooth, earthy, with an astonishingly long finish. My wife, who usually adds cream (not milk,) to her coffee says that this is meant to be consumed black. We will have our third and final cup tomorrow morning. Don't think I'll buy it again, but it was one of the items on my bucket list, and frankly, I'm glad I did it.
