View Full Version : Super Iridium blades

Since the demise of the Gillette Platinum "Swede", I have been trying out currently available blades to replace the "Swede" as my favorite.
I have tried the Gillette Sharp Edge yellow pack, Astra Superiors, revisted the Feather and the Red Personna, and finally the Super Iridium.
We all know how subjective blade choices are, but to my mind, the Super Iridium is the best of the lot, for a few reasons:
It is sharp. I believe that it's sharpness is very close, if not equal to the Feather.
It shaves smoothly in most of my razors. In my EJ Chatsworth or my Futur it gave consistantly smooth comfortable shaves. Smoother than any other blade I've tried, except for the "Swede".
The edge stays good for a while. In my Futur, I got six good shaves. In my Chatsworth, I got about the same, or maybe five.
For reference sake, I get two very good shaves from a Feather and three from a Red Personna or Crystal.
The only downside I have found is that it does have the same annoying glue spots that the Gillette Sharp Edge has. The Iridiums, I think, are made in the same St Petersberg plant as the Sharp Edges.
By the way, I feel that the Iridium shades the Sharp Edge a little in both sharpness and smoothness.
So, until somebody digs up the old Gillette "Swede" process and starts making and selling them, my new favorite blade is the Super Iridium.

You should post this as a review on the reviews section of the board. Nicely put. I'm a big fan of the Iridiums too.

I would love to try some of these blades. I've searched ebay and didn't find any and I can't seem to find a canadian store that sells them on or offline.
Anyone know of good place for me to get a hold of some?

I just tried out a Iridium Super blade last night and it was the best shave I think I have ever had. The blade is very sharp, but it is so so so smooth. It really just felt effortless, and I got a very close shave with no irritation.
I only have 1 of these blades, but thankfully when I ordered a brush from the unnamable place in the UK I did order a pack of these, although now I wish I would have ordered more!

Got to agree I have 300 of these and apart from being sharp they are consistent, not had a duff blade yet.
I had surgery a while back and had to change the dressings daily, I spoke nicely to the nurse and she gave me a couple of boxes of these to get rid of the glue left by the dressings http://www.gpsupplies.com/Product/Consumables/Adhesive_Removers/Appeel_Medical_Adhesive_Remover_wipes.aspx
(also availabe as a spray)
These take the glue off with one wipe. Obviously I will not buy any more but I have a small air tight tub and one of thse wipes can last through a dozen or so blades, I have about 6 boxes (about 300 wipes) so enough to last some time.

Generally because of rules infractions on the part of the vendor. Usually because they are not following the guidelines about where to post their FS threads and the like. There are others as well...

This week I've been using a Polsilver blade which is a tad below the Iridium in sharpness and in the "sweet spot" for me. The Iridium was smooth, but unless I'm at the top of my technique, I can't avoid nicks.
The Polsilver shares the glue spots with the Iridium and 7o'clock yellow, and was likely made in the same plant, though it's now discontinued. The glue spots are big, and as shown in the picture in this thread, encroach on the edge. I've been using a Schick Krona this week and the glue spots on the Polsilver cause the blade to stick to the underside of the doors, making it difficult to open the razor.
I have stashes of other blades not quite as sharp that suit me just fine. The glue spots are a deal breaker for me. I'll use up what Polsilvers and Iridiums I have some day, but won't be buying more.
Here's an interesting observation/question:
I used to use Super Iridiums exclusively, then I couldn't get them anymore, now I can get them again. However...
I just got a bunch of packs of them and the box and wrappers are sealed and say "Super Iridium", but the blades are stamped "PolSilver". I tried a sample from four different packs of nine that I received.
Anybody know what the deal is with that?
I've noticed that the "W" graphic on the SI's and the Pol's is the same. Are they both made by the same company or something?
BTW: You're right -- the Pol's (if that's really what I've got, although dressed up in Iridium's clothing) are less sharp than I remember the Iridiums to be, but they shave smoothly and well for me overall. I'll have to order some Iridiums from somewhere else and see if they're stamped, you know, with the actual name of the actual company that made them.....

I never got to use them, but I know the Polsilvers were very highly regarded blades.
Perhaps there is some lineage there.

I've noticed that the "W" graphic on the SI's and the Pol's is the same. Are they both made by the same company or something?
The "W" is for Wizamet, a company in Lodz, Poland that Gillette acquired from the government there in 1992. Once Gillette took over, they stopped making DE razors (A Wizamet Junior razor is listed in reviews here). Until recently the plant was making the two Wizamet blades, Iridium and Polsilver, along with the Gillette "Swedes."
After P&G took over Gillette, I suspect, the decision was made to convert the plant in Lodz to production of Mach3's and Fusions. Production of the two Wizamet blades and the "Swedes" was moved to St. Petersburg, Russia.
The pack of Iridiums I have has "Made in Russia" on it, but there is no indication on the Polsilvers. The glue spots are the giveaway, same as on the Iridiums, and the 7o'clock yellows I have.
The plant in St. Petersburg makes a lot of different blade brands, including Astras, Sputniks, and others going back to the old days. Adding three more blade brands from Lodz, plus the on-again/off-again discontinuation of the Wizamet brands, may have caused confusion in the plant, leading to Polsilvers in Iridium clothing.

RUFUST445, Thanks. That is some really good info. That clears up a few things.
I kind of imagined tgat the "Swedes" Polsivers and Super Iridiums had all been made at the Lodz plant.
Anyhow, I sure hope they keep making the S.I.'s I feel that they truly are the best blade made today. I could live without the glue dots though.

It appears that Iridiums are now on the list of 'to-try' blades... I will by trying blades for the next 20 years at that rate...

Iridium Supers are great blades. I agree that they are a nice replacement for the Swedes. I'm on my 7th shave with one blade and it's still going.
Speaking of hoops to jump through, I find it hilarious when I use that Vendors shave cream and my shave of the day comes out like this: ********** Spearmint Shave Cream...

Amazing, the hoops we must jump through just to let someone know where shaving products can be purchased.
My biggest stash is the Treet Durasharp Classic, a carbon steel blade coated with PTFE that lasts almost like a stainless blade.
I don't think most members here are even aware of this blade because the two vendors are banned from B&B. (Would be interesting to see what happens if someone posted a review of it).
A Shark blade I tried recently was sent as a sample with an order last year from the other vendor besides the one referred to above. Unfortunately his site is down indefinitely.
I got eight shaves out of the Shark, and ordered more from B&B member Melyus, who is more active over at SMF.
Methinks people here are even less aware of the Shark blade.

The iridiums are my every day blade. Sharp and smooth. Glides effortlessly across the face. Easily lasts one week with close shaves 1-7. Available from the banned English vendor. Check the smf board for details.
The shark also provides wonderful shaves. $12 for 100 blades is a better deal than derbys. Provides a better quality shave.

I believe that the Treet Durasharp Classic and the Shark blade can both be purchased at shoeboxshaveshop.com. Of course from what I heard this vendor received his stock from one of the vendors that was banned from B&B. But, nevertheless shoeboxshaveshop is a great vendor to work with. I ordered from him recently and he had quick shipping and responed quickly to email.
So hopefully this vendor will begin getting talked about more and people can try some other blades.

Amazing, the hoops we must jump through just to let someone know where shaving products can be purchased. There is a reason for that regarding certain vendors.
As far as banned vendors, I'm quite OK with the B&B policy. Enterprising shavers can always find decent blades; you just have to be resourceful. It is not a big deal. There are other forums.

Antdad, I would gladly take some microscope photos of the Shark if I had some.
I may be reordering some SI's from the fellow in South Surrey, UK. If he sells Sharks, I will get some.
I do have one slight problem though. The company I work for is going through some tough times. I and many others will be furloughed (means vacation without pay) for most of the month of July. I won't have access to the photo microscope during this time.
Thanks,

I'm still enjoying the Super Iridium. I think I've used at least 10 of them by now. If you decide to give these a try be sure to use one for at least two shaves before you decide you don't like them. I find that they are at their best by the second or third shave and maintain that fine edge for at least 2 more shaves.

When I was in Moscow, Russia last year I didn't see any DE razors or blades where I was at. I was so tempted to shaving my beard off so I didn't stand out as much as I did. I looked around and ran into the Mach's and some other brand. They came in at a hefty price which made the price of them in the USA seem cheap and thus, I never did shave other there. I will look even more the next trip I go back next year and see what I can find on the open market.

Yes I also agree. The glue spots are pretty annoying. I have found that if you put he glue spot side up it doesn't gunk up your razor too bad.
Super Iridiums surely do shave nicely though, and since John at WCS started carrying them, buying them is easy.

Has anyone compared these to the Gillette Platinums in the blue/grey box that are made in the same factory? I like the Plats a little more than the yellow 7 O'clocks.

Excellent all around. No pulling at all. I can't wait to see how the shaves are by the end of the week.

Just had my 9th shave on the same blade with one of these and it's still great.
I'm going to ride it out till the end of the week and see how it ends up.

I use the 7 O'Clock SharpEdge, Iridiums, and Perma-sharps. Honestly, these three shave about the same. If anything the Perma-sharps are a tad smoother than the other two.
Thank you for your reply.
I assume, these blades are the same with different printings on them to be marked in different countries...??
I find the Perma-Sharps smooth and sharp and they are almost my favourite blade.

I tried one of these (from a razor sample pack) with a Muhle R89 and I must say it was horrible. Luckly it didn't cut my face, but it didn't shaved properly too. Everytime the blade tried to cut the hair, in fact it pulled it. So the safety razor wouldn't glide in my face, but it would shake. I could only shave twice, because I could not stand it pulling the hair instead of cutting it.

Astra Superior is also my go to blade.
I have some Iridiums around but haven't used them for a long time. I remember though that the Astra SP were better for me than the Iridiums.
I think I'm gonna try an Iridium tommorrow again to compare. I recently tried Feather's again, and while they were very good, the Astra shave for me is just a little better. Gillette yellow was the other blade in my "final four."
I don't really cut myself with any blade and I can get the same closeness with any blade, but the Astra SP are silk-like smooth on my face, I never get any irritation at all. It doesn't even feel like I shaved and that's no exaggeration. This is the deciding factor for me.

Yes I am using the new design of the Muhle razor(a.k.a. "new Muhle 2009 head").
I had great results with Iridium blades both in the R89 and R106 Muhle razors.
I remember I tried the Astra in the Merkur HD razor, but it was really rough..

I had a shave with an Iridium Super this morning. It was a fine, fine shave no doubt. Obviously among the best. Very close and no irritation as I am accustomed to. I'll keep it in the razor and test it out over the next few shaves.
I used it, as I do all my blades, in a Merkur sledgehammer slant. The weight of the razor and the angled head make shaving almost too easy. I think this razor can make ALMOST any blade shine.
Man, once you get to the top it's really hard to discriminate between blades. I find the top 4 or 5 blades for me have more similarities than differences. It really becomes splitting hairs to compare them.

I'm using the Muhle R89 (new Muhle head) safety razor as well. A friend of mine tried Iridium too and he didn't liked, he said the shave was rough and cutted the face. Like I said in the previous post, Astra is much better for me, very smooth. But I still have another 5 different blades to test :biggrin1:
I used only one Iridium blade so far (in a Merkur 34C), and my experience is not so bad. The first two shaves ended with many cuts and some razor burn, but the next two were pretty decent. The reason? Applying next to no pressure. I was getting used to the "blank Personnas", and those blades are quite forgiving. The Iridiums are much sharper and demand your respect :biggrin1:.

So I beleive that YMMV thing is true after all
I think that the differences are due to our different techniques. Many people, many styles of shaving. There are quite some variables. The way you hold the razor, the way you make the strokes, blade angle etc...
I just had a good shave with the iridium(used x5 so far). they are MY "to go" blade.
I hope you find your best blade for the Muhle R89. And make sure you leave the feather for last. By then, you will have a better technique. And when you get consistent shaves, go back and try the Iridium again, or other blades for that matter.
Cheers,
Tiberiu

Yes, they are indeed terrific!!
Lately I wanted to know if there is better blade than Iridium. The Feather blade is sharper and cuts closely than the Iridium. But only for 1 or 2 shaves. After that it is a real pain to shave with a Feather.
But the Iridium gave me the smoothes, and enjoyable shaves to date.
Plus they last more than the rest!
I want to post a new interesting thread between two types of Iridiums!!! I have 2 packs of Iridiums that have different packages. Subtle differences but still.
I want to compare the two types. I don't know if there are any differences.
But I want to take some photos first!
Please be patient friends..

I ordered 2 weeks ago a pack of 10 blades Iridium, because everybody says so much good about it. I was rather disappointed. I find that they do not cut enough. For example, I use Astra Platinium and 7o'clock yellow clock, and I find them much superior.

Nobody can garuantee that the blade will work for everybody! Sorry to hear that.
You might try it again sometimes, or perhaps in a different razor.
But hey, look on the bright side. You only bought a pack of 10. Good that you didn't go and buying bulk.
I have very good results with Iridium. And one of the worst blades were the 7o'clock Yellow pack. Didn't like them too much.
YMMV for sure.

It really becomes splitting hairs to compare them.
Isn't that the point? :001_tt2:

I agree with you, the Super Iridiums are my favorite. I have about 500 of them now :-) I have heard that they are not in production anymore, is that not true? My normal source does not stock them anymore.

Yup, Iridiums are not produced anymore. I first discovered this on Bruce on Shaving, but I've seen it on this forum and in several other places as well.

Sadly I'm not in love with Iridiums either. No cuts but man it took way too much effort, dragging, missed stubble everywhere even after multiple passes. I like current production Russian Yellows and Blues way better and they're cheaper...

Don't like 'em? Sell 'em to me. I'm always looking to up my stock. :w00t:

I just received a 100 Iridiums and had my 3rd shave with them last night. I found them to be a bit sharper and smoother than my go-to blade, Red IP. If the blades were readily available, I would make them my go-to. But since they are not, I'll ration what I have and stick with the Red IPs.

I will gladly swap you one for one (all my yellows for those nasty SI's of yours), even up. :001_tongu

I have tried both SIs and Polsilvers in a blind test with two different razors. To my face, they are not the same. Polsilvers are decent blades, but are nowhere near as sharp, smooth, or long-lasting as SIs. I would approach this kind of pitch with caution.

Understood. I'd be hesitant to but 100 blades, only to find out they're not what I want. I'm still hoping that Jopo from the other thread offers them in smaller quantities. Maybe if enough of us ask him?

 I only have 2, Rasindot was kind enough to do a blade exchang with me and after swaping out razors, I had a much more enjoyable second shave with it.

Just used the Iridium blades for the first and last time. A gent was nice enough to pif me some and for that I'm greatful of. My set up consisted of my trusty Merkur 180 and Razorock Fresco soap. My initial impression of this blade was how smooth it was. But no matter what I did I could not get BBS shave. Even after six passes and a touch up my face had had enough and I. Settled on a damn near BBS. Sharp isn't a word I'd use to describe these blades. There on par with Derby for smoothness. Being of American Asian decent I dont exactly have tough hair. Oh well, back to personna and Gillette silver blue. My face is sore. What a blade.
