View Full Version : Life After Old Old Spice
I alluded to this situation in another thread and after doing some product sniffing today, I thought i'd ask the educated masses what they think.
I'm trying to only have one soap and one cream and I have settled on using Proraso cream for warmer days, and on colder days I like Shulton Old Spice soap. A lot. The scent and the performance. If used as my cool weather soap, I reckon I have enough to last me a fair while, but what do I do when I have exhausted the stash of my beloved Spicy?
Do I...
- Try not to think of the scent (which I do not especially like, I must say) and go for the nearest great performer of old school tallow goodness, the ever-popular Tabac? I took a whiff of the Tabac AS today and I still don't particularly like it, but the smell will mostly be gone after I rinse my face.
- Plump for something like Mama Bear's Aged Spice. I like MB products, I love the OS scent, but scented glycerine soaps can irritate my face after shaving every day... Do I just suck it up and take it like a man? A red faced man? Or do I go back to alternate day shaving (wimp)?
- Carry on with something I know and like, but isn't quite as good as Shulton Old Spice, in Cella soap? It's a great performer - tied in third place on my top 5 along with Trumper Rose, but maybe now I just crave something that works ever so slightly better for me?
- Use my remaining time to search for, buy and hoarde every puck of Shulton OS soap I come across in the hope I can constantly top up my supply?
Sorry for the long post!

It took me ten years to get through a case of Old Spice soap. Now I use more Williams than anything, as it's the most readily available and closest in performance to OS that I've found.

A pucks cheaper than a cup of coffee which is a bonus. On its own, i havn't been able to get the water balance right, but i've been using it for super lathering, and my o my it is a beautiful thing.
Sadly Williams seems to be unavailable in my fair isle. Is it worth the effort for an overseas order? I know it gets somewhat mixed reviews.

The Tabac soap smells very different to the AS, I hated the scent of the AS but love the soap and I think you would also if you like OS as I do and it is of course one of the best performers.
Another option is that Honeybees do a Old Spice equivalent but I haven't had a sniff of that one yet but it is a great performer even without tallow. Check the reviews for that, quite reasonable price.

Robb, does Williams really rival the old Old Spice for you? My vintage puck of Old Spice lathers into a thick creamy dense foam just by looking at it. It rivals or exceeds Tabac in my hands. My Williams experience has not been in the same league. Should I revisit my Williams puck? Are you using a vintage Williams soap, too? Just curious!

I would try AOS soaps. I'm a big fan of the Shulton Old Spice, and I find the AOS to be almost as good. I personally like the Sandalwood scent. If you want Tabac without the scent, try and get your hands on some Irisch Moos. It works very much like Tabac, with (IMHO) A much better scent.

Heck, call me crazy, but I get better performance out of Williams than I do Tabac. :w00t:
I have used vintage Williams but there's not much of a difference in my eyes from the modern Williams. I have found that unless you pour boiling hot water on your puck and let it sit submerged for several minutes before use, it isn't very good a soap. It's way more finicky than Old Spice, which was ready to go right out of the box (or mug).
But, once I figured out that REALLY hot water was the key I had no problem. It also responds better to boar than it does badger. Try boiling a small pot of water on the stove and pour it in your mug, completely submerging the soap, and let it sit while you're in the shower.

Hmm, have to try that. It is so cheap that I won't worry about dissolving away a good part of the puck!
