View Full Version : How many shaves from a blade?

Not going for a record, but I'd be interested to know how many shaves people get from their blades.

I got my fourth shave from an Astra platinum, today.

It would have been BBS everywhere, if my technique was better, but as it is, I got 70% BBS, 20%DFS and 10% acceptable.

Best part is, that it feels like there is more to come... :001_smile

With my feathers, I generally get about four shaves out of 'em. Any more than that, I'm asking for trouble.

IKWYM, I have a fresh blade in the Brit tech, ready to go, if shave number 5 starts getting "iffy".

I toss each blade after 2 uses. I'm not interested in trying to set any records, nor is blade-life an area where I feel I need to scrimp and be economical.

Blades are cheap. Blades are readily available. Blades are designed to be DISPOSABLE.

I get your POV, however, without scrimping, I won't toss something, if it's still performing its allotted task well.

To compare: I found Derbys to be useless, half way through a second shave, so they were replaced.:frown:

I just happen to be rather chuffed with the Astra plats lasting so well. :001_smile

Iridiums easily last one week.

I usually get 3 or 4 from my DE blades, and 5 or 6 from a SE in my GEM.

2 or 3.

Depends which blade as YMMV

In my NEW I get around 5 from an Astra, 2-3 from a Feather. 3 from a Personna, 2 from a Derby. In a slant, 2 of each.

I sometimes get one more and sometimes one less.

It has always been a grouse with me that no. of shaves (or days of use) doesn't really indicate how much acreage a blade has covered.

For example, are you a one pass a day a shaver? (two, three or four perhaps?)

If you are a 4 pass a day shaver and you find yourself tossing blades every other day, and someone else who is a one pass a day shaver claims the same blade lasts him a week, you are both deriving the same amount of use from that blade.

Hope everyone realizes this when they try to judge the longevity of various brands of blades by asking other people how much use they get out of their blades

Just finished a 5th shave this week with a Treet Classic in a Tech. That's my general rule of thumb, with the 5th shave in a week sometimes a bit of a struggle.

For three weeks before the current week just ending, I managed 15 shaves from two blades: 8 with a Shark in a Tech, and 7 with a Super Iridium in a Schick Krona.

These are mostly three pass with touchup shaves. When I use Old Spice sensitive in the can, it's usualy a two pass shave with touchup.

Sometimes the razor can affect longevity too. I don't think I would have made 7 or 8 shaves with the above blades in a Super Adjustable.

Well, there's a fair acreage on my face.

As to passes, I seem to have settled on three passes and "snagging" (a term used in the UK in construction - means tidying up loose ends and fixing mistakes). The "snagging" probably covers as much ground as a regular pass.

I'd guess my blades take a fair hammering, when all's said and done, so four shaves and the possibility of more, from one blade seems pretty good, to me.

As I said in my OP, I'm not after any record - I'm just a bit surprised to have got four good shaves out of a blade. :001_smile

For me my rule of thumb is generally 5 shaves per blade using Dorcos, RIP, Bic and Crystals. My shaves are usually 2 pass with touch ups.

When I was trying the sample pack I got I used each blade for a week. About 5 days seems like a fine number.

3 max. I throw them out after 2 or 3, whether they need it or not. I don't see any need to risk a bad shave.

(3 passes + 1 touch-up, typically).

My SE blades (Gem/Pellas, PAL) typically give me 4 days.
My injector blades (Pellas or Chinese Schick) 4-5 days.
Feather Super Pro blades cut to fit into an injector: 6-8 days.

I am still working my through a blade sampler pack. I started with Derby 5-pack and got four 3 pass shaves per blade, although I think I was pushng it by the fourth shave. I am now on my third of five Swedish Gillette blades. I did notice that the edges are numbered 1 & 2 on one side and 3 & 4 on the other. I don't know if it makes any difference but I now flip the bade in my razor after two shaves. I also find that I am getting slightly better shaves from the Gillette blades. It could be an overall improvement in my technique though. This DE stuff really requires that a lot of things are done correctly. From prep & lather to angle & pressure. I think I get a DFS 99% of the time. Blades are cheap and so are soaps and creams when you consider how long they actually last. If you wanted to shave just once with a bade, then what would your outlay be compared to the price of cartridges?

Sometimes the best blade is the one that has some experience to it.

Somewhere between two and four. I do have one blade that I can get five shaves out of, but only when it is in a certain razor.

My favorite blades are Derbys and IP red packs. I get 7 comfortable 3-pass shaves from each of them. Once, while visiting my sister and brother-in-law on the East Coast, I used one Derby for the 8 days I was there and had no problems. Feathers are absolutely the worst blades for longevity for me. The first two shaves I think I've died and gone to heaven. The third shave...well, to put it kindly, there is no third shave! Go figure. :001_huh:

I easily get 7+ shaves with a swede, super iridium or kai. Crystals, derbys and indian green gillettes last about 3 shaves while bics make it for 2. I get a good shave from the bics but I wish they lasted longer. It seems you can feel them getting duller with each stroke.
