Chronicles of a Traveling Straight Razor

Well, the journey begins. This will be the thread for all of the participants in the tour to chronicle their experience with the World's Most Traveled Razor. As a couple of you may have noticed on another thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=86124), I came up with an idea to let some of the B&B membership have an opportunity to shave with one of my custom razors rather than just put some nice scales on it and sell it. Before you question why, let's just say that I am hoping to get more out of observing this adventure than I would by just putting some extra money in the bank. I guess you could say I'd be getting paid in a different way if this all works out.

The idea was spawned from knowing that everyone in B&B reader-land cannot necessarily afford to purchase one of my razors or get your hands on one anytime soon. Others of you might be able to afford one, but may want to just see what the fuss is all about. You also get to act famous by scratching your initials in the scales.

While my razors are expensive, they don't necessarily shave better than a good quality vintage razor. However, it doesn't change the fact that there are not a whole lot of my custom razors around and guys being guys, we all have a tendency to like things that are scarce or one of a kind or have a bit of quality to them. My razors fit in there somewhere.

I sent the razor off to the first person on the list and Ben should have it about mid-week (May 10 - 16) Here's hoping for an enjoyable adventure for all of you... :a17:

I'm excited to see what pictures people come up with on this tour. It should make for an interesting journey .

Every one of your razors looks like it could kill a man if he looked at it wrong. I like that .

Incredibly awesome... for those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Bill, he's just about the nicest SOB you'd ever meet.

The time, effort, and money he has into this project is probably quite high and for him to do this to merely help out his fellow forum buddies speaks worlds of Bill's character.

If you're eligible, and you're not jumping on this - you're a plumb fool. Just having the pleasure of seeing/enjoying his incredible work and tireless attention to detail is a treat in and of itself.

Thank you Bill of offering this up, it will be fun to follow this razors journey though the hands of our fellow B&B'ers.

I really hope this is still happening when I finally become experienced enough to use it.

Things such as this really say something about the people we have here on the forum, because not only is it a reflection of Bill, but of everyone else since he is trusting these people with his work to be honest and fair.

This is going to be the first thread I ever subscribe to

Thanks Bill for having this idea to begin with and for then following through and making it a reality. I think all of us are in for some fun as we watch this travel the globe from one B&B home to another. This is history and legend in the making and will draw some of us closer together through a common shared experience.

Now the waiting begins...

For scratching the initials into the scales, I'm repeating part of what I said in post #72 of the original thread. Here it is...

If your vision is going south like mine, use one of those magnifying visors to do the work. Or just hold a 3-inch magnifying glass with one hand and scratch with the other. Otherwise, for you guys with good vision...

Lightly draw your initials in any one of the squares with a sharp pencil. Then use the awl to trace over what you drew with the pencil. Do it in stages, going over your initials over and over again until it looks good to you. I may put my initials in with the same tool to give you something to go by. It won't have to be very deep.

In the meantime, practice with something that has a very sharp point on an old set of scales you have lying around...

I've been following this forum for a while now since seeing some of Mantic's videos on youtube. This is my first actual post. It seems like there are a lot of informative, helpful people on this site who are very interested with the whole art of Wetshaving. I think it's great. I am also very interested by this thread. Very cool idea Bill, you seem like one hell of a nice guy doing this. Quite creative idea too. Hope all goes well. I will stay tuned and see.

Hi, I missed out on this as intriguing ‘Grand tour’ as I've dipped in and out of B&B but not signed up for it until the other week.
Got to say this sounds like truly genius and philanthropic idea! I have no notion as to where your blade is due to go but have you considered giving it a trip across the ‘pond’ to UK? I may well be out of time on the ‘grand tour reservation’ but have a think and let me know.

I'm scared....

I mailed the travel razor the same day as another box of razors. I mailed the travel razor to Los Angeles, which is only 4 hours away, and the other to Georgia, which is 2,000 miles away.

The Georgia box was delivered in two days. The one to Los Angeles is still wandering around in the postal facility somewhere after 4 days.

I know it's kind of last minute.... but is there any chance I can be removed from the list?

The tracking number says it was processed at the downtown LA facility last night at 11:30pm, and again at 1:30am today - I am assuming this is the arrival and departure of the package from that processing facility. :w00t:

I'm heading to my PO to check for it right now

It's my understanding that insured, signature required deliveries are actually handed off and signed off on by each member of the PO chain of delivery so it takes a bit longer. :mad3:

Wouldn't that be hilarious if the razor didn't even make it to the first stop of it's journey? :001_rolle

The answer is no.

Expect an update within the hour!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls... I am pleased to announce that I have just experienced, hands-down, the best shave of my life.

This beauty has a softer touch than an angels kiss, I was mistaken to call her a bad boy before... this Lady is truly a sight to behold, to be held and... be held by

I cannot wait to hear the reactions from the rest of you when she sings her sweet song whilst dancing across your cheek and over your chin.

The kind of song that seems to make your hair jump right off your face onto the razor, she is that gorgeous.

Bill, you are truly a master of your craft. I thank you, my BBS face thanks you, and my unborn children and their unborn children's faces thank you.

Thank you for sharing with all of us this wondrous work of art

The rest of you are in for a real treat when the golden ticket arrives at your mailbox.

ps. Heya Bill, seeing as how it's my birthday this Saturday and all, I'm sure you and the rest of the fella's wouldn't mind if I just... kinda... hold on to her.. for a while... like.. forever... would ya?

pps. We should name her, after her first battle. I was thinkin' maybe Whiskerfel or Whiskerbane... yeah, nice and feminine! Either that or perhaps Serendipity as I feel quite serendipitous at the moment. What do you think Bill?

One successful story down, many more to go... I hope.

I'm sure I may have to repeat this a time or two because it will get buried in the multiple posts that follow, but those of you who will receive the razor, there is one important point I need to cover:

ü Do not use a cutting edge of any kind to cut through the cardboard mailing box as you will also invariably cut into the custom wood box inside because it is such a tight fit. Instead, carefully cut the tape covering the pull strip intended to open the mailing box and also cut the other tape that is, or should be, on the seams.

Thanks...

BillEllis
05-14-2009, 10:10 AM
One more bit of instruction...

You do not have to use the oil that comes in the box. You can also use Ballistol, butcher block oil, or any light oil of your choice. Just go very very easy as it doesn't take much.

One drop on each side of the blade spread evenly. You shouldn't even be able to see the oil after you are done. Use a tissue to make a final wipe, close it up and send it off.

Ben needs a hand for creating the google map for us and for volunteering to maintain it.

I also learned something here. I learned that fellas with mohawks can be polite, helpful, and respectful. I guess I won't be able to generalize behavior from those who have them from now on... I guess that's a good thing, I'm not sure.

OK, so 14 more people, at approx 4 days (use plus travel) per person....means I should get to shave with this amazing razor in 56 days. AMAZING. Bill, it's been said before, but this is a fantastic thing you're doing.

Oh, and people with Mohawks can absolutely be wonderful people. I had one (going back a few years)...but I turned into a lawyer! So, I guess not all of us turn out to be polite, well mannered and helpful!

In this age of instant gratification with digital cameras (I grew up on 35mm film and Kodak mailers) and instant connectivity (CB radios were the height of technology when I was a kid) I feel anticipation is a good thing. Anticipating, waiting, and savorying a moment are good things.

When I signed on for this very cool adventure, I figured I'd be one of hundreds of guys nationwide wanting to participate. I expected I'd see the razor somewhere down the road. Way, way down the road. In Bill's original thread, I guessed I'd be #187 - plenty of time to prepare and hone my skills (pun intended), so they'd be as sharp as, well, The Traveling Razor itself. Gents, I was wrong by 185 places.

Mind you, no complaints here. But, rather than saying, "Oh man, I was going to do that!" I'll be saying, "Oh man, that is so cool, I wish I'd thought of that!"

There were no updates on the USPS website all weekend. In fact, the USPS tracking was offline last night - how funny is that? This morning, the update shows the razor arrived at the local PO at 6:25 a.m. - a full day early? Can I snag it today? Move the whole project a day forward? You guys will know minutes after I do. Okay, I guess instant gratification has a place in this.

Back from the shave. Wow! What a rush! The craftsmanship and talent necessary to build this razor are nothing short of amazing. Looks impressive in photos? Wait till you hold it yourself. I have over 30 years photography experience and I cannot take a picture that does this razor justice. So I threw this together:

http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0703a.jpg

Told my 10 year old, "Mr. Ellis' Traveling Razor is here."

She asked, "Daddy, why don't you build your own Traveling Razor?"

I laughed and said, "That would be great, but Daddy is lacking three things: the talent, skills, and equipment to build a Traveling Razor."

While the experience is fresh in my mind, I would offer this suggestion for future fellows' first shave: don't bother trying to get a good "action shot" unless you have a photographer. Relax and enjoy the experience as it is a rare gift. Thank you, Bill!

Tomorrow The Traveling Razor plays tourist and I play tour guide - after another shave, of course...

As a heads up for those of you on the list. It would be a good idea to send the $15 to the person just ahead of you on the list. I will be sending all of you the paypal address of the person you need to pay. I don't want anyone to mail the razor until they have been paid. Additionally, since time is of the essence, if you have not mailed the money to them in time, you may be skipped over to avoid unnecessary delays. :frown:

Today was Razor Tourist Day. What better place to start, than the "Top of the World"?

http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0734a.jpg

I started with a little thing I call "Ride and Shave". Packed The Razor (very, very carefully) brush, soap, water, and cameras in my hydration pack (it all fit!) then hit the trail. Pedaled to "Top of the World" - so named because it is the highest point on the West Redding Trail System and has awesome views of fun places, such as:

6,200 foot Shasta Bally to the west: the highest rideable mountain in the area with 1 mile elevation gain in just under nine miles.
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0758a.jpg

14,162 foot Mt. Shasta to the north (with Keswick Dam and Keswick Reservoir in the lower left).
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0756a.jpg

and 10,457 foot Mt. Lassen to the east, one of two active volcanoes in the continental United States.
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0757a.jpg

Mode of transportation to "Top of the World" and all the other trails: Gary Fisher Cake 2
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0722a.jpg

Did a pass with The Razor but was running low on water, so I cleaned and dried The Razor, packed, and headed home. For those tracking the mileage: 5.3 miles on the bike. Showered and finished my second awesome shave, then stropped and Tuff-Glided it, and carved my initials in a block on The Razor - and that, gentlemen, was the morning session.

Okay, one more Razor photo from "Top of the World"

http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0750a.jpg

Here in California, we had a Statewide Special Election. Yes, The Razor was there for this historic vote:
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0774a.jpg

This evening, I set out to hit some tourist spots that I could drive to, adding 45 miles to The Razor's total distance traveled. The best photo was this one: The Three Shasta's: Shasta Dam, Shasta Lake, and Mt. Shasta.
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv42/Live_2_Ride/DSCN0770a.jpg

What a blast! Bill, I cannot thank you enough for this awesome opportunity! Having seen and used The Razor, the only regret I have is I will not be able to attend the seminar you and Joel are having on June 6.

There's still time on the clock, and I have a couple more photos to shoot...

I have received several requests to have the razor sent to other countries. My first response is, "How cool is that!" I'd love to see pics of the razor in the foreground of some of the great landmarks around the world. That would be amazing.

However...

Arrival survival and insurance costs would really put a damper on things in most other countries. That's not to mention the value added tax you guys in those countries would have to pay to ship it around.

It could not be sent around without declaring the value of $500 for insurance purposes and have the recipient not expect to pay the tax their country imposes on that amount... whatever it happens to be. So, that would mean each and every one of you would be saddled with shipping/insurance of close to $30 and have to pay the VAT on top of that. I see a disaster in the making with that scenario.

Lying about the value is not an option with me. I could slide with the "gift" thing in the customs declaration, but not about the value. If the declared value was set, for instance, at $25, then that's all I could collect if it got lost or stolen in the process.

If there is something I am missing regarding this situation, please do give me a heads up...

Bill, this isn't just me trying to be funny, but practically speaking, the only way the razor could travel outside the country would be for you to accompany it. I don't know who's paying for that, but there's the answer to the dilemma. The risk associated with shipping that precious little box back and forth around the world is almost incalculable.

Anocer
05-21-2009, 01:35 PM
To all you folks outside the States, I may be slightly, OK, extremely biased... but I would not hesitate for a moment over an increase in the cost of shipping.

However, Gary does make a good point... Bill might be talked into having you international fellas buy him plane tickets all around the world

This is really only an issue the first time the razor moves from one country into the next.

If someone could physically move the razor across the border before shiping it or possibly even handing it off in person, the customs issue would be completly eliminated.

For example, if someone in the US were to drive across the border to Canada and mail it insured to the first Canadian on the list from within Canada, the razor could bounce along within Canada duty free and the issue would only arise when the time came to ship it back to the US (and this could be orchestrated so that the last person is someone who can again physically move the razor across the border before shipping it.

Similarly, someone could take the razor in their luggage to the UK or EC and, subject to what the folks in the EC have to say, my understanding is that the razor can bounce around within the EC duty free. Then someone will have to physically bring it back to the US.

While the logistics may be somewhat complicated, the mechanism for dealing with this is quite straigthforward.

Just a thought.

Wow, I'm thinking I've got my work cut out now, if I'm going to be expected to maintain the pace you gentlemen have set, right out of the box. I'm hoping the Bill Ellis WMTR brings its own special mojo when it gets here, because I'm going to need it. That's a super cool video!

As a photo op, has anyone considered acquiring the services of a few beauties who are about to pamper a seated man in need of a shave? Gals standing around with a couple brushes full of hot lather and standing at the ready with the razor in their hand to give a .......... shave? Some clothing would be required on the forum pics, but the one's you send me... well...

Pics like that in advance may earn somebody an extra day with the razor...

I'm sure that could be arranged.

The ergonomics of this "stogie" razor is completely different than my humpback style, and far different than most vintage razors. I like the versatility of being able to use this style in different holding positions.

For the guys who have used it so far, what are your thoughts on its usability? Did you fall right into a smooth transitional acceptance in its differences, or was it hard for you to adjust to them?

Was it easier or harder for you to use than a vintage style razor? You will not hurt my feelings if you have something critical to say. It will let me know if I need to work on the design some more...

Ok, I know you said 3-5 but once I started looking for the images to my first five I found others I couldn't leave out :)

For background, the pieces from this exhibit were excavated from Roman Villas around the Bay of Naples that were covered when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79BC and utterly wiped over the extensive Roman vacation homes. So the pieces that have been found there are truly exquisite examples of the goods that decorated the hearth and home of the Roman elite.

Top 5:
Skyphos with the Labors of Hercules (http://www.nga.gov/education/classroom/pompeii/img/full/28.jpg) - I love how the Herakles Myth is depicted here in such fantastic detail on a wineglass showing the heartfelt role these stories played in every day life.
Girl fastening her Peplos (http://www.vroma.org/images/mcmanus_images/bronzewoman_papiri1a.jpg) - Immensely captivating, truly brought me to the moment.
Bronze statue of Alexander on Bucephalus (http://www.mymacedonia.net/history/images/alxbuce.jpg) - Very powerful, awe-inspiring, and simply commands reverence.
Young Hercules strangling the Serpents (http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2008/pompeii/images/images/exedra_hercules.jpg) - The face on this piece as well as the body composition is fantastic. Sadly, the photo does neither justice.
Achilles and the relief of Telephos (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1057/566457587_4c9198e5ed.jpg) - This interesting piece speaks to me of the inevitable consequences of any action no matter the size.

Bonus 5:
Augustus (http://www.nga.gov/press/exh/264/assets/thumbnails/264-038.jpg) - The detail on this 1" across piece is mind-boggling, especially given the rarity of onyx, the artisan who crafted this piece must have been a master of masters (like an ancient Ellis).
Plato's Academy (http://ancientrome.ru/art/artwork/mosaic/rom/m0035.jpg) - As a student of philosophy this held a special place in my me.
Thracian Gladiator's Helmet depicting the Battle of Troy (http://www.nga.gov/education/classroom/pompeii/img/full/78.jpg) - I love the Battle of Troy and just like the Skyphos of Hercules' Labors this piece shows the everyday place of Myth and like the Alexander statue relays the reverence of heroes.
Obsidian Skyphos with Egyptian figures (http://www.nga.gov/education/classroom/pompeii/img/full/36.jpg) - This piece shows the adaptive and incorporating nature of Roman art and culture and imparted unto me the sheer magnitude of the Roman Empire
Lava bracelet depicting Diana, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Apollo as the 7 days of the week (http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2008/pompeii/images/gods_bracelet_lrg.jpg) Again, showing the place of Myth in everyday life. This also reminded me of Chimensch's 7-day Set (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=89070) :)

I found the stogie design to be a bit odd at the very first instant I held it but once I had it in my hand for a few seconds it felt very natural. It had a very solid, stable feel to it that made me feel immediately comfortable.

Just a suggestion, but do you guys think it would be helpful if a separate thread was started in the Barber Shop forum or something that we could link to from this one that discusses how to edit a video and how to post it on You Tube? I think a separate thread would be the best so that this one does not get too far off topic. If any of you could do that, it would be appreciated. Just let me know if you do because I really try to avoid the Barber Shop threads... know what I mean? :001_rolle

Some guys, like me for instance, may be in the dark as how to go about something like that and it would add extra interest to the travel razor saga.

Another great shave today!

The Razor and i did a little field trip around my neighborhood, the "Cultural District" in Ptown, and i'll post a couple photo's when i have a few minutes.

Im headed up to Seattle for the evening, and will NOT be taking the Ellis razor with me. while USPS will insure for $500, i'd rather not have that conversation with my car insurance or the hotel staff.

Editing the video is going to be the tricky part IMO - I don't know a lot about this and I think it varies based on what equipment you use, the OS on your computer, etc... I'll let Earl, tell us all about video-editing

However, to upload a video to Youtube, all you need do is click Upload a Video (http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_upload) and login with your Youtube or Google account (You can add a Youtube account to your Google account if you don't have a Youtube account).

If you don't have either you can Create a Youtube Account (http://www.youtube.com/create_account) then click Upload a Video (http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_upload)

If you have any trouble or just don't want to monkey with registering, you can message me and I will provide you with a username and password to log in and upload a video with, and even walk you through it if need be.

Or you can send it to me and I will do it.

I should be able to put together a simple tutorial on getting a video to youtube. Not right away as I am currently without internet at home and am using my phone for web access right now though. There are a few websites that allow you to do basic editing on them that could work for this. You upload your photos or video clips and then can play around on the site to edit. Most will also export directly to youtube for you. Additionally any recent P, mac or windows based, should have some basic software included in it as well. If anyone has questions about processes and settings feel free to hit me up with a PM and I will do my best to assist.

Another option could be for me to set up a storage place when I get access here again and let people upload to me. I could then put together a "trip" piece with footage from as many people as wish to contribute. Maybe even doing a DVD at the end with everyone's stuff added to that and the google map. Ideas abound....

I fell into a smooth transitional acceptance - I think having seen photos of The Razor helps pave the way. All razors have their own character - having 12 in active rotation keeps you learning the nuances of each. Just keep the angle low and don't forget where that point is: the point will not be ignored!

I like the shape/grip. Any grip I wanted to try worked well, so I enjoyed the versatility. Also, it seems larger than most of my razors - because it didn't fit in the razor holder I have. Unfortunately, I didn't put it with my razors for a "group photo"! How could I miss that one?

Absolutely, it was an exquisite experience that I still feel awestruck by... much like the shave w/ the WMTR

Plato's Academy was a rather large piece, I'd guess about 1 square meter at least... it was a floor mosaic. It had a genuinely warm and encouraging feeling to it.

And sadly, the photos do not do the pieces justice whatsoever. Particularly the Augustus medallion. As I mentioned before this piece in particular was simply breath-taking, awe-inducing and inspiring.

The best photo is of the Skyphos of the Labors of Hercules. The Gladiator's Helm has such an incredibly ornate level of detail on every surface you'd need two dozen photos just to capture the basic elements.

Some of the reformed/restored pieces were astonishing... I could see how the piece would have been shattered across a floor, buried in ash, dirt, rock and mud... only to be cataloged and inventoried and one day glued back into place. Quite amazing.

Okay, Bill. Is the World's Most Traveled Razor going to be a gentleman or a lady? An earlier thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=86124) gave it a title, and a name was tossed around. I believe a masterpiece such as this deserves a name. We could start a separate thread with a poll. The only requirement might be that you have to post a picture of the person being voted for or vote for one already posted. You could make the final determination. So far, I'm voting for Elise! Just like your razor, I WANT HER SOOOOOO BAD!!!!

Interesting idea. I thought Elise was perfect because it is very similar to Ellis, and her album title is Insatiable, which is very fitting for a razor getting passed all over the country (maybe world at some point).

Some may think this discussion is off topic. Look at the photos Ben has included: these pieces were made by master craftsmen and artists over 2000 years ago. Looking at them is like looking at Bill's Traveling Razor: mind boggling craftsmenship, beautiful to look at, and prized posessions - just like Bill's Traveling Razor. Ben says the photos don't do the pieces justice - just like Bill's Traveling Razor - each of you will agree when you are holding The Razor.

The major difference? The museum pieces are irreplaceable relics and not for sale - no matter how much money you have. For a two year (or so!) wait and a few hundred dollars, you could actually own a Bill Ellis custom razor. Makes that two year (or so!) wait seem a lot less painful when put like that, doesn't it?

Very true, but Bill is so booked up that we have to go onto a waiting list to get on the waiting list. It is a possibility that we still may not be able to get our hands on one of these. If you get a chance at one, I think you have to get it!

Of course, that's why I said "2 years (or so!)" twice. As The Razor continues it's journey, demand for Bill's razors will increase. The evidence is on the front page of B&B: in the 15 days since this thread was started there have been over 5,300 views - and the razor is in the hands of the third fellow. What will happen as it continues around the US? When logistics are hammered out and an American hands The Razor to a Canadian at Niagra Falls? (Such an awesome image!) This could go on for years, as I suspected in Bill's original thread. Great fun to follow and be part of.

This is amazing. I ended up starting out with a DE and I said to myself why not go all the way. Hence, I asked my Grandfather if he had any heirloom straights lying around. Now I have 4 vintage straights I have been cleaning up over the past couple of months. Haven't actually shaved with a straight yet because none of my razors are shave ready. I am just obsessed with everything to do with straight shaving...

Would Bill Ellis be willing to let me do my first straight shave with the Worlds Most Traveled Straight? Picks will of corse be taken.

This is precisely why I posted these photos. To show the parallel between days of yore and the crafts that so dominantly guided artwork and the modern day where such master artisans are rare.

A few thousand years after the big one hits and LA sinks into the ocean and they excavate the ruins of the once decadent City of Lost Angels I wonder what they will find from my belongings... hopefully an Ellis in my cold dead hands

That might make for an interesting thread... were you to be excavated from the ruins of a disaster a thousand years from now what would you most like to have survived the test of time for future generations to study?

This is precisely why I posted these photos. To show the parallel between days of yore and the crafts that so dominantly guided artwork and the modern day where such master artisans are rare.

A few thousand years after the big one hits and LA sinks into the ocean and they excavate the ruins of the once decadent City of Lost Angels I wonder what they will find from my belongings... hopefully an Ellis in my cold dead hands

That might make for an interesting thread... were you to be excavated from the ruins of a disaster a thousand years from now what would you most like to have survived the test of time for future generations to study?I can see the discovery of what's left of you now as it hits the front pages of the Cybernet Gazette... "Perfectly preserved Mowhawk friggin Indian found with a goofy looking cigar-shaped tribal knife in his hand." :001_rolle

You know I jest, right Ben?

But to be honest, I'd expect it to be more like "Perfectly preserved cigar-shaped tribal knife found in hand of friggin goofy lookin Mohawk Indian" :punk:

we went to the Art Museum, and the old Paramount turned "Portland" sign is the Arlene Shnitzer concert hall, which the photo was taken right near the court house.

Bill stated in the beginning somewhere when this whole thing started, that he was not concerned with what his razor does to anyones face, just concerned with what peoples stropping does to his razor.

As someone that has not shaved(ergo not stropped) with a straight, I believe you would be out of luck.

However, who knows how long this thing is going to be going around, you may become an expert in time to get on the list.

Edit: Bill has a lot of time and money, and heart invested in this, so don't take the apathy towards facial damage personally.

While we're at it, I think it might be a nice treat for ya'll to post the mileage this razor has traveled while in your position / en route to the next fella that way I can keep track of it on the map

Try to get the # of miles from where your official photo was taken so we can be as accurate as possible

It was 275 miles to the Hollywood sign for me, then another 25 back to the post office and whatnot. From the PO to Redding was another 550 miles... we are up to 850 just on the first leg!

a possibility would be to do a short stay between others and have it stropped before and after you. as a thought. I doubt there would be a lack of people willing to prep the blade and/or reset it for such a chance. provided video could be procured of course

Inevitably, I knew it might happen, but, I was just kinda hoping to avoid any flies in the ointment. Please just take that as an expression and not an insult, fatpanda. However nice you may be, I think you either missed all the references to my idea of a successful journey for this razor, or you are purposely brushing them aside.

I indicated that I wanted only experienced users to ask to be put on the list for two main reasons.

There would be less chance of injuries
There would be less chance of damage to the cutting edge
I also indicated that I wanted it to go to guys who are contributing to the B&B site. With only a single post to your credit, I'm not quite sure how this journey could involve you right now.

I also think that using my razor for your first shave is not a good idea. First, I believe that you would not be able to appreciate the entire concept behind this journey. Secondarily, I fear that you may cut the crap out of yourself.

Even with all my disclaimers that each person must agree to before they receive the razor, my willingness to send it to you would be nothing short of deliberate indifference in the eyes of the law. I would have no argument in court should the judge look me in the eye and say, "Mr. Ellis. What were you possibly thinking when you agreed to send a potentially lethal tool to someone who has no idea whatsoever how to handle it?" What do I say in response? - "Duh, I was just tryin' to be a nice guy." Naw.

Sorry. Maybe down the road a piece. We'll see how you do here first. Gotta earn your wings, so to speak...

I'm really inclined not to allow anyone who has joined B&B after this journey started to get on the list for at least 6 months so I can get a feel of who they are. Contrary to popular belief, I don't like everybody.

Here in Redding, The Razor got a 5.3 mile bike ride, a 45 mile drive to the various sights, followed by the 2 mile drive to the post office. So, 52 miles in Redding. All of which I can document with photos and video.

Good job on your photos, Josh. Hope you enjoyed your Razor Holiday.

Two favors if I may, guys...

First is if you could just vote for the rating of this thread. You know, the ones up there at the header of the thread. If you hover over the stars right now you will see only a single teensy vote... :frown: The good part is that I unashamedly voted 5 stars.

Second, if you could just post a short supportive comment on the google map page, it would be appreciated. It's the little things that contribute to a person's desire to help pull the wagon. Let Ben know he dun did good. :badger:

Please don't look at this request as anything other than a heads-up and not take it as an admonition or scolding.

Interesting idea. I thought Elise was perfect because it is very similar to Ellis, and her album title is Insatiable, which is very fitting for a razor getting passed all over the country (maybe world at some point).

Paul, if I had a vote, based on your logic, I'd cast it for "Elise".

The razor definitely felt versatile, especially with the S --> N passes up the neck. Bill, your comment about this razor being different than the Vintage blades really struck a cord with me too. Although "Elise Estrada" is heavy, there is a very light touch against the face almost like the steal is a heavy duty aluminum. i think this attributes to it's smoothness.

As far as usability, this razor is awesome! I tried a handful of different ways of shaving with "Elise" and some of the new (to me) holds were more comfortable than a standard (ie. 3 fingers on spine, pinky in tang VS. 2 & 2).
I don't think it was more or less difficult than a vintage straight, but there was no doubt a difference. The scales are larger, and i had to work my fingers around them to fit naturally. which isn't a negative, as i really liked the weight, just different than my vintage straights.
also, stropping was a little different as well with the two notches. again, not a negative in any way, but i was careful to make sure i was stropping focused.

Bill, what did you use to hone the razor? if it's alright to ask... what did you use to set the bevel and finish it with?

I'm glad the ergonomics is working, or seems to be, for you guys. I found it easily adaptable, but sometimes I can find a butter knife from the kitchen drawer to be an extension of my hands rather than be an obstacle for them. So, I was curious to see what some of you guys think.

Honing:

Ok, remember now, I am taking a completely flat surface that won't cut a hard stick of butter and turning into something that will scrape the whiskers of your face with some degree of comfort. I say this only so that everyone knows it would not take this amount of work to get it back in shape if someone rolled the edge. But I know you guys won't do that...

I start out with one of my 2 5/8 inch wide by 12 inch long glass plates that I had a glass shop cut for me. ( I use 3 of them ) This size enables me to cut three lengthwise pieces of sandpaper from a regular 8 x 11 sheet in whatever grit I choose.

First, I get the edge semi-close for a bevel on my grinding machine. Then I go to wet/dry paper in 240 grit with a bit of kerosene as a lubricant. Water works too, but if I'm honing carbon steel, I often use kerosene. I adhere the sandpaper to the glass plate with a spray adhesive. I keep a single layer of electrical tape on the spine to protect it and check it often for wear. I will replace it whenever necessary as it starts to wear through. I take both bevels down to form an edge that has not a single flat spot showing. I check the entire length of the cutting edge with a 30X jeweler's loupe to insure that it is uniform.

Once the bevel is correct and even on both sides, I change the grit of the sandpaper to 400 while still using one layer of electrical tape protecting the spine. I use the 400 until the grit pattern of the paper is the same/uniform for the entire length of the cutting edge. Then I switch to 600 grit and do the same thing. 600 grit will start to show a nice shiny bevel. If I stick with sandpaper ( it depends on my mood at the time ) then I progress to 1,000 and then on to 1,500 before hitting my Belgian yellow with diamond spray on the surface.

If I abandon the sandpaper at the 400 grit level, then I jump to my DMT hones if the steel is particularly hard. (stainless razors) These are diamond impregnated flat metal hones for those of you unfamiliar with the term. I still have the one layer of tape on the spine. I change electrical tape probably 3 times throughout the entire process. Once the bevels are uniform and true, I switch to whatever group of stones I am favoring at the time. In a lot of cases, it's a Norton 4K/8K and then on to a 12,000 grit Shapton ceramic dust hone.

After I am done with the Shapton, I put two stretched layers of electrical tape on the spine which will create a double bevel. A very slight double bevel, but double bevel nevertheless. It is at this point that no more stones are used.

Then I make 8 - 10 passes on a 1 micron piece of lapping film that is adhered to another glass plate the same size as the others. After the 1 micron lapping film, I switch to half a micron lapping film, also on glass for about 6 passes. I use water for lubricant for these. At this stage I go to the strops with the tape removed as it is no longer necessary. I make sure that all water has been removed from the blade before stropping.

I start out with one strop that has green paste (.5 micron) for 15 trips and then I move to another strop, a TM that has .5 micron diamond spray in the surface and make about 30 rounds on that. I move to my Hand American strop with just leather conditioner embedded in the surface. I run about 15 trips on that. I finish with 30 trips on a very nice vintage horse hide with good flex to it. If it doesn't work to my satisfaction, I will usually just go back to the green paste as it's mostly not necessary to go all the way back to the lapping films. Feel free to pad my paypal account for all the secret honing/stropping techniques you have just witnessed. See, if y'all were coming to the clinic in a couple weeks I could learn ya raight in front of yer ownliest eyes.

Had my last shave with her this morning and am standing in line at the PO to ship her off to Leighton.

We tried to organize a shoot, but it was just too short notice to make it happen. I went riding to get photos yesterday. Unfortunately it turned out to be one of the 80 or so days a year with dark skies and rained everywhere I went. Insttead I hit the important places this morning.

The shave? Well it is as close to a perfect razor as I have held. The weight and handling characteristics are superb and she feels almost too natural in hand. My only issue is the width. I have some tighter angles that she was hard to get into without a perfect approach. A little smaller would have cut down an extra pass for me.

Now I just have one question; how do we get on the list to be on the list for being on the list?

Photos are on my camera while I am on my phone. Sadly the SD card will not fit in my micro slot. Need to go home and transfer them before I can upload. It will be hours before that though as I am about to leave bar #1 for #2, then the roller derby bout followed by the after party. I miht get home before 4am.
I do have my last pass recorded with my phone and waiting for it to upload. No editing and poor white balance, but you can see my busted wrist (no dorsal flextion after some bike crashes) and poor technique.

Sorry for the lack of shirt. At least you can all be proud of the fact you are far more muscled than my very lean 6'3" 145lbs. frame.

I was afraid to make the travel razor too fancy... everyone would have been too concerned about looks before anything else.

Arrived just 10 minutes ago. Unlike some of you slackers, I have wasted no time.

Ok, fine. I'm on summer break and don't start my internship until next week so not like I have a lot to do this week. LOL.

Well, I was going to be lazy and just post a link to the photobucket page, but I decided I won't. Shave results later tonight. Yes, I'm a night shaver. Takes too much time in the morning. LOL.

Oh, right. And thats my new pen on the box. Figured I'd take care of two birds with one shot. Its made from Koa and Black Marble and is a fountain if anyone's interested. And thats a pic from my balcony.

I only see Bill's "BE" in the large box with the pivot pin. I was thinking the same thing. Of course, I'd be the guy who forgets to put my initials on it. And don't count me out yet, I'm likely to do just that when it gets to be my turn.

Sure will! Makes writing a pleasure rather than a chore, just like wet shaving.

The initials are there, they just aren't colored. I'll take pics of people's initials after I write mine in. Which will be after I reread the instructions and find something to practice on...

The initials are all linear (L-R same line) from your first marks. Nice for the history aspect and probably the only reason I did not go random in my location choice.

We have. It just turns out that our location choices have been linear so far. On the same side as your initials, from the opposite upper corner and 4 deep on that line now.

Aside: if you ever want to come to Reno let me know. Before or after barber school. After I will give you the full treatment and treat you to the best/worst strip clubs (brother is in that industry as a bartender) and bars in town.

First shave down. Shaved very smooth, just like the other one, but different. Certainly has its own character, the faux jimps were interesting. Gave the razor a different feel than real jimps. Balance and everything else was perfect of course. Still shaving sharp after all her travels too! Another perfect BBS for the travelling straight!

Plus, she's been around Phoenix today. I had a lot of fun showing her some of the sights. Went to Chaparral park in the afternoon, was a little hot, but not too bad. Unfortunately, it appears the geese flew north for the winter. I think I saw a few on the south end of the lake as I drove off, maybe I'll go back and see if I can get some pics of them tomorrow; probably not though.

Then she saw the botanical garden and one of the awesome sunsets here. Honestly I probably never would have visited the garden if not for the travel razor, but I'm very glad I did. Apparently we got to see the Chihuly exhibit because the staff didn't get around to taking it down today!

Anyway, too many pics, your going to have to go visit the album. But I made them bigger for you guys!

Chihuly is incredible. I have had the pleasure to shoot him installing. One of the best artists living and a very personable man on top of that.

City dig as my best friend went to school at DeVry there and I visited a few times: of course you had to take her all around town to find a good time. In Reno I had to go 6 blocks at most. (More done for personal errands) and that included setting up the arena for a roller derby bout and hanging out with a brace of strippers (brother's birthday, camera batteries died. Honest I even tried the ones in my breathalyzer)

:( Was too tired after work and didn't have enough sunlight to check out the allegedly new park in Central Phoenix. However, when I drove by Central while at work, there was a huge hole in the ground about where the park is supposed to be.

Initials are in and I added some pics of the two sister razors for those interested. Plus some close ups of the initials. I decided to take the path less travelled and stuck mine right in the middle on the other side. :)

It sure has been quiet around here for the past few days --- am I correct in thinking "Elise" is either on her way to Sullybob's neck of the woods, or already there, and being treated to a scenic tour and photo shoot? Yes, there is a reason for my curiosity. If she's at Sullybob's now, then she's only got 2 more stops after that, before she'll arrive in my mailbox. Am I excited? Oh, yes! Come on, little razor!

Not the best images or many locations, but here is what turned out decent.

The Mapes was demolished on (from memory) Super Bowl Sunday 2000. I was actually videotaping it from the roof of the the off-yellow building in the photo of the derby set-up. A beautiful building with a lot of history, but it was in horrible shape and not salvageable at all. Doing a pre-demo shoot of it I almost fell through the floor. The Riverside, which is right next to the courthouse was where people would live for the requisite 4 weeks to gain state citizenship in order to get their quick divorce. Tradition was to follow that by throwing the ring into the river off the bridge right there.

Hey guys - great story for a great blade from a great guy.

In Europe we dont get the chance to get on the forums at the same time of day so its a bit difficult to join in and ultimately get on one of the many lists to be considered for inclusion on the list ( LoL )

Keep it up -

I am considering starting a "Book" on this thing, kind of 6/1 the blade gets stolen in the post, 12/1 some dipstick drops it and causes a chip, 4/1 it has to go back to Billy for re-hone.
7/1 an interested post man robs it ( Stolen )

10/1 a member keeps it and dissappears.

and so on like that, evens 1/1 that it gets around the world loved like a living thing.

Only kidding -

I love this whole thing.

Ladies and Gentlemen, finally here is, the "completed" video of "The Traveling Razor: Ride and Shave".

Three weeks in the making at a cost of several dollars with 3 separate shoots for the downhill run: it's the tightest 3 hours on YouTube. Lots of technical hurdles to overcome, sadly the pain of the last one I pass on to you with instructions on how to watch this and a plea to Earl or anyone else to help me overcome the audio problem.

Please click on the first link below - that's the audio portion. Move that window to the side a bit and wait until the timer on the video, "Runnin' Down A Dream" by Tom Petty, gets to 10 seconds, then click on the YouTube window. Sorry, it's the only way I could get the audio to work without getting it disabled due to copyright issues.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eW91-5TC78

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgpbcRIF5BE What's the "Don't try this" part? Never use the camcorder's display as a shaving mirror. You'll see.

Thanks, Bill! Actually, the guy in the video is my riding buddy, Rob. I ended up shooting the downhill 3x: First just me shooting and all you see is trail - boring! Second was me with the helmet cam shooting Rob - that's what made the final cut. The third shot was Rob chasing me -very shaky because when you strap a video camera to your helmet it adds about 3", so you have to watch out for the clearance. Rob goes 6'3" and I'm 5'10" - so if Rob's clearing the trail, I know I can. The reverse is not true and Rob was seriously concerned about smashing my new camera on a low branch then having to explain to my darling wife, who gave it to me as a birthday present this year how he destroyed a $400 camcorder.

Glad you like the video!

One shave down, two to go and then its off to its next temporary home.

A couple of observations:
It is a really smooth shaver. That ones really a no-brainer, I think we all knew that it was going to be a superlative shaver.

This razor feels like a tool. I mean that in a good way. Everything about it feels solid. Some razors feel like you could snap the blade in half with out too much effort. Not this razor. It feels like a tool that has been designed to last for generations. The scales are very stout.

The box is really nice as well. The pictures don't really do the box any justice.

I have only shaved with round pointed razors before. The tip took some getting used to.

Tomorrow its off to see the sights.

Thank you Bill, for this opportunity.
