The EJ/C&E Best Badger Brush in medium. Own it, or at least tried it. IMHO, it's a benchmark brush.

Of course not, that's far too low a number.
The must-have brush for starting out is the C&E BBB.
Then, I'd say you "must have" a Rooney (heitage if you can) and a Shavemac silvertip ... you'll get "firm" and "soft" displayed in excellent form ... you are now at the crossroads ... you'll know which way you want to go from there.

I should think so! We don't need to give newbies such low expectations!

All of them. I certainly think a good boar brush is a must have. Badger brushes are so personal you can't have just one.
Are you saying that every wetshaver "must have" SIX brushes!
No of course he isn't!
Six is just the starting point.
For me, thought it's my Rooney 1/1/ in finest. (Wonder if I should go home now just to touch up)

Ok,
I understant, I do not want to buy my first brush and give me your opinion which is the best, I want to know is in a collection which is that everyone must have, obvious in the opinion of each one of you, already you have some favorites and work best with soap and some other with cream, exfoliate and give a better shave more luxurious, but I think any model would be a must have in a collection. FOR YOU, WHICH IS?

These are the brushes that I would not be without. Given that the Simpsons are pre-V, and that you just can't buy the two B&B brushes anymore either, I guess if I were building a new collection I'd start with the Beehive.

Naah, that is a list of brushes that I especially like, you would only have to pick one. Or two.
If I could only pick one, it would be a Rooney stubby 1 or 2.

I agree with Ray I have some inexpensive brushes that perform better than my more expensive brushes. The one that works best for you is the way to go, start out with the inexpensive and work your way up you will find whats best for you and your technique in shaving. I dont worry about the name as much as I do the performance I get from the brush.

I'd say the B&B Essential. To me, it's an incremental step up from the C&E. You only need to be a contributor to buy one (while they last!). It's a well-made, perfectly proportioned brush that does everything well.
Besides, what's wrong with a little self-promotion?

I got a C&E BBB back in October. Just had to see what all the fuss was about.
The size, density, softness, and especially price and availability make it the perfect place to start. For many people, it may be the only brush they will ever need.
For me, I moved up to the B&B Essential two months later, but I still break out the BBB from time to time just to compare.
As you say, it serves well as a benchmark, and one of these should be in everyone's shave den.

A short-loft Shavemac in Finest or D01 hair (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=89373), whichever one makes more financial sense for you. They're both amazing.

I agree completely.
Since we're being pushed to pick just one, I'll dodge and instead give a buying scheme:
First: The C&E is getting harder to find, but the Edwin Jagger BBB is the same brush, for about the same price. Good. Inexpensive. As noted, it's a benchmark. Start here.
[Quick aside: If the B&B Essential is available to you, as a contributor, that could be an option instead of the C&E/EJ BBB. All reports suggest it's a great brush. I've got one on the way!]
Second: If you're OK with the generic handles, the Shavemac 177 and some other models are on sale right now from places like West Coast Shaving and Vintage Blades (though I couldn't find most silvertip options on the Vintage Blades website yesterday, so they might be sold out?). At the sale price, I'd probably go that route first, purely because the savings are compelling on a great brush.
Third: Rooney, specifically a 3/1. If you can't get the Shavemac savings for whatever reason, I'd swap my suggestions and get the Rooney second.
[Disclaimer: I bought my Rooney 3/1 before my Shavemac 177; but, the Shavemacs were $115 + shipping then.]
