A generally pleasant Feather AC shave really. Still not super smooth, but I feel like I'm getting there at last. Looks like switching back to creams for now was the best way for me to go to get my confidence up. Gotta love the Taylor's Avocado cream :001_tt1:

I feel that I am still young to this whole new world of shaving...
Hibiscrub to face in shower (this is a surgical scrub used by surgeons before surgery)
Crabtree and Evelyn badger hair travel shaving brush made by Edwin Jagger (left to soak whilst in shower)
Proraso shaving soap in tub
Merkur Vision 2000 (set to about the mid point -- my big mistake, Ouch!)
Derby Extra DE Blade (fresh out the wrapper this am)
Plenty of hot water (73C on the boiler)
Clean face cloth
Three passes, plenty of little bleeders opened up
Alum block (OUCH OUCH OUCH)
Syptic pencil needed for one bleeder
GFT Limes skin food about 30 minutes later
Face burning at the moment.
BBS though!
Lessons to be learned: if cutting corners do not aim for a BBS shave.

Should I divorce my Vision?
No, I think it is a great looking modern DE razor. It lacks the classic style of the HD I admit.
BUT many folk are wed to the Gillette vision of 5.1 blades on their razor. They would look at an old Gillette or Merkur with shock. However, they may see beauty in a Futur or Vision.

Yup, I think I’ll buy a Maestro straight, a Plisson horn/white and I’ll let them keep my Vision company on the Dovo stand. However, I’ll shave exclusively with my Feather AC, my classic and my B&B brush. I can see the aesthetic merit of that.

A very surprising shave tonight. In all my experience with Feathers, they give me an extremely close shave, but rip me up. Tonight, a small nick and virtually no irritation, but not very close either. It felt like I was shaving with an IP, I even checked the blade after the shave, just to make sure I really had a Feather in there. Very strange. Very strange, indeed. Anyone else ever have an experience like this?

Eternal vigilance is not only the price of freedom, but apparently the price of a good shave, as well.
I've noticed some variation in the quality of Feather blades, and had some real dogs. Today was the third go around with a Feather that had given me two very nice shaves. Yet, the next thing you know.........
SOO-WEE!!!
Okay, maybe I wasn't squealing like Ned Beatty in Deliverance, but I was bleeding like a stuck pig. I needed Clint Eastwood's cut man from Million Dollar Baby, Frank Dunn, to stop the bleeding.
Definately wasn't the Feather. Definately was me.

Hey Bob,
I'd say they're Great! Pretty high quality, you can't go wrong with these. Nice fragrances too.
The soap lathers very thick, like a cream...and has talc in it so it helps with irritation.

Lush Razorantium shave

Lush Cosmetic Lad cream as post shave balm
The Lush Razorantium was a new acquisition...I have to say, the first outing was, umm, interesting. The idea seems decent enough, I got it for those days when I'm short on time. And I'm not for a second knocking the quality of Lush's products as a whole. But what a wierd experience. So slippery on my hands that I dropped the slant several times in the sink. So resillient, that it took an age to get off my hands and face (AND razor, so glad I didn't use the Feather AC). And yet, the shave was not fantastic. I wanted 3 passes, I stopped after 2 for fear of really roughing up my face :confused1 I'll give it another try before too long and see if I was just having a bad day.
The Lush Cosmetic Lad lived up to expectations a lot better. My face feels very nice and soft, but I smell like a donut factory (at least that's the vibe I'm getting, YMMV) EDT would be wasted today trying to cover that smell up. It's not unpleasant, but I don't think it would layer well with anything else I used.

SR3122 Silvertip
Institute Karite shea butter soap
Alum
Musgo Real A/S
QED ASC
Arden Sandalwood EDT
I did N-S and S-N passes with the straight and a bit of touch up - not perfect and I went over a couple of the trouble spotes with an injector - but not too bad for the first time I've properly shaved with a straight - no nicks or cuts (although I'm chalking that up to beginner's luck!).
I'm hoping to get good at this straight thing and make it my primary means of shaving.
Thanks to everyone for the advice - espeically about buying a shave-ready razor.

Thanks
I chalk this up to the fact that the razor was very well sharpened by someone other than I.
The chin is a PIA and is where I had to do the clean up - I have especially thick whiskers on the side of the chin and this is where I'm going to have to do the most work to get it right - I am pleased that I managed to take most of the stubble off with the straight.
I'm also going to stick with the 5/8 for a bit before I move up (I have some 6/8 and a 7/8 waiting in the wings, but will take it one step at a time - I actually think the bigger blades will be better at getting throught the whiskers, but I don't want to chop off my ear while I'm fiddling with my technique.

Second day with the straight - this one wasn't as sharp as the one I used yesterday and pulled a bit around the chin on the S-N pass. No nicks (but I narrowly avoided slicing my ear with the spike!) and removed most stubble with the straight, but still needed some quick touch-up with the injector.
I'm finding the neck and chin to be the toughest areas.
In terms of time, the straight has only added 5 - 10 minutes to my morning routine (some of which is stropping).

Woke up late yesterday morning, no time for a shave so thought I'd use the opportunity and shave in the evening. What a great shave I had...
*in the shower to prep
Proraso shaving soap
Crabtree and Evelyn Travel Brush
*the shave
Taylors oil (first pass only)
Taylors Rose cream
Kent BK4 brush
Merkur VISION2000
Derby Extra (fresh out the packet)
Three passes (N-S, Ear-Nose, Nose-Ear)
*to finish
Cold water splash and alum
Harris After Shave Milk
Three minor bleeders in total (one unavoidable over a spot) all solved with the cold water and alum.
Really smooth, and SWMBO comments again on how great my skin looks these days.
The Rose cream smells very intense, gives my skin a slight tingle (almost an itch) though. It lathers up a dream.

If you keep having that itch with the rosecream it might be your allergic to that particular cream not perse the rose personally I wouldnt continue it if it keeps itching me.
Go easy with those Feathers now ! ID say watch your pressure with the razor very carefully specially over difficult spot it will take the whole spot off if your not carefull.

Talking as an anaesthetist here, I doubt the tingle/itch is evidence of an allergic reaction.

Not a particularly satisfying shave today.
The AOS sample cream was excellent, but, with a new blade in the Feather AC, it just felt as rough as old boots. I don't think it was a duff blade, I seem to remember the last one being the same, although that was with week's less practise behind me. Clearly, in the week I'd been using the blade, it had dulled down and smoothed out - it was a real shock going back to a fresh one. Every time there was the slightest resistance, I was questioning whether it was beard or skin...
I will try the trick of running it over a cork a couple of times to smooth it out before my next shave.

Brush- lathered up in a bowl- lather volume comprable to some of the better creams/soaps out there - but superlather like in consistancy and texture.

I still doubt it was any serious reaction to the stuff - I've used it twice now with no irritation other than the tingle described before. No redness, no swelling. I don't even get the tingle to their lavender cream, so it is probably something specific to do with the rose oil/scent.
Received your feather blades today, with a few freebies thrown in too. THANKS Rene.

Decided to shave at work this morning rather then waste an hour doing nothing and then doing the morning thing at home. Unfortunately the hot water is probably only about 40C, I think this is a gesture towards 'health and safety'. So the shower was comfortable but not hot, and the hot water at the sink was good to wash your hands in but not quite hot enough for a really good shave. I also only packed a light shave kit so this was a real experiment that could have gone really wrong.
Shower pre-shave but no face wash/conditioner/etc.
Truefitt & Hill Trafalger shaving cream
Crabtree & Evelyn travel pure badger shaving brush manufactured by Edwin Jagger
Merkur Vision 2000 plus Derby Extra blade (as usual new blade and razor opened ever so slightly)
D. R. Harris After Shave Milk (this smells so similar to Johnson's baby moisturiser that I used to use post-shave)
This wasn't as fully satisfying experience, but no cuts and my face is comfortable and smooth. Tonight I'll pack some GFT Limes cream and Skin Food instead of the T&H cream and DRH milk.
The last few shaves with the Derbys have all been a little rough, end of the box, so we'll see if the next box produces some more comfortable results.
Rene, thanks for the feathers. I'll try them when I'm off the nights.
