i found a way to modify a 1912 auto strop razor to JUST be a blade stropper, akin to the ER stropper. if theres enough of an interest, ill do a video. it works VERY well.

So this would strop SE blades with a spine??

If so, would like to see what yer up to! Certainly can't hurt to make a vid - you are getting quite an impressive collection already!

I do have a spare 1912, so this could be very interesting.

I am hoping it involves two sets of large vise grips, a 20lb ball-peen hammer, arc welder, 12" bench grinder and a paper clip!! That would be way cool!

I just wanted to whine a tad - mostly to those who use a Valet. I recently picked up a valet strop in real nice shape - a Model C kit strop. It was a little dry and retained the folding marks in it but I used a little mink oil and pressed it and hung it with weights, and oiled, and pressed it, and loved it up in general for about two weeks. It was ready!

Then, I tested it in my workshop with a 1912 that had a dull original Valet blade - worked great!! Then, it was time to 'use' it. I had two shaves with one of the spineless Feathers - dern good shaves. But, couldn't resist a strop!

Loaded the razor (adjustable B type) with the strop and pushed forward - nice! Pulled it back - cool! Pushed it forward and --0- *&&&$&*)_23%*& damn near cut the last third right off!!! Son of a B*t^h!! The blade is so frickin sharp it just barely touched the strop and carved right in. A lovely slice across the whole thing at least 1/3 deep. Just waiting to break off. :mad3:

Now I am as 'strop shy' as an 8 yr old who just shot off his first magnum 12 guage. Will I ever be able to strop a Feather again?? Sighhh......

:mad2:

yes, ive cut a strop before myself. not cool.

depending on where it is, you may still be able to use it.

Well, thankfully it was in the bottom 3rd rather than the top. So I will just have to use a short one. (I have been doing that all my life so far and it has worked...)

I think what bugs me most is that I figure this strop to be just shy of 90 years old. It has survived at least one world war, a major pandemic, Vietnam, 911, and I get it for my first official stropping and wham! OH well.

Looking forward to the Vid DAve - I need to see some proper stropping technique!!

Me too!

+100 Dave, I've become a dyed in the wool Gemocrat and I can't remember the last time my one and only DE touched my face. My success with Gems is due in large part to your mentoring. You, my friend are the SE God! Make the video and I'm there!
