I got tired of finding nothing at thrift shops and finding overpriced crap at antique stores, so I ran a small ad in a newspaper. I got one response. A guy who said he had four to five hundred razors. Well, he actually had about 40 DE razors, maybe 24 SE razors, a bunch of injector razors and a ton of assorted stuff from Rolls and Allegro razors to straight razors to sharpeners to electrics. Even two very early-looking electrics that look like regular DE's with electric cords. This stuff has been sitting in cardboard boxes for years and some of it was in pretty rough shape, but I thought I could clean a lot of it up so I bought the whole shooting match for $300. Almost none of the DE's are going to be in excellent condition when they're cleaned up, but most will be good to very good. I know what I'll be doing for the next few weekends. Cleaning and scrubbing and polishing and asking for help in valuing all this stuff. Anyway, here are the DE and SE and injectables on one table and most of the other stuff on the other. You can't really see the half dozen straight razors or the three Rolls and two Allegros.
Rick, that is a fantastic score!

Great score!
Luc, I notice in your sig area that you have a replated NEW with a Bull Mastiff handle from cooncatbob at Bob's Razor Works. Would it be possible to post a photo of that beautiful work of art? If you've already posted it before, please send me a link. I've got a NEW with the standard handle that was plated by Bob, and it shaves like a dream. It's at least equal to, if not better than, the EJ/Muele and Merkur heads. Thanks.
I certainly apologize to Rick Sparks for seeming to hijack his thread! Rick you scored BIG TIME! Congratulations! I think I'll run an ad myself to see what comes of it. That was brillliant. Best regards,

Rick, I can tell you from bitter experience that the Stroppers don't sell on ebay. What a bummer. I've got a nice one I paid $6 for, that I've given up trying to find a new home for, at any price. Who would have known that nobody strops double edge blades anymore?

Those stroppers were made for those old style blades which were thicker. Modern blades are so inexpensive, there is really no need to try and prolong their life.

You know, I tried to pick and choose, but this fella, at 73, is a harder bargainer than I am. It was take the whole lot or take nothing. I know I've got a lot to learn about bargaining, but I'm sure I'll get some profit out of the DE and SE razors and I'll get some experience in the restoration end. The electrics might be of some interest to somebody. Especially the two very early types. We shall see. And I'm obviously going to learn if anybody collects these old hand clippers. I remember having my hair cut by my father using these things. Pretty awful. Course, I don't think he ever got them sharpened so they pulled and tore the hair as much as they cut it.
What a good buy!
Any idea why he had so many razors sitting in cardboard boxes?

I spy an old spice shaving mug, that's definitely ebay-able! Although if it goes up on the B/S/T, I call preemptive dibs!

I have a little less than two weeks to go before I can use the B/S/T, but as soon as I can I'll start putting some of this stuff in there.
The shaving fork doesn't really work all that well. You have to dig out the whiskers one at a time.

the ad you placed was very efficient. well done. with so many razors you'll need an ultrasonic bathtub!

+1
I would also be curious to learn about the background of where the razors are coming from, if you have it...

Posting an ad was a great, very creative idea, Rick. You should post an "after" picture after you get these cleaned up. I'll bet you'll be surprised at how great some of these look with a little cleaning and polish, even some that you may not have given much attention to yet.

Mr. Sparks,
A newspaper add is a great idea. I posted one a few months ago and was able to pull a Toggle and an HD Rocket. The down side is that people tend to put sentimental value on razors. I received many calls from people who had their father's or grandfather's razor. I think they were just curious and wanted to know a value. Most seemed dissapointed that I wouldn't pay $50 for their father's SS or Tech.
I may try again soon, though.

Good post, DL. Sounds like you have to be very careful how you describe what you are seeking when you send a very public inquiry like that.
