Wondering how many blades some of you hoarders  have on hand. Brand not important.

I have around 1500 on hand, but just sold 300. More coming. I can't stop. Somebody help me.

I have a bit less of 500...

100 are Astra Superior
45 are feathers

The rest are a mix of blades: Astra Czech, Astra Kreramik, Elios, Zorryk, Shogun, Kai, Chroma, Gillette Yellow 7.oclock, Gillette Green 7 oclock (India/Russia), Treet... Can't remember the rest but it must add up to a bit less than 500...

At the moment I have around 450 Lord Super Stainless, close to a hundred Souplex blades, some (ca.70) Astra Superiors, 50 Hema blades and all in all another 200 blades of different brands ( Elios, Merkur, Lord Platinums, WSC and a dozen more)
Planning on another 500 or 1000 Lord Super Stainless when my vendor stocks them again...

Gentlemen,

Here's my play from the theatre of the absurd — or what am I going to do with all these razor blades?

The last time I counted my stash of blades, I had following number:

200 Feather
100 Gillette 7 O'Clock yellow, 100 7 O'Clock green
100 Derby
100 Personna Red Pack
200 Dorco 300
80 Dorco 301
25 Treet
50 Merkur
and an assortment of Crystals, Iridiums, Wilkinsons (UK), and . . . well, let's not make the sauce thicker than it already is.

Why so many blades for me and my fellow razor blade ozone commandos? I can find two main answers, really: a sense of adventure in trying new blades, and the reality of grabbing a good deal when you see it.

Now, if you gentlemen will excuse me, I must return to my counting.

Considering that a manufacturer can stop producing your favorite blade at any time.........

It is very easy to hoard/stockpile/prepare for the shavepocalypse in the area of blades as they are fairly cheap but provide instantaneous feedback w/ minimal changes to the routine.

Let's see, I have Sharp,Dorcos,Israeli IPs,Feathers,Wilkie UK,BIC,Astras,Swedes,Derbys,Red-Pack Personnas, and Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdges-and i still don't think it's enough!!!!

Feather and Astra-SP are the backbone of my rotation. Without counting, I'm about the same as you ... plus a handful each of Derby, Swede, IP, and so forth. Plus about 8 packages of Exchange Select (house-branded ASR that I pick up at the Air Force Base Exchange where I work. Similar to Personna Red.)

My total cache would be around 300, based on guessing, not counting.

I've got enough to last through the end of the Mayan Calendar on 12-21-2012 ... any pending apocalyptic events that may befall us notwithstanding, if the world comes to an end, or even just life as we now know it, I will probably have more important things to worry about than being stocked up on fresh blades.

You put forth a logical argument. Prepare for the shavepocalypse.

Tho I see that Treet is missing from your list; you need some of those I would guess.

I have an alternate method of hoarding: Rather than stock up on a lot of different blades, I only hoard the ones that yield consistently excellent shaves, and limit myself to 3-4 blade brands. So I have Super I's, Swedes, and Gillette Yellows.

I'm the same way with soap: I only hoard Penhaligons.

Thank goodness I haven't figured out a way to hoard brushes yet.

I'm not sure if this would be a new thread, or merely related to the current thread, but I'll toss this post into this thread and see if it resonates.

I've been examining my fears of the shavepocalypse and considering which brands I would stock up on until (a) new producers emerge, (b) Feathers become market-dominant and their price drops, or (c) I learn to straight shave properly--my first attempts with a straight razor have been crappy (I get plenty of stubble on the razor, but my face doesn't look like I've shaved at all).

But along with a stockpile of DE blades and a desire to use a straight, there's the question of "who will be left?" Which manufacturers will remain, and for how long?

Strategically, I think that despite Gillette's (P&G's) stake in razor manufacturing on the subcontinent, the Indian and Pakistani manufacturers will be around the longest, since they will probably have a low-end DE market well into the future. I've tested Sharps, Zorriks, 7 AMs, Super-Max, Treets...have I missed any significant subcontinental brands besides Gillette 7 O'Clock? Most of these blades are "just okay" though. The Treet Platinum Specials do a good job, but I haven't tried the Green or Black packaging 7 O'Clocks.

Will the Chinese blades forever be junk? Is there a reason to suspect the Japanese, Israeli and/or Turkish manufacturers will endure longer? I'll be fine using Feathers forever if they're available, and would be fine with IPs or Derbys too. But which manufacturers will survive?

Very interesting point(s) you make.
Considering I think western independant (= not P&G/Gillette) brands might survive pretty long too. Why, because nobody except westerners can afford their blades right now and western DE-shavers are a small but, at the moment, growing number.
For these manufacturers DE-blades are just a side-show but as long as they have the equipment they don't have to invest much; they just have to sell what they produce.
I agree with you that most asian blades are only barely good enough.

My bulk stock is stored away from the humidity of the bathroom in a cool dry cupboard with a dehumidifier pack in the box. This consists of;

300 Swedes
250 Iridium Supers
300 Gillette Silver Blues
100 Feathers
80 Derby's
300 other assorted blades in quatities less than 50 of each from about 30 varieties (Wilkinson, Nacet, Sputnik, Trig, Astra, Polsilver etc)

In the bathroom I have another tub with one pack of every kind of blade I own, probably about another 100-150 blades. I predominatly swap between Derby, Iridium and Silver Blue for weekday shaves and break out the odd Swede or brand I havent had for a while at the weekend and try a new blade/razor combination.

I am waiting on some Bolzano's and Personna blades to arrive so my current total is around 1500 but will be 1700 after the next delivery.

Now that I have discovered my go to blade, Gillette 7 O"Clock Green Permasharp (India) or Yellow Sharpedge, I want to stock up like there is no tomorrow. Seeing a solid blade like the Gillette Swedes being discontinued just re-affirms the need & urgency to start stock piling.

Also, alot of what was said by Jim of Vintage Blades in the vendor interview really got me to thinking, things are changing, and not always for the better of course. I dont want to fall on that side of the ledger when it comes to blades. Soap or cream, yes, blades not so much. :001_unsur

Under the sink, in a plastic basket. 2,000 blades do not take up a lot of space, tho my bubble pack blades (like the Swedes) take up a bit more room in the basket. I'll be needing a second basket soon, else I'll keep them in a box under the bed.

I bought a 100 pack of derbys, used 10 of them and decided I hate them, + recieved 10 or more in sample packs. So I have 100 derbys that I'll never use, but maybe my Mrs will if she uses DE.

I have 90 Red personnas and a 99 israelis because I was putting off buying the 100 pack of feathers. I really wanted to find a cheaper blade that worked for me. They were OK, but not good enough for a close shave so I went ahead and bought a 100pk of feathers anyway.
I haven't used any of them becaue I bought a few SE razors and have been using them instead of DEs.

So the only reason why I have a stockpile is because I was buying in bulk but haven't used them because I've been shaving with a GEM instead.
I did give my Mrs a blue tip and she has used a few blades though.

Must have well over 350 Wilkinson Swords DE blades. Over the last two week I stopped by the Family Dollar store and saw BIC Sensitives disposables in a buy 10 get 5 for free packs for the out the door price of $2.65.
Last count on them is 468!

Somebody stop me!!!:w00t:

Just did a inventory check today.

The following:
785 Wilksons Swords made in Germany
300 Dorco #301
30 Dollar Store Brand
30 Personna Brand
486 BIC Sensitive Disposables

The grand total so far is 1,631.

If I use each blade and disposable for just 3 days I have a supply for over 13 years.

Am I sick or what!

I picked up 200 Red Pack Israeli blades recently. I've loved these blades, especially after comparing them to other blades in my sampler pack. It's an added bonus that they are one of the least expensive blades out there.

Absolutely on the red pack Personnas. Good blade and cheap. Just bought another 100. Does this count only DE blades, or should I add single edge and injectors?
