View Full Version : Funky little straight...

This was in a "care package" of razors and stuff I acquired awhile ago and finally had time to go through. I'm not a straight razor user or collector, but I do look at the pretty pictures here from time to time. I've never seen anyone post pics of or talk about anything like this before. The blade is etched "The Real". Pat. appl., with Pat. appl. for & Mfg. USA on the little removable comb guard. The guard is made to pivot from one side to the other and slide on and off. It's a little thing, only 6" long with a 2.5" 5/8 blade. It's really well made; it almost looks like something made by a knife manufacturer that wanted to get into razors.
I have no idea if the case is correct, and Google didn't turn up anything on The Herold Bros. Co. from Cleveland. Any of you straight razor collectors ever seen this one?

I like it!
Not so much the guard, but the razor itself looks like it would be fun, and in great shape.

I have never seen that before. Very interesting. Looks like a hybrid between the safety straights offered by that one company and a real straight.

Actually it looks like an old razor used for cutting hair rather than for shaving. That guard is used for thinning and texturizing.

The guard was a ploy by manufacturers at the turn of the century to keep the boys using straight razors instead of moving over to the safety razors. You had a choice to use it with or without the guard. I have two of them. One's in ratty shape and the other is broken... :frown:
Wanna sell that one?

Doesn't look disposable to me either. But it does look pretty nice, makes me want to just cover the tang on one of my scaleless blades and use it as is :tongue_sm

I have a J.A. Henckles with a comb guard that I picked up from a local antique mall. Need to do some restoration on it right now.

I've just shaved with them without scales!
Its actually not hard. The hard part is honing without scales. Thats rough.:cursing:

I shaved with a razor that had no scales the other day. It was ok, but did miss the lateral support normally provided by the scales poking between my fingers.
I guess this razor is different though because it seems to be designed for trimming head hair and I imagine a different grip would be used.
