View Full Version : Alcohol based Aftershaves bad for your skin??

It seems like everywhere I turn around this past few weeks I've been finding stuff that claims one shouldn't used alcohol based aftershave splashes, due to something or another negative(I can't remember exactly what it was right now)
Has anyone else heard this? Is there any truth in it?
Personally I think it's probably some sort of conspiracy made up by the people who make balms & witch hazel, and the hippies. Mostly just the hippies that work at Whole Foods, but the rest are probably involved somehow too.

I prefer them to non-alc AS. I'm a fan of alc AS splashes and will continue to use them as long as they work for me.

Witch Hazel has alcohol in it, so the folks that make it aren't in on the conspiracy. Some balms have alcohol as well. Guess that leaves the hippies.

They are the same people who want to get rid of tallow in soaps

I can't use balms or lotions of any sort. They tend to make me sweat profusely for the next 4-5 hours, regardless of the weather. I look like Robin Williams on stage, Therefore I own and use nothing but splashes. Even if I didn't have the problem with balms, I would probably still prefer Splashes. They just seem better to me, not to mention more traditional.

I knew it! Damn Hippies...

Oh yeah, the Vegans. Another subdivision of the Hippies.
I'm a huge Tallow fan as well. I think I've damn near reached Tallow Snobdom.
I'm gonna throw a huge temper tantrum if they try and take the Tallow out of anymore of my soaps. Especially AOS.
Damn those stinky Hippies.

We should have known. They already got their mitts into shaving soap, what with all the patchouli products!

It's a matter of personal preference.
I have dry skin, so I use only Alcohol-Free products.
But if I had oily skin, I would use alcoholic stuff, as they are cheap and smell great

I think a lot of cheap alcohol-based after shaves are mostly alcohol and water, with very little in the way of skin care ingredients, which gives them a bad rap. I could really never use the drugstore brands with my sensitive skin. Some of the higher-quality splashes I've discovered here (Harris Pink, Speick, etc.) are far superior and can be quite enjoyable, although I still can't use them every day for an extended period of time.

+1. I have dry skin as well and products that have more alcohol tends to dry out my skin further. However, I do really enjoy splashes, so I still use them from time to time. I just follow up with a balm.

Weird, I went to school with a kid named Eric Huntley. But he is a music tech major at U of M in Ann Arbor, MI
Anyways, like has been said already, hippies suck, alcohol AS doesn't. If you like it and it has positive results, keep using it. Alcohol is a great astringent, to close up yours pores and "tighten" the skin, and a great antiseptic, to get into the pores and prevention infection (like when you cut yourself, or cut to close and risk an ingrown hair)
I use non-alcohol balm, alcohol balm, and an alcohol splash myself.

Very strange indeed, I'm pretty sure my surname isn't very common, but to find someone with my first AND last name is really weird.
I tend to have (what I consider to be) fairly average "normal" skin. Very little seems to dry it out, so I've never had much experience with moisturiziners either.
Like I was mentioning earlier, I can't use balms at all, I wonder if that has something to do with skin types?
Just out of curiosity, Do they make any alcohol free splashes that anyone knows of? I certainly don't plan on converting or anything, I'm just wondering what those damn Hippies have been cooking up.

Hippies, for sure.
They don't want the truth to come out: Good splashes like Proraso and Saint Charles Shave have moisurizers. I can't use them much in the winter, but I like them in the spring and summer.
And, as everyone knows, hippies don't shave.

You should use whatever works best for you. Don't let other people's bad experiences keep you from experimenting and making your own decision.
Some people say not not use alcohol-based aftershave. Try it yourself and judge for yourself!

#1 that. Personally I like the burn. I know the splash is working. Keeps my shaves honest

Alcohol can strip your skin of natural oils. If you have dry skin or use other products that also dry your skin (like benzoyl peroxide) then it can be a problem. If not, you probably don't need to worry about it.

This sounds like a Clubman Rob conspiracy to hoard all the Pinaud products for himself...I've seen his shelves!!!

Nice to hear someone from Portland knocking hippies, I'm impressed. I believe that to be major hippie country up there. Hopefully you can spread your attitude to more people around there.
These are also the same people who want to eliminate tallow soap. Everything that works really well will eventually be history.

I think Aqua Velva is good for my skin. I use it every day. The glycerin in it makes up for the drying effect of alcohol. Few other alcohol splashes work as well for me, however.

That glycerin sure does give you a smooth face when all is said and done, and the smell lasts forever without being overwhelming.

Here's how I approach this.
I throw on alcohol splashes because the shaving soaps I use are so frikkin' moisturizing that even if the alcohol drys the skin a little, it's no match for all the goodies my skin has been soaking in during the lather passes. I "pre-lather" and "post lather", for the record (meaning a lather and rinse before the first shaving lather, and a lather during cleanup).
If I ever do worry about dryness from alcohol splashes, I'll add 5-7 drops of glycerin to the bottle and continue using the product.

My deal is that soap makes my skin oily. If I follow a soap shave with an alcohol AS, it minimizes the oily skin after affect.
So in my case, I'd have to say alcohol AS is good for my skin.

1. I hate hippies. I love videos of cops giving them the almighty beat down at hippie protests. I like my carbon footprint to be large and excessive, my brush to be full of true animal hair, and my soap to be full of animal fat. And I especially love the smell of coal burning.
2. I wish I could use alcohol based a/s balms as I love the scent of the C.O. Bigelow Bay Rum balm but unfortunately it just burns up my face and turns it red for half the day. Splashes like Old Spice and Brute don't cause the same problems for some reason.

As far as I'm concerned alcohol splashes are the ONLY way to go. The only problem I have is that most of them use too much fragrence for my taste and burn my eyes. :(

so don't put it in your eyes!!
I kid. I will agree, I have smelled some alcohol AS that it extremely strong. Store brands are OK IMO, yet "off-brand" stuff is horrible. I stick with AV, but am going to pick up some Pinaud Clubman as soon as I get off my lazy behind.

I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Hmm, I think using isopropyl alcohol on your skin on a regular basis might be bad. I clean windows and I've read articles that extended exposure to isopropyl and methyl alcohols can be bad for your health.
I'm not sure how this translates into shaving, since I believe they use a form of ethyl alcohol.

The soaps and creams tend to over moisturize my oily skin, and alcohol based stuff dries out just enough to leave a shiney, soft surface to my skin without the greasy feeling or clogged pores.
Antiseptic too so you don't really need to bother with witch hazel and alum for their antiseptic properties (tho they do have their place).

People have been using alcohol splashes for generations with no problems - no excessive drying or cracking, no premature wrinkling, no face slippage, no peeling.
So the idea that they may cause damage doesn't worry me too much.
And quoting an obsessive neurotic squirrel like the fictional Patrick Bateman is why arguments from authority are considered logical fallacies.

Alcohol A/S do that to me.
Again, it comes down to one individual's skin type.
