I recently switched from AS balms to AS alcohol-based splashes. I've been alternating between Pinaud Clubman and Pinaud Bay Rum. I really like the bay rum scent and would like to give the Dominica brand a shot as well. What are the key differences between the Pinaud and Dominica in terms of scent and feel? I think the Dominica is actually made from bay oil rather than a perfum like the Pinaud, but I'm not sure.

I haven't tried the Pinaud, but I've been using Dominica for years -- couldn't resist the glowing description in the old J. Peterman catalogue! It's very soothing (no alcohol sting), and the scent lingers for quite a few hours without being overpowering. I even use it between shaves (just put some on, even though I'm giving shaving a rest this Saturday).

Not a fan of Dominican Bay Rum (regular). The scent, on my person, lasts about 2.5 minutes. And for those 2.5 minutes, its not even enjoyable. Its a sickly-sweet bay scent. Almost sour.

In Addition, the mouth of this bottle is large and when you pour it out it makes a mess....no two ways about it.

If you want a Real Bay rum splash, go with St. Johns Bay Rum. That is the real thing.

I guess the longevity, and maybe even the scent, depends on body chemistry and, of course, personal tastes! As to the mess issue, though, it is an awkward bottle. But I find it works find if I put my index finger over the bottle neck opening while splashing the bay rum into my palm.

I may try St. John's out of curiosity, but I wasn't thrilled with their lime aftershave.

Absolutely!

If you are a fan of Bay Rums, you owe it to yourself to try the St. John. I hope you enjoy it

The Pinaud IMO smells great, but burns like nothing I have ever used before. The Dominican smells good to, but doesn't last as long. I can't use the Pinaud, so I have it for sale now with some other items I have to say though that I really like the Pinaud and so do many other members

I haven't tried the Pinaud - yet:biggrin: , but I'm a big fan of the Dominica. Great Bay Rum scent. Try them both, neither are prohibitively expensive.

St. John's is great, but like most all "real" bay rums, the scent doesn't last long. Same with Dominica. Great scent but doesn't last long. All "real" bay rums with eo or bay oil are quick fading scents. To bad because I really like them. Casualty of the scent. Caswell Masseys bay rum, michelsens, is real nice also, but again, fairly short lived. Others have said Meehan's is fairly longer lived. I haven't tried it so can't say.

Meehan's is nice, and lasts a few hours (4-5) though a slight trace can be detected later into the evening as well. Same goes for St. John.

The Meehan, however, has more of a "rum" influence than other bay rums.

Pinaud Bay Rum last several hours for me. But the burn is intense after a BBS shave, but quickly goes away. And my wife likes the scent.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned my favorite bay rum --- Ogallala.:thumbup1: It's got a smooth smell and is soothing to the skin. As far from the strong smelling and burning Pinaud as you can get.:mad5:

Just got a bottle of the Pinaud yesterday and used it this morning. I love that smell!

Not much burn and I can still smell it occasionally.

Heaven!

Ill use the Dominica as an asftershave to tone the skin, then later apply the clubman for its scent. Or ill use the Col. Conk, It has a long lasting scent to.
So dominica as the aftershave, then clubman or Col. Conk for the scent.

OK, how can a Bay Rum be both sickly sweet and almost sour at the same time? And as for the bottle opening, I just but my thumb over the opening and dribble the liquid out, no big deal.

I've tried many bay rums over the years,I would rank dominica as #1,it has the purest bay leaf scent..

Yes I am Bay Rum hound myself. The pinaud is one of my favorites but compared to Dominica they are totally different. I love them both but for different reasons. The pinaud is cloves and cinnamon and smells great as you know. The Dominica is much more subtle and is only essence of bay oil and rum. I find it smells wierd in the bottle but I love the scent on me. It's very soothing and refreshing and I often use it as an all over body splash.
Ogalalla is really great too and not to be overlooked.

When I use Speick shave stick, I can catch phantom whiffs of it 4 hours later (that is a good thing IMO)

LOL... That's what sold me on it also many years ago.

They are like night and day (Pinaud and Dominica). I enjoy them both but the Pinaud is in no way, shape, or form REAL Bay Rum. Dominica and Superior 70 (to name a few) are genuine bay rums.

I find St. Lucia even a bit lighter than the Dominica, each with their own characteristic tones. It is a small detail but for me it is all about the glass bottle and the plastic bottle products... they don’t do much for me.

I haven't tried many, but Captain's Choice and Ogallala are my "go to" Bay Rums.

I've used Pinaud and it is the foulest smelling Bay Rum I've ever smelled. I absolutely hate it!!

You really ought to try a few Bay Rums. For me, Bigelow is the bomb. I absolutely love.
