SO... I got my FIRST safety razor this past Friday - it's a Merkur Long-handle something or other. Along with the razor came an assortment of blades. The first blade I used was the Merkur, the one that was inside the box.

First shave: very good!

Second shave: very, very good!

Today, after 5 shaves (I changed the blade and have been using a Dorco blade since yesterday) I've really got the hang of it and am thoroughly digging my new process.

I'm not a very happy shaver and thanks to all of you for suggestions and input.

Cheers!

-Ron

Congratulations! The Merkur long handle is a fine razor.
I am surprised that you got good results with the Merkur blade. I think that as you try different blades you'll notice a marked improvement in the quality of your shaves. Cheers

Ron, First, congratulations and welcome. Second, if you haven't learned anything else here... we love razor porn.

Ron, welcome to the group. Great razor and a great start on a fabulous journey. It just keeps getting better. Visit often and stay late. We're looking forward to hearing more from ya.

My first wet shave was with a long handled Merkur HD and Merkur blades. I remember feeling the same pleasant satisfaction you must be experiencing.

Keep up the shaving and experiments with tons of different creams, soaps, blades and razors! You're in for a long (and expensive!) haul.

great work Ron! I too didn't mind the Merkur blades once I got my prep right but it's not most people's blade of choice.

Congratulations man! It's a nice feeling to have a fine shave and know you've done it the right way. I was actually kind of nervous the first time with a D/E. Now it's all relaxation and working on technique. Had a great shave this morning and it set the tone for a pretty good day all around. Hope you have more of the same.

+1
I myself had a terrible experience with Merkur blades, but as I went along with different brands, I got better and better shaves. (technique helped out too!)
