Rethinking the Injector

I purchased an Injector a while back, one with a Bakelite handle, bought some of the Chinese blades on the auction site, and proceeded to have one of the worst shaves ever. First pass, there was hardly any reduction, so I finished with a DE. I set the Injector aside, thinking it might not be for me, YMMV and all that.

I picked it up one more time, thinking the problem was technique/prep, first stroke, and the pulling/tugging was terrible. Set the razor on the shelf and stayed in DE land until last night.

My wife was talking to her hair stylist about my new hobby of shaving, and probably making fun of me, my small collection of razors. He gave her an Injector with a Bakelite handle to give to me. I wasn't too excited about hte razor, but I cleaned it up, and decided to compare it to the one I already had, I noticed some slight differences, so they must be a year or so apart, but the biggest thing I noticed was the blade. The blade in my Injector was, to the naked eye, visibly ragged! I borrowed some reading glasses, and low and behold, a bad blade!

I put in a new blade for this morning's shave, and let me tell you- that is a nice razor! I got a DFS in two passes.

So, what's the lesson? I guess you can't judge a razor on one blade, if a razor doesn't work well, try a new blade, it might help!

I have owned/used about every razor that has existed in the past 50 years and it seems to me that the Schick Injectors especially the E & G versions are perhaps the most versatile shaving devices I have used. They remind me of a sports car in the way you can maneuver around your face particularly beneath the nose and around the lips. They would seem to be very beneficial to those wearing facial hair because of their size and configuration.

When I began shaving I switched from Gillette Techs and Super Speeds to the Schick because it used stainless steel blades and for the next 50 years I have always had one on hand even though the blades of today I think are not of the quality of the Platinum/Platinum Plus era. Personna does make a 20 blade cartridge for replaceable blade straights but it cannot be used with an Injector. For a basis of comparison I also use 1912 SE, DE Gillette New and a Barbasol.

The old, bakelite handled jammies can be a bit rough, and I think the epitome of the genre was the L type.

when i got mine my 1st shave was a 'mare:frown:

that was with a new blade that came from the dispensor and i thought these things were supposed to be idiot proof shave wise:confused:

tried another night with another blade from the same dispensor and :w00t:
excellent shave

i guess i did the same thing as you and felt a bit :tongue_sm & :blushing:

My injectors are quickly becoming contenders to knock off my 38C as my go-to razor. I use Ted Pella blades (haven't tried any others yet). I don't think I can tell the difference in shave quality between my G and I types. I'm going to give my E type a first run in the next couple days, but I doubt it'll be any different. With a light touch I get a very comfortable yet super close shave. It's fairly aggressive on the whiskers, but somehow mild on the skin.

I've been using a beat up Schick dial for the past week and enjoy every shave.. no nicks, no irritation.. pure bliss.

On the days when I don't have the time to really go through my regular shave routine I alway grab one of my injectors. My Pal adjustable, even on the most agressive setting, is especially easy to use, and I've never got a nick or razor burn while still getting a great shave.

Great resource, Tiger. Wow! I just found out that the caramel pre-eversharp Schick in the blue case that I just picked up for $5 at a local antique store is a somewhat rare WW2 Navy edition.
