View Full Version : Cream as a Face Soap?
I am fairly new to wet shaving though I have been reading the forum for a bit. Here I go venturing out to post something.
I was wondering if anyone uses a shave cream as a soap. I would like to get my basics for traveling down to a minimum and would like a cream that I could use as a soap to wash my face at night as well. And that would work brushless in case I was in a hurry and couldn't let a brush dry.
Just curious.

shaving soap would work if it is glycerin based

Yeah I don't think a cream would work... but a soap probably would
I would like a cream that is in a tube versus a soap that gets everything wet. Any creams that have glycerin?

Most creams have glycerin (the good ones do, at least).
I really don't see a reason why a cream can't be used as a face cleanser. I even use a brush to wash my face sometimes.
However, there are few creams I'm partial to, and it doesn't include any of the 3T's...so I can't recommend those for facial cleansing.

Might the opposite approach work as well or better? Buy an olive oil or glycerin bar of body soap and use that to shave with?

I swear I read about someone using olive oil soap with good success, but damn if I can find the thread.

I recall that as well, they may have also been comparing it to "the cube". Truly, it may work....and at the very least as a primer for some superlather with a cream.

A few weeks ago I posted that I was thinking of using the big-ass block of Papoutsanis olive oil soap that I bought, for shaving -- it just seemed the perfect size for taking my little Rooney travel brush to. But I never got around to actually doing it (call it laziness, or call it common sense -- it could be either). If I do, I shall report...
Thanks for the responses. I am now trying to figure out which of my creams have glycerin and am going to start using them as a soap for a while and see how it goes.

You also might want to look into the shave soap "sticks" from QED. They're perfect for travel - and will give you a helluva shave to boot.

yeah, i'd vote for the olive oil soap to shave with, but personally i'd just take both a cream to shave with and a bar of soap to wash with.
