I've always loved to take pictures and have a decent eye for it. I just haven't had a real nice quality camera until about a year ago when I got a D70s for work doing graphic design.

Anway, here's a few pictures I've taken recently (most within the past couple weeks).

The panda was shot at the san diego zoo 8/7/06 with my Nikon d70s and 70-300mm nikor ED lense.

I really enjoy photography and have a Canon SD550 pocket digital camera and a Canon Elan 7N SLR film. The only lens I have for the SLR is a 50mm/f1.4 lens. Unfortunately I really don't know how to adjust the settings on my SLR to get proper exposure and thus I don't use it much. I really need to find/take a class on using SLR cameras in manual mode.

Here are several I took with the Canon SD550:

Obviously the middle one is the blown up version of my avatar.

Matt, those are some really sweet shots. How do you like the d70? I've got a d50, and i'm thinking about upgrading to the d70s or the d80. Also, is that you surfing, or someone you know?

Do you want to keep that D50 when you buy D70? Or want to sell it?

That's my friend I surf with back at home. Shot was taken at wind and sea beach in san diego (la jolla area). It's a shore break so it's really easy to get nice close up pictures.

I really love my d70, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone since the d80 is such a great improvement. Especially the newer model of my ED lense now has VR (vibration reduction).

If you don't plan on doing large prints, I suppose a d70 would work fine for you since you don't need the 10 MPXL ccd. I can get really good large prints by blowing up images I save as fractals.

I've got a Nikon D70 for my digital photography needs, and I really enjoy it. Ive got the lower end, decent lenses; it's minimizing shake that gets me. I will say that I've gotten some photos that have made the purchase of the gear worth it to me though.

I really like the surfing action photo - looks like you got the guy at the moment of him falling off. The macro of the flower has great color and composition.

Sweet, I'm actually going to be down in la jolla in a few weeks with my girlfriend, hopefully a nice little sw will grace me with its presence :p Do you know who shaped that board and/or glassed it?

Also, thanks for the opinion on cameras. It'll probably still be a few months until I make my decision/purchase one, but I appreciate it.

Nice photos all.

In the late 70's, I worked as an engineer for a company called Vivitar. In the 80's I was part owner of a one hour photo place. I've used 35mm to 4X5. Now I just play with a Canon SD550

I do pictures (both moving and still) for a living. I work in an advertising studio. I'd list the equipment I use, but don't want to make anyone to jealous. We got a brand new full package of Canon lens and 2 bodies a year and a half ago. Now I have almost everything I need, however if we had any money left, I have a couple lens I still wouldn't mind geting:biggrin:

I'm absolutely amazed. Every photo is posted is brilliant! Cheers to all! Excellent! Matt, maybe you should just drop out of school and be a photographer, those are as good as anything I've seen. At first when you said you, "had an eye for it" I figured it was BS but not after seeing those it was a huge understandment.

Everyone's photo's are awesome! Maybe we should have a new area, Photo of the Day, where members can post photos they've taken (tasteful of course). I would be a great way to show off all the talent here.

hehe, thanks for the awesome compliments. I worked a couple years as a graphic designer, picking up how to use a plethora of programs on the fly. BTW, graphic design and photography aren't the most well paid jobs and don't have the longest lifespan (like 5-6 years on average for graphic design) and as much as I love it... i'd still be able to do work as an electrical engineer and take pictures on the side.

I agree, the video and picture forum is too shaving/tutorial related for me to post any non-shaving related pictures. Then again, this isn't a photography forum and I wouldn't want to detract from the reason we're all here.

I've been into photography for a few years now. i used to work for Canon and fell in love with the EOS 20d. However, the money isn't around to buy one right now, so i use a small 4 megapixel Canon PowerShot S410 ELPH. It definitely doesn't have the aperture of the Nikon dSLR shots you guys took, but these at least are decent.

I have a great old 35 mm film camera (Nikon FA, two AI-s lenses, motor drive, etc), but I never use it anymore. Its a shame.

I have a digital Nikon Coolpix 4500 that is about 3 or 4 years old. I don't use it much anymore, either.

The only thing that comes close to my "photography" hobby is that about 10 years ago I had my own dark room with all the bells and whistles to develop my own black and white photos. The dark room was installed in the backyard and as soon as I had some spare time I would get in there for complete days until I had the results I wanted. I had enough spare time for that during my college days.

These days I'm way too busy with work and other personal obligations that this hobby has come to a halt, although I personally consider it as a "pauze". As mentioned in another thread I'm looking to buy a decent high quality camera to take up my hobby again although it will be digital instead of analog photography.

There are several different ways to do it, all getting different results.

I'll start putting it together.

I am seriously outclassed here. But this used to be a bit of a hobby of mine. Always film, never really felt like I had the money to invest in a good digital. And, by the same token, I have always used a Canon AE-1 or AE-1 Program. Yes, I have lost a few good shots to poor focus....

Unfortunately, I don't have that many scanned in, although if I ever get my film scanner hooked up, that may improve.

Here (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/shmoses/index.html) is a link to a ten year old webpage with some, though. (For the record, I am aware that some of these are crap).

I have a question about all of this. GREAT pictures by the way everyone. I have always been interested in photography but never really followed through with it. This thread has be wanting too. Would classes be a good idea, like at the the community college? and what type of camera and things would be good to buy for someone just starting out?
Thanks in advance for the help here.

Hi Michael,

Classes certainly have helped me, but I've probably learned more from books and magazines. As for the type of camera, everybody but me seems to have gone digitial already, and I know a DSLR is in my future. But if you want to dip your toes in for a fraction of the cost, I recommend the least expensive film SLRs from Canon or Nikon. Canon's Rebel series will cost you about $200 with a lens, and it has autofocus. Nikon's least expensive manual focus is about the same price, or less. Either way, set the camera to manual exposure, and learn what photography is all about--the control of light. If you start with everything set automatically, you may get some great pictures but you won't know why, and most of your pics won't be so great. That's my 2 cents--from someone retro enough to shave with a DE.

Thats what I want to do too. Know why the picture turned out the way it did and what adjusting it this way and that does. Any suggestions on mags and books too?

I really enjoy photography and have a Canon SD550 pocket digital camera and a Canon Elan 7N SLR film. The only lens I have for the SLR is a 50mm/f1.4 lens. Unfortunately I really don't know how to adjust the settings on my SLR to get proper exposure and thus I don't use it much. I really need to find/take a class on using SLR cameras in manual mode.

Obviously the middle one is the blown up version of my avatar.

Adam,

Look for the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson - it goes into exposure in decent depth, and gives you some guidelines you can use for setting exposure that work QUITE well for landscape and general portrait photography.

I get the itch to get into photography pretty regularly. I want to get a Pentax K1000 and really learn the old school way first.

Bob -

Honestly, you can learn just as well on a digital, and you'll make up the price difference in roughly 100 rolls of film, by the time you pay for the film, processing and prints.

Just resist the temptation to "pray and spray"!

Great shots, everyone! Looks like we're definitely a multitalented group!

I'm an avid amateur photog - mostly landscape, sports and events. I'm still learning every time I pick up the camera!

Here's a few of my faves. (mnealphotography.smugmug.com)

Try The Photographer's Handbook and other books by John Hedgecoe; and books published by National Geographic and Kodak. Popular Photography and Imaging is the most common American photo magazine; their pophopto.com website has some good information, as well. In addition, I agree with the post here noting that a digital camera can pay for itself over the course of 100 or so rolls, so don't ignore that option. At a minimum, though, choose a camera that allows for manual, apperture-priority, and shutter priority settings so that you can learn the relationships between apperture (size of lens opening) and shutter speed. Another advantage of digital is instant feedback on the screen, and the ability to chuck the bad ones. Have a great time!

I might have missed this, not feeling too well today. But, would it be worth buy a digital AND a non-digital at some point. Or just stick with one completely?

Well, I decided to go old-school and got a Pentax Spotmatic off eBay. Now I just have to figure out how to use the darn thing.

I'm trying to learn stuff about photography, and getting quite a bit of help from Duggo over PM's.

Besides my SOTD pics (most of which I am proud of) one of the best shots I have so far was this one below taken a few weeks ago from a window in my apartment. I sent it into NBC5 and they aired it with the weather photos:
