View Full Version : Baby Powder - Thoughts?

A bit of an odd subject, but alas, we are all men here (maybe a few exceptions.... )
I know several English gents who are adamant about applying baby powder to their nether regions after showering. It apparently goes hand in hand with a splash of cologne and deodorant in your daily regime of hygienic activities. Supposedly it keeps you dry and pleasant smelling in an otherwise sweat-prone and unpleasant area. I noticed that other than Johnson&Johnson, DR Harris as well as other men's care lines make a baby powder. I saw the thread on "Balla" sack powder, but that was a bit obscure.
In all honesty, do any of you chaps have thoughts on this? Any English gents care to chime in? It seems to be a tad more commonplace in the UK, or maybe the different English gents I have met are just weirdos......
I'm not a Brit - but this is certainly a good idea in my books... esp. f you happen to be somewhere warm.

I do believe this can be an essential part of any man's grooming habits, should he feel the need. I personally find that the original Gold Bond powder does the trick quite nicely.

talc is bad
How so?

How so?
There was some controversy with talc being linked to increased risks of some cancers. The FDA has since issued a directive ordering companies using talc to use only "non-asbestiform" varieties, which do not carry the cancer risk. However, the Balla Powder is the only talc-based product I've seen explicitly stating its talc is non-asbestiform.

The problem with talc is that under a microscope it looks just like asbestous (sp). If you keep it away from your face you should be fine. I use it and I just make a great efort to keep it away from my face. I would try the Balla powder if you can it sounds good. I like Bortalco from Italy it is the most smooth powder I have used, so you need less.

I have the Balla powder and IMO it is nothing special. There are other products readily available for less money that do a better job. I think I only bought this because it was a unique sounding specialty item. When it is gone, I won't miss it.

this is just what I've been thinking about .... it is because of the climate here that mostly people use babypowder ... I do not use it ...

I make my own powder by mixing two parts corn starch to one part baking soda and adding a few drops of my favorite EO. The corn starch keeps you dry while the baking soda and EO keeps you fresh.

I do sometimes. The only problem I have is that with baby powder, sometimes by the end of the day you end up smelling worse than if you hadn't used it, especially if you are really sweating. My personal theory is that a lot of the sweat that would have otherwise evaporated is absorbed by the powder and stays on your body, contributing to odor. But if you are not sweating that much, it can help keep you comfortable and fresh. It definitely helps reduce chafing.

When in the Marines I went on a WestPac. My mother sent a staple care packages of Medicated Gold Bond, whole bean coffee and the Economist. After a while everyone in my squadron was using GB from officers to pvts.

Gold Bond or J&J-- I vary it depending on what I have at hand. I have been doing it for years. Seems also to reduce itch in that area, and help get the area completely dry after a shower-- without doing it, when I put on my skivvies I am still slightly damp down there. TMI but you asked. For those of you who don't, are you REALLY dry after your shower when you get dressed?

I know that baby powder's a great thing, but it chokes me, and leaves me wheezing for hours.

I agree with Joe. I use the Pinaud Clubman Talc for this purpose and it works great, with a much manlier scent than baby powder. Balla is overpriced IMHO.

Does anyone know if Caswell-Massey or Borotalco provide the same cooling effects of Gold Bond? I like the added tingle from Gold Bond but it has a medicinal smell. They list a lot of brands on www.bondyourboys.com but they don't have many details about the individual brands. It says that they are going to have product reviews in the near future though.

I've tried the CM Aura of Patchouli. Its quite nice, and has a good scent....but does not have cooling effect similar to that of Gold Bond.
I've seen Bortalco, and it also does not seem to contain "cooling" ingredients.

:thumbdownFYI: Cornstarch is yeast food. I would not recommend using it on skin. In the 'wound care' community we always tell people not to.

Pinaud Clubman is good also. Especially in the warmer climates.
Kyle recommended I get some Talc for my neck, because my collar rubbed the neck and I became irritated all over. I bought pinaud Clubman and I love it. The talc saved me and, I guess I will have to try the "downstairs" application to see how it goes.

Baby powder? Depends on the circumstances. If I am not getting dressed immediately it is not so important - I can dry off naturally, and if I am wearing loose clothes and/or going commando, I probably wont bother; but if I am wearing briefs and low rise, close cut trousers (pants as you quaintly say in US) I will always use powder.
I always use powder before donning my lycra cycling shorts.
I always use basic unscented powder labelled "Baby" or "Family" - I can't be fussed with expensive scented stuff.

I always use J&J baby powder on the boys after I shower. It keeps them dry and prevents chafing.
If I'm wearing a kilt, I use bodyglide. That prevents chafing.

Riding a scooter in 90+ degrees, I've learned to dress for the weather under my riding gear. That means usually I'm wearing moisture wicking fabrics if possible, and now days I always wear moisture wicking underwear from Sierra Trading Post. It works pretty good, though doesn't seem to hold up quite as well as cotton underwear. Cotton underwear draws damp fast, if you weat it, you might consider changing underwear twice a day if it bugs you. Just a thought. Cotton sucks, it just tends to turn mushy, doesn't breath all that much, and it is like wearing a wet T-shirt, literally.
I also have moisture wicking socks. They work great even under boots that don't breath much. They have silver threads, occasionally I find them at Wal-Mart or K-Mart under the Jerzee brand name. Hard to find though, I'll have to search for an online alternative.

Gold Bond from the giant warehouse-store yellow bottle. That container also serves to hide a decent volume of shaving stuff!
Only a little bit during the winters; summertime, I use it ankle-shoulder.
After a long hot day, it's nice not to be sticky and sweaty-nasty at the end.:thumbup1:

I have used Clubman for years, but I don't know if it is available in the UK. Fine, manly scent.
Am I the only one still trying to understand "batwing" syndrome?
Power if fine, but on a personal note- better to check with your significant other to see if she is concerned with the powder you are using and if that will curtail anything- sometimes better to make sure about these things:thumbup1:

Wil, I believe Batwing syndrome is when "they" stick to each leg, giving the appearance of "batwings"

The extremely dry Arizona climate (at least I'm guessing most of the state is dry, my only personal experience is with Phoenix) may leave one less prone to the unpleasant batwings syndrome, but here in sticky Eastern Kansas, powder is an absolute necessity in the summer if one is to avoid odour and batwings.
