What razor/blade combos work well for you? I'm particularly interested in hearing from those who've been double edge shaving for an extended period of time and have had a real chance to sort this out.

Best combo I've found is a Sledgehammer Slant (Merkur 39C) paired up with a Feather blade ... however, this combo is at its best when harvesting 3+ days of stubble, so I can't use it every day. When I do use it, I get BBS in 2.5 passes almost every time, regardless of which soap or cream or other products are put into the play.

I also like putting an Astra-SP blade in my 34G (Merkur HD Gold,) and this has been my go-to combo for many months now.

I just recently added a Progress to my rotation, still experimenting with that one, so I haven't figured out which blade works best here, but I'm leaning toward the Astra.

FWIW, I've been wet-shaving with a DE for a little over a year.

For me there is no best.
I like Feathers in adjustable razors like the Fatboy and Progress, but find them harsh in aggressive razors like an Aristocrat.
I like Derbys and IPs in the Aristocrat and find these blade work well for me in opened comb razors like the NEW, New Standard and Old Type.

Cooncatbob... I tried to edit the word "best" out of the title of this thread and couldn't. The question is: what combos do you like and use.

Red Tip + 7 O"Clock Yellow or Green = BBS

Happy Easter everyone :001_smile

I'd rather say that I like a combo where the sums of aggressiveness from razor and blade is the highest possible without damaging the skin. It means an aggressive razor with a gentle blade or vice versa:
A 40' Super Speed with a Feather or a Merkur/HD Rocket with a Derby or Crystal, both giving a BBS without razor burn or irritation. YMMV.

Gillette Superspeed, I like the feather.
In everthing else, Merkur HD, Red Tip, I prefer Red Pack IP's.

My favorites:

Either a Red IP or Gillette Yellow

paired with

A Merkur 38C (Barberpole) or 39C (Schräg Vorschlaghammer).

My new found favorite is a Progress with an Astra Superior, I had to find a replacement for the the Swedish G's and this combo is the BEST by far of any other I have used! :w00t:

Wow... I think it's been over a year now since I've been DE shaving. Guess you're always learning.

My almost exclusive combo now is a vintage Slant with a red IP blade. I get very close shaves, and usually no irritation. I can't seem to get as good a shave out of any razor (and I own a few Gillettes), which isn't to say i don't get a good shave. It's not them, it's me.

I also like using an SE, Gem Junior 1920, with (I think) a Ted Pella blade. Good stuff. The stiffer blade is a different feel than the DE, but I get really good shaves out of it too.

My current favorite combo is a Gillette ball end Tech with a Feather. That's one hell of an enjoyable shave. I could use that setup every day and never get a shred of irritation. I've been happy with the Merkur Slant/Feather combo so far (3 days in), and the Rocket/Astra and Aristocrat/Astra combo as well.

I use Feathers in my adjustables and like the Derby's in almost everything else.

I'm now getting some consistency with Astra-SP's in my 38C so this is top of my list (so far). I'll be trying my first Derby's later this week though and then feathers next month all from my sampler.

Merkur HD + Derby Extras seem to do ok for me, although I need to try different blades.

I find that Red Pack and Swedes works good in every razor but today I shaved with a Merkur HD with a IP and that was fantastic, better than with a Swede or an red pack.
I find that Astra works great with my super adjustable.
Derbys with my super speed.

Crystal,IP wonderful!

Goes to show you, I didn't get on with them at all in my HD. I'd put the Derby, Red Pack, DORCOs, etc above them.

After wet shaving for the past year and a half and experimenting with a Futur, a Muehle R89 and a Slant, and various blades from a sample pack, I've settled on a Slant and Feathers. No other combination I've put together renders the same quality of shave as I get from this combo. I do use Feathers in my travel, open comb Merkur from which I get acceptable results.

Fatboy with feather

You honestly have to just try out some blades, so many different razors, everyone has a bit of a different technique, just have to find what is right for
YOU

I like Derbys in my HD, I get a soft shave that way. I also have a travel razor that exposes a lot more of the blade though, and it makes a Derby feel like a feather would in the HD.

It's definitely an interesting exercise to try a brand of blade you like in a few different razors to see what happens.

I recently acquired some Super Iridiums, and they have been exceptional in my No. 66 and Aristocrat Jr. I'm going to try them in my HD and Mergress this week.

Crystal blades in a '50s SuperSpeed or FatBoy. Works well for me with most any soap or cream.

'40's Super Speed with an Israeli Personna. Nine shaves with the same blade, without any tugging or pulling. Still a comfortable shave!

I put swedes in my red tip superspeed for a long time. When they ran out, I switched to yellow 7's. Recently I've been developing quite a fancy for Feathers. My initial thinking was they might be too aggressive but it feels much better during the shave than any combination so far. ATG goes almost as smooth as WTG.

Merkur HD with a Dorco 300 (I know I am in the clear minority here).
