SOLD -I'm selling this unused, unlapped hone because I'm changing my gear. I bought this at the Japanese Woodworker (see link in reply below) place in Alameda,CA. The merchant said it was about 4,000 to 6,000 grit.

They sold it to me for $75 plus tax, but told me it retails for close to $100.
I'm selling it for $70. (Including shipping.) I'd prefer a check or money order, rather than go through paypal. As such, I'll need the check to clear before shipping.

The measurements are about 3.25" x 5.5" I have lacquered the sides and bottom as directed in order to prevent cracking. As seen in the pictures, its quite a beautiful piece. It has abrasion marks on the top surface from when I sanded off the bits of lacquer that formed as it was drying after conditioning. Also, seen in the third picture is the detail of a natural defect at the edge, and the vein along the top. This should not effect its performance.

While I'm relatively new to this site, if my legitimacy is in question for any of you, please PM me and I'll try and direct you to some other members or sites that may vouch for me.

Thanks for looking!
-Lear

Do you recall what grade it is?

What do you mean by grade? If it's the grit, he says it's 4K-6K. Do you mean hardness or something else?

I think he was referring to the grading used on Narutaki stones, as seen here (http://www.japanwoodworker.com/dept.asp?s=JapanWoodworker&dept_id=13119). I think the grade was based on quality and size.

Exactly. Been thinking of picking one up and this one could fit the bill.

I don't recall them mentioning what grade. I'll be glad to get back to you on that, say, by Monday.

Well, I just spent nearly twenty minutes with Jack over at Japan Woodworker. He was kind of vague about giving me a definitive grade rating on the stone. What he did mention is that this is unique to what is offered on their website, because it is a higher quality, taken from a better, yet quickly diminishing source--most likely from Kyoto.

I asked him directly if it's anywhere from grade 3 to 5. He said no higher than five, due to its size. I'm sorry for not having more answers.

Professorchaos, if you are interested let me know and I'll consider you as having first dibs.

I am also willing to trade this for a DMT 8" Coarse stone, plus $30.

Oh, sure, why not. PM me your address and I will drop a money order in the mail tomorrow.

Interestingly, they seem to be very reluctant to elaborate on what their different grades imply. The stones are all awaseto so they are all finishing hones. But do certain grades cut quicker than the others? Harder or softer? I understand that the Japanese do not rate their hones in terms of grit, but is it reasonable to infer that higher grades are higher grits? I have emailed them such questions repeatedly and haven't gotten a response. Not even so much as something saying no more information is available.
