Well the answer to that would be.... my best shave to date with a straight edge razor. that may not mean anything to anyone really, so let me describe what that means. my cheeks and sideburns are 100% BBS unlike i was ever able to get with a cartridge razor (and i used to put some force behind those), my neck is for the most part just DFS with only one or two small areas that are BBS.
well i thought i would outline what i did the past 2 nights (got my second best SE shave last night :thumbup1:) and note what was different. to see if you fine gents here might be able to tell me which of the two changes would have the biggest impact on how my shave changed.
strop razor with 40 passes (yeah i am still new to this so i do a lot of passes just in case)
put my brush to soak in very hot water
put on some jack black beard lube (using this as my preshave till it runs out)
put a hot towel over face for 3 or 4 minutes
shower
put boiling hot water on my Tabac soap let sit for a few minutes (extremely hot water from here on out was one of my changes)
soaked my lather mug in hot water shook out my brush
loaded brush and started to build my lather (change here: am using more water then i had been)
lathered up shaved WTG, wiped off with warm water and towel
shaved second pass XTG, lather shave XTG other direction,
rinse off face warm water, hot towel for 3 minutes
lather up a final time and do an ATG pass
splash cold water on face
use alum block for the first time out of curiosity (note: first and hopefully last time for this step)
splashed on some aquavelva AS
fondle face
the shave before this which i would call a DFS i did not do a ATG and i know thats why i got BBS in places this time. but both of these shaves have been a huge improvement over the shaves before them. only change was using a target water boiler for hot water and adding a little more water to my lather.
