I'd have typed this up as a post in the MLB Opening Day thread, but I think this deserves its own.
Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, was killed this morning in a three car accident in California, mere hours after having pitched a game the night before. The accident was a hit and run, and the driver, who ran a red light and caused the death of Adenhart and two others, was caught sometime later and will obviously be charged with felony hit and run among other things.
Tragedy happens in sports a lot, but the baseball season is only three or four games old...this is just a new level of terrible.
Just an awful, awful loss.

The perp had a history of drunk driving, and was tested with a blood alcohol level above what it should be.
No man knows his time. How very sad.
He had just pitched 6 scoreless innings with his dad watching, no less.
What a terrible, senseless tragedy. Three people are dead because of one man's stupidity. Enjoy life and live it well, because you never know which day will be your last.

My condolences to his family and his team mates. A senseless tragedy for sure.

I'm just thankful his father got to see that.
It's a sad, pathetic situation. What a loss. We also can't forget the others who lost their lives in this tragedy and those who lose their lives in events like this everyday. :frown:

<Sigh> So much potential, such a young life snuffed out by a drunk. It is very sad. What's sadder is how little most people think of drinking and driving. Until they are somehow affected by it. It doesn't even make a difference then, as evidenced by this driver.

Very sad story. He was a local kid here in the DC area and showed great promise.:frown:

Sad indeed. Life can be very short and should never be taken for granted.

Yes, you'd think we wouldn't need another reminder about not drinking and driving, but evidently we do. I'm definitely more focused on it since I've had kids, but I've been stunned more than once at the cavalier attitude some people have, including people I would have thought would know better.

I'm going to the game tonight. I'm sure it won't be baseball as usual.

This is absolutely mortifying. A young man is killed without warning, without provocation, and without justification, all because someone was drunk. This stuff upsets me to no end. It's so senseless.
When these tragedies happen, I wonder why DUIs and DWIs aren't a bigger deal to most people. Some repeat offenders are still driving. It's only when someone is injured or dies that people seem to care. Days earlier, I'm reading Joba Chamberlain's quotes about his DUI and he seemed more annoyed than contrite. "Everybody deserves a second chance," he said. Unfortunately, Joba, some of us don't get one.
