I just loaded a fresh-from-wrapper Dorco blade into a president and lathered up. The razor just did not work. Not tugging, more as if it did not have a blade in it at all, just skipped over the whiskers. I dropped in a Bic and got a great shave so no problem with the razor. I don't remember if I've used the Dorco-president combination before or not. Is this normal or did I get a dud blade? I recall the Dorcos being OK but not stellar in several other razors.

It depends on which Dorco. The ST-301s are decently sharp but you couldn't cut butter with an ST-300, IMHO.

There is a B&B thread discussing the differences. The ST301 has a polymer coating which adds to the sharpness of the blade. The ST300 is nowhere near as good.

In my experience with both the 300s and the 301s, they're not very good. I haven't gotten a smooth shave with either in a number of razors.

Very possible that you got a dud blade. I haven't had any problems with the ones I've had so far but sometimes QC lets a bad one through. You could also try the blade in a different razor and see what happens.

+1; that's what I came here to say. I could shave my head with the 301s but I couldn't even scrape paint with the 300s.

Ive heard it said that you can strop any DE blade by rubbing it along the inside of a wide mouth water glass.

Maybe with an old blue gillette but not with the new blades we have today.

I've never had much luck with dorco brand either.

I just used a dorco (300 ?) for the third time tonight. The first time was great but I hadn't shaved in two days. The second one did a alright job but I did nick myself and had a decent burn. Third round, crappy shave anda few nicks and some burn. I was going to give a second blade a try to see if this was a consistant result. After reading this thread, I don't think I will bother.
