Hi all,

Just procured a flare-tipped Superspeed from a member here on the B/S/T.

I started around a year ago on the Merkur HD, and have tried Derbys (didn't like at all), Swedes (loved, sob....), Israeli Personnas, and Feathers (my current favourite!).

I've read that the Superspeeds give a milder shave than the Merkur, and I can see just by looking that the blade angle, blade exposure and distance to safety bar are very different on the Superspeed. I can see how it will be milder before even using it!

With the HD I get irritation on my neck on one side every now and then (but rarely, far less than I used to). I always go for BBS, ATG as final pass.

So.... given that the Superspeed is a milder razor, how does it perform with a Feather? I'm guessing it would be a winning combo?

Would you even bother pairing it with a milder blade, like a Crystal?

Thanks! Looking forward to my first shave with it tomorrow.

Hello John, our situations look familiar. We both go for bbs with a final atg pass and we both have sensitive skin on one side of the neck and therefor sometimes irritation. So far, so good.
With a Super Speed I can't get bbs using Derbys or IP (Crystal). I like those blades and they give me a terrific bbs in both a Merkur and in a HD Rocket in two passes, wtg and atg - but my skin doesn't like this two days in a row.
I have tried Feathers in a Tech and today in the SS. In the Tech I could not get 100 percent bbs though I also did an atg pass.
In the SS today the Feather left the skin as smooth with an wtg and a xtg as the same blade did in the Tech with a wtg and an atg pass.
I have not tried to go atg with a Feather in a SS yet. But I will definitely use that combo in order to get a bbs with a SS.
I hope I haven't confused you totally with this long yada-yada? That was not my intention but this is as close as I can get trying to reach a conclusion today. Of course your skin, stubbles, and tecnique may differ a lot from mine. I look forward to read your next posts about your experiences.
Good luck

John,

I would try them all. I don't have a lot of experience with them, but I find my flare tip can be used with other types of blades more effectively than my Merkur, which seemed to work okay with Feathers. If you are used to the Feather, you are probably fine to go that route too.

I use a 1947 Super Speed with a Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge (Russian, yellow box). Great shave.

I use Personnas in just about all my razors with good results. Have only used a Feather in my 1946 fat handled tech with great results; tried a Feather in my 39c slant and it tore me up.

Derbys, red pack IPs, and 99-cent-store Personnas (believe it or not) have all worked great in my 40's SS.
