Most of the time I use Pantene Pro V. I also really like Suave Humectant, but I don't use it very often because my wife doesn't care for it.

I just bought Mama Bear's shampoo I think it is the best I have ever used. it just makes my hair feel clean without a detergent feeling, I know it might sound funny, but my hair feels cleaner.

Sue,

Do you have anything that might be good for dry scalp. Not severe in anyway but i currently use head and shoulders just to keep my scalp moisturized. I'd love to use a shampoo that decreased how often I have to condition.

Thanks,

John

I have only got the mild daily shampoo right now but it is very gentle. I have psorriasis and can only use this or the ketoconazol (sp?) prescription shampoo.. I am truly convinced that the psorriasis has been caused by SLS in shampoo amoung other reasons and the prescription stuff I have to use oddly enough has SLS in it. I feel like I am on a treadmill that goes in a circle... :blushing:

I continue to research this subject and hopefully will have a solution some day. I know a lot of people use pine tar shampoos.. but they smell horrible and also have SLS in them....

The biggest problem is folks expect huge mounds of lather with shampoo.. the only way to do that is to add a lather enhancer... and the lather enhancer will dry out your skin and cause problems. So a good shampoo will actually have very little lather in it and people don't want to use it because of this. It is a catch 22 and if anyone has found another way of doing this, I am all ears... !

But... the way it used to be done 50 years ago... was with the same bar of soap that you washed your body with. Many of the soapmakers use this method and swear by it. Just make sure you are using a good homemade CP or hardmilled soap, and be aware that it will dry your hair out some... Shampoo is much more gentle than soap but it contains irritants. Another catch 22. Use the mildest shampoo you can find is the best advise I can give you.

The best conditioner in the entire world is real mayonnaise.. ! I condition for 20 minutues and THEN wash my hair.. sometimes I will use mayo (whenever I remember to grab the mayo before heading for the bath tub) It has a lot of oil in it so be careful using around a slick shower! Bathtub is best....but it can still get slick.

No lather enhancer would be fine with me.

I would buy a bar of the 100% Coconut soap on my CP Soaps page that is made by my friend Cyndi on her farm. She superfats this 20% for me and there is only the natural coconut oil fragrance in it. Use this in the bath on your body and hair. This is hands down my favorite soap... Now that I have said that, I am going to grab a bar or two and hide them from you..... :crying: :scared:

Frederick Fekkai Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo and Apple Cider Conditioner. It works great, smells great. It takes a very small amount to do the job, a 16oz bottle lasts an average of 6 months and I shampoo every morning. I get it from Neimans.

I hear you and used to feel the same way. Look at it this way.. would you rather have oil and egg yolk in your hair (stale beer or vinegar are good rinses too by the way, they will ph balance your hair) ................or have this in your hair...?

Water (Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Glycerin, Quaternium-18, Fragrance (Parfum), Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Propylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Disodium EDTA, Potassium Chloride, DMDM Hydantoin, TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Lysine Hydrochloride, Silk Amino Acids [Alanine, Glycine, Serine, Arginine, Isoleucine, Cystine, Histidine, Glutamic Acid], Tocopheryl Acetate [Vitamin E Acetate], Borago (Borago Officinalis) Extract [Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Oleic Acid, Eicosenoic Acid], Ascorbic Acid [Vitamin C], Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone

That was my first thought, but it is an old hair treatment - I remember my big sister doing it back in the mid-1950's.

Mayonnaise has a perfect set of ingredients to make a good conditioner. Food grade oil, eggs (protein), and vinegar (acid cleansing).

I found this thread and saw Mama Bears challenge and decided to taker her up on it.

The post is a bit long but the peripheral information is quite funny.

I let my dog Molly go outside to potty and "check the perimeter." After retrieving the mayonnaise from the refrigerator and a knife from the fridge I headed to my bathroom comforted by the thought that my wife isn't home; she thinks I'm already nuts about the shaving addiction. I took the picture of the mayo on the counter and put a large glob in my palm and rubbed it into the hair.
2792
2786
Mayo in hair (I envisioned the mayo showing up more)

The first squish running through my fingers into the hair was not so pleasant, after that it was easy. I've tried dandruff shampoos that were far less pleasant. So, now that I have the mayo on my hair I realized I didn't take a picture of the mayo in my hand, for some reason I deemed it necessary. Again using the knife to retrieve the mayo I ready the camera, crap the cards full and Molly has decided she wants inside and proceeds to bark at me to let her in. Now I'm balance the camera in my arm as I find my other card, card error message appears. So now I'm holding the cold mayo in my hand as I download the contents of the small card onto my laptop.
2788
Meanwhile Molly smells mayo and thinks I have a sandwich somewhere and am not sharing it with her. She follows me around hoping for some food and licking her lips the whole time.
2789
Maybe the mayo in my hand image wasn't so important after all. Then I washed my hair as usual, after checking the hair and scalp I felt I didn't need to use conditioner but used a bit anyway, far less than usual.
2791
The pictures of the hair don't show the effects of the mayonnaise, but my scalp is certainly much more moisturized and less weighted down than when using a lot of conditioner. Using the mayo reduced substantially the need for conditioner and feels quite good when finished.

Molly is still hungry, and come to think of it so am I.

In conclusion Mama Bear is correct there is certainly a benefit to using this method of conditioning. If you look what is in our medicines and remedies it isn't even that strange comparatively speaking. Once past the first squish it's smooth sailing. The moisturizing effect works very well, I've always had dandruff issues and this may finally be the cure for it. I did leave it on for twenty minutes but didn't use the bag over my head, I couldn't figure out how the bag would alter the effect. Yes, I will use this again. Sue was right again!

I was going to say that also. However I have both in my fridge, and they both contain eggs and soybean oil. Those two ingredients are what I believe are responsible for the conditioning.

When I got my haircut today, the girl cutting my hair complained that I wasn't washing my hair right because I had dry scalp. She refused to let me go until I agreed to try some new Shampoo/leave-in treatment from Redken. Well, I guess I'm going to be trying this stuff starting tomarrow and see what it does.

On a side note... From what I've been told in the past some of the cheaper Wal-Mart, Target, CVS brands (non-professional brands) use alcohol as a filler and the alcohol can damage the hair and scalp.

Well folks, I've gone through a day of hair-wear now, and remain quite impressed. I like to cover my hair with globules of wax and hairspray, which means that when you add the grease of the day it tends to clump in a rather unpleasant fashion. It's certainly still just as oily today, but for some reason it hasn't clumped - it just feels smoother, less tangled, and it looks like a million bucks...Anyone wanna buy a wig?

I know this is an old thread, but I like to thank Mama Bear for this tip:thumbup:.
I get dry, flaky scalp periodically, esp. in winter and I found this thread while searching for shampoos.

I first tried it Sunday with Trader Joe's Real Mayonnaise. It's free of preservatives and artificial ingredients. It's made with Apple Cider Vinegar, which I have heard is good for the scalp. I think I used too much because after a few minutes oil started dripping down my forehead and back of my neck. I rinsed it off after 20 minutes and washed with Trader Joe's Nourish shampoo. This shampoo is free of laurel/laureth sulfates so normally it doesn't lather a great deal. But surprinsingly this time it did! My scalp felt refreshed and my hair was shiny without feeling oily. But the next day I had some flakes. So I used a TGel clone shampoo which I hate, but does seem to work.

This morning I was showing a little flaking again, so I used the Mayo treatment. This time I used a little less. Same great results as the first time. I checked my scalp a few hours later and there are no signs of flakes nor scaling.

I think I'm going to give up the tar shampoo for a while and just use the TJ's shampoo plus the TJ's Mayo at least twice a week. So far I like the results.
Who would've thought it

OK, first of all, the mayo thing may work but I think I'll pass on that idea. I had never found a shampoo and conditioner I felt very strongly about. Then, I tried an American Crew product which was much better than anything I had used before, and then, since I loved Nancy Boy soaps, I thought I'd give their shampoo and conditioner a try, and MAN, they left everything else, including the American Crew I liked, in the dust. The Nancy Boy styling cream is the best I've tried, too. Great stuff.

In line with comments about using the mildest shampoo possible, I would recommend shampooing a lot less frequently. If you continuously scour and strip your scalp and hair, you will do damage. If you use a lot of styling products, you are in a catch22, but I simply protect my head/hair by not shampooing all that frequently. I have no particular schedule, but when I feel it is time to, I do. It will seem weird to most at first, but really, how "dirty" is your hair after a regular day? just try brushing your hair (A densely bristled brush is good) for a few moments instead. You will be surprised at how good your hair and scalp feel when you "don't soap" every day. Never mind the "eeeww, gross" people, your hair and head will thank you for the day off.

Erm does anyone know of websites for Nancy Boy products who ship to the UK ?
My normal US supplier (www.skinstore.com) does not carry it..

I just got a haircut and shampoo the other day and she finished it with the citrus/mint American Crew conditioner. Very nice cooling/tingling effect! I'm loaded up with cheap shampoo at the moment, but considering the length of my hair (1" in front which gets spiked and sort of tapers down to the back where it's probably 1/2" or so), I'll probably spend the $17 bucks for the huge bottle of conditioner at Target. Think proraso for hair...good stuff!

I use Nancy Boy Shampoo and Conditioner. The Conditioner is the best I have ever tried, it leaves your hair silky smooth and the shampoo is very mild. I also use paul mitchell's tea tree oil shampoo and tea tree oil and lemon sage conditioner, I like the tingly feeling of the shampoo. However I still feel the Nancy Boy products are superior. MattH you can only order Nancy boy products at www.nancyboy.com or to stop in their shop in San Francisco

Clubman shampoo, clubman hair tonic and a dab of Kiehl's styling gel. That does the trick for me.

LOL...around our domicile, SWMBO keeps a jar of mayo in the garage fridge (don't ask me why as I dare not ask) with HAIR written in black Magic Marker over the Hellman's label....

This, I am told, is so I (HWMO) will not eat her (SWMBO) HAIR MAYO !!!

As for myself have been using Burt's Bee's shampoo's & conditioners which I like very much. The shampoo's don't lather up real "big head" fluffy style which I guess from reading MamaBear's elucidating post above is actually a good thing.

Was planning on trying one of MB's shave creams in near future & think I'll try a bottle of her hair 'poo too as they sound pretty danged good & she sure as heck sounds like she definitely knows what she's doing....

Am stll a newbie here but am thinking there are a dozen or so people here who really really really know what they are talking about & MamaBear is one of that group...

Since I've been using Dr. Bronner's soaps lately, I've actually been using it as shampoo as well and my hair has definitely been healthy and looks better IMO. But for shampoo and conditioner, I also use and recommend Paul Mitchell Tea Tree, MOP Basil & Mint, and American Crew Citrus Mint. Honestly, I can't say I see much difference between using Dr. Bronner's bar soaps for my hair and using one of the more expensive shampoos. I've also almost stopped using conditioner (maybe once a week) and notice my hair seems to be in better shape for it. Then again I have oily skin so I imagine I don't really need as much conditioner as others.

My wife and I bought a new kind (to us) at Costco a couple of weeks ago. It is called Bed Head by Tigi. We really like it. It clearly states that it is sold only by professional salons, but nonetheless, we got it at Costco. Go figure.
