My RAD has now expanded beyond DE razors...I have a GEM on the way. This means that I have to find a source of SE blades. What are my best options?

Some have found Gem-brand blades at Walmart, but I haven't checked ours yet. In my area (Victorville), Walgreen's stocks the Gem coated stainless blades, while CVS and Rite-Aid carry the carbon steel Treets. Which GEM did you get?

I got the Gem as part of a lot and it has not arrived yet but I think it is a Micromatic.

I also just purchased a GEM and am waiting for it to ship. It's a 1912 model. I've heard so many great things about them (esspecially from D.Irving79...) that I have to try them out for myself.
I really want a Lather Catcher also. I''ve bid on a couple on eBay, but they keep going high, and I lose out because I'm not willing to spend $60+ for one! *lol*

I have always wanted a GEM micromatic or Lather Catcher, but felt I would have a hard time getting a GOOD blade for them. Then I bought four straights and forgot about safety razors for the past few months. What is the best brand out there for SE gems? I know a lot of drug stores sell SE blades, but every drugstore blade I have ever used for a DE was horrible.
I can only use feathers on my DEs for good results, so what would the advice be on getting a really good, very sharp SE blade for a GEM?

My suggestion is to look for the American Safety Razor coated stainless blades that sell under the "Gem by Personna" name. Some of the ASR carbon steel blades shave nicely too, but I don't believe they last as long as the stainless blades.
If you want the best price on the stainless blades, you can get them from the Ted Pella website, but you have to buy 200 at a time. I'm convinced that these Gem blades from Pella are the same as the "Gem by Personna" blades that are retailed in the dispensor packs.
The stainless blades that I'm referring to, look like this . . .

These are the blades that I find at Walgreens. I get excellent shaves from them and will probably not venture out to other brands.

I have found a Independent/Small Chain Grocery store in Toledo, Ohio that sell GEM "Blue Star" SE Blades in both a packet of 5 and dispenser of 10. I had used "store brand" SE Blades in my GEM Micromatic "Clog-Pruf" with acceptable results. In the last couple days I used my GEM Micromatic (open comb version) and G-Bar with the GEM Blue Star blades and thought they are better. Hope that helped a bit.
Thanks

The Blue Stars are the ones I had in mind when I mentioned the carbon steel ASR blades. I agree that they shave very well. I just don't believe that they last for quite as many shaves as the coated stainless ones.

I've used the Blue Star blades but I think they are carbon steel. Since I don't rinse and dry my blades, I just stick with the Personna GEM blades.

Just to speak up, I have also found the Gem blades at Walgreens and they do a fine job.

I too have used the blue star blades. No problem with the shaves but the blades don't seem to last as long as I would like. I would go with the stainless if you can find it easily.

I ended up ordering the stainless from Ted Pella.
