Okay. So, today me and the wife went to a few antique stores in hopes of finding something/anything worth buying. Well, as I browsed about looking at a few auto-stroppers the owner had laying about, the wife was signaling to me like crazy. I thought little of it, but a few minutes later she came up to me to show me what all the fuss was about. Well, as it turns out, she found a 1960 Fatboy with the case!! I forgot how to breathe for a few moments, and became slightly dizzy. After regaining consciousness, I calmly and cooly looked at the price tag , expecting the worst. Turns out, the bad boy was only $4.50!! After jumping for joy like a complete idiot, I grabbed the Fatboy and the fat handled Tech I had found, and nonchalantly breezed on over to the register. All in all, I spent $14!! Oh, the Tech? It's got the triangular slots, which I've heard is a little harder to come by and a rumored better shaver than the normal Tech's. The Tech also has some tarnishing action goin' on, and the Fatboy is in awesome shape minus the wearing on the handle, Yay for me, and all credit goes to my awesomely cool wife for this stellar find.:thumbup1:

Congrats! I've often found that my wife has sharped eyes than I do in these situations. Enjoy the great razor.

I head different about the techs, I remember it was the oval that are more aggressive than the triangular slots. Either way awesome

I wish I could say the same for my SWMBO. While I found a great Aristocrat, when my wife started waving franticly for me to see something, it was to see some framed tin roof tiles worth an aweful lot. So now when I shave with my bargin find, my wifes rip-offs are screaming at me in the mirror ...
sweet find!
Very nice score :001_smile

Couple weekends back, the wife and I had to head home for her grandfathers 95th birthday. While there, the wife hit up a few antique stores and found multiple razors for me. Her grandmother also hooked me up with some straights which were passed down from my wifes great great grandfather. Also included was a toy shaving kit which my wifes father used as a child.
I know very little about everything I got, so anything you can tell me, especially regarding the straights, would be much appreciated...
Razors were (including prices paid):
Gillette Fatboy F2 - paid $4
Gillette Superspeed Black Handle (?) - $4
Neillite Four Hundred - $6
Red Injun No 101RP straight (handed down)
Wade & Butcher straight (handed down)
Rolls Razor (has codes D48 & 5 on it) - $28

Got a whole bunch of butchers in the mail today, all in fantastic scales and all in near shave ready condition. Oh yeah, and a box of junk. Took some pics of the junk, probably going to be selling half them off to restorers for $10 a pop. Oh yeah, and to all you Puma fans... I got a Puma in the junk box too. Yup...half the blade was gone!

Oh how I wish I had a digital camera....
Today was a GREAT day! I received:
1. My GOLD Merkur slant (it is beautiful )
2. My first batch of Feather blades
3. Musgo Real Shave Cream (my first tube)
4. Musgo Real Aftershave (my first bottle)
5. L'Occitane Cade Shaving Soap in the metal bowl (again, my first)
I can't decide whether I like the Musgo or the Cade more. (I wish my Cade AS had arrived today, too. :frown:)
Sorry I don't have pictures to post.

I got quite the "manly" haul, today:
1. Gold Merkur Slant
2. Feather Blades
3. Musgo Real SC
4. Musgo Real AS
5. L'Occitane Cade soap
(still waiting on the Cade AS)
Tomorrow's shave will be: gold slant w/feather, Musgo Real SC, Thayer's Witch Hazel, and Musgo Real AS.
As an aside, I can't decide which I like more. The Musgo and the Cade both smell AWESOME! If my Cade AS had arrived, I would be in a quandry over which to use first. As it is, it will be my first time with a feather, and my first time with Musgo. Quite an auspicious day ahead, tomorrow. I can hardly wait.
(Sorry I don't have a digital camera to post pictures of the haul.)

It's funny you mention the whiskers trembling in fear...I got a super close shave this morning with my slant and a Gillette 7 o'clock. So smooth, in fact, that I still don't have much stubble 16 hours later. I'm actually a little worried that I won't have enough stubble to even warrant a feather tomorrow!

Trumpers Coconut Shave Cream!
This first one I have had for a while, but I was trying to come to an agreement with the seller, but ended up eating it. The razor is broken unfortunately, doesn't close down properly, but I believe it is pretty rare, and am going to do some research to find out more. I love the Schick Platinums, which are fairly rare on their own, but this one looks like a very early version. It has a crude metal TTO, and a metal rod through the plastic below the TTO. In general it looks less finished than the normal version. I have never seen another like it. Sorry, didn't clean it.

I also finally got this one. I thought it got lost in the mail. I basically bought it for the case, but the razor is in amazing shape.

WOW!! It's got us excited, too. Great stuff there. Can't go wrong with a slant. Love my 39c sledgehammer. Watch out with a Feather in a Slant, though. I tried it and it tore my face up but a Personna in my slant works wonders in two passes.

The feather+slant combo turned out to be a non-event, so to speak. I guess I had already developed good skill with the slant. I got BBS in three passes, with only two microscopic weepers. A good result for the first time with a Feather, but actually no better than my shave the day before with a six-day-old yellow Gillette 7 o'clock. Weird.

Now I can finally take the plunge into wet shaving. Will finally get to see what all the buzz is about! Now I am waiting on my Tweezerman brush and Col Conk hardwood stand.
I should mention that the Merkur 34C is smaller than I thought it is almost tiny!
I can remember waiting on the last few items of my first kit to arrive. It seems like an unholy eternity, and the next thing you know you'll have a tremendous case of razor burn.

I remember those feelings. I had a cheapy middle eastern razor. I thought "How cute!". That was before I saw these forums and had any technique and on top of that, the razor and blades sucked and I had no lather. In less than twenty minutes, "How cute!" turned into "Oh shit, look at my bleeding neck!". Just be gentle. My first real DE shave with a Merkur HD and lather and the whole nine was fine. No nicks at all.
Thanks Jim!

I was given a Rolls Imperial #2 in the original box this morning. Stone and strop are in very good condition.
The blade is not very secure in the handle, otherwise it is in great shape. Any suggestions? I was thinking I might be able to bend the tab slighly to secure the blade better while shaving. Something about a sharp blade sliding around while I am shaving my neck is a little discomforting.

I honestly have no earthly idea. It is perfect though. The only thing is, my black-handled Gillette adjustable is longer and drags on the lower/outer ring. Simple enough,I put it in the taller/inner ring. The razor heads can sit end to end or like I have them in the picture. I really would like to know what it was for because it is like it was made for this. It is simple enough, I thought about making more.

Thank you all very much! I have heard that there were two versions, one with and one without the red. I don't know if that is true or not, but I don't plan on painting it. I think it looks good as is. They are great shavers, less aggressive than I expected.

Today I took delivery of a razor I have been trying to get for a year. Second one I won, but the other "got lost." Not as pretty as Scottys, but I am so happy with it. Thank you Dave for the heads up! I attached both the ebay image, and my image. :) Price tag: <$30 shipped. :D

Sweet! :thumbup1:
Hello all,
I just picked up a new Ming Shi razor from the Shaving Factory/Derby International through amazon.com. I ordered it on Monday and it arrived yesterday. The razor came in a plastic case with a five-pack of Derby blades, all for $10. With shipping, the total was still under $15.
I haven't shaved with the Ming Shi yet so I can't say anything about its performance -- good, bad or indifferent. I'm told this is a good razor for those who are new to DE shaving, and I fit that category.

I just found the most crazy find and acquisition while i was out today. It is a good friday indeed
Have you ever wondered what it would have looked like if you were to purchase a Gillette Super Speed from the store in the 1940's?

Wow, that is an astounding find! Seperately those NOS SuperSpeeds are worth some good coin. As a complete store display? Who knows? Wow.
I was also impressed by the look of the razor. I figured I couldn't go wrong for $10. It has a longish handle and is TTO -- two functions that are dear to my shaving heart.
Yes, I will let you know what I think of it. I'm also about to start using blades from the WSC sample pack (Dorcos, Crystals, Derbys and Israeli Personnas), so I'm facing a bit of a learning curve.

I rescued 3 german army open comb slants.
They are unissued and in unused near mint condition. The are made by Wehrmacht they come from a former German Army Camp supply depot 1939-1945 WWII. They are deep brown with gold flecks made from bakelite.
I have already shaved with one and let me tell you. These guys are insanely aggressive in a great way. Check out the wicked amount of blade exposure. They sound like a straight razor does, that buttering toast sound. Im BBS today thanks to my army slant my new favorite razor.

Wehrmacht is the German word for "Defense Forces" I think that is likely a stamp identifying these as military issue and not the manufacturer. Cool find though.

I had a pretty good day on my way up to Devon Avenue in search of more Godrej.
First, I stopped at Lincoln Square to visit Merz. Picked up a couple of Trumper's Violet Cream samples and a 2oz. bottle of Royall Lime. The latter, I can definitely see myself getting a larger bottle before Summer's out.

Next, I stopped at a small antique store that was open just on a whim. Glad I did.

Found:
1912 Gem Junior with the ornate handle, in a green bakelite box with new and used bakelite blade boxes--excellent condition
Valet Auto Strop in box--both in fair condition
2 bakelite handled Schick Injectors (e series?) one in box--both razors in very good to excellent condition
2 undated '40s Superspeeds in very good condition--just need to be cleaned and polished.
1 Slim Adjustable (I-1) in excellent condition.
Everything just needs a little cleaning and polishing. All for $27. His rule of thumb apparently was $5 for razors in boxes and $3 for loose razors.
Picked up some Greek soaps on Devon avenue for 99 cents apiece. The brown one is a pure Castile soap.

This week's score. All found at antique shops around Las Vegas.
Well I got everything from local antique shops, except for the B&B brush.
a fat boy that was a mess that cleaned up really well, for 21, another fat boy with a case that didn't clean up very well at all, an aristocrat for 20, a black slim line adjustable for 10. Cleaned up real nice! The B&B Brush, and two straights. the black one is an FW Berber, and the white one was a spike. they were 30 combined.

I have no idea what I am going to do with it. I just knew it was a crazy find!
WOW!, That has got to be one of the most incredible finds I have seen! Simply Amazing! Great Score!

two straights that I found at some antique shops this weekend - $30 (CDN$) for the pair. They both came in boxes that are in pretty rough shape. The Bengall came in an old W&B box and the McGill came in a red Thistle Brand box.

That Bengall is sweet!
I haven't shaved with the Ming Shi yet so I can't say anything about its performance -- good, bad or indifferent. I'm told this is a good razor for those who are new to DE shaving, and I fit that category.
Well I've had a few shaves with the Ming Shi -- enough to form an opinion. I started with Dorco blades and found it to be quite mild. The next step was a Derby blade, which gave a better shave -- although still on the mild side. I've also been shaving with a 40s Super Speed, which is a more agressive razor, especially with a Derby. (I do prefer the longer handle of the Ming Shi; I find I get a better grip than I do on the SS.) The Ming Shi gives a decent shave, but it won't blow you away.
I prefer to shave every other day, so I could see myself using the Ming Shi for those times when I need/want to shave on consecutive days and don't need/want an extremely close shave on the second day. It might also make a good travel razor -- if I leave it somewhere, or if my luggage gets lost, it wouldn't be a huge loss; also, the plastic case neatly holds the razor and a small box of blades -- very good for a travelin' man.
Overall, I find the Ming Shi to be a decent value. If you've got an extra $10 and an attack of RAD, you might just want to buy one.

Yes, we lost an ungovernable colony and gained a staunch ally - we really blew that one, didn't we!
chucking a few boxes of tea into the harbour constituted a war. To the English it was just a little temper tantrum that left us feeling a little miffed that good tea was wasted in such a fashion.
