You don't need to do much research to realize how vital a practice strop is when getting started. I didn't need much convincing that when I purchase a Tony Miller Artisan strop, I'm gonna get the practice.

I have a technical question concerning the practice strop. How wide is it? It seems to me that learning a redundant motion on the practice would translate better to the Artisan, as a student stropper, so I want the two strops to match in width for technique.

Those of you who own one, how wide is it? Also, is it the same length as the Artisan?

Mine is a little over 2 1/2 inches wide, and 19 inches long. It's almost the same length as my Artisan. Hope that helps

Mine's a bit narrower, at 2 3/8 x 19".

Thanks to both of you, yes!

That does help. Now I feel comfortable getting a 2 1/2 inch Artisan to match the practice strop. Much appreciated.

The width is not as important as simply learning to roll the razor at the end of each stroke..............the whole purpose of the practice strop. The narrower width forces the X pattern which is a good thing. The end stroke/slide to the side/flip the razor part is where the nicks occur. I think it is easier to strop on a wide strop, not doing an X than it is doing an X and the extra shifting to the side step may be a stumbling block in the beginning.
So, if you learn on a narrow strop, doing an X you should find a straight up and down easier.
